How can people in TX not have 10 days worth of food in the house?
Posted by: Cicero Kaboom! Kid. I went shopping today here in TX to pick up some fresh veggies / fruit and they were out of everything due to power outages. I think the older people (like me) have food stocked. I have canned goods, MRE's, full freezer etc becasue I'm a prepper. I also have a pantry. Most of the new homes don't even have pantrys. It got down to 6 here. I have warm clothes from camping (gloves), hats. thermal socks, sub zero coats etc., but most people in Southern TX don't have that kind of wardrobe because it hasn't gotten that cold in their (or their and grandparents) lifetime. During the O'error years, I personally witnessed three local coal powerplants undergo shutdown, dismantling and removal. My neighbor is an architect, who had to "reverse engineer" assembly blueprints for those plants new owners, IN CHINA. Those three plants would've prevented ALL of the electrical shutdowns South of Beltway 8, West to State Highway 35, East to State Highway 146 and all the way South to the Gulf Coast, including Galveston. Texas WAS ready for a 100 year storm. Until it's coal fired plants were unceremoniously stolen from them on a Statewide basis. Frozen water pipes in TX can be excused. A co-worker here in CO did a major house update. Put in the fancy fridge water system. That line froze and leaked twice and the builder told them to just put a vent or something in the sheetrock in that wall so they could open it and get warm air in around the fragile pipe when temps get low. Reportedly that works fine but I would have been livid at the builder for the situation. We get down below zero for a night or 2 every year.

Like extra water we had stored in garage froze so was worthless because we had no heat or propane to melt it. We have food but couldntcook anything unless we built a fire outside. Toilets needed water so we hauled water from the pool but it was hard work once the pool froze and we need more buckets. Using melted snow was worthless because it took forever to melt and took buckets and buckets to get a gallon.

I could have eked out 2 weeks if necessary, but it wouldn't have been pretty. No excuse really. Houston area should always be prepared given our not infrequent flooding/storm events. But the area generally isn't prepared, as attested by the emptying of grocery stores whenever one of these emergencies shows up.

Once we get our water back on, we can see if the tankless water heaters need to be replaced and if that is where the leak in the back bedroom is from. The drywall is fine and so is the molding. The carpet/pad will have to go.

That pizza thing in Italy (at least the first part) is absolutely correct. Back when I was in the Navy, we would travel to Gaeta for ship visits occasionally, and one of our fellows failed to listen to the *very specific* warning we gave him - repeatedly - about ordering pepperoni would get you sweet peppers. He was absolutely butthurt about getting the wrong pizza. We warned you, dude. Don't listen to the guy who met his wife here and speaks Italian. This guy was a Chief, too; you'd think he'd have enough experience to 1) listen to other Chiefs and 2) see number 1).

Prepper's corner: Take a candle. Place a clay flower pot over the candle. Place something under the pot's edges to keep it raised so oxygen can circulate. The flame from the candle will heat the clay pot. It will multiply the flames temperature effect.

Superior "candle heat" trick. 1.5" I.D. copper tubing. Ten inch section thereof. Drill 1/8th holes about a half inch apart, evenly spaced both laterally and radially, all but the last 1 inch of both ends of the tube.
Place it over a regular "taper" dinner candle. As the candle burns down, it keeps drawing needed O2 from the holes, but the copper keeps drawing heat from the chimney "flue" effect on the tube. The story about what Quizno's did to franchisees is very interesting, and terrible.
They forced franchisees to buy their supplies (forks, napkins, etc) at crazy inflated prices (double or more) from either a sister company or a subsidiary. So essentially a hidden cost, and it of course wrecked profits for store owners. That was just one of the problems but it was a big one. I actually really loved Quizno's for a while. Their chicken bacon ranch was amazing. It's a shame. Posted by: ... at February 19, 2021 11:43 That happened to my Dad in the 60s. A pizza/Italian chain called Cibo's. They forced franchisees to buy their supplies (forks, napkins, etc) at crazy inflated prices (double or more) from either a sister company or a subsidiary. So essentially a hidden cost, and it of course wrecked profits for store owners. I worked two years for a consumer product manufacturing company that had to buy its product packaging at greatly inflated prices from another company owned by retired executives. Great company in many respects and a household name, but it had a few questionable practices. A few years after I left, the founder's son stepped back into the picture and put an end to this. I thought I got away with no problems when I discovered this afternoon that my faucet head in my patio had developed a pin hole leak. No problem as it was only a drip and I could either replace the faucet or JB Weld. Well a couple hours later it went from a pin hole to a full crack and I had to shut off the water. Then I saw a brown spot on my ceiling and the spot in the attic where it would originate is practically inaccessible. I had inspected the attic earlier and saw or heard no leaking. Hoping it's just a spot I missed prior to replacing my roof but don't think I'm that lucky.

Do turn off your water at the meter or house valve, before you go to sleep tonight? I really, really, REALLY urge you to do so, yes? And after, open every faucet in the house. Not for fear of freezing, but fear of FLOODING. Drain every bit of that plumbing that you can possibly draw down. Prevent disaster, or embrace it. It's a binary choice in these conditions. OK, this is too weird not to share.
My old GP, a cardiologist did everything. When retired said you can't do it that way anymore, get a GP and then referred to a cardiologist. So I get a GP and he refers me to every other doc for anything. As I was on testosterone the new GP referred me to an endocrinologist. I did one phone call meeting and then met her in person yesterday. She covers her hair w/ a scarf (hijab?). Yet in this meeting she actually examines/fondles my balls for the exam. My question is how a devout Muslim? who wears a hijab is allowed to fondle a stranger's balls when her male relative is not present? Seems incongruous to me, is that the right word? I just learned something that sucks ass.
I've been doing research at night about Vanessa's condition, and tonight I've been reading journal abstracts about different vermian malformations in Dandy-Walker babies. One from 2007 notes that then-recent advances in imaging were allowing doctors to diagnose these malformations in utero with a much greater degree of success. I learned about Vanessa's condition by these means, and felt lucky that the technology gave me time to prepare myself for this outcome, but the scientist writing the article laments that since the advent of these techniques, these pregnancies were being terminated at a rate of... 80 fucking percent. For a disease that a majority of properly treated infants can survive with a decent-to-normal life. People are savages and technology only makes us more effectively savage. I've been reading some about the Texas power grid situation. I remember something about this, but Texas is basically on its own grid -- not well tied into the rest of the CONUSA grid. This made getting wholesale power from the rest of the country very hard and expensive. Again, I don't know the details or how it works, but some customers are set up on variable rate plans -- their rate is tied to the market prices. Now, during this crisis, the wholesale price hit $9K/MW-hr from a normal of $50 or so. I was just reading how some of these variable rate customers just got bills for $Ks for a month. Basically their power bill is 10-20x normal. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at February 20, 2021 02:35 AM (Mzdiz) 539

Evenin' Horde...
That slidin' doggie looks like an Australian Cattle Dog. Typical for the breed... lot's of energy and easily entertained. Speakin' of ACD's, took mine to the park (just a big lawn) this evening to get some of her energy out. There were three young ladies sitting on a blanket. One of the other dog owners comes back from their direction after cleaning up after his dog. Says to me under his breath: "See the blonde over there? She's got balls." Just then the girls - er, guy and girls - get up to fold up their blanket and leave. Sure enough, the blonde, wearing a verrry short skirt, has the equipment, a-flappin' in the wind. Pretty sure he meant for everyone within line of sight to see it. Seems to me if you think you're a girl and want to be a girl, you might want to put on some panties so as to make it less obvious that you're a dude. That's a reasonable proposition, but the trans cultists and their enablers are not reasonable people. Posted by: Average Guy at February 20, 2021 03:00 AM (b2diN) 553

Years ago I worked with a guy who built an actual, working, legally registered wooden car. That thing was amazing. I asked him, how do you register a handmade wooden car? It goes by the year, make and model of the chassis he built it on. But the cab: floors, doors, dashboard, hood, all of it was hand made from wood. In basic form, it looked like an old 30s car. If you can squirt some water from an eye dropper into your cat's mouth, it will make him more comfortable. If you can get buprenorphine (an opiate that, among other things, can be given to cats for pain relief), you can squirt a bit of that too. You'd have to get it from a vet though. Whatever you do -- NEVER have an animal euthanized without completely sedating or anesthetizing it first, and NEVER allow a "heart stick" (intracardiac injection) at all unless it's absolutely necessary to avoid a worse fate.

I know, SFGoth. He's not in any obvious pain
Just withdrawing. I can get him to lap up a bit of wet food and the water i add to his dry food. But it's not enough. He was diagnosed with an enlarged heart just before Thanksgiving. Vet is surprised he is still here. Up until yesterday he was acting his usual self since we started the meds. Posted by: My life is insanity at February 20, 2021 06:12 AM (Z/jzm) 612

Camping weekend with the scouts, all in tents. 27 degrees out here. Rifle range time and first aid hacks on deck for today, which promises to be sunny. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at February 20, 2021 06:41 AM (/VB9J) Processing 0.06, elapsed 0.0741 seconds. |
