NASA Successfully Lands Perseverance Rover on Mars; Begins Transmitting Images Back to Earth

And open thread.

Interesting fact: this mission was accomplished only due to the selfless non-involvement of tens of thousands of Goucher College graduates.

There aren't pictures yet, or at least they're not sharing them. I guess there's a delay due to the distance.

This video from Real Engineering (great channel, btw) is about the rover's engineering (duh).

Thanks to illiniwek.

Cities like Fort Worth are struggling to find water to distribute since the beverage facilities in state are all down due to power outage. Seems like FEMA should have stepped up by now with out of state sourcing to help out Texas. This is a huge fail for the Biden "Administration" in that it has been a week and no FEMA response. I know what you mean.

There was a video game out from Microsoft. It was travel through the solar system using actual physics and real time. It was boring as hell.

The only good part was too difficult to actually do that was to meet up with a space station in geo sync orbit and then dock to an air lock.

It was very hard to do given the placement on the ship for the docking air lock. They had a cheat you could get the computer to take over and dock while you watched. It was amazing and I realize I could never do that and shit canned the game.

Buzz Aldrin was picked for the Space Program in large part due to the thesis he wrote in 1963 that earned him a Doctor of Science Degree from MIT was called: Line-of-Sight Guidance Techniques for Manned Orbital Rendezvous.

The concepts and math involved in matching orbits (especially higher to lower and vice versa) and successfully docking are mind-blowingly difficult.

His thesis is here if you'd like to physically damage your brain by trying to understand it:
