John Hayward On Conservative Principles – Play Fair And Lose, Or Bend Your Principles To Defend Liberty
[Buck Throckmorton]

John Hayward (aka “Doc Zero” tweeted out an excellent essay a few days ago, pointing out that with free speech and liberty almost extinguished, conservatives will have to fight for our rights in a manner that is in conflict with our “peacetime principles.” With the left using Alinskyite tactics to make us submit to repression - because not doing so would violate our principles -- Hayward articulates that the survival of liberty requires that we “accept the sad necessity of bending those principles until the day they are no longer fatal weaknesses.”

A very important principle of mine is that my principles will never require me to sacrifice my liberty.

Is it possible to fight against totalitarian statists without ever compromising conservative "principles?" Is it better to play "fair," and constantly lose? Can you grapple with monsters without becoming a monster? That's the question at the heart of the schism on the Right.

Many works of passive, academic conservatism make for stimulating reading, and they'd be great stuff to bring along if you were leading a band of refugees onto an island to build a new society from scratch. But they have little relevance to the desperate battle we're actually in.

We're up against a totalitarian ideology that has already corrupted every single institution of American society. We're not beginning a high-minded constitutional debate with the Left - we're fighting a desperate last-ditch battle to preserve what little remains of FREE SPEECH.

How do you fight back against cancel culture? Do you refuse to participate, living by your principles and giving high-minded free passes to left-wingers who commit speech crimes? Or do you insist THEY get canceled and ruined too, forcing them to play by their own rules?

During the Tea Party years, its activists were sometimes attacked as hypocrites if they used any benefits of the Leviathan State they claimed to oppose. Collect a single dollar of government benefits, and you supposedly lost the moral stature to rail against deficit spending.

From these examples and many others, conservatives must learn that we are not criticizing the system from the outside - we are within it, and must fight on the very hostile economic and political battlefield that has been created for us.

We are not at the beginning of a great drama about the relationship between people and the State - we're well past curtain call on the third act, and things are looking very grim for those who value liberty and tradition. The Right played no role in writing the script.

We are not having a spirited discussion with the Left about how to steer the ship of the State. The ship's crew is entirely against us, most of the compartments are locked, and you'll be thrown overboard if you say anything about the rapidly approaching iceberg.

We have already watched totalitarianism consume a thoroughly demoralized and destabilized American society. Now we are watching totalitarianism slide inexorably into authoritarianism, and you know what comes after that. We cannot stop that process by politely objecting to it.

It's not easy to fight a battle on those terms without losing sight of peacetime principles. For generations now, the American people have been bludgeoned into submission by Alinsky tactics that turn their lofty principles and beloved traditions against them.

The barbarians camped outside the gates sneered and said, "If you were so civilized, you wouldn't need walls and gates to keep us out." And so the gates were opened and the walls torn down... to be replaced by higher, uglier prison walls built by the victorious invaders.

We're at the point where people on the Right must think hard about both grand strategy and short-term tactics. We must change the momentum of history before it sweeps this country - and all of the civilized world - into a darkness it cannot escape without fire and bloodshed.

There is no place left for the Gentleman Losers, the directors of Failure Theater, the grifters, the arrogant "remnant" smugly convinced they can emerge from their bunkers one day to thunderous applause for having been right all along.

But there is also no room for fighting blindly, for angrily lashing out to no good purpose, for energy wasted on pointless fights, for vulgar displays that alienate the public and make our situation even worse. The Angry Loser is no more effective than the Gentleman Loser.

We're not in anything close to a fair ideological fight, and we haven't been for 30 years or more. It is beyond pointless to keep waiting for nonexistent referees to throw flags on the Left's ugly plays. Dig in, push back, and gain some yards.

But we have to move in the right direction. We have to run plays that score points. We DO have plenty of opportunities - the American people know something is hideously wrong with the world the Left has made. Even the pandemic has not completely subdued them.

How do you speak to a people desperate for brave leadership, when half the words you would use to reach them have been forbidden? How do you sell liberty to people terrorized into hating each other and believing they can't get through a single day without help from the State?

It certainly is difficult. It's hard to fight an utterly unprincipled adversary without compromising a few of your own. If your end goal is liberty, it's not easy to plan ruthlessly effective strategies for gaining and using power. The State doesn't want YOU to control it.

Various elements of the Right have a lot of off-ramps for opting out of that difficult struggle - from GOP Establishment types making profitable accommodations with the Left, to preppers and revolution fantasists who assume all is lost and plan for the day after utter collapse.

If you're still in the game, if you really still believe it can be won, you must be prepared to get dirty, get roughed up, pick battles worth fighting, and accept the sad necessity of bending those principles until the day they are no longer fatal weaknesses.

But also you must not become lost in corruption. You must not become what you fight against. Never believe the instruments of utter darkness can be used for good ends in righteous hands - that's the delusion that swallowed the Left whole. It's not easy, but it's necessary. /end

40 This is an area that is deeply interesting to me, though, because it gets to the core of ethics and duty, to why we do what we do and what its limits are.

At what point is it acceptable to revolt against authorities? As a Christian, we believe that God has placed all authorities over us -- even the bad ones -- and told us that we must submit to them. But is there ever a place to turn on that authority because it is too evil?

We're clearly taught in scripture to refuse to follow a sinful command, whatever the cost. Christians don't actually obey human laws, we obey God's laws, and as long as the human laws coincide, we're fine with it. If the law is a neutral area, we go along with it, because we're told to submit to earthly authority.

But if the laws are contrary to God's commands, then they are not just to be defied, but nullified; they are not binding or lawful. ONLY God's law is supreme and binding.

So that is, in a sense, a rebellion against authorities, by refusing to obey. But can we take that further and remove them from power? Is it worth killing over, such as the founding fathers engaged in?

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 19, 2021 02:07 PM (KZzsI)

41

The point of American "conservative" thought, qua philosophy, as brought about in the 1950s and beyond was to oppose the fundamental nominalist heresy and defend the founding from the the rising post-modernist Frankfurt school. One of the main focuses of the philosophy was to further differentiate our Founding from the French Revolution. The way in which this was accomplished in large part was to reject "ends justify the means" theories.

We can argue about what is politically expedient, but recognize, as the Founders did, that freedom can only be maintained by an educated, moral, and homogeneous electorate, even if such electorate has to therefore be limited by certain standards (set amount of property, etc.). So as internally inconsistent as it may be, freedom can only be guaranteed where most people do not have the right to vote, but the functional voting aristocracy remains tied to an accountable morality.

45 I've never swallowed the false dichotomy between principles and fighting.

I think you can navigate. But you have to be ruthless in assessing truth and ranking values.

I've seen enough from humanity to know that God is my kernel value.

The need for God to be unit of belief is exactly the slash that cuts the Gordian Knot of Euthyphro's Dilemma.

You see Socrates believed in One God and only One God, and he found it reasonable. Euthyphro's Dilemma is his illustration mainly about multiple gods who disagree with each other and yet "piety" advanced by Euthyphro treated them as if they were uniform.

It still applies to a singular God, but only in a more muted sense. If the All-Seer is the singular perceiver of morality, there is no dilemma. Yes, he could be making it all up, but you trust that the Perfect Observer, if anyone, can see a harmonious resolution to the more diffuse claims about morality.

Interesting. I took "drain the swamp" to mean fire/prosecute the traitors and commies. In reality, when you drain something like a pond or swamp, you end up finding a lot of unseemly things at the bottom, akin to pulling masks off. I wonder, when Trump used this term, if he realized that the most he could do was force people to rip their masks off, akin to the literal swamp-draining.

61 The Bible teaches that war is, at least sometimes, permissible and necessary, if regretful. We should be reluctant and unwilling to go to war, but if we must, we should do so with vigor and determination, to get it over with as completely and swiftly as possible.

The Bible never teaches that it is wrong to end another human life only that it must be done so strictly in response to an act of evil on that person's part, such as self defense, defending another's life, or punishment for heinous crime.

But Christians like all the west have been so totally conditioned by a humanist society that we think any taking of any human life at any time (excet before birth) is always the greatest possible evil.

But the only way that can be true is if you believe that this life is all we ever have. If you believe in eternity and God as sovereign, then it can be worse to not kill someone.

Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Logan Tiberius Edwards (2012-2021) at February 19, 2021 02:11 PM (ifmtJ)

72 In Catholic moral theology, there is a concept about things you may never do, regardless of the circumstances. These actions "intrinsically evil," and basically this means that this is something that you may never do, no matter how much evil you think you're avoiding, no matter how much good you think will come of it. This idea isn't unique to Catholicism, of course; the concept of deontology shows up in other moral systems, both religious and secular. I'm using Catholicism as my reference point because it's what I know best. Basically any system that believes - in some form or another - that the ends do not justify the means, is harmonious with the Catholic understanding, and will do the trick for the purposes of this discussion.

So when it comes down to MUH PRINCIPLES, there are certain principles that I will not sacrifice, no matter what I might win by doing so. There are some things that are just intrinsically evil. For example, I don't believe in terrorizing the minor children of my political opponents. Not ever. For the same reason, I wouldn't intentionally kill the minor children of terrorists. PART II coming up...

Posted by: Masturbatin' Pete at February 19, 2021 02:11 PM (+1A9H)

73 My principles say that the marketplace is itself a fair arbiter. Reality says if we don't regulate the fuck out of Big Tech we're beyond screwed.

Posted by: Broseidon at February 19, 2021 02:11 PM (icI8A)

74 Also, as shown by David French, Mitch McConnell, Romney, McCain and Bush some of these "Good losers" weren't that at all. They were traitors who secretly wanted the other side to win. Sometimes a "good loser" is just a loser. And sometimes they're traitors.

75 Can you grapple with monsters without becoming a monster?

Become a monster and vanquish the other monsters so your children won't have to fight them. Just be ready to accept the consequences.

We all want political power. Some for money and access to boy-ass, some for power's sake and the money and status it brings, some so that they can limit the reach of government, that they may live life in peace and have freedom to pursue happiness.

82 Christian Conservatives have to come to a point when we realize that our faith trumps even the US Constitution, and that we decide what is wrong or right -- what to do or not do -- based on God's word, not the very fine words of the founding fathers. As great as they may be, they are still only human.

What this means in practice is that we may do unconstitutional things in the service of the Lord, without any twinge of conscience. It also means that the bottom line of how we define justice, truth, right, and goodness by God's word, not the Constitution.

83 Hume is the alternative to the Perfect Observer seeing harmonious moral order perfectly.

Hume never gave any reason why, if we didn't like his pretense of "ultimate" findings, we should just kill him and live on.

Hume's conclusions required at least one OUGHT, which is that we OUGHT to do as Reason requires. However, he reasoned that OUGHTs themselves were entirely illusory.

One who cannot grasp the essential moral endeavor of intellectual pursuit and the implicit "morality" (you shouldn't lie, and you shouldn't pass things off you didn't author as yours) would miss this. You have to be able to look at the vast and minute at the same time.

85 Our Founding Fathers had principles. The Abolitionists had principles. The Texas Rangers had principles. The Greatest Generation had principles. But that didn't stop any of them from getting down and dirty to do what had to be done to safeguard those principles and enable said principles to be handed on to those living in safety and improved living thanks to said down and dirty action. This is war. We need to win it, or the Republic will only be a name on a nation that no longer has a connection to 1789, much less 1776. We can write the history later; later generations will judge our success or failure, not how closely we adhered to principles that the enemy doesn't even recognize as valid.

This notion that it is unfair to jettison the rules when the rules have already been jettisoned is the kind of decadence that only an elite living behind a security wall and hired guards can maintain--because for them, the rules haven't yet been broken. Yes.Notice the root cause of the murders, riots and arson this past summer. It wasn't the law that caused that. It was the communists in charge of those areas that didn't follow the law. They told their own police forces to stand down. This should've been unacceptable to those who live there, yet it was allowed to persist.

TFG started that bullshit when he began enforcing only the laws that he liked. That's not how this is supposed to work. That's not how any of this is supposed to work.

The Constitution is the *make up* of a collective decision-making process. It is collective in its thinking. Thomas Jefferson, as Governor of Virgina authored legislation making it punishable to say lewd things to a lady. You got a night in the stocks.

The founders were a lot less absolutist than some Constitution-idolaters have made them. And a lot of that borrows from the "reasoning" of the Communist-oriented Roger Baldwin who wanted, like Kruschev to hang us with our own rope.

PART II

A large part of what gets labeled "principles" consists of a pair of ideas: (1) a preference, and (2) consistent application of that preference. I choose "preference" here because the action we choose *isn't* necessarily the only moral option. The alternatives to our preference might make us unhappy, but choosing them isn't inherently evil. It depends on a lot of other factors, including the consequences.

So, for example, if we oppose cancelling Righty McPatriarch, to be consistent we must also oppose cancelling Lefty McFeminist for a similar transgression. But I cannot say that the act of "cancelling" is inherently evil. It might be unwise. It might be situationally evil, particularly if the consequences of being cancelled exceed the harm caused by the transgression. But calling attention to a bad act, and spreading word of the bad act, and refusing to do business with a bad actor... that's not intrinsically evil. PART III coming up...

The Constitution in Jefferson's time was a series of limits on the FEDERAL Government, not State or Local governments.

It was not until later amendments and Court cases, that deemed local governments had to follow the Bill of Rights as well.

I think it was Mass that had a religious test to hold office on the books AFTER the Constitution was ratified.

I would go further and say that certain acts are so evil that they destroy your principle, or at least reveal it to have been "to win at any cost" all along. Giving up everything you believe in to defeat an evil is as bad as that evil. Doing deeds that are worse than your opponents, is at least as evil as they are.

157 Abiding by principles is good. Christians of the past built mighty nations and empires because they knew which principles were bedrock and which allowed room for flexibility. Against complete moral bankrupts, of course, the principle of reciprocation is far more important than any other. Show them that stepping over the line will have devastating consequences.

Put another way: the modern Pharisees like David French and Rod Dreher hide their inaction behind a wall of seemingly impenetrable principle. In reality, their sly treachery is merely an excuse to be lazy. It is this lack of active virtue throughout the highest levels of the Republican Party which permitted the real President, Donald Trump, to so effortlessly secure the loyalty of its base.

So we should enact legislation that takes power away from the institutions that the left controls, like West Virginia's senate did yesterday with the educational money following the student. And we should enact legislation that punishes federal agents and their allies in the private sector when they violate our rights, like being able to sue the tech giants when they defame us or prevent us from being able to speak our minds, as well as giving state and local governments the power to arrest any federal agent who tries to violate the rights of the citizens of that state.

There are plenty more things we can do and we should enact this legislation and then use it whenever our rights are being violated. Make as many states safe zones as possible and make the left pay for their totalitarian abuse of power whenever, wherever, and however we can.

We agree.

To a degree it's Hanson and his 14th amendment--but not really so, since the people's representation, Congress was given the power to rein in states--not judges.

It has been the process of the courts that judges have arrogated more and more power to their office and really is the best chance to make the Constitution a suicide pact by the conceit of judges as being "fit to judge" whatever.

I agree 100% with that. But maybe if some enterprising patriots abandon their principles, so to speak, and make some examples out of them during the coming Dark Times, then maybe the leftward march through the education system can be derailed for a generation or two.

And to circle back to the topic du jour, I think my principles of defending free speech end at Islamism and Socialism. I guess that's a principle I'm willing to abandon in our current situation we find ourselves in.

PART III

"Consistency" only makes sense with "cooperation." As others have noted, the success of a tit-for-tat strategy is elementary Game Theory. It's a dominant strategy. Remember: while we're morally obligated to avoid doing things that are intrinsically evil, as long as we're just selecting from preferences, we're not abandoning our principles if we change our preferences. It only makes sense to be consistent if we're not being harmed in the process, if our consistency is not being used as a weapon against us.

To put it another way, we *propose* consistency: I promise not to cancel you if you promise not to cancel me. If we both agree to that bargain, great. If you turn me down, I'm not bound to consistency. I'm going to argue that your cancellation of me is bad and terrible and you shouldn't do it, but I'm not obligated not to cancel you when you mess up. That wasn't part of the deal. You declined the offer of consistency.

227 This is an example of a law that a Christian can break.

Indeed. The worst of times, the most frightening and dangerous of times is when a church is most needed and most should be open. Ordering churches to close is just about the acme of evil. Christians have not just the option, but the duty to oppose this.

When I grew up, the church met no matter how many people were there or what was going on. If you had to wade into the sanctuary through a flood, and only 2 people showed up, the pastor still had church. If there was no power, they ha church in the dark with candles. If there was no heat, people bundled up.

Now church shuts down for the slightest of causes.

it is even clearer ... they use murderous/riotous tactics to destroy our liberties (enslave us) ... we fight back in self defense. But as it grows into national corruption, we may have to actually "go on the offensive" at some point. But it is still to retain our liberty, which they are offensively stealing every day. We are fighting a corrupt and advancing mafia/army ... there is no moral equivalence on "tactics" we use against these invaders.

230 40 At what point is it acceptable to revolt against authorities? As a Christian, we believe that God has placed all authorities over us -- even the bad ones -- and told us that we must submit to them. But is there ever a place to turn on that authority because it is too evil?

So that is, in a sense, a rebellion against authorities, by refusing to obey. But can we take that further and remove them from power? Is it worth killing over, such as the founding fathers engaged in?
--------
Scripture actually says "yes" at points. via Moses, the Judges, Jehu, Josiah, the Maccabees, Jesus himself, and the Apostles in some places. Lawful authority does not promote itself as desiring to take the place of the LORD in our lives. Lawful authority is respectful of the Natural Law handed down to us by the LORD. That sort of authority is tyrannical and oppressive as a matter of course, and is to be resisted. Those who do so are righteous in the struggle. However, our current adversary equates legal resistance and lawful opposition to be hateful and divisive acts. They want to quash all dissent and opposition. If we don't stand up for the right, we will find our Babylonian exile. So we fight.

I disagree to this extent: Principles are what are the foundation for preferences. You make a preference based on your worldview and ideals, and that preference adjusts to the setting and events, rather than being an ever-shifting set of ideals that adapts to everything constantly.

The principles are bedrock. The preferences are built upon that.

Yup. The Antifederalists were quite a bit more on the nose. They opposed the Supreme Court and the federalists dismissed it as the "smallest branch".

However, Jay made a statement in the Federalists that should not be ignored. IF the SC should become this super-legislature that the Antifeds warned about, it would prove that the Court does not need to be.

It invalidates the entire purpose of the Court. However, it ignores that once the Court is corrupted into powerful offices, they have power to prevent an overrun on their seat of power.

They fear chaos, and crave order. Not freedom - order. That's really just about all you have to understand about them. They've always got a long explanation - sometimes paragraphs - about how everything is aligned such that the perfect action is precisely no action at all. It's all just because they want everything to stay ordered. They'll accept tyranny - but not the slightest bit of chaos.

282 Personally, this "principles" question no longer interests me, at least not at the present. Our constitutional rights are not being upheld, we have an illegitimate government in Washington, and it has pledged itself to crushing out our liberties in all other areas. Any moral obligations we once had towards it, and those who enforce its will, do not apply anymore.

How to effectively restore that constitutional liberty is the only question worth asking.

This is where I disagree wholeheartedly BT. This is a life and death struggle. Hope in discourse and the political process is foolhardy and will only leave us in a deeper grave. I will eschew the label conservative, and just say our side. We have operated from a foundation of moral values. The enemy has no moral foundation whatsoever. They operate on strategy and a position of convenience. They implement their strategy with action. We respond in reaction. From the perspective of self defense this can be a decided disadvantage. It is time to suspend any consideration of the morality of our actions. We must wrest the active position from our enemy and put them on their heels. IMO, this will require doing things which a normal reasoned person will find reprehensible.

Rush, MHRIP, always pronounced for the battle of ideas. If you cannot fortify your ideas, and resort to what the left does, will lose in the end.
-----
Playing dirty isn't cheating, especially if playing dirty has been declared the new normal. Playing dirty means tossing aside the rulebook to win. Rush was for the battle of ideas, yes, but he also and frequently demanded that the Right, being in the right, should actually stand up for those principles and DO something about perpetuating them! The GOPe shirked their duty when there was time to do it peacefully, above board. The rest of us have been left with little to no peaceful recourse. If cheating, sabotage, and otherwise playing by Lewinsky Rules saves the Republic, then let it be so! Anything less brings on the time of the gun and the torch, when the talk of cheating and principled conduct will be silenced.

308 Continued from 226

PART V

Donald Trump cheats on his wives. He does this because he's rich and horny and doesn't GAF. I would prefer that adultery were a disqualification for the Presidency. But we had this debate at least twice in the 1990's (1992 with Gennifer Flowers and 1998 with Monica) and "Adultery is Disqualifying" lost the argument both times. *I* lost the argument both times. The Democrats excused Bill Clinton. Those are the rules now: "New Rules," as we say.

There are criticisms of Trump that will land with me, but "he cheats on his wife" doesn't. Not ever. I never entertained the argument for a second. The Democrats had their chance to keep womanizers out of the Oval Office and they declined.

If the Democrats want to fix this, well, they'll need to do something concrete. They'll need to disqualify one of their own presidential candidates - someone strong, not a forgettable Martin O'Malley type - for adultery. Once they establish that they're willing to co-operate, then we can talk about disqualifying Republicans for adultery.

PART VI (the last, I hope) coming up...

Posted by: Masturbatin' Pete at February 19, 2021 02:44 PM (+1A9H)

309 We're where we're at by trying to be "fair". Equal was twisted into meaning "Equal outcome".

From that was derived all that followed as each victim group was acknowledged as having been dealt with unfairly.

By doing so the dominant civilization was torn down with nothing put in it's place. And now they want to destroy an entire race of people who built most of that civilization. Or at least envisioned it and spent all there money and power to achieve it.

None of those clamoring for equality or fairness ever gave it to their enemies. That's even if they achieved it in the first place. America is a unique occurrence in world history and as a result those who built it must be destroyed or all others will feel and be the lesser as they were not the ones to achieve this.

If it weren't so tragic it would amusing. I wish that those on the left who cry out for hate against white people would take a close look into the mirror cause they're next.

318 The notion of Incorporation - that the Federal Government would guarantee individual rights in a Republic

Incorporation didn't happen because of some generic notion about the Bill of Rights. It happened because (a) we passed a specific constitutional amendment, the 14th, extending Constitutional protection, including the Bill of Rights, to the States; and (b) the Supreme Court refused to acknowledge the plain meaning of the first part of the 14th amendment, and so had to walk it back over the decades piecemeal.

Don't like it, repeal the 14th. It's not a notion, it's a specific amendment.

342 Playing dirty isn't cheating, especially if playing dirty has been declared the new normal.

This notion of rules is only a thing when your enemy recognizes there are rules. A rule stops being a thing when it handcuffs one side in a way they cannot win.

Winter Palace, 1905. There was a time-honored Russian tradition of petitioning the Tsar for redress of grievances. The Tsar wasn't even there, but a large crowd gathered. The Palace Guard overreacted and killed thousands of them. It was the outcome that the revolutionaries were hoping for.

349 Justice being taken away, then, what are kingdoms but great robberies? For what are robberies themselves, but little kingdoms? The band itself is made up of men; it is ruled by the authority of a prince, it is knit together by the pact of the confederacy; the booty is divided by the law agreed on. If, by the admittance of abandoned men, this evil increases to such a degree that it holds places, fixes abodes, takes possession of cities, and subdues peoples, it assumes the more plainly the name of a kingdom, because the reality is now manifestly conferred on it, not by the removal of covetousness, but by the addition of impunity. Indeed, that was an apt and true reply which was given to Alexander the Great by a pirate who had been seized. For when that king had asked the man what he meant by keeping hostile possession of the sea, he answered with bold pride, 'What thou meanest by seizing the whole earth; but because I do it with a petty ship, I am called a robber, whilst thou who dost it with a great fleet art styled emperor'.

350 Incorporation didn't happen because of some generic notion about the Bill of Rights.

The list of betrayals is long and wide, Bill Barr, Jeff Sessions, Rosenstein to Mitch, Mitt and Nikki, and to the state GOP legislatures who allowed their governors to dictate rules by executive fiat while they cowered or profited.

406 There were no "Dark Ages." During the time when political structure fell apart, the Church developed such things as the university, the scientific method, and astronomy. Nothing but anti-Catholic bigotry.

PART VI

So really, "are we being consistent?" is the wrong question here. There are two questions that matter: (1) Is this something that we are morally obligated to do (or not do)? In other words, is this a "killing Bin Laden's grandchildren" scenario? And if it's not, then... (2) Has the Left earned our consistency on this issue? If they have not, then there's no virtue in having our consistency used as a weapon.

That is doing what one has the power to do and one wills. The only thing that restrains the self-will, self-motivation of freedom/liberty is *principle*.

This is what creates the refined value of the "blessing of liberty". This is not so much founded as a *free* country, but as a *principled* country, largely on the principles of Locke, who was pragmatically working through the principles of Christianity (IMO).

And I really don't care what bucket you put me in.

Actually, it's that the sophists in robes elevated Jefferson's opinion about the "wall of separation" to a Constitutional principle to restrain religious-minded people and yet totally ignore Jefferson on the principle underlying it the "Rights of Conscience" by which Jefferson explains as one of the main violations of the mixture of Church and State that it is immoral to make a man pay for what wounds his conscience.

The special pleading from Jefferson basically makes it bare that this is about what progressives want and what they don't want.

You're paying for Democrats to win elections several times over with your tax dollars, but that's nothing to the government with the Democrat symbiote entwined around every nerve.

He specifies "without justice". In form and function they are literally similar structures and frequently of similar origin. The provision of justice is what defines legitimacy(though yes, many states fail this metric and yet it is not sensible to overthrow them).

Having concluded that the state is illegitimate and that it is likewise sensible to do away with it, what reason other than means prevents it?

435 343 the key is they already marched through our institutions, so now Kyle Rittenhouse gets heavy prosecution for not letting the thugs murder him. They have oligarchs protecting their street violence. So "violence" may not be the best strategy on our part. We (the majority) do need to organize ... but maybe other methods will work ... boycotts of Woke Corps? ... idk, maybe it has to get hotter than that, but action is needed, and that might mean forming groups.

As the events of the last year should have made clear, stupid, impulsive actions won't help anything. The Left controls the system, and those who stick their necks out individually will be crushed. Trying to emulate the Left's street-level tactics when you have no institutional power is a recipe for disaster. The Right has managed to dig itself into a hole so deep that there's no easy way to climb out of it. It's going to take long decades of disciplined, thankless work.

It's also clear, though, that while the system has a lot of power it has no real authority. They know this, which is why they act so afraid even though they seem to hold all the cards. Exploiting this fatal weakness must start from the ground up.

Remember the exchange between the old German doctor and John Smith (played by Christopher Walken) in The Dead Zone (1983):

JS: "If you could go back and kill Hitler before he came to power, knowing what he ended up doing, would you?"

447 Starting to see the pattern with principles uber alles conservatives. Notice how many on Twitter constantly try to hold proglodytes to their own supposed principles and it never seems to quite stick? Yeah...as zombie once pointed out, it's a fool's errand to do so because the left only has 2: whatever 1) gets them their dopamine hit (usually power) and 2) avoids badfeelz. They are more than aware of their hypocrisy; they simply don't care.

But the principled Right *does*. Hypocrisy seems to be the unforgivable sin, where even just the appearance of it is enough to make them back down from any argument. But hypocrisy is a concept only adults understand, which is where the principled Right goes wrong: assumes they're dealing with adults.

Cancelling the left isn't so much as a way to teach them cancel culture is wrong as it is the kind of punishment you'd give a toddler. Just as you wouldn't bother explaining punishment to a toddler, you likewise shouldn't waste time doing so with proglodytes. Turning their own infantile psychology on them (2nd rule about avoiding badfeelz) is the only way to get them to stop acting on their totalitarian impulses.
