The Morning Rant

RUSH, WE HARDLY KNEW YE

I knew this day was coming, I knew Rush wouldn't live forever, but I'm sadder than I thought I'd be, and I can't stop thinking about him being gone. First Trump gets schlonged by the Deep State and now this. The only good part of 2021 so far is the implosion of the Lincoln Project, but even that is small compensation. I have a number of things to say and it will take more than one rant to say it all.

First, let's talk about the snobbery of Con, Inc.

Ace touched on this yesterday:

I'm very, very tired of the Snob Jocks.

This is a claim these Twitter Intellectuals make -- they read and you don't. They write and you don't.

And yet, they seem to spend all of their time "reading" and "writing" on... Twitter.

Which is not generally considered a medium of belles-lettres.

... the greatest fear of these pencil-necked weaklings is to be mistaken for one second, even if it's just online, for a member of the (shudder) working class.

Yes, but I don't think this is something new. This goes back to rich kid William F. Buckley, son of an oil magnate, went to school in London, Paris, etc. Very high-class, very hoity-toity. And this is reflected in National Review during his time as editor/publisher.

Rush once told the story of him being invited to visit Buckley at his home in Connecticut. This was just after his show went national and he was a conservative phenom. So he arrives at Buckley's upscale estate and he feels kind of awkward and doesn't quite know how to act around these East Coast toffs in their fine house, but everyone is friendly towards him and he is ushered into an opulent sitting room of some sort with a bar on one side. He's asked if he would like a drink, and what would he like? So Rush tells them he'd like a Diet Coke and immediately there's some consternation as, he supposed, they were expecting a request for an adult beverage and so they dispatch someone who leaves in a bit of panic and then awhile later, he is handed some sort of dark beverage in a glass that tasted indescribably bad. And Rush's punchline to the story was, "I don't know what it was, but it definitely wasn't Diet Coke."

So what we have here was the new kid on the block meeting the Conservative Establishment, or, if you will, what would eventually become Con, Inc. Bush was basically a working stiff who had suddenly become successful and Buckley was Old Money. They were from two different worlds and they didn't known quite what to do with each other, even though both knew they were on the same team.

But Buckley was good at holding disparate conservative elements together, using the National Review, the standard-bearer for American conservative thought:

The most influential synthesis of the subject remains George H. Nash's The Conservative Intellectual Tradition since 1945 .... He argued that postwar conservatism brought together three powerful and partially contradictory intellectual currents that previously had largely been independent of each other: libertarianism, traditionalism, and anticommunism. Each particular strain of thought had predecessors earlier in the twentieth (and even nineteenth) centuries, but they were joined in their distinctive postwar formulation through the leadership of William F. Buckley Jr. and National Review. The fusion of these different, competing, and not easily reconciled schools of thought led to the creation, Nash argued, of a coherent modern Right.

I suppose that it was inevitable that once he passed in 2007, National Review would eventually drift off course. Their "Against Trump" issue was a low point, and now one of the senior writers' "hot takes" the day Rush's death is announced is to trash him. And then when the inevitable blowback occurred, he said that it did not surprise him that (get this) "non readers who like shock-jock radio dislike writers", and that is some weapons-grade elitism right there.

I think it was there in Buckley's day, but he knew how to keep a lid on it, and Dougherty's piece would not have seen the light of day.

Because Rush is kind of like Trump. That is, he doesn't play by their rules. The Con, Inc. of the 80s and 90s wanted to carry on a conversation about ideas on an intellectual level, but even back then we were way past the point where that was possible. Con, Inc. didn't recognize this, but Rush sure did, which is why he mocked and ridiculed the left at every opportunity. And thus he's the godfather of ace, us, the Babylon Bee, and pretty much every conservative sh1t-poster on the internet.

Because "illustrating the absurd by being absurd" is a necessary component of the long war.

Wednesday Who Dis: We recently discovered a limited-run miniseries that I missed the first time around (2019), Beecham House, which I think may have been shown on PBS. I thought that the male lead, Tom Bateman, looked to be a fine, strapping young fellow suitable for a 'who dis'. And as this series was set in India, there of course had to be some young Indian lasses who are absolute smokeshows, so I chose Pallavi Sharda, who has actually born in Australia and does a lot of her work there.

I look at it this way. Trump (I'm guessing) wouldn't *make* you, or *spam* you to take a vaccine you didn't want to take.

Trump saw a *demand* for vaccines, so he tried to get the government to spur delivery of this demand ASAP, especially because locker-downers were saying "Until we get a vaccine", and Trump saw the damage that it was doing to the economy.

I don't put any of this on Trump.

I like Buckley's book God And Man At Yale. And it definitely was a milestone for a burgeoning post-war conservative ("Back to Church") movement.

However, I have come to regret and seriously reject Buckley's sabotage of the John Birch Society, which I have come to understand 1) was not as racist as portrayed, and 2) almost all its predictions about what Marxists would do to this country have been fulfilled--or at least significantly demonstrated.

37 three powerful and partially contradictory intellectual currents that previously had largely been independent of each other: libertarianism, traditionalism, and anticommunism.
++++
The anticommunism was the glue that held the Reagan-era and beyond conservative movement together. The warmongers, the social moderates or liberals, the fiscal conservatives, the social conservatives - they often don't share much. The one thing they shared was a mutual agreement that America shouldn't be a communist state. This glue weakened considerably after the fall of the USSR and the continuing Gramscian March cemented wildly huge gains.

The world of Conservative, Inc. that bound its disparate parts together through anticommunism is long gone and many aspects of the vestigial movement are now communist supporters themselves because the new glue for their side in the realignment - anti-populism/anti-nationalism - requires alliance with the old enemy.

What I love about Rush and what is most amazing is his consistency, over 3 decades he delivered.
He didn't get complacent, he didn't mail it in.
All of this under constant attack... he was always the enemy.

He also never turned his back on conservatism, because he actually believed what he was saying there was never a time that he was caught opposing something he said 6 months before.

You know, sort of like when a Democrat wants to sent a young black man to jail for being charged with something, without that whole messy requirement to have a trial, and a finding of guilty.

Harris should be familiar with that concept.

82 Came across a vid of Camille Paglia praising Rush, calling him brilliant, and attacking libs for disparaging him. Paglia and Rush liked each other - Paglia said they had met in the '90's and smoked cigars together. No surprise that an eccentric but entertaining lefty firebrand prof understood and got along with Rush a lot better than stick-up-their-butt Establishment Republicans like Noonan.

Pic 5 of him with Susan was my clue to their connection. I've never seen the Hank Williams biopic, but that hat he's wearing is a lot larger in the brim than the hat I've seen in many pics of the real Hank Sr. His was a creamy, broad-brimmed fedora, the Stetson Open Road-style. I have one myself. Of course Hank Sr. might well have worn more Western-style lids too.

BJ Cliton destroyed our manufacturing sector by signing the abortion of NAFTA. I hope his brain turns into Swiss cheese from whichever STD manages to get there first. Puddinhead O'Biden also voted for it even knowing that POS law would cost American jobs.

It cut the Republican donations substantially from individuals, which was the real reason for it.

Todd Herman was hosting yesterday and tried many times to keep from breaking down. Snerdley broke down on Hannity's show last night. Me right along with them. Given what happened these last elections it doesn't bode well.

They listened to the left and didn't listen to Rush. They made their mind up without listening and judging for themselves. A hallmark of the brainwashed. They don't think for themselves and assume every one else is the same. They thought we were the robots and made that claim over and over.

The left accuses the right of what the left is actually doing or is plotting to do.

120 posted this yesterday, and the same thoughts are still with me, so I'm'a re-share them:

As saddened as I am by Rush's passing, (and that is a lot) I also have a growing feeling of, what?, timeliness?, inevitability ?, cosmic synchronism? ... ? maybe just a sense of hearing the grinding of the gears that keep everything spinning along ...
a feeling that in so many ways we are entering into a new time, we have learned a lot of new lessons, and Rush, having walked with us down this path for so many years, has left a space, now, for a new voice to rise to meet these times.
I have no idea what that will mean, who that will be, or what that voice will say, but I know that every death also means a birth somewhere.

and if you feel both hope and a little fear as you read this, I'm right there with you.

Hold firm to the truth, and it cannot fail to win in the end.

One more thing to add: I don't see this coming from anyone currently on the horizon; I think it's gonna come outta nowhere, kind of like how combat generals rise up from obscurity in wartime, or they used to, anyway ... Sheridan, Sherman, Grant among others are what I have in mind.

Cash is essentially untraceable. Get rid of cash, and you get rid of things like garage sales, lemonade stands and Craigslist.

Paperless? Not so much. When you use anything other than cash, someone-- the government, your credit card provider, your bank-- knows what you purchased and how much it cost. That also means that someone can limit what you can purchase.

***

Honey is there to put on the sopaipillas, or to take directly, to kill the burning sensation of the hot green or red chiles. It works with any super-spicy food -- anything sweet will douse the fire. Water will spread the heat around, but the honey or sweet stuff will put it out.

I get the impression the NM difference is because they put the green or red chile sauce on everything. I wouldn't be surprised if they popped it onto ice cream.

Because the goal was NEVER to generate less paperwork. And this should generally be a point we all recognize - you don't spend this much time and effort on going "paperless" and 40 years later wind up with MORE paperwork if that isn't exactly what the people enacting the programs and policies wanted.

Less paperwork would mean ultimately, less government, fewer bureaucrats and less opportunities for lawyers. And the first two groups are the ones that have been in charge of this crap.

214 Most truly intelligent people get directed to useful fields like engineering, medicine, science, etc. Those who don't have direction become intellectuals--people who believe their understanding of things is greater than the people actually involved in what the intellectual deigns to focus on. This belief that intellectual thought absent physical experience provides superior understanding is behind most of our current problems coming out of Washington.

I'm pretty sure the courts have found that you can't draft bills so narrowly that they become a Bill of Attainder either.

Besides, this can become a political football (assuming another Republican hold in Washington). If it's just legislation Trump can pingpong in and out of the Arlington cemetery for decades with each bill that wants to chime in.

"Act 343 shall no longer inhibit twice-impeached Presidents from being interned at Arlington National Cemetary".

That's the thing, as the Democrat Party is the Party of Willfulness, there is no doubt that they intend to stay in power without end. But, provided that the American people can have any say against them, this is the defect about doing such things "under law".

If they are going to do this with a 50% vote, it can be undone with a 50% vote. The Willfull party has reduced us to slap-fighting.

280 I saw Buckley at a speech on campus in the early 90s. He was asked if he liked Rush Limbaugh and proceeded with a 5 minute soliloquy about some historical figures who went out on a boat so a secret could be told. Buckley ended the story by whispering, "I like him."

Rush has a longer lasting legacy than Buckley with all the Rush babies out there who learned to think for themselves. I raised two of them.

At 15 I talked my dad into dropping me downtown at the library of congress so I could look at some contemporaneous sources and primary sources on an ap history paper I was doing on Joseph McCarthy. I came out understanding that everyone's "understanding" of McCarthy was bullshit.

If that was a lie and if that "everyone knows" was wrong, what else was.

Most everything.

And at all my elite private schools and universities....they were either shallow or unlearned or complicit.

Was it me? Was I wrong? A bit of research with an eye toward agendas....nope, not me.

299 155 Elitism implies there's something "Elite" about the clowns at NRO. There isn't. And same is true of the ex-NRO's at the Dispatch or the Bulwark. Posted by: rcocean at February 19, 2021 11:36 AM (evE25)

Yeah. I'm not entirely comfortable with populism. After all, the Founding Fathers weren't a random collection of slobs. They were the best and brightest of their generation. The trouble I have is that today's elites are mediocrities who think they're smarter than anybody else. Their failures have been evident since the '60's at least - everything from the War on Poverty to the Iraq War - and yet they never admit mistakes and double down on their errors. It's infuriating to be talked down to by people who think they're superior, not only to you and I, but superior to Washington, Lincoln, Churchill, etc. Our "elites" are driving our civilization off the cliff and at the same time, they're turning around to tell those of us in the back seats what great drivers they are and how stupid we are.

If the Republicans start to win in the RGV, that's yet another counterbalance to Austin and the like. And Texans aren't going to long tolerate the do-nothing DAs the urban counties are getting. Let's make this absolutely clear. The conflict was started by the Birch society. If you're going to go after Eisenhower in that day and age, that was going to split the party. Furthermore, the Birch society included many prominent country club Republicans. It wasn't some ideologically special wing of the party.

Buckley's son is a liberal Obama voter. By all standards his father was much more on our side than his son could possibly be.

It still seems silly to me to insist Eisenhower was a communist agent.

We watched a documentary of Sweden yesterday. Very interesting. The gov't gives each parent/family a voucher for each child and they get to spend it on whatever school they prefer. If you're going to have the gov't involved in education, that's the way to do it.

Of course, our teachers' unions totally lose their shit over common sense ideas like this.

Posted by: OregonMuse, AoSHQ Thought Leader, Pants Monitor & Social Distancing Professional at February 19, 2021 12:09 PM (6qiL2)

375 One of the most common political discussions I would have at work is asking conservative people why they vote liberal. There was a lot of that. People who stayed in marriages for the children, believe in God, hunt, like red meat and internal combustion engines, believed in paying their own way, etc.

The most common answers were that the democrats are for the working man, and there but for the grace of God go I so who am I to judge.

In response to the second I would ask back; Why do you subvert your value system for others who will not do the same for you? Someones values will be reflected in the policies and if you give up yours...?

No answer to that one from anyone. I guess in the long run that meant that those values weren't held dear enough, so here we are.

one in every of which was recorded by an viewers member with a

For the following album, Stewart returned to enjoying bass, and
John Webster was brought in to play keyboards.
The band used Chris Taylor to play drums during rehearsals and document
the demos, with Kiss drummer Eric Singer performing throughout the second demo recording periods.
The band have been sued by the mother and father of the Native
