Same here. The only primers I can find at a decent price were a box of five hundred 50BMG primers and I'm still waiting on them to arrive. I can find primers but they are 4 times Plus the normal price so I'm waiting it out. No powder (except pyrodex) to be had anywhere. On a positive note, My 1884 trapdoor rifle arrived today.

I hiked a portion of the Appalachian trail twice. Both 30 day trips. Resupplied at 14 day intervals. I carried more than two weeks worth of food ON MY BACK.

How many people in any state have even five days of food in the house, let alone any stored water?
The temps have been below freezing for a week (unless you're talking Celsius for some reason, under 32 is freezing). When you're camping out, you don't have to worry about pipes bursting in the attic of your house or in the apartment above you.

I went shopping today here in TX to pick up some fresh veggies / fruit and they were out of everything due to power outages. I think the older people (like me) have food stocked. I have canned goods, MRE's, full freezer etc becasue I'm a prepper. I also have a pantry. Most of the new homes don't even have pantrys. It got down to 6 here. I have warm clothes from camping (gloves), hats. thermal socks, sub zero coats etc., but most people in Southern TX don't have that kind of wardrobe because it hasn't gotten that cold in their (or their and grandparents) lifetime.

Mrs. Texan has enough of a stockpile for 3 months, plus I have Life Straws and other survival gear. Food was no problema.
The power went out for 24 hours and it was cold, but we were fine. Hey, I'm an Eagle Scout, so piece of cake, right?
A pipe in the wall burst after the power came back on even though I had every faucet in the house going at a steady stream. Now we're staying in a hotel. The plumbers will be out tomorrow and the earliest a restoration company can come out is next Friday. Oh, well--there's nothing we can't replace.

The temps have been below freezing for a week (unless you're talking Celsius for some reason, under 32 is freezing). When you're camping out, you don't have to worry about pipes bursting in the attic of your house or in the apartment above you.

I was stocked up and prepared for the storm. I was not prepared to find out how bad the systems failed. It got cold here, we have blankets and a fireplace. The power was off and on. We had batteries, candles, and gas to cook with. The water got cut off we filled tubs, had bottled water, and collected snow/ snow melt.
My tankless water heater froze without power, I was not prepared for that. My back bedroom was soaked by one of the heaters thawing out. So I need new flooring and maybe new water heaters, we weren't prepared for that.

Im figuring things out but some realities were surprising. Like extra water we had stored in garage froze so was worthless because we had no heat or
propane to melt it. We have food but couldntcook anything unless we built a fire outside. Toilets needed water so we hauled water from the pool but it was hard work once the pool froze and we need more buckets. Using melted snow was worthless because it took forever to melt and took buckets and buckets to get a gallon.

I think you explained better than I did. This was much nastier than the typical DFW ice storm I would occasionally hear about during the Thanksgiving-Xmas holiday travel cycle. Freezing temps and no power for more than a day, in houses just NOT built for cold weather in mind (just like any other place far enough south in the US), is a bad combination.

During the O'error years, I personally witnessed three local coal powerplants undergo shutdown, dismantling and removal. My neighbor is an architect, who had to "reverse engineer" assembly blueprints for those plants new owners, IN CHINA. Those three plants would've prevented ALL of the electrical shutdowns South of Beltway 8, West to State Highway 35, East to State Highway 146 and all the way South to the Gulf Coast, including Galveston.
Texas WAS ready for a 100 year storm. Until it's coal fired plants were unceremoniously stolen from them on a Statewide basis.

We're always well prepared for weather events but this one was and is a strain. It's one thing to lose power and it's one thing to have cold weather but record cold weather and a power outage that was avoidable by the utilities is a little much.

Same here. The one thing I should have done as suggested by Drink Like Vikings, which I always do for hurricanes, is fill the tub with water. We are on a boil notice because water pressure dropped below whatever the magic number is.
Fun fact: One of my friends who is on the water district board told me the reason for the pressure is that hydrostatic pressure up in the tanks keeps organisms down in the pipes from swimming up into the fresh water. That's why the pressure has to be maintained.

We have water, sort of. There's a faucet between the well tank and the cutoff valve. So we strung a hose to get up to the house. We have a few horse tubs full of water and a variety of buckets. Not great but survivable.

A good friend of mine spent his senior year in college (back in the mid-80s) in Japan and he would write me about once a week.
He would complain endlessly about their food but ended one letter with "Hey! Gotta run. We're going out for pizza!! FINALLY!"
Next letter I got from him was a whole page of descriptions of seaweed and anchovy covered pizzas, amongst many other disgusting combinations. Nothing even approaching Canadian Bacon and Pineapple (God's Pizza).

We're doing that now. Going to get a transfer switch put in so we can run the well, septic and either the furnace or the AC in the kennel off the 8750 watt generator. More cans to double the amount of gas we can have on hand. Better insulation for the pipes. And so on.

Yep. I learned to not let a Coleman Dual Fuel campstove go more n' four years without a burn. It ran, but weakly and intermittently. Bit of research indicates to treat it the way they did old brass radiators in the pre-aluminum days. Boil the hell out of the burners and cook-off the oxides-and-dust combination, delivered thanks to Galveston's salt-air. *sigh*

They forced franchisees to buy their supplies (forks, napkins, etc) at crazy inflated prices (double or more) from either a sister company or a subsidiary. So essentially a hidden cost, and it of course wrecked profits for store owners.
That was just one of the problems but it was a big one. I actually really loved Quizno's for a while. Their chicken bacon ranch was amazing. It's a shame.

Place it over a regular "taper" dinner candle. As the candle burns down, it keeps drawing needed O2 from the holes, but the copper keeps drawing heat from the chimney "flue" effect on the tube.

They forced franchisees to buy their supplies (forks, napkins, etc) at crazy inflated prices (double or more) from either a sister company or a subsidiary. So essentially a hidden cost, and it of course wrecked profits for store owners.
I worked two years for a consumer product manufacturing company that had to buy its product packaging at greatly inflated prices from another company owned by retired executives.
Great company in many respects and a household name, but it had a few questionable practices.
A few years after I left, the founder's son stepped back into the picture and put an end to this.

Place it over a regular "taper" dinner candle. As the candle burns down, it keeps drawing needed O2 from the holes, but the copper keeps drawing heat from the chimney "flue" effect on the tube.

LOL. I banged the back of my head (chin not on chest) and when I came to, I was on one knee, had popped a quick release assembly, and was unbuckling my harness. I didn't rotate my elbows in once and jammed my weapon buttstock into my left triceps. I didn't keep my feet together once and all my weight went into my knees. You get the picture. Thanks. Turned off the water after the faucet cracked and opened all the faucets to drain the pipes. We should be above freezing by 7am .
If I knew we wouldn't have power when this started I would have shut off the water at the start and drained the pipes. I had enough water for all my needs. Should have done that when I knew it was going to be 5 days of freezing weather.

My old GP, a cardiologist did everything. When retired said you can't do it that way anymore, get a GP and then referred to a cardiologist. So I get a GP and he refers me to every other doc for anything.
As I was on testosterone the new GP referred me to an endocrinologist. I did one phone call meeting and then met her in person yesterday.
She covers her hair w/ a scarf (hijab?). Yet in this meeting she actually examines/fondles my balls for the exam. My question is how a devout Muslim? who wears a hijab is allowed to fondle a stranger's balls when her male relative is not present? Seems incongruous to me, is that the right word?

OK. Get a used angel-food cake pan from Goodwill for 50 cents. Find a tall, thin aluminum tumbler or some similar metal cylinder while you are there. Fill cake pan full of sand or fine gravel. Stick candle on center spike of cake pan. Use icepick to punch holes in end of tumbler, if open cylinder not found. Invert tumbler, and wedge into sand. Done.

I've been reading some about the Texas power grid situation. I remember something about this, but Texas is basically on its own grid -- not well tied into the rest of the CONUSA grid. This made getting wholesale power from the rest of the country very hard and expensive.
Again, I don't know the details or how it works, but some customers are set up on variable rate plans -- their rate is tied to the market prices. Now, during this crisis, the wholesale price hit $9K/MW-hr from a normal of $50 or so.
I was just reading how some of these variable rate customers just got bills for $Ks for a month. Basically their power bill is 10-20x normal.

Years ago I worked with a guy who built an actual, working, legally registered wooden car. That thing was amazing. I asked him, how do you register a handmade wooden car? It goes by the year, make and model of the chassis he built it on. But the cab: floors, doors, dashboard, hood, all of it was hand made from wood. In basic form, it looked like an old 30s car.

Just withdrawing. I can get him to lap up a bit of wet food and the water i add to his dry food. But it's not enough. He was diagnosed with an enlarged heart just before Thanksgiving. Vet is surprised he is still here. Up until yesterday he was acting his usual self since we started the meds.
