Beginner Problem - Black To Play (1316) Goal: Black can force mate in 3 moves Hint: Get the rook to the back rank 8/6pk/p5p1/8/1pB1n3/1P2bbP1/P4r1P/5RK1 b - - 0 1 Intermediate Problem - White To Play (1311) This is one of those rare occasions that you can force checkmate with only one knight (with the help of your king, of course) Goal: White can force mate in 3 moves Hint: Allow Black to advance his pawn and trap his king 8/8/8/4N3/8/7p/5K1k/8 w - - 0 1 Advanced Problem - White To Play (1285) Usually, if I can't solve a problem, I'll cheat and give it to my app to solve, since I'm usually running out of time before I need to publish the chess thread. But I wanted to solve this one myself so I kept at it over a period of days and finally figured it out. I thought it was quite a tough nut to crack, but maybe some of you will have an easier go of it. But I did feed to to my app to test my solution, and it seems to hold up. The app usually finds lines that I miss, and sometimes it's enough to demonstrate that my proposed win is flawed, but not this time. I was able to handle all of the unanticipated moves it threw at me -- my solution withstood all of the shocks. The decision tree did get a bit complicated, though. So the goal is to obtain an overwhelmingly winning position for White. 8/2r2pRP/8/2p5/7r/8/k1K4p/6R1 w - - 0 1

It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app. ___________ So that about wraps it up for this week. Apparently a lot of home pantries our empty too - or cabin fever and desire for something that is cooked; last night drive through windows had no fewer than fifteen in queue. The two Sonics nearby had every bay filled, but only a couple employees at each location. A Whataburger had a line of at least thirty cars, Schlotskies about half that. Lol, OM. She is a very high quality mannequin though. I'd guess it's a sweater designer's model since it's outside. I was very confused when I was younger and read an old novel where the heroine was a mannequin as a job. Much like the old sci-fi where the "computer" got up and walked across the room. I grew up in Texas. Moved away in 2010. Had not heard of ERCOT before this.
That is how it works, you only hear about the Energy Reliability Council of Texas when there is announced rolling blackouts every other summer. That is not supposed to be confused with Texas Energy Reliability Council (TERC) which is made up of flunkies from the Railroad Commission of Texas, Natgas industry, ERCOT and the Public Utility Commission. You see, its important to have Matroyshka councils; that is, councils within councils to mismanage the electric power grid so that no one is held responsible when dysfunctional organizations do what they are designed to do - promote special interests at the costs of human life. Our main methodologies have not changed since the last Normals cycle, Palecki said. But minor improvements have been made in how we round numbers, calculate percentiles, count the numbers of days exceeding thresholds, and format output. No movie thread this week, however-
We saw the newish movie "Synchronic" by the same Benson and Moorhead, the two guys who made the excellent low-budget/high concept horror movies "The Endless" "Spring", and "Resolution". If you've never seen these movies, they're well worth checking out. "Synchronic" concerns two EMTs who come across people dying with the use a new drug, Synchronic. The drug allows you to experience time differently and nonsequentially. One of the EMTs has cancer and starts to use the drug as an out. I'm sad to say that while "Synchronic" looks great. It's a pretty mediocre offering by Benson and Moorhead. They forego horror for an emotional drama within a SF context. Unfortunately, they miss the emotional high that they so obviously want the viewer to feel. It's an okay watch. But, if you want to see what Benson and Moorhead are really capable of, check out "The Endless", "Spring", or "Resolution". Posted by: naturalfake at February 20, 2021 06:10 PM (dWwl8) 130

lol They can't. I track forecasting for our area semi-regularly. The updates they do X times each 24 hour cycle will sometimes flux by 10 degrees, go from clear to rain or some other bullshit. Yet they "know" how much warmer we'll be in 2064. During this past "severe winter weather event" the Weather Channel never stopped with the hype. Generally speaking, the trend in clothes has been to greater comfort and convenience, perhaps too much comfort now, in the Age of Slob, but it's occurred to me that there was movement in the opposite direction once. Ladies' gowns during the Regency era were light and sheer - indeed some of the more daring ladies used to dampen their bodices to make them even more revealing (1825's version of the Wet T-shirt contest, although in England, I'm sure many bodices got unintentionally wet as well), and then 25 years later those once-brazen hussies were bundling up in petticoats and hoop skirts. I just read the average Victorian woman wore close to 40 pounds of clothing (we wear less than 2 lbs, depending on the weather of course) To go from relatively light clothing to mountains of crinoline and whalebone corsets - ugh.

I was reading an analysis of what happened to the Texas grid. First, and this is important, Texas basically has its own grid which is not too well tied into the rest of the CONUSA grid. It's a problem to get outside power in because of this. They can do it, but not too well. The main culprit was wind turbine failure. That was the trigger. The system is balanced between this fraction from nuclear, this from coal, this from wind, this from natural gas. Sequence went like this. Demand for power spiked due to the cold, causing generation to need to increase. Wind failed due to cold freezing turbines, and they had to switch to natural gas to make up for the lost wind. That put a heavy increase in the just-in-time pipeline supply of natural gas, and that started failing (again due to the cold), which led to the crisis. Nuclear and coal underperfomed, again due to the cold and failure to winterize enough, but not by much. Solar didn't do too bad, but it's a joke anyway, very intermittent, and a tiny fraction of required supply. Ever seen it in person? I have always lived within a few hours of The Air Force Museum. Absolutely staggering.
Although the B-36 is pretty sexy too. I have said before and will say again: I miss the old mailed fist clutching lighting bolts insignia. Posted by: Aetius451AD I knew the man who used to be Base Commander at Wright-Pat many years ago, and his Air Force career dated back to WWII (General Glen McClernon, now deceased). He had a lot of great stories, but said it was like standing in a hurricane on the flightline with the B-36. The F-105 is a BIG airplane. The F-105 was the first plane to be configured as a Wild Weasel during the Viet Nam Wa; basically used to jam radar and ferret out and kill SAM radar sites on the ground. Had a lot of ECM pods, and deployed with the first Anti-radiation (radar) missile, which I think was the Shrike. It wasn't very maneuverable, but with the area-ruled fuselage, could fly pretty fast at low altitude. Posted by: Bozo Conservative....outlaw in America at February 20, 2021 06:42 PM (tjZg/) 219

Feminists should be very happy with chess. The king is like the old king Macbeth knocks off, he can hardly move and just kind of limps along, one square at a time, and everyone has to protect his senile old ass. Drink Like Vikings, well said. The quasi-medieval regression to scientific illiteracy, matched with the disastrous lysenkoization of science in key areas, is simply stunning.
On top of the economic illiteracy that doesn't comprehend cost efficiency, opportunity cost, and self-impoverishment, a catastrophic combo. When I whined (and boy did I whine) when Trump rightly exited the "Paris Accord" only on non-substantive, non-technical grounds (it wasn't a "good deal" for us), my despair was entirely driven by the awareness that the window to defang the rent-seeking vandalous authoritarians ("green" nonsense) might be brief. I didn't imagine that it would have ended already, on the presidential level. Posted by: rhomboid at February 20, 2021 07:20 PM (OTzUX) 364

Pretty sure he didn't think that one through. Posted by: Jewells45 at February 20, 2021 07:23 PM A number of years ago, during lunch, I was in a LGS that was also frequented by local law enforcement. This particular day, with at least 17 cops, both uniformed and plain clothes, *with* at least 3 marked cruisers right outside the door, two ne'er-do-wells came in, pushed up to the counter, produced two handguns, and announced this was a robbery. Apparently having at least 20 handguns pointed them (including the owners and staff) dissuaded them from proceeding, and they were swiftly disarmed and taken into custody. Their mamas certainly didn't raise any Einsteins. Posted by: Duncanthrax at February 20, 2021 07:31 PM (DMUuz) 401

I do believe that the P-51D Mustang was the most beautiful and visually balanced fighter of the prop era. F-86 takes the win in the subsonic jet era, and my money is on the F-16D up to the present.
But, for sheer hulking, malevolent menace, be it in the air or just brooding on the ramp, nothing says "Fuck You, Pay Me" quite like the F-4J Phantom. "It looks at you like you owe it money", to borrow Kim DuToit's description of the deadly Cape Buffalo. A beautiful airplane? In some aspects, but it's a "beauty" like Mike Tyson in his prime.
