Saturday Overnight Open Thread (2/27/21)

The Saturday Night Joke

1. The sport of choice for the urban poor is BASKETBALL.

2. The sport of choice for maintenance level employees is BOWLING.

3. The sport of choice for front-line workers is FOOTBALL.

4. The sport of choice for supervisors is BASEBALL.

5. The sport of choice for middle management is TENNIS.

And...

6. The sport of choice for corporate executives and officers is GOLF

THE amazing fact is, the higher you go in the corporate structure, the smaller your balls become.

There must be a shit load of people in Washington D.C. playing marbles.

Couples Reveal How Love and Sex Has Changed During the Decades They've Spent Together

VICE: You’ve been married for 76 years. What was flirting like when you met?
Lambert: I fell in love with her immediately, I couldn’t control it. I was close friends with her brothers, so we’d see each other often. When I went to their house I would sit in one corner [of the room] and she in the other. That’s how we courted each other. And one day, I made the first move.
Clémence: When we got married we didn’t have a party or anything. It was during the war and there was a 6PM curfew. We wouldn’t have been able to do much anyway.

How has your love evolved over the years?
Lambert: When we were younger I would come home every evening from work at midnight and leave again at 7AM. We had five children to feed. Time in bed was just about all we shared.
Clémence: We didn't see each other that often. But now we’re older, we can enjoy our time together more. It’s allowed us to rediscover ourselves. When we got married, we never imagined we would stay together for so many years. In fact, 76 years is very short. People congratulate us on it, but it’s natural for us. Since we got married, we have never been apart, so we can't imagine ever separating.

A company town mixed with Big Brother and you get: Woven City.

Toyota Motor Corporation started construction this week on a 175-acre smart city at the base of Japan's Mount Fuji, about 62 miles from Tokyo, the company announced Tuesday.

The city, which Toyota has dubbed the "Woven City," is expected to function as a testing ground for technologies like robotics, smart homes, and artificial intelligence. A starting population of about 360 inventors, senior citizens, and families with young children will test and develop these technologies.

These residents, who are expected to move into the Woven City within five years, will live in smart homes with in-home robotics systems to assist with daily living and sensor-based artificial intelligence to monitor health and take care of other basic needs, according to the company.

So when you see "Organic" on the label, is it really safe? In this instance. No.

Annie’s Homegrown, largely known for its "organic" macaroni and cheese line, is taking steps to remove a potentially harmful class of chemicals, called ortho-phthalates, from its products and packaging materials.

These chemicals make plastic flexible, and phthalates have already been banned in many kids' toys over health concerns. Some scientists say the chemicals harm fertility, health of babies, disrupt hormones key for development and damage genetic material in sperm. One 2016 study in particular tied exposure to the chemicals to "diminished sperm count and deteriorated sperm quality, which may lead to infertility."

It turns out that cockfighting is a dangerous activity, for the human.

A rooster fitted with a knife for a cockfight turned on his owner and killed him while trying to escape, reports the Express News Service in Hyderabad.

Police said the animal was being readied to take part in a fight when it tried to escape. Its owner attempted to catch it but was struck by the 7cm-long (three inch) knife on the animal's leg during the struggle. I enjoy reading. I have never thought of it this way: How Reading Is Like Love: Italo Calvino on the Ecstasy of Surrendering to Other Dimensions of Experience

“Lovers’ reading of each other’s bodies… differs from the reading of written pages in that it is not linear… What makes lovemaking and reading resemble each other most is that within both of them times and spaces open, different from measurable time and space.”

FEBRUARY 22--In what may be the worst explanation for driving 50 mph over the posted limit, a 21-year-old motorist told cops that he was speeding on a Florida highway because he was “listening to a song named Ciento Veinte, which means 120, so I was driving 120.”

Cops allege that Richard Lee Ortecho, 21, was spotted weaving in and out of traffic Saturday evening on Interstate 95 near Vero Beach. Ortecho, driving a Volkswagen, was clocked at “speeds ranging between 120 mph and 127 mph” in a 70 mph zone.

Ortecho barely missed striking other vehicles, according to an arrest affidavit, and did not immediately stop when a cop car with its lights flashing gave chase.

When Ortecho finally pulled over, he said, “I’m sorry, I didn’t know driving reckless was illegal,” cops report. Asked why he was driving in excess of 120 mph, Ortecho offered an odd answer.

Ortecho said he was driving while listening to the song “A Ciento Veinte,” a cut on an EP released last year by the rapper Track Insano. Ortecho noted that, “ciento veinte means 120, so I was driving 120.”

29 So.. funny story. Our old dog, Joe who's a Rotti mix loves to try and get into the little office at Shep's because he knows that's where all the kibble and treats are. We have been told please make sure door is securely closed when you leave. Well.. someone didn't securely latch the door and old Joe decided to wander in and see what's up. He then proceded to shut himself in somehow and couldn't get out. He went nuts and hurt himself pretty badly. He broke the window with his head and then tried to chew his way out. Part 2 follows..

She, being from the south, didn't believe the stories I'd told her about how the state was a big pack of drunks. So there was this sign on the boat, "No Alcohol!!!" and I told her "watch this." So there was a big trash can on the boat, and by the end of the trip it was filled to overflowing with beer cans and bottles that EVEYRONE had smuggle in under their clothes. After that, she believed me.

If Terminator Dark were merely a bad film that would be one thing, what puts it over the top is it's aggressively bad.

Less than 5 minutes into the film and it negates and makes completely pointless, every Terminator film that came before it.

It' gets progressively wore from there.

It's not horrifically bad sadly as that might give it some value as a bad movie watch. It isn't even Tom Cruise's The Mummy bad, but it has most of modern movie problems of trying to substitute action for story, the John Connor's replacement has no screen presence and Arnold and Hamilton distract from the piece completely rather than complement it. That said I tuned out during the big action scene around 3/4 of the way through the film and barely remember the end.

Terminator is a franchise with one story that the second film managed to do very well and thus succeed, but the premise is a dry well and they just can't leave it alone, though after 2 poorly grossing films in a row perhaps now they finally will. Or we will get Robocop vs Terminator, which at least would something new for the premise to do.

It took the docs the better part of the month to FINALLY determine that the mass was NOT cancer, but something that they can treat. I think related to TB, which strikes me as odd, but whatever.

So, prayers in this case worked well. He is out of the hospital and not in danger of dying of cancer at 53, as his Dad and Granddad did before him.

361 Thinking of "Texas Music" if that is even a thing because the genres are so different, I would look at it this another way. How many states have had more of an impact on music or more of distinctive style? Sure there are lots of arguments and opinions, but anyone being serious could only offer a very few and that pretty much makes the point.

Country alone, Texas can't be lower than the top three or four and that is by people who don't like the Texas style. Texas music really? How 'bout Willie, Waylon, Bob Wills, Townes Van Zandt and so many it is pretty much impossible to list. Jerry Jeff Walker was born in NY but he was a TX legend. The more I think about it, even listing the legends woulds be pointless, take forever, and overkill at the same time. This isn't an argument that needs to actually be made.

We should debate Delaware music or Oregon music.

Actors don't have to have the qualities of the characters they play, but for them to be not as smart is the most glaring. That said, sometimes the camera does not always capture qualities that are apparent in a person who sits in the room.

The two swordsmen in Conan the Barbarian were towering huge, but because their proportions are normal, the camera doesn't capture it.

You
have good genes and have been lucky. I know people who have lead much
less interesting lives than I that ended up with broken bones and other
maladies on the reg. Some people are just not aware enough and others
just have had bad luck. Most have to deal with the genes they have and
do the best they can.
But the idea one should
be proud of not taking prescription meds is one I can't countenance. I
think of the many that don't deal with their maladies, those are the
ones who have nothing to be proud of. The guy that takes his pills, gets
the tests, shows up for dialysis or whatever treatment, that is the guy
that should be proud.

434 Well, I made progress with the Suburban today. Got the steering wheel almost centered, but ran out of adjustment on the right side tie rod. It is shortened up as far as it will go. I have booked it in for a check at an alignment shop on Monday. Doesn't hurt to have another set of eyes on it.

And I got the dead power window motor in the driver's door working. Some Gomer had been in there before me, and replaced the motor, and fastened it in with with rivets, like the factory does. Almost had to have been a dealership; most normal mechanics would use nuts and bolts, to make it easier to service next time. Anyway they used a dome head rivet under the sweep of the sector gear, which cause so much drag that the thermal breaker in the little motor gave out. So I replaced the breaker with a wire shunt, and the motor ran fine. And I put it together with nuts and bolts.

Window goes up and down as it should, now.

441 In a wholesale change of topics ONT killer comment, oh, what the hell. Past couple years, I've wasted wasteable time now now n' then in the U toob, watching various "reaction" videos, ranging from rappers watching listening to their first metal, to damn near anyone listening to their first Pavarotti.

I think, without even a NEAR competitor, the most heavily reacted to track(s), are the same song, but those being the 1. Official Video Release, and 2. Live Guest on Conan version, from Disturbed, playing the Simon & Garfunkel classic: The Sound of Silence. I didn't say it's my favorite track. But I think the internet has, and I can't find comparables that are even close.

It's a GREAT set of tracks, but what is it about it that's drawn such a huge reaction? Not only in it's original airplay days a few years back, but the reaction tracks seem to NEVER END. Struck a nerve out there, it did.

That's right. They used to make the thermal breaker with a bimetal strip. Overload the motor for too long, and the contacts would open, but eventually reclose. This one was a strange beast, like two pieces of copper with graphite sandwiched between them. And it was definitely open, because the motor ran once it was replaced by a piece of wire. So I stand to get X more years of life from a motor that would otherwise have been replaced.

It's not a song I like well enough to want to hear a different take on it, nor is it one that I hate so much that totally different take might be acceptable. 476 Well, it's an odd choice to put Brown and Pavarotti on the same lighted stage. But the song selection saves it... It works really well. It's a vocal piece where the instrumentals take a backseat (but are also super important for making the piece work). I never thought of that song in the opera context, but it makes sense that way.

Brown stepped up and delivered a far superior vocal accuracy, note and pitch, vs. his usual "concert" giveadamn. Near perfect, throughout. He gave Pavarotti the due respect, there. In exchange, Pavarotti delivered a CLINIC as to singing in an entirely unknown medium, and making it Genius.

They both had the talent, but Brown seldom had to prove it thus, and Pavarotti HAD to prove it thus, on each and every performance, or fall from his lofty perch as The Best.

484 Pavarotti probably did more to bring Opera music to the masses than anyone else. His Three Tenors concerts with Domingo and Carerras were huge hits, seen by countless millions. It is interesting that the three major ones were done as part of the Soccer World Cup as all three are huge soccer fans.

The Pavarotti and Friends collaborations were nice to see, with some good duets. Sure, at times I thought Luciano was trolling pop singers because most of the time the talent difference was obvious. Not the case with Brown and others, but it was with many. Either way, most of if was done for charity I believe.

I don't want to veer off into politics on this, but I actually look for black dudes reviewing rock and metal, and there are some really good reviewers. What I'm getting at is if we truly are such a systemically racist country, they wouldn't even have internet access, let alone have successful youtube channels.

My sock drawer needs sorting. Lotta work.

The Druids says they will help, but not until the 19th day before the solstice thingy. They have some kinda rules and ceremonies and sacrifices and whatnot.

Somehow I don't trust those Druids.

Old Mama's Apple tablet charger is not working either. Not sure which modular component is wrong, and it is almost impossible to test independently. Probably by design.

uti's can cause hallucinations among other things. They are scary as hell if you are are care taker. I never had one but I have seen it. Not sure if they can't be fixed at some point. I do know at some point, at some end, most things can't be fixed.

523 I try to be nice. I have no interest in drama and certainly no in interest in going back and forth with people who want to cause disruption. A certain troll has been handed so many olive branches he could start an orchard I guess. If this were a lefty site, he would have been banhammered from day one. If I had the ban hammer, he would be gone. Doesn't make me right, it is just perspective.

But the implication that was mentioned above that someone can eschew medication or serious maladies by eating well, exercising, etc, is so absurd I probably should not even respond. I can say I have known many who never drank or smoked, that ended up taking so many pills it is amazing.

The skeptics should ask Jim Fixx how exercise worked out. Some times you are dealt the hand you are dealt. Also I know some heavy smokers that will likely live into their 90s.

526 Pavarotti probably did more to bring Opera music to the masses than anyone else. His Three Tenors concerts with Domingo and Carerras were huge hits, seen by countless millions.

Give credit to Beverly Sills and Joan Sutherland, too. People don't remember, but back in the 70s there was a real effort to make opera accessible to the general public. Those top singers often appeared on mainstream talk shows like Merv Griffin and Mike Douglas, where they'd sing an aria as well as chat with the host. It probably wasn't all that successful, but it showed some forward-thinking by the artists and theater managers of the time, and in the end the public WAS exposed to high art to some extent.

Just as opera and classical music was included in the old Bugs Bunny cartoons, this was the last time the general public could boast of a grounding in the basics of their own high culture. After that, everything fragmented, and opera became basically a dead art form with appeal to a very narrow segment of society.

527 Drinking more is the best preventative for chronic UTI. Drinking cranberry juice is better. Better than that is Cranberry Juice Plus from Ocean Spray, which is fortified with extra good stuff to fight UTI.

The pain and sepsis can cause cognitive distress. Sometimes finding the right antibiotic is hard, sometimes the patient can become desensitized.

In general old people hate drinking and peeing and will argue about each glass.

no weight specialist here, and I don't know her age or any other details, but that seems low to me. . But when in doubt, get a second opinion, completely apart from the regular docs. I do know UTI's can cause all kinds of trouble. But I was dealing with catheters and such, UTI breading grounds. All kidding aside, cranberry juice on a daily basis can't hurt.

it is pretty well known. It is best to add in some pure cranberry juice with nothing added. At first it is pretty bitter for a newbie. Some people mix it with the Ocean Spray cranberry juice cocktail, and some use orange juice. But the key is to get some legit cranberry in there. There are also pills but I can't vouch for them.. I like the taste of the no sugar cranberry juice, but many find it off putting.

context there. That weight scared me a bit. My mom didn't make it well into her 70s and was much taller. Every situation is different. She should have docs that are on this stuff. It can be super confusing though, sometimes they end up seeing so many specialists, the general game is lost. You have to have a very good GP who sees it all, not just a specialist working on one part and not concerned with the rest.

prayers up to you MIii and your mother and family. I have been there. Dealt with palliative care and hospice care and not even for the same people. It sucks but it is the road we follow I suppose, particularly when we get old. No matter how old our parents get sick, it is always too soon.

540 I missed the ONT completely.

I have kidney stone problems, so every now and then I will drink some cranberry juice and it seems to keep things moving. When I first started drinking it on someone's recommendation I picked up the 'Just Cranberry.' There is a huge difference between this and the 'normal' cranberry juice, and not just in taste.

Yes, it does seem to clean out the 'A' pathway, but no one tells you what it does to the 'B' path.

We live in this age when modern medicine can help with almost everything. But at some point we get to the end. Learning when to let it go and let life end naturally is not easy. It goes against everything we know not to keep the tests and procedures coming. I'm grateful mom has an understanding GP, and she made these decisions early on.
