Ace of Spades Pet Thread

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Sure it's the middle of Saturday afternoon, but kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

***

Saying good bye to a pet is saying good bye to a family member. Everybody says good bye and mourns in different fashions.

***

The following video was submitted by JR. I bet our Moron Hrothgar will relate to this.

Not quite the kiss she was looking for.

The road to hell trouble is paved with good intentions.

Hi there!

This is my gsd Krieger. He's on a tie-out in this picture because we're keeping him on low activity for a few weeks to try and heal a knee strain. He, of course, strenuously objects to not being with his people constantly. He's a pretty typical shepherd in that he's smart but nervous, and thinks cats cannot be trusted. -Funsize

Isn't attempting to keep active pets down a hoot? Hope the old wheels are recovering nicely. Knee issues are nothing to trivialize. Tell Krieger at least he's not wearing the Cone of Shame. Good to hear from you.

Mis Hum,

First thank you so much for your blogs I look forward to reading them every evening and especially the Pet Thread on Saturdays. I primarily lurk as redinabluestate. The horde is way too quick for me to keep up with.

This will be the second appearance on the world famous AOS Pet Thread by my best friend Luca. We got him in July 2019 and he will be two years old in March. I’m in sales and I am used to being on the road at least two weeks out of every month. Due to The Chinese Kung Flu I’ve been forced to be home working in my basement for almost a full year (come to think of it I should have run for President!). My company will not allow travel, even locally, or meetings with clients or other employees. It’s been very depressing. Luca has become my constant companion. As the picture shows he loves nothing more than to play. He is the happiest dog I have ever had and he couldn’t have come into my life at a better time. This picture shows his way of saying time for a break and have some fun! (Please note the tail which is a blur in the picture.) The other shepherd is Bella who believes that all this frivolity and silliness is beneath her. Dogs are proof that God is love. - redinabluestate

You're welcome for the Pet Thread. I'm happy to provide an outlet for pet lovers like you. It certainly appears that Luca is quite the cubicle mate. Good on you for having two wonder critters there. Thanks for sharing.

Lady

20210220_164812 (1).jpg

(Church)

The first is Lady, and she belongs to some old friends I knew before I left California. I love everything about her adorable little face, and it was a lot of fun to draw her wavy ears. She has a bunch of nicknames, including Pretty Lady, and I think that suits her well.

The second is Church. He belongs to a friend from work. I was able to finish the portrait at the end of a rough week for both of us, so it was a nice part of the weekend. You can tell he is super spoiled. He is a fluffy little flood.

I'd be happy to sketch for a fee. it's a labor of love. if you know anyone who wants a pet portrait feel free to send my email address along. - Sobek Pundit

Once again your work astounds me. You are quite talented and I can just sense those pets here in real life. Thank you for your work.

We have foxes in our neighborhood that like to dig a home under our porch. Here is a picture from a couple of years ago. The vixen has a bum leg, but several of my neighbors have seen her roaming around, even recently. Enjoy! - Isophorone Blog

I've seen a number of foxes in the wild. But, I've never seen a mamma with kits. Awesome photo. Thanks for contributing a good wildlife photo from the Swamp area.

Hiya,
This is SNAB, a/k/a Whipsaw. The photos are of my pet memorials. My beloved Jimmy is the dude in the black and white photo. He is also the middle stone in the ring in the next photo. It's a yellow diamond made from his ashes. He died a year to the day after my father died. I miss him terribly. He was a scruffy stray in Madison, Wisconsin. I found him eating birdseed. I said, Hey kitty, would you like some food? He jumped into my arms and we were together for next sixteen years. Another photo shows memorial stones I have in my roof garden and a large circular mosaic of Stan the Man Unusual, Maynard Maynardahanrahanahan O'Toole, Leftenant Sunshine, the Blonde Panther of Love, our Beloved Dingdong Daddio. He was the runt in his litter who grew into an enormous beautiful cat. He wasn't very bright and I attributed it to his mother having busied herself with the other kittens and inadvertently sitting on his head and depriving his brain of oxygen. Nevertheless, he persisted.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful tributes to your cats. It really sounds like they were full of personality. Plus they had great nicknames!! Poor kitteh scrounging in Madison, Yuck. Anyway he made it to a great home. We appreciate your contribution today. Thanks.

10 Sobek should gather all his pet portraits into a portfolio or album and seriously think about retail sales.

Also offer to do unique pet portraits commercially.

Sometimes folks don't want to take a beloved hobby commercial cause it changes it's meaning. I know this too well. So I can understand if they wouldn't want to do that.

If they aren't they seriously should get all these pet portraits together.

11 Bogie continues to delight us and is happy and a bit mischievous. That's ok. He's still a puppeh and some redirection is needed. We installed two new terrier barriers that can't be climbed, and he's adjusted to that. I've boxed up a lot of delicious looking craft supplies and my family room looks super neat. All's right in the merrier terrier world.

18 I am currently dogsitting two HUGE Great Danes. Moose is 185 lbs of love, mischief, and drool. His older sister is a bit smaller and sleeps all day, which is nice when Moose is such a handful. He's 16 months old and has a ridiculous set of clangers on him that are *finally* coming off next month.

His cone of shame will be about the same size as the satellite dish sitting atop the Millennium Falcon...

A few years ago I noticed a squirrel with symptoms like rabies -- standing and keeling over a lot, more erratic than usual. Animal Control said that squirrels are usually too far down the chain to actually get rabies.
Looking at lists of symptoms, I guessed maybe the thing had distemper.

Either way, I didn't want a cat or other animal to get ahold of a sick squirrel.

Posted by: Dr. Varno at February 27, 2021 03:21 PM (vuisn)

27 Walter is definitely a Frenchie. In Meltdown #5 it sounds like he is saying, "Hurry up!"

Those dogs are so sweet. Just had to put our rescue Frenchie down in December because of various serious health issues. But she was such a blessing. She was my "nap buddy" through two serious chemotherapy treatments. She never failed to entertain us.

28 Clarification: after losing a dog to cardiac and respiratory problems,bi couldn't choose a high risk doggo. So wire haired Russell seemed perfect, especially one with clean genetic testing

29 Difficult pet week for me. My kitteh was breathing heavily, took her to the pet emergency hospital and she has heart congestion and they took 176 mls of fluid from around her lungs. She also has anemia and low potassium levels. The hospital visit stressed her, she's home but not very well. Not much energy. She also has irritable bowel syndrome which she been treated for the last few years with steroids. In December the animal oncologist prescribed a stronger steroid and it seems her breathing problems started after that.

She's got a lot of issues, seems fixing one creates another problem. I have a hydration kit that would up her potassium but would be problematic with the fluid buildup around her heart and lungs. Her bone marrow isn't creating red blood cells which is either caused by an unseen cancer or heart congestive failure. She has been gaining weight the last few months so I think the latter more likely. Diuretic was prescribed to try to reduce the fluid around her heart and potassium to try to get those levels up. She's been resting a lot in an enclosed kitty bed, thankfully still uses the litter box and eats a little bit, not much.

Conor is #4 in the Hrothgar Frenchie line. #1, Miss Sofie had quite labored breathing but lived to 14. The other two (#2 & #3) had very mild issues but that didn't stop them from being fun dogs with a sense of humor and the joy of life.

62 Foxes are nearly as bad as coons in some ways (trash-ripping, rabies) and way worse in others (wanton murder of kitty cats).

I consider them solidly in the "vermin" category, with coons and coyotes. A lot of people give them a cuteness pass, IMHO.

84 Well, I'll say I care more about the dogs than the dirty Leftist cur of an owner, in this case. But also, it might help to capture the stone-cold killer(s) who dognapped them in the first place... The kind of scum who'd gun down a stranger for a paycheck needs to be caught. Especially because I doubt that dog-walker would've bodily resisted the armed robber... That smells like a psycho-killer, to me. Unless maybe the dog walker rekinized him.

I can't stand Lady Gaga and only care about the pups.
There are a lot of people stealing dogs right now and selling them since the market is hot.
People are stealing them while you're walking them and out of backyards.
This has happened in the Houston area and other parts of the country.

92 I was in ear shot of radio news more than normal the last couple of days, heard the GaGa dog kidnapping story over and over again.
What I find out of normal, maybe borderline disturbing, is that the dog walker that was shot was rarely mentioned, if at all. It took listening most of the afternoon (the radio was on and I didn't control it, others did) to find out if the guy lived, how many shots he took, etc.
The 500k reward was mentioned most every time, however. And every time, we heard that GaGa was in Europe, working.
But the dog walker's condition? nope.

I thought someone had targeted those dogs for ransom but if they got nervous with the publicity and just left them tied somewhere that is probably not so.

100 Jake just keeps getting weirder. He never barked at people out front, just people with dogs. Gary, the one I put down, barked at both. Now Jake has decided to bark at people he sees outside. And he howls at the end. He's taken to adding howls in all sorts of situations. I guess it's a trade for getting him to bark less.

Last year Covid caused so many people to adopt dogs that the shelters became bare which caused people to have to seek out purebred dogs.
The breeders are able to charge a lot of money because of the demand. There are so many breeders charging a lot of money without letting you knowing anything about the parents.
They don't need to. As soon as the pups are born they are adopted.
Thieves know there is a high demand right now, which is why it's important to have a lock on your gate.

Growing up, we kept all feed for horses and cattle (and youngest brother's goats) in shiny metal garbage cans with a snug lid. Never once had rats in the grain. Don't bother with plastic cans, the rats will eat through those in no time.
Get the smaller can, cuz if you use a full sized one and have to move it for some reason, it's too heavy.

This explains why there are now 5 kittehs visiting my backyard when I saw none for a few years before the Imprisoning.

Now, add in the suspension of local TNR programs, which means feral cats have not been neutered/spayed in a year and in a few months there are going to be kittens everywhere. I'm going to make a collage of my kitteh visitors and add new ones as they appear.

Then one day, you guys are having a couple beers and he's all "listen, man... Have you thought about your relationship with Lord Satan? What are your thoughts on ritual murders? Is that something you'd consider? Also, grab me another sausage while you're up, brotha."

180 Pretty Lady is obviously another *awesome* Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a breed of dog that won my heart over. Great drawing!

I so need another one, of course now that I'm finally ready I'm probably a year away from being able to get one. I'm on a few waiting lists. The lockdown has made dogs a high demand item. I just hope all these puppies and kittens being snapped up aren't like bunnies and chicks at Easter time, forgotten come summer time when they're older and less cute.

181 Cesar Milan has an interesting observation:
Dogs are born with active noses, hence can differentiate smells immediately;
Puppy's eyes open at about two weeks and only then to they begin to differentiate shapes;
Puppy ears start to function at about four weeks.
Hence the canine observational/response hierarchy is thus Nose, Eyes, Ears!

His similar analysis for humans yields the Eyes, Ears, Nose Hierarchy!

He suffered from renal failure and we had him put down in 2016. In 2017 our current crop of cats... 4 of them, a momma cat and her 3 welfare kids showed up.

They're still here. Wouldn't trade them for anything. A source of amusement and they actually keep the rodent population down under a 1000 here at the compound.

221 Sadness. Corn Pop disappeared just hours before we were about to
move up the road to our new house, at the end of November. How he would
have loved it here!
And princess Harli had to
be put down just before Christmas. Her grave is above the stream just
into the woods behind the house. I miss my girl, remembering how Tim
and I were present when she was born.

I feel morose. It will pass.

222 Now
we have Jake the Uncouth. He eats like Jethro Bodine and had not a
shred of feline delicacy. He tracks Georgia clay into the place,
leaving deposits wherever he goes. He's a 15 pound terror of the
rodential community out here (which is extensive). He uses the cat door
to bring his prey into the house. We have a designated microwave cover
for catching them so they can be tossed out back.

He
showed up at Publius' parents' last April and elbowed his way into the
house and their affections. He sashayed past the food bowl, giving it a
sniff for future reference, then went straight to the litter box on the
storage porch as though he'd been using it for years. No regard for
the two current cats there.
Now that we live down here by the woods, we're his nightclub and the parents are daycare.

224 I don't think foxes live where I live now, but when I lived in NYS I used to see them all the time while hiking in wild areas.

One morning a buddy and I were out hiking (Hunter Creek Park in Erie County, an "undeveloped park" which is really just a wilderness area) and stopped near a large, flat rock in a small clearing to shrug off our packs for a few minutes and grab a hit off our water bottles, when we heard some rustling in the leaves behind us. Being in black bear country we had a rifle with us, but to our surprise it was a little red fox which proceeded to run around in circles barking away.

She hopped up on that flat rock and looked to us as if for approval, then back to running in circles, stopping now and then to look at us for more clapping and cheering.

We rewarded her for her little performance by thanking her and tossing some jerky which was gratefully accepted, and went on our way. The red fox must have had a burrow back behind that little clearing and probably suns on that rock in the morning. We stumbled upon her morning routine and she was quite glad to have some company!

We have a yellow lab that will be 11 soon, she's slowing down. But sometimes, late afternoon when I used to come home, Bailey gets playful, she play fights w/ Kahlua, the 6 yo chocolate lab, she still has that spark. Tho I suspect she is a bit deaf.
