My joy today is discovering that the water heater in Attic New Dawn is weeping rust, and I'll have to land it's replacement, tomorrow. I'm praying my inside source with a major hardware outlet here will come through with a substantially sub-retail price.
Gonna have to rig a block & tackle to hoist it up through the attic hatch, and depending on dimensions, I'll also have to de-install the pull down stair to make large enough opening. An electric unit, so I won't need a plumber for gas (or any other) connections, and I'll just move the 220V wire & plug from the old unit to the lugs on the new. There WILL be cussing. There already HAS been cussing. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at February 25, 2021 10:41 PM (QzJWU) 159

Water heaters burst more often than they should and the flooding is what costs the money. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at February 25, 2021 10:49 PM (sy5kK) 182

The only basement in Texas is at The Alamo. Thought everyone knew that? (and you'd hit groundwater seepage about 4 to 5 ft. down, here.) This house has spray foam insulation, throughout. In the attic, it was sprayed onto the underside of the roof decking and rafters. Attic stayed well above freezing. But that's a 13 y/o heater now, and a cheap-ass builder's grade one, at that. I'm frankly happy that it lasted nearly 13 years. The rust pisses me off, as I changed the zinc anodes about four years ago, and the old ones weren't in terrible shape. One thing though. Post freeze, the city restored water pressure to it's glorious, Pre-2008 Hurricane Ike power. And something in the water heater couldn't take the new strain. Glenn Campbell and Roy Clark. The two greatest guitar entertainers of their times. Maybe a metal-shredder could rock it harder, or a classic guitarist might've played some more complex licks. But that'd be hard to imagine.
And Clark. Every bit as good on a banjo and fiddle as he was with the guitar. Campbell could sing the alphabet and out-do Clark's best vocals, but all in all Clark still could really convey the meaning and emotion when he sang, and he sang well. A worthy waste of an entire evening, watching either of 'em in Youtoobville. The Medieval Hall resembles a church. Dark, lots of stone, medieval Christian statuary. You used to see, on entering, a poignant wooden polychrome Madonna and Child. He sits in her lap and holds a book, pointing to a word and looking up at her. She has a faraway look on her face. She knows what's coming. Now first thing you see is a platform with sacred sculpture from other cultures. Camodian gods, the head of Constantine, an Aztec thing holding an axe. Ew. There's a whole room in the galleries about slavery too. CLEAN aluminum is actually a pretty fair conductor, and was considered very cost effective in it's day. Untold thousands of mobile homes and houses burned down as testimony to it's potential. Fact is though, clean and new aluminum works just fine. Just size it right for the anticipated loads, right? But, nope. 1950s & '60s electricians used the aluminum wire, but didn't upgrade the connectors on switches and plugs, which were all still copper based. And lazy 'elctricians often "shaved" the soft aluminum to "fit" the smaller connection spaces on the copper based switches n' outlets. Much electrolysis later, Aluminum Oxide proved a very capable resistance surface at every connection, and hoo-boy, did things ever get HOT after that! I haven't looked at the reported identity of the recipients of our high explosive affections today. If I did, I'd probably have to repair to the info sources to see who they are/were, and there'd be a decent chance they're new, or their name is new, or their allegiances have switched, or .... Of course there are Iranian-backed outfits who are mere extensions of the Damascus regime, and some that have their own (crazy or venal) agenda, and some whose coloration is, well, variable. Aluminum wiring is fine and dandy if done correctly with the correct terminations. It's used all the time for big wire, but pretty much a no-no for small branch circuits. As Jim mentioned, aluminum has some properties that make it unforgiving with poor termination. Aluminum oxides are strong insulators. And aluminum's melting and "get soft" point is much lower as well. Oxides form, junction resistance goes up, local heating goes up, aluminum gets soft, connection gets looser. Copper doesn't suffer from this. It's oxides aren't that bad, and it doesn't get soft until very high temperatures. Al's properties also make it a bitch to weld. The oxides are denser than the metal itself and thus will sink into the weld puddle. You're probably thinking of wiring. While aluminum pipe is used for many applications, it never was a house plumbing material. Copper, brass, steel, pvc and so forth are that. Now, joining aluminum to copper (in the presence of moisture) is a disaster electrically. Some jackwagon who didn't know what he was doing actually did that with a large feeder circuit at the local church we went to. Massive heating which was melting fuses in a disconnect. The copper wiring was carrying the heat a few feet back to the switch and melting the fuses. That prevented it from getting too out of hand before they caught it. Iran was actually fairly important in WWII, though only for resources and geography, not as a participant.
Second biggest Lend-Lease route to the USSR was through Iran. We had an assembly facility for trucks there, they would come in parts and sub-assemblies, be assembled, then driven north to the Caucasus and thence (before June '42 and after February '43) on to Soviet heartland. And oil from Abadan was big for the Brits. Iran was also where US flyers, interned in the USSR (they had been flying against Japan, the Soviets were still neutral) "escaped" from Soviet detention in the south Caucasus (narrator: the russkis connived in the whole thing). The reaction between copper and aluminum needs moisture to occur. You can join it together and it will hold if you can keep moisture away from it. They actually sell some connectors which do this. Basically a wire nut and some sealing compound. While they are sold, and used, they are not UL listed, and I don't think really legal per code anywhere. To properly splice aluminum to copper you need some alloy, compatible with both metals, which goes in between. If you look a power company service drop connections to copper SE conductors, you'll see they use a crimp-on (and these a big, high force crimpers) with two holes. Copper goes in on, aluminum in the other, and they never touch directly. A "separated split-bolt" is another one based on that principle. You have an alloy material which gets sandwiched in between the copper and al wires. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at February 26, 2021 12:41 AM (Mzdiz) 439

One of the problems with mixing copper and aluminum is that their differing heat properties cause them to flex and mechanically work loose from fittings. With the electric panel and aluminum service entry cable, there are large aluminum lugs that secure them in place. But in the wall, using something like wire nuts or screw terminals in recepticles that are not secure enough, the wires can flex loose and arc.

I've got a good collection of those MFSL CDs, and they still work as advertised. Less known than the archival properties though, is that the gold medium allowed MFSL (and ONLY them) a much finer laser etching pitch than with the aluminum CDs. The Ultra-Disk contains eight times the digital information of a standard CD, and is formatted in such a way that a regular CD player can decode the math in it's own, regular way. But yield 8x the signal out to the amplifier. Not eight times louder. Eight times more "tone" inside of every note of music, and in between the notes, too. It's why an UltraDisk sounds AS GOOD as an LP, without the associated "noise". Competing brand "gold" CDs lacked that 8x signal capacity. Accept no substitutes. Another thing MFSL did that few seem to remember. If a label agreed to an MFSL UltraDisk, said label also had to surrender the actual STUDIO MASTER RECORDING to MSFL, who digitally RESTORED and REMASTERED the original, to equal every aspect of the original, but with ABSOLUTELY clean sound and perfect fidelity. Two to try as proof. Elton John's "Yellow Brick Road", and Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon". Play them on the System of the Gods of your choice. You will never have, nor will after, hear a better, cleaner, more accurate or wide spectrum Hi-Fi version of these albums than these, on any medium, anywhere. I'm not kidding, and this extends across the entire MFSL library. It is what they DID that made them separate from the rest. They made LPs, too. I once owned the required decoder to go between turntable and receiver. Lost now, to the dusts of time and divorce. But mostly, divorce. Another benefit of ACSR -- skin effect. Even at 60Hz, in the large diameters, skin effect become significant, making the AC resistance significantly higher than DC. You are wasting the center core of the wire anyway, so replacing that with steel for strength makes little difference. The AC resistance of ACSR in the larger diameters is not much greater than that of pure stranded aluminum of the same diameter. I wouldn't call aluminum a poor conductor. It's a pretty good conductor. Not as good as copper or silver, but pretty good. A good heat conductor as well.
In fact, Aluminum is the 4th of the top conductors. Silver, copper, gold, and then aluminum in order of conductivity. * Society/life was so perfect and comfortable that they began to create problems just for the sake of having problems to deal with. It might take a couple of decades (probably not, though), but this will end poorly. Best case scenario is collapse of the dollar and outright dissolving of the union into nation states. Worst case, and what is more likely, is good think enforcement and purges via antifa and BLM as Obama's private well funded citizen army he mentioned a few years ago. I believe they've already started the push to have a single "truth" media and outlaw any questioning of what the government deems "truth". Our nation is not headed anywhere good. Look at what history tells you is next. Prepare your family for what is coming.
