Governor Cuomo's top aide privately apologized to Democratic lawmakers for withholding the state's nursing-home death toll from COVID-19 -- telling them "we froze" out of fear the true numbers would "be used against us" by federal prosecutors, The Post has learned.

The stunning admission of a cover-up was made by Secretary to the Governor Melissa DeRosa during a video conference call with state Democratic leaders in which she said the Cuomo administration had rebuffed a legislative request for the tally in August because "right around the same time, [then-President Donald Trump] turns this into a giant political football," according to an audio recording of the two-hour-plus meeting. "He starts tweeting that we killed everyone in nursing homes," DeRosa said. "He starts going after [New Jersey Gov. Phil] Murphy, starts going after [California Gov. Gavin] Newsom, starts going after [Michigan Gov.] Gretchen Whitmer."
In addition to attacking Cuomo's fellow Democratic governors, DeRosa said, Trump "directs the Department of Justice to do an investigation into us." "And basically, we froze," she told the lawmakers on the call. "Because then we were in a position where we weren't sure if what we were going to give to the Department of Justice, or what we give to you guys, what we start saying, was going to be used against us while we weren't sure if there was going to be an investigation." DeRosa added: "That played a very large role into this."

A government official, fearing investigation for his malfeasance, ordered the state government to refuse requests for information, thus violating state freedom of information laws in addition to the prior activity.
A criminal conspiracy that cut-and-dried should result in people burning down the state house. And if a Republican governor had done this, that would be the outcome - with the press loudly and merrily fanning the flames. But because it's Cuomo, nada.

To be honest, I haven't really considered the possibility he's still alive/in office in '24. I guess they might decide having a braindead nincompoop in there is good as anything.
Incidentally, I know a lot of people on this here webzine are saying "there ain't gonna be no more elections," but that's highly unlikely. For one thing, the reason we had that fraud this time was almost entirely to get rid of Trump, and whether people want to hear it or not, the number of typical Republican voters who are going to abandon the Party are probably a LOT smaller than we think.

I'm not. I cut him ZERO slack on this. I cut a lot of people slack on other policies adopted in the early days, because no one knew exactly what we were up against.

My brother's wife got Covid. She had bad body aches and difficulty breathing. Then their son lost all sense of taste and smell. They got him Covid tested. The test was negative. A week later they got him tested again. The test was positive.

That was never the plan for it, nor the Javitz center, nor any of the field hospitals erected across the country. This was perfectly ass-backwards. Those facilities were provided to handle non-'Rona overflow if the the Wuhan virus patients overran existing hospitals.
This is completely opposed to what should have happened, which is those temporary facilities being used for COVID *only,* or what is often called the "sanitarium model." Egypt uses this medieval approach - isolating all contagion patients together - to great effect. Our strategy for temporary facilities was never correct anywhere they were erected.

Think that is it -- it both saved money in the long run (get rid of expensive seniors) AND provided a high covid death toll with which to attack Trump. Vuomo sure did attack and blame Trump daily, eh?
In January 2020 Cuomo had announced he would be moving to provide free healthcare to illegal immigrants. The state couldn't even afford to cover seniors at that point. And then along came covid, which could provide an easy fix to that problem. . .

I think the theory was that the old people were going to die anyway, but if we keep the numbers down in the hospitals, we can better treat those who might be saved, and we can better protect the first responders.
Since that's something you can't really say out loud (even though it might be a perfectly legitimate strategy), the attempt was to do it quietly.

I think they coordinated a response which was mostly driven by the desire to "protect the medical industry". We saw the same thing in the UK with the entire country prostrating itself to the NHS.
The hospitals felt that it would be easier if those "patients" went somewhere else to die. This would put less stress on them, and give them more time for tiktok choreography.

At least that was my perceived rationale. They say it's an emergency, but their such auto-pilot Egalitarians that they can't adjust to the supposed emergency condition they otherwise demand be an exception.

You have to wonder if it was a money-saving strategy, since many nursing home residents receive state subsidies, or was it because elderly people tend to vote Republican?
My guess is some "expert" advised them that Covid was going to explode, hospitals in NY would look as bad as NHS hospitals (but it's free), and even the wealthy wouldn't be able to buy a bed. They then somberly advised that Covid patients would need to be shunted off to nursing homes.
Then, when the Mad Max scenario didn't materialize, they went into damage control mode.

And apparently that includes anyone working for a Democrat because all those employees in the nursing home, in the Health dept. and others all knew this to be true. Again, who benefits? Most of these bad policy decisions were driven by desire to protect special interest groups - let out prisoners to reduce workload for guards and their unions. Close schools for the teachers. Ban sick people from hospitals to protect medical industry.

I just did that with my mother. The last time I got to see her in person and conscious was when I drove her to the hospital. For nearly a year, I've been forced to talk to her through a fucking window, with a mask on (save for the times they'd sneak me in). They finally let me see her in person to say goodbye, but she was too fucked up on morphine to even know what was going on. There's a circle in hell waiting for these freaks. It turns out Covid is really only unusually deadly for the elderly, so the nursing home strategy was, in fact, THE EXACT OPPOSITE of what we should have done. Depending on who you believe - Trump had no choice. He could only appoint whomever the GOP allowed him to appoint. He could not simply fire everyone. His hands were completely tied. Nobody listened to him. Nobody would follow his commands.
Yet - if all that was true - he chose to simply occupy the chair for four years, rather than disclose everything and watch it all burn. Why did he choose that ? The man loved to talk - he could have spilled the beans at any one of his rallies. And the crowd would have ate it up.

I'm not willing to cut any politicians any slack on this. We've had plenty of flu epidemics in the past and we've never, ever handled them in this way before. We've never before forced shutdowns or made healthy people quarantine themselves or politicized treatments for it. And now, we're coming up on a whole year of "three weeks to flatten the curve" of infections.
This whole debacle is a progressive fuckup the likes of which I didn't think possible because it wasn't until the populace became so dumbed-down that logical thought became virtually impossible. It's being done on purpose and there is no effective pushback against it. WTFF is going on with us that we allow this to happen so easily?

Look, Trump showed that contempt for the press was a good and righteous thing. The base that would vote for a MAGA candidate doesn't give two shits what the press says or thinks, we know better. The people who still believe the press are the ones you will never reach.

Yeah they are entertaining, and if I was asked on a show to talk about Trump complaining of fraud I'd use that as my tack: yes, I think its shocking and wrong to claim a conspiracy stole your election through fraud, and go on like that until the interviewer -- agreeing with me and promoting my position -- realized I'd been talking about Hillary the whole time.
But the truth is, hypocrisy has no meaning to the left. They not only are completely fine with holding two contradictory positions at the same time, with lying about what they believe... but they also think that getting rid of Trump was like defeating Hitler, so any price is worth it, no matter what.

Lets talk in the specific. Take the FBI. The FBI has been proven to be rogue, from top to bottom. We'd be better off without it at all, than with it in its current form.
Yet Trump protected them for four years, via inaction, while they actively worked against him. What motivates a man to make that decision ? Could he not see it ? Did his age and upbringing simply not allow him to view the FBI as an existential threat ? Why people do the things they do is interesting to me. How people can look at the exact same thing - and view it completely differently. I could talk about it all day.

As unpredictable as Trump appears, he does seem to have a code and a love of country guiding his actions. There is also the possibility of outside threats to his family etc if certain lines are crossed. It sounds like excuse making on my part but those things alone can shape an answer to your question.
I will say that I agree with you that Trump wasn't ruthless enough. But again I look back to what I said above.

Wrong - at the time, Cuomo was told by the nursing homes what would happen, and he had a Navy hospital ship and a tent city in the part ready and waiting for patients. He bullied and threatened the homes anyway to deny Trump a victory by having the resources he collected used.
Also at the time, the PA guy pulled out his mom from the homes before implementing the kill order. So he knew the score at the time, too.
