They have pretty good treatments for most forms of lung cancer now, but he must've had a type that was resistant to the best treatments we have today. I hear numbers like 80% to 90%. Sorry he was in the 10% to 20%.

I knew a buyer back in the 90's (all buyers I've known have smoked at one point in their lives--must be the stress of the job) that got it in one lung, and they removed the lung. A few years later, he got in in the other one. It was a slow death of want for air. Horrible.

My grandfather stopped smoking in his 50's when his doctor told him smoking wasn't healthy; this was back in the 1950's, so amazing the doctor did this. My grandfather quit cold turkey, didn't have a smoke again, but when he died at the ripe old age of 93, they found a large mass in one of his lungs. I guess you can't completely run away from it if you've been smoking for 30+ years, but Grandpa had a good run.

Very true. Radon gas causes a good number of lung cancers, as does asbestos, but sometimes for no known reason. I know one lady that passed, and neither her nor her husband EVER smoked (7th Day Adventists, so very health concious), and no radon gas in the area they lived in.

His blog-length writing was funny and well done. IMO, the move to Twitter ruined him as a satirist. When you only have a few lines to make your point and only a few minutes to get it out there before it becomes irrelevant, your thought process necessarily becomes less... thoughtful. Add to that that the medium rewards timeliness and shallowness by calling it a "hot take" and it becomes the perfect feedback loop. All that said, Iowahawk still got in the occasional bit of real insight like his "skin suit" comment.

241 Lung cancer seems to happen fast because it's not usually discovered until too late in it's growth. As with Rush the symptoms are mild or elusive.

My neighbor just dies from it. Like Rush he had class 4 which is the worst level as there is too much spread of the cancer to other parts of the body.

Brain cancer is also a sneaky one as the symptoms are just headaches and maybe some dizziness until they get worse and by then it's too late to do much.

A few weeks after my mom found out she was pregnant with me, 4th kid, complete shock, my dad reluctantly went to the Dr. about a sore throat and cough that wouldn't go away. Poor family but dad had just got a promotion and raise as a machinist for Boeing and was going to spoil the hell out of me and decided he needed to take care of this "cold". No cold, Dr. found out it was was esophageal cancer. A few months later had his larynx removed, and a few months after that was 6 foot under, and a few months later I was born. I really hate cancer.

IIRC, Rush made his MJF comment during the time that there was a debate about using fetal stem cells for research. Fox cut a commercial basically saying that if you weren't for fetal stem cell research, you were dooming Fox to live without a cure for Parkinson's. Rush said that Fox was exaggerating his symptoms for the camera.

After the usual pearl-clutching, it turned out that Fox temporarily stopped taking his medication before shooting the commercial clip.

Clinton's scandals were really starting to overshadow his presidency, and Rush had a great ad. It was for the health drink "White Water," with a new flavor of "IMPEEEAAACH." My father was laughing so hard he nearly drove off the road, which unfortunately was a sheer cliff. My mother clearly wanted to get mad at him for it after he corrected the station wagon, but she was laughing too hard.

Believe it or not, Barack Obama is the person who got me to start listening to Rush. He kept complaining about him early in his first term and I said, let me find out what this guy is all about. They all failed and went off the air due to lack of audience. Then they tried again in the early 2000s, with that "Air America" fiasco. Same result. Taken off the air due to no audience.
