Here's an update to a story Ace posted Tuesday:Amazing Story This is just an amazing story. It's the story of Bela Paskin, a Hungarian Jew during WWII. He was imprisoned by the Germans and put in a labor battalion. Later on he was captured by the Russians and spent the war burying dead soldiers. Returning to his home after the war, he found that his entire family had been swept into Auschwitz by the Nazis. Heartbroken, he wandered across war-torn Europe until he reached Paris, and eventually he immigrated to the US to start a new life, utterly alone without any kin left. Or was he? Getting Shafted Here, two drunk guys in China are trying to stagger back from a night of prodigious drinking. Stumbling across the lobby, one of them, half carrying his friend, reaches out to press the elevator button. What happens next will astound you! Musical Interlude, Featuring Jackson Browne I don't think Jackson Browne gets enough credit for making great music. As someone who entered his teens with the 80s, Fast Times at Ridgemont High has always been my seminal coming-of-age movie. Because of their placement in the movie, Somebody's Baby by Browne (and Moving in Stereo from The Cars) are instant aural connections to memories of my first, awkward sexual experiences. (And yes, you can have that as a pun back there if you want it) When either of them comes on the radio, the years melt away. However, as I got older, this is the Jackson Browne song that sometimes resonates: Test Drive First, watch this video: — ONT WTF (@OntWtf) February 12, 2021 Feel Good Story No charge for 91-year-old's boiler 'under any circumstances' James is originally from Liverpool, where he was a bin man before he became a plumber in 1998. I've spent some time thinking about the events that had to occur before a certain event happened to me. Mostly I picked events of mine that were significant in some way but others more mundane also had some odd coincidences to have come about.
I understand why our ancestors thought about there being a God or that fate takes a hand in our lives. Some of the things that happened to me and what preceded them are truly odds defying circumstances. Things that if you read it in a book you'd laugh at how childish and unreal such a thing could happen. Posted by: jakee308.com at February 11, 2021 09:57 PM (1P4tP) 14

I can see figuring out ways to acquire certain rocker's works without paying them..(the world is filled with used CDs at substantial savings)...but I think one of the bad turning points in society was when people started listening to musicians opinions on things beside music. I'm firmly in the Jackson Browne lines up against the wall contingent. Sure, I can admit to the quality of some of his music. But I also witnessed first hand his effect on '70s classmates and '80s friends, as they'd swallow his B.S. wholesale, and become glaze-eyed nonukniks.

Many brand new cars can be so quiet you may not realize the motor is running. I think that this is what happened to the young lady. The rest about pinning her accelerator foot is the rest of it.
This is why training and experience is so important. The brain only needs to think what needs to be done and the body does it. Without the training the brain has to quickly determine what steps need to take place when and how. And this can cause one to freeze up till that is resolved one way or another. Jackson Browne... recorded Running on Empty and The Load Out/Stay at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland in 1977.
I had season tickets to that venue for 3 years in the mid 80's. I cannot begin to say how many major acts I saw, but the sound was really awesome. 13th row, center section, seats 13 and 14. I don't get in moods often, I'm a pretty happy person
------- Ha! The SMR is different. Opposite of this, in fact. "Moods/Rages/Black Depressions" are the norm. When things are bad, we drink to amplify the rages to maximum power. When things are good, we drink even more, to amplify the contentedness to maximum relaxation, and to black out these unfortunate periods of weakness. That keeps the edge sharp for the next rage-cycle. We made all kinds of music to keep up with this cadence, but none of it is featured in '80s movies. I was welding patch panels into the front floor of the '60 Lark, and sparks from the welder flew up and ignited some of the cotton stuffing in the front seat. Didn't notice for a while, because of welding helmet. But eventually I smelled a new kind of smoke. I ran and got a spray bottle of glass cleaner, and peered under the seat, and sprayed on some little flames, and glowing embers. Knocked it back a bit, which gave me time to run and fetch the garden hose, hook it up, and turn it on. I gave the underside of the seat a good hosing, but I knew the fire was not yet out. Costner is mostly associated with Waterworld, a post-apocalyptic disaster movie (in two ways). So with little knowledge of what Costner means to you, I would go with post-apocalyptic - but in a way your mind can tolerate - as the theme of the dream.
In many ways this place does feel like it is adrift in the middle of the apocalypse. Posted by: ... at February 11, 2021 10:47 PM (jBRLB) 198

CBD's comment on Jackson reminds me, there's a classic story about how often Harry Truman used to say "damn."
Finally at some social function, a woman came up to his wife, first lady Bess, and asked her, "couldn't you please get the president to stop saying 'damn' so often?" Bess replied, "you wanna know how long it took me to get him DOWN to just 'damn'?" Posted by: qdpsteve at February 11, 2021 10:49 PM (L2ZTs) 203

Been reading "The Gulag Archipalog" I've read plenty of Soviet commie history but never got to this. It is still horrifying to read about the large industrial scale evil. Also disturbing is when Solzhenitsyn talks about the mass fear and delusion and ignorance of the past that had take over the country and feeling completely disoriented because it is starting to feel that way here. I read a few news stories after dinner today and every one was a pack of lies about Trump, corona racism etc... We are inundated with a flood of BS every single day from multiple sources. The average LIV today is just as brainwashed as the Soviet citizen was.

...so I got the seat out, easily, because it had been out a few weeks ago, and I had put anti-seize on all 8 screws. Flopped it over on its back, and smoke was curling out of numerous places. Hosed it down real good, all the smoke stopped. No sign of any smoke for over an hour. Darkness was falling, so I put the car in the garage, cleaned up tools and scrap metal, and last of all, brought the seat into the front room of the house. Next thing I know, I am smelling smoke, and I see curls of smoke rising from the damned seat again. Wrestle it outside, hook up the hose again, and soak it down again. Took the trim panel off the rear of the seat back, saw smoke curling from cotton on the bottom edge of the seat back, and hosed it down until the entire seat was soggy. I'm going to leave the seat outside on the gravel drive overnight, and will check on it periodically until I go to bed. Had to set up a box fan, and air the house out, too. It was like being inside Tom Waits' lungs.

I live in a gable front and wing built in 1860, typical farmhouse for around here. But they built it like they built barns. The property was logged off and a steam saw mill produced planks, about an inch thick. The field stone foundation is held together with lime mixed with milk. There are no studs. Planks were nailed to log frames, one layer vertical, one horizontal and in some areas of the house a layer at 45 degrees. Metal roof

Most of the artists on it were *not* who the kids (like me) were listening to in 1982. 273 Re Jackson Browne, I still remember when the Fast Times At Ridgemont High soundtrack came out.
Most of the artists on it were *not* who the kids (like me) were listening to in 1982. We were, as far as I could tell at least, all into new wave, and the soundtrack was full of country-rock and classic rock artists. Jackson Browne himself was considered rather old hat, I believe. ---------- It wasn't a bad soundtrack, and the groups weren't that far back. (At least not for Ohio, anyway.) Looking up the soundtrack here, I have the CD...somewhere... Here's the list. https://tinyurl.com/11g3lr7z Posted by: exdem13 at February 11, 2021 11:15 PM (W+kMI) 308

So for the last 3 days, all the local news around Seattle has been "WINTER STORM!! SNOWMAGEDDON!" And the temperature dropped earlier today, and the clouds were a dark, foreboding gray. Went to the store to get a few things (can't cook without cooking oil, propane tank refilled), in preparation. It got dark and the drapes were closed, also it helps with insulation. Then I read a post from nurse, walking on the beach in the snow. Cool! The first snow in 2 years is here! And then I look out the window, and not a flake. 20 miles south of nurse, only a few blocks from Puget Sound, and.......nothing. This is the story of Puget Sound snow warnings. Often, just a tease. Jackson Browne has some truly wonderful songs and I loved him in my youth. Fast forward and I got a job and had kids and wasn't a rabid liberal anymore. But I still really love his songs. He didn't interject politics to the degree of the drunk from NJ.
Several years ago I went to see him in SD and was excited to hear him. It was lackluster. He sang and looked like he's clinically depressed. And on top of it, he stopped after a song and said oh wait. And started to blow his nose while facing the audience. Yep. Just blew his nose and then went on. Totally unprofessional and bland despite his great lyrics. We left at intermission. And then my husband told me I owed him for doing that to him. Jim, that's actually a really good question. You limit it to Senator, so some good US Reps or Gubnors get passed over. I will say that my opinion is clouded by how they have treaded President Trump before and after the election, and in the last few weeks. I really think this is the most important factor today, not any specific issue. Because being pro-Trump means a lot of things, which I lump into "a traditional and Constitutional America". Cruz is your Texas guy, and watching him from afar, I get frustrated with him. He is all over the board. Since he is yours, I would defer my final judgement. He is inconsistent, talking Constitutional details and precedent, and then dunking on DJT, but at least he acts like an American, unlike most Dem Senators these days. Josh Hawley has impressed the hell out of me, and continues to do so. He would be quite welcome at the TxMoMe, no doubt. And John Kennedy from LA is great. But you asked about the other end of the spectrum, the Blue end. Where there is lots of purple. Probably the two who should "be better" are James Lankford of Oklahoma, and of course Sassy. QDPS he just did all of his downer songs. The ones I loved as an angst ridden teen but he delivered them as a depressed person. He didn't engage the audience at all. Ignored and didn't acknowledge he was at a concert. Might have been in a recording studio. The nose blowing was the icing on the cake.
But...I still love his songs. My favorite memory is swimming in the BVI outside of a beach bar and they were blasting his For Everyman album as I floated in the bay and it was like a dream. Posted by: keena at February 12, 2021 01:11 AM (RiTnx) 525

I've heard Bob Dylan is the same way. He doesn't make any small talk with the audience, and as of recently doesn't even try to sing very well. He just belts through the performance and wanders off. Then there's Van Morrison, who supposedly is still good at performing, but doesn't interact with the audience (he supposedly suffers from stage fright) and will only play for *exactly* 60 minutes. Lankford started out sounding great, but in the last couple of years, turned on Trump, for some unknown reason. Maybe a pile of bacon and some bourbon, with some conversation milling around with Morons could straighten him out.
Ben Sasse is another thing altogether. On the surface he seems conservative, but holey moley, has that guy turned into a honorary member of the Lincoln Project. I wonder why he is so popular in Nebraska. And then someone told me "gasahol" and I just nodded. This guy could be invited, fed a few drinks and some barbequed wild hog, and then taken out into the horse barn and have a Moron-group talking to. After we're done talking to him, someone needs to tell him how to get to the porta-potties to clean up and change his shorts. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at February 12, 2021 01:16 AM (sy5kK) 535

The GOP has got away with masquerading as the Right for so long, I don't see why we don't start playing the same game right now.
We should be organizing all kinds of lefty groups, setting up protests, starting campaigns, and hounding these big companies on social media until they comply. For example let's make *EVERY* NFL team change its name for the sake of wokeness. Why should it only be the one? To me this strategy is win/win/win. 1. Corporations have to keep paying out to satisfy the unsatisfiable, at higher and higher rates 2. Regular low-fo people might start REALLY getting sick of watching the Left's PC rules degrade everything they know and love before their eyes. 3. We get to have fun watching all the assholes scramble and cough up profits on rebranding etc, on OUR terms. Posted by: ... at February 12, 2021 01:24 AM (uEbPt) 549

"For Everyman" features David Lindley on guitars (including lap steel), doing his usual terrific work, and Sneaky Pete Kleinow's transcendant pedal steel playing as well. Sneaky Pete's playing on "Take it Easy... Lady of the Well" is gorgeous, and is one of the reasons I took up pedal steel when my left hand went south after nearly 50 years of guitar playing..."If I can't play six-string any more, I want to play that."

That's one more ring than the number of quarterbacks that were taken in the 2000 NFL Draft before he was picked at number 199. He is the ultimate team player and leader who can just walk into a shitty team's locker room and say: "We're going to the Superb Owl this year." And everyone in the room will believe him. The house style poster is kind of interesting. Vast swathes of Des Moines (and suburbs) are filled with 3 basic house templates: a split level (which isn't on the poster), the "Built in Garage" style. No window above the garage, and the ground floor window is usually one that arches out from the home, and a "stretch" version of the built in garage, with either extra 2nd floor space above the garage, or space between the front door and garage. You just drive down residential street after street, and those three house alternate for miles.
Probably makes sense...they're good layouts, common parts keep prices down, and they offer a variation in size to allow an appropriate price range for a neighborhood. Posted by: Iowa Dude at February 12, 2021 06:14 AM (IJoA0) 702

This is ... common sense! How long will it last? The article states: evaluating a new version of its gender-neutral Army Combat Fitness Test, one that would likely create "gender-specific" evaluation categories for men and women when it comes time for promotion. The move would back away from the Army's original plan to have the new six-event test be gender-neutral in all aspects. It's in recognition of data showing that physiological differences between men and women cause individual scores to differ by 100 points on average by gender, according to an Army official familiar with the effort.
