Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Kick back and escape the world of current events and politics.

Today's above the fold cartoon was submitted by a couple of Morons. Of course I forgot to make a note of them. Sorry about that contributors.

Hey Mis Him, not really a pet but this badger was by my house last year and my ranch guy actually caught him in a cage and moved him to the back of the ranch in the back of a truck. I have no idea how he did it. I told him it was a badger and dangerous. I think he felt sorry for it. - CaliGirl.

Quite the neighbor you have there CaliGirl. I've seen badgers in the wild but never as close as this guy. Your ranch guy was one brave guy at the time. Thanks for the peek at the badger.

Thanks for including us on the Pet Thread.

Chief is as much a pet as a working dog but he loves to hunt. When he was younger (he's now approaching 15) we competed in field trials and hunt tests as well as hunting quail, dove, snipe, pheasant and ducks. perhaps the best thing I gained from the relationship are friends, mornings in duck blinds and a wall full of ribbons.

Another thing he gave me is a pup from his last litter. Finn is an outstanding field dog and has literally retrieved 2,200 + birds. Finn is a study in dedication and is single minded in his pursuit of birds.

You will find pictures of Finn attached.

Regards, Mike M

Now that I've posted Finn's photo and story I expect my payment. So let me know when and where we are going bird hunting. What a great story about a working sporting dog. Thanks for sharing.

Hi MH,
Jimbro from the Hostages again. Sobek did that drawing of Ollie which was awful nice of him to do. I’ve sent you pictures of my two other ACD’s in the past, Rowan and Lola. When our ACD Star passed in December, 2019 we waited a bit before putting a deposit on a puppy. By the time he was born in November we weren’t sure we were ready for a third. That’s when we heard that the breeders were calling it quits after his litter. Ollie is our older dog Rowan’s half-brother (same sire). With that info in mind we knew that it was a go. The big dogs are letting him into the pack begrudgingly. He is a spirited pup who agitates above his weight class and has had reminders of who the alpha is from his brother on many occasions. He’s still learning the ropes around here but he has great potential! I’ll send some more pictures of the pack when he’s done growing. Thanks, Jim

First of all, no thanks necessary Jim. Folks, Jim submitted a ton of Ollie photos. Tough to choose. He's an adorable puppy with a bright future in front of him. Also Sobek is one hell of an artist. I'm so impressed. Thanks for sharing.

Long time lurker. This is our schnoodle (schnauzer poodle) Buggs. We got him from the humane society when he was 7years old and he is 16 now, deaf and blind but still spoiled rotten. When I do post my name is MammaB

Well, if anyone adopts a pet at age 7 from a shelter we expect no less than spoiling the critter like no tomorrow. Buggs is a handsome guy. Thanks for coming in out of the shadows today.

It's been a few years since my little grandpup was featured on the pet thread. Many days he gives me comfort and I can't imagine my life without him. Moose was a svelte 10 pounds when my daughter came to live with us and brought him into our lives back in 2015. He was barely 2 years old then. He turned 7 last November and the little dude has packed on a few pounds, now weighing in at 16 pounds. He's had a few hip problems but overall still pretty healthy. Took this picture of him this past Sunday. Look at that face! If that doesn't melt your heart, nothing will.

Thanks MisHum.. hope to see my little Moose on the pet thread. Daughter will be thrilled. Jewells

Are you sure it's your grandpup? Sounds like Moose is your puppeh ) Great close up shot of him. Cute pup. And we can really tell he is loved. Thanks for sharing today.

Hi ! This is our cat Aspen, he is 6 months old and is very vocal. He is a flame point siamese. All he wants to do is play and tear around the house a million miles an hour. Also a favorite of his is attacking any moving body part when you go to bed. We love him. -Hatari somewhere on Ventura Highway.

I don't think I've ever heard a pet named "Aspen". That is different and quite cool. Surprised you were able to get a photo of him still. We appreciate your contribution and good luck with your new addition.

Wanted to get this out while we are still in winter.

The cat leading the wife on a snowy hike is Angus and had showed up sitting under a tree in the yard that summer. He sat and watched for a few weeks and scared us a bit as when you would take some food out he would come running and kind of bat your feet while screeching quite loudly to push you to where we fed him. A few weeks later after he came close enough for a pat on the head he jumped in my lap and stayed there. His happiest place is to be spawled on a lap and he will stay for hours till your legs get numb

This one is my cat. He is attached to my chest pushing the Kindle out of the way every bedtime. High chest, right up with his head at your chin staring you in the face is the way he demands. He absolutely has to reach out and touch my face a few times with gently placed claws that still hurt before he can get a good night's sleep. Don't get me wrong he loves my wife dearly and gets all cooey with her but I think I have some odor or something that draws him back.

One of the best and most affectionate cats we have ever had, the affection is tempered with a bit of grumpiness and orneriness that I think shows in his eyes. He is very loving yet serious, meek, aggressive and silly all at the same time. A good rough and tumble is his favorite morning routine.

The hike was really guided by him, he will walk when outdoors and lead the way where he wants to go. It was a short trip down back of the house and across the stream and back but the good bit of snow didn't slow him a bit and you can see the determination in his eyes. - Donald

Quite the story about Angus. Stunning cat and sounds like he has part doggeh in him as well. Enjoy winter! Thanks for contributing his story.

Seeing the chickens in this past week’s Pet Thread, I decided to share my “Why you do not hire Persian cats as guard animals” picture.

The chickens belong to the neighbor three doors north of us. Omaha allows people to have six chickens properly confined. And no roosters. You can see how well the law in enforced.

The cat is KatyDid, the Himalayan I inherited. (She’s been featured on the Pet Thread before.)That’s about as close to the chickens as she would go. But she did love watching them and anything else that wandered into the yard.

Captain Josepha Sabin

Fried chicken for Cpt. and giblets for KatyDid? So you're saying that Persian cats don't make great guard animals? Thanks for the interesting photo and story.

G_inger11FEB21.jpg

G'morning, MisHum.

I finally got a picture of my new kitten. Here she is hiding under my
big oak rocker. She's some sort of high-bred Persian but was found
stray at our local store. I inherited her not long after her mom died
unexpectedly at Thanksgiving. She's a bit wary of me because I've been
combing and cutting knots out of her for weeks. We're almost
there...one haunch to go. I resisted taking her for almost a month
while she bunked in with neighbors. As you can see from her nose, I'm
probably looking at some horrendous vet bills down the line. It's even
hard for her to eat, with that facial structure. But she's absolutely
adorable (WE don't think so! signed, Other Cats) and amazingly forgiving
considering what I've done to her. Her name is Ginger and her mom's
name was Christine. Thank you, Christine. I miss you. - Creeper

Oh the joys of long haired critters. Nothing like grooming, combing, brushing and cutting. Looks like an adorable little kitteh who we all know will be spoiled beyond spoiled. Congrats on your new addition.

Little just turned 16, so I was pretty stoked to go pick her out a new ride.

She was staying at her mom's, so I sent her a text in the morning with a typo that said "Happy Birthday! Ready to go cat shopping?" instead of "car shopping". The curse of fat thumbs.

She replied "Yes, can we go to the shelter after school Monday."

I was a bit confused at the reply, so I looked at the text I had sent and then corrected it.

To my amazement, she said she'd rather have a new cat than a car. And so there you go, now I have a new mouth to feed for another 15-20 years.

She named her Froggy.

I woke up Snickers the corgi to break the bad news of a new cat, but apparently she hadn't had enough coffee yet to process the information. - Bitter Clinger

Hmmm. A pet or a car? Hard to say which one would be the most expensive over the years. But if Froggy gets treated as well as Snickers you folks are going to have one super pet for some time. Be careful with those fat fingers. Thanks BC.

My goodness what a wonderful variety of critters today. From badgers to chicken watching cats. Throw in a few K-9s and we have one heck of a Pet Thread. Thank you for your contributions.

1 I mentioned a few days ago, Prince the rescue poodle passed away in his sleep last Sunday morning. In spite of the Cushings disease and age, there was no indication the end was coming. He was fine until just a few hours before he died.

Prince was a bright eyed, tail wagging bundle of playfulness. He loved being around other dogs, all people, and going for car rides. At home he wanted sliced ham (his favorite food) and would push open doors to where I was to get his proper amount of ear skritches and rump pats.

We have been through loss before and know things will get better. But we still look to see where he is, start to reach for his food, even avoid yelling to keep from disturbing him. As best the vet could figure, Prince was about 13 years old when we adopted him, so he was close to 17. The tears are always close for now. But we take some solace in knowing he had an additional three and a half years of life, being loved and loving us in return.

So many of you have offered condolences. Thank you all. They really helped.

24 Pax the assassin porch kitty is trying very hard to become house kitty. The girl spawn is bringing her in for part of the day because "cold outside". Cold was not a problem last winter but evidently this year is special. I will admit that 5 inches of snow and single digit temps were not an issue last winter as they are this week. My itchy, watery eyes and snuffling nose are not thrilled with this development.

25 JTB, my deep sympathies on the passing of Prince.

I had to put down my 17-year-old cat Angus on Wednesday, and it was sudden too. Some of you might remember (or not, heh) that he was on the pet thread last spring--he was the blind feline retriever, tuxedo cat, and the kitten pic I sent showed his one blue eye. I sure have cried a lot in the past few days. But was thrilled to see that today's thread featured both a magnificent tuxedo cat, and a cat named Angus. Love to all the beautiful pets today and their owners.

43 Good to see another fantastic assemblage of Moron animals and their stories from their owners brought to us by our Pet Thread Curator, MisHum.

It is tough to balance the loss of an animal friend and companion of many years against the years of joy they freely bring to us, and I believe we return to them, in a rather mysterious, but wonderful and rewarding, inter-species relationship. Treasure them while you have them!

He may become one of those expensive free critters as I called the clinic his original owners used and they only saw him one time for a lung infection. 77 Because of our age and general health, Prince was probably our last pet. No way could we give a puppy the attention and exercise needed and even another senior dog might need more than we can provide right now. Reality sucks sometimes.

But we were able to use some of his stuff to help (or amuse) others. Our nephew, his wife and 2 year old boy have a 'peagle'. That's a peke and beagle mix. He's about Prince's size, so we sent them a hot dog on a bun costume and a bumble bee costume that will fit. Also, since the boy can't control the dog on a walk, we sent a pet stroller that holds the dog in a mesh compartment and the kid can push that. Our dogs all loved it. We gave some good friends with an aging rottweiler a ramp that will let her walk into their truck. Others got the car seat that keeps the dog from jumping all over the driver while the car is in motion and is high enough to let the pup see out the window during the drive.

Again, thanks for all the kind thoughts.

86 Creeper: Welcome to the Persian cat slave club. Yes, their coats are a pain to maintain. Mine arrived with his coat perfectly combed out. One of these days, I should call his breeder and ask her how she did it. Hershey regards any and all grooming tools as toys. I'm lucky if I can drag something through his coat once much less a complete comb out. KatyDid, my Himalayan, didn't run up breathing problem vet bills. Her snoring rattled the rafters, though. But an upper respiratory did kill her. I was so used to her sneezing, snorting, and snoring, I didn't realize until it was too late that she was sick. But she was nearly sixteen which was pretty good for a cat that was supposed to die of a genetic disorder by the time she was five. I swore many time during her lifetime that I would never, ever get another Persian. I lasted a month.

JTB -- I'm so sorry. The same thing happened to our last dog. We went to bed one night and she was fine. The next morning, she had totally collapsed. Cancer of the everything.

Thanks.

On a pet note, daughter and I parked outside PetCo last night and something caught my eye in the Suburban that pulled up next to us. I rolled the window down and said to the gentleman that got out "Do you think you have enough dog in that vehicle?"
He laughed and said "Yes it think so!" and rolled the rear window down further to reveal a full grown Newfie and partially grown Newfie pup. Between them, the two heads could barely fit through the window. He said the full grown pup was right at 175 lbs. Suddenly I understood why he was at PetCo. They were very well behaved dogs, and obviously well loved.
Made me glad I had taken the opportunity to chat with them.

We had a cat who we rescued from being an outside kitty who felt the need to go out and patrol a couple of times a night. We joked that he was the Weather Cat: if the cat is dry, it's clear; if the cat is wet, it's raining; if the cat is white, it's snowing...

142 One thing that helps with clipping a dog's nails is if you massage or play around with their feet every chance you get. If you're watching TV and your dog is next to you on the couch, hold their feet, tug at them gently, etc. Dogs normally don't like having their feet messed with, so if you can get them used to it, the better off you are come nail trim time. (This works best if you start when they're still a pup. Older dogs - well, you take your chances.)

219 Cats and snow: When I first took Marie-Antoinette the smart black cat out for a walk, there was still a little snow on either side of the walkway. She trotted over, tried to walk on it, drew back, and stayed on the walk after that.

In '89 it snowed 3 days before Xmas. I let my big red Maine Coon mix, Arizona, out into the little fenced patio, saying "You have to experience your ancestral homeland." He paced around, turning his big square muzzle up to the snow, very curious, and his paw tufts kept his feet from feeling it, I guess. I got cold before he did and brought us both back inside.

My Siberian needs it. He's got knots in his fur (and, I say, in his head), and he dislikes being combed. He'll put up with brushing -- but that won't get the knots out.

MegaRoy used to hate getting brushed. Now he lurves it. He will chivy us and harrass us to follow him uostairs to his cat bed by the window for brushing until he purss himself to sleep.

What ACD/Labrador/StandardPoodle cross? At one point are they just mutts again?

I remember when I got Ajax, the lady at the place said that a family with a son who desperately wanted a dog- but he had horrible allergies. They had given her a shirt to rub on the dog, and then exposed him (the kid) to the shirt to see if he would have a reaction, the Kid was fine, so they wanted to get the female of the litter.

Every boy NEEDS a dog.

I adopted a beagle mix from Kansas.
When this sweet girl came to Colorado, she absolutely couldn't deal with the weather here in the mountains. She limped a lot in the cold.
She's been here for approximately 12 years now, and totally kicks it, even when the snow is up to her butt. I so love the perseverance of the critters, who love us so much! Especially if cookies are involved...

Jewells, brother recalled when long time ago we took the family Chesapeake Bay Retriever to a kennel so we could take a family trip. When we picked him up, he looked at us like he didn't know who we were. He was able to maintain that attitude for about two minutes...
Then he was jumping on us kids and licking every face and hand in sight.
We had obviously hurt his feelings, but he forgave us!

267 When Dorkie Dork began having trouble grooming (arthritis and only 1 back leg will do that), she developed terrible dreds that were painful. Mama eventually trimmed her hair short to minimize dreds. It worked, but I think part of the motivation was so that she could put cute, little kitty sweaters on our beloved little feline.

270 Creeper -

I had a peke-faced cat for a year or so and found that the creases by the nose would get bacteria in them from tears. I bought makeup pads from a drug store and they were good about getting the area cleaned out and the cat eventually didn't mind the treatment.

YES!
I thought I was weird or something. Well, for those that have met me IRL, that would be true, but fresh cranberries and pheasant, try it next time your hunter person brings some home from a successful hunt. Also when preparing, slice up some plums or apricots when baking. It offsets the wild animal gaminess taste.

Wait, this is the Food Thread, right?

272 Creeper: Welcome to the Persian cat slave club.

I know what you mean. And when those mats get big, they can cause issues with the skin underneath.
Posted by: grammie winger at February 13, 2021 05:09 PM (45fpk)

My first Persian Himmy I got from the pound. She was so matted that her entire underside was one big mat, tying her legs together so she couldn't lie down right. I got her cut, and at the time I figured it was better to save what could be so she ended up with a strip of long hair about 2 inches wide down the back, like a vain balding man's combover. She was so happy, and there was about 2 pounds of hair cut off her.

Posted by: Oldcat at February 13, 2021 05:38 PM (eoQWY)

275 Our little black kitty, Scout, is part Persian and while her face is not as squashy, she does have a very short muzzle and is prone to sneezing fits and the occasional huffing and puffing that sounds like coughing, but more like an asthma attack. But despite being nearly 16, those episodes have decreased dramatically. We adopted her in 2015 from a house full of smokers, so when she was still a kitten she had a rough go for awhile.

I sometimes have them not shave the tail, as most cats don't need that. But they do grow a bit of fur fairly quickly and they don't mind looking odd themselves.

Never buy into that bit of breed lie. I follow cats not dogs but ninety percent of supposed h.a. cat claims are based on nothing at all. Best way is to meet the pet and find out.

279 She -- Pretty Girl -- is a medium/long-haired domestic tabby with a bit of Maine Coon. She has big eyes and a very bushy tail. Extremely lap-friendly and loves being petted. She's still feeling things out and making sure she lives here -- the first couple of days she didn't come out during the day, and after some nighttime interaction, went to hide and growled at me not to follow. So I let her be at her own pace and she's becoming chill. When I take my afternoon or evening constitutional (nap), she curls right up either on top or alongside. She's beginning to want to touch me with her paw and such. : - >

280 I found that a brush that actually helps with knots on Persians was a human baby's brush with wide spaced plastic tines instead of clumps of bristles, each with a ball on the end to avoid scratching the skin.

It is more like a comb, in effect.

Posted by: Oldcat at February 13, 2021 05:44 PM (eoQWY)

281 We had an indoor/outdoor fairly wild cat with longish hair. She never did take to being combed but when she got too matted up she would let me cut them out with scissors. The Great Pyr. dog that didn't like being brushed much was easier to deal with. I found a metal horse curry would do a decent job without tugging and making her wander off right way and we'd clip her every summer. She never did develop issues from being clipped; I decided all the dire FB warnings about don't clip a double coated dog really mean "don't clip and then ignore them" Once the hair was clipped I could curry the whole dog in a session and stay on top of grooming for a good while.
