The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

A true friend is someone who is there for you when he'd rather be anywhere else. Len Wein

Quote II

“I can think of nothing in Sunstein’s record that gives me confidence he can fix a deeply broken department like the Department of Homeland Security or that he has a particular commitment to migrants. We need to get past the idea that because people are deemed important, it’s important that they get an appointment.” Jeff Hauser, director of the Revolving Door Project

Quote III

“We don’t appreciate that air pollution is an invisible killer,” Neelu Tummala, an ear, nose and throat physician at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences

Quote IV

“Hopefully if there are any more victims out there that for whatever reason, maybe because of his stature, didn’t want to come forward, that they reach out to the police department so we can investigate further,” Sergeant Winfred Lewis of the Chesterfield County Police Department in Virginia

Quote V

I'm usually the person that I don't care what people say. I just move at my own pace. I don't care what people say, but it's just getting to the point where people are on TV saying stuff about me.' Tessica Brown

Had Bruce Springsprung leaned right he would have been crucified sometime ago.

Less than a week after he was featured in a high-profile Jeep Super Bowl ad — the first commercial of his lengthy career — news broke that Bruce Springsteen is facing DWI charges stemming from a November incident, and the car company appears to have pulled the spot from YouTube in response.

TMZ reports that the musician was arrested back on November 14 at the Gateway National Recreation Area in Sandy Hook, N.J., and he was cited for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and consuming alcohol in a closed area. Springsteen was reportedly cooperative during the arrest, and he has a court appearance scheduled at some point “in the next few weeks.”

Bruce, in case your skimming The ONT, here is a useful article for you.

I'm sorry. But, I don't find unconscious blacked out drunk to be a compromising position.

A Claremore police officer found Judge McCoy behind the wheel with her head slumped toward her chest. After admitting to drinking a full bottle of champagne, she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. A breathalyzer test revealed a blood alcohol content of .35—more than four times the legal limit.

I guess reconciliation is out of the question.

A New Smyrna Beach man dumped by his girlfriend while on vacation sent death threats, telling her he pictured her as a turkey on his plate and that he would dissect her children and eat their brains, police said.

The text messages struck fear in the victim, who reported that Joseph Costello was capable of carrying out his threats because he was mentally ill, his arrest report states.

Costello, 37, sent threatening text messages to the woman even as police were talking to her, the report states.

Of course essential workers need the Kung Flu vaccinations.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Last week, Shannon Goodsell — a 53-year-old cannabis delivery driver with underlying health conditions — was uncertain when she was going to get a coronavirus vaccine shot.

That is, until Thursday, when the state shifted cannabis workers into some of the highest vaccine prioritization tiers.

Those in the medicinal cannabis industry are now eligible to be vaccinated alongside health care workers in Phase 1a, according to guidelines updated by the California Department of Public Health Feb. 4.

There is leaving a negative comment. Then there is a libelous review. Ouch.

A man who left a negative review of a legal firm on the TrustPilot website has been ordered to pay £25,000 ($34,000) in libel damages.

Philip James Waymouth engaged London law firm Summerfield Browne online to provide advice but was unsatisfied with the service he received.

He then left a review accusing the firm of being "another scam solicitor", according to court documents.

The firm took legal action, stating that this was untrue and defamatory.

The number of business enquiries it received had dropped since the publication of the review, Summerfield Browne said.

Mr Waymouth had not engaged with Summerfield Browne's complaints procedure before leaving the review, the High Court in London heard.

He did not attend the online hearing or send a legal representative.

He previously said he had offered to remove the review in exchange for a refund of the £200 fee (plus VAT) he had paid but claimed the firm had not responded.

The English language and science continues to be slaughtered every day.

Midwives at a hospital in England were directed to no longer use words such as “breastfeeding” and “breast milk” in order to be more inclusive to trans parents.

"Human milk,” "breast/chest milk," or "milk from the feeding mother or parent" are the more acceptable terms for midwives to use at the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust in lieu of using the traditional “breast milk.”

The hospital is the first in the country to use the trans-friendly language within its maternity ward, which will now be known as the "perinatal services” department.

Cops don't always pay attention to your bumper stickers.

SANDY, Ore. (KOIN) — A Portland man was arrested in Sandy Saturday night on multiple charges including a DUII after letting his car roll into a deputy patrol car, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff Office.

A deputy said he first saw Jeffrey Cannon’s red Volkswagen Jetta rapidly approach him from behind just before 11 p.m. Saturday outside Sandy on Hwy 26, sheriff’s officials said.

The Jetta had a sticker on the back bumper that read: “Not drunk, avoiding potholes.”

I mentioned last night that tonight's ONT was going to be sketchy. Are there foods better cold than hot?

MY EXTREMELY UNCHILL QUEST TO MAKE HOT FOODS BETTER COLD
Cold pizza is canon, but what about cold mac and cheese? Cold fried rice? Maybe this is an idea I should have, um, put on ice

I’d like to reveal to you one aspect of how the sausage (this column) gets made. My editor really likes cold food and very badly wants you to like cold food, too. My recent story about hot versus cold sandwiches was her idea, for example, though I did ultimately come down on the side of the much sexier hot sandwich. (What can I say? I’m a sickass rebel who isn’t about to listen to any “boss” or “authority figure” who likes “cold sandwiches.”

Today’s piece about hot foods that are better cold was her idea, too. Now, I took issue with the idea that a cold sandwich could be just as good — nay, better! — than a hot sandwich. I’m a godly woman and have no interest in pursuing any kind of advocacy for the devil. But hot foods that are better cold, well, that’s just common sense. Everyone knows there’s no point in reheating pizza because it becomes a delicious cheesy cracker in the fridge overnight. Everyone likewise knows that stews and chilis are better the next day.

The ONT Musical Interlude

RIP Elliot Mazer.
Elliot Mazer, the longtime producer and engineer who helped craft albums for Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt, and the Band, among others, died at his San Francisco home on Sunday. He was 79. Mazer’s daughter Alison confirmed the producer’s death, adding that the cause was a heart attack after years of battling with dementia.

Alexander met Iggy Pop and formed The Stooges in 1967 and had a hand in arranging, composing and performing all of the songs that appeared on the band's first two albums, The Stooges and Fun House. He was fired from the band in August 1970 after showing up at a gig too drunk to play. via thisdayinmusic.com

If one were to follow NYC news, one knows most misdemeanor laws are not enforced. Unless you are a Genius Award Winner.

A man who allegedly stole at least eight pints of ice cream from a Manhattan business ended up clinging to the side of a building during his unsuccessful getaway, according to the NYPD

Police responded to a 911 call of larceny inside of a CVS located at 1500 Lexington Ave. When officers arrived, they allegedly engaged in a foot pursuit with a 30-year-old male

The man apparently tried to get down to the alleyway and got stuck on a small ledge, police said. ESU was called and the man was rescued and subsequently taken into custody.

Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian

I've held off on getting the vaccine because my sister had it and said she felt crumby the day after. Also, I went to lunch in a diner for the first time since Frau Whitler did the last shutdown. There was a sign on the door about having to give your name and address and so on. Which they didn't actually ask for. Then I noticed that most of the customers were men, and none of them were wearing masks. Yay.

252 The saga of Barq's "not root beer" -- I'm gonna cop a few quotes from wiki to explain this 'un.

It was known as Barq's Famous Olde Tyme Root Beer until 2012.

But actually, it wasn't marketed as root beer, even back in the 70s. Their slogan -- "Drink Barq's, It's Good". And the words 'root beer' didn't appear on the bottle or the cap.

For many decades, Barq's was not marketed as a "root beer". This was in part a desire to avoid legal conflict with the Hires Root Beer company, which was attempting to claim a trademark on the term "root beer". It was also due to differences from other root beers at the time. The formulation was sarsaparilla-based, contained less sugar, had a higher carbonation, and less of a foamy head than other brands.

Would love a 550/575M Fazzaz, and I've read the Ferrari factory service manual pretty much end to end (not in the original wop, oh, wait, do I get canceled for saying that?) and there's not much in general service I couldn't do myself, but at some point you have to say 'this is beyond your pay grade'. That's because it's "coke". A soda fountain, is where you get "coke" with ice cream mixed into it. Pop, is just sick and wrong.

This is why lunch is the noon meal, and dinner is the big meal. If you have dinner at mid-day, then the following lighter meal, is "supper".

Cognac and Coke is a frequent request from certain ethnic groups.

She was in the passenger side of a parked car, not driving.

The temperature of coffee out of a machine/pot is 160 degrees, far less than the 190-200 which McDs kept theirs at. At 160 you suffer minor discomfort, at 200 you suffer serious injury. And McDs had numerous other complaints of people suffering face and mouth injuries and did nothing. They sold a dangerous product and didn't warn their customers and got slapped for it.

Gina Carano been outspoken on the cancel cutlure bullshit and all the hoaxes, generating a lot of complaints from the perpetual offended on twitter.

Now, ironically, she's the target of a hoax. Her "offensive" tweet daring to compare today's political divide to nazi Germany: "Jews were beaten in the streets, not by nazi soldiers but by their neighbors."

She's been canceled and shunned.

These companies aren't doing it because of twitter, the companies are controlled by leftists and want to leverage their power to cleanse the world of non-leftists. Twitter is simply a tool they are using. Like when the left controls the government they have other leftists sue the government to change policy and they instantly surrender to the suit. They want this as an outcome.

575 McDonald's got hit with punitive damages because: 1) it kept its coffee at a particular, very high temperature because at a more normal, lower temperature that didn't tend to cause 3rd degree burns (but only 2nd), MCD would have to use better quality beans that would cost a few more cents per ginormous quantity; 2) MCD also knew that people tended to drive while drinking their only-because-it-uses-$hitty-beans too hot coffee and also tended to spill that coffee; 3) when that coffee would spill, all kinds of bad stuff could happen to the spiller and to third persons with no connection to either the Golden Arches or the only-because-it-uses-$hitty-beans too hot coffee. Yeah, there are people who should not be allowed to drink coffee and drive, but you can't do anything about that. However, the source can be cut off and it can decide to turn the coffee temp down 10 degrees by using better beans that don't suck. That's why it got exemplaried.

604 I saw this post in the sidebar:
"You know, there were literally weeks where I didn't mention Trump at all -- even when he was president. But these obsessive, twitter-obsessed meltbrains and softcocks cannot stop talking at him. Look at their twitter feeds sometimes- - it's like flipping through the personal blood-inked journals of a lunatic."

I'm not surprised they're talking about Trump...they're trying to poison him in the Republican party so they can take it back over, keep attention away from Joe Biden's melting brain, and scare others outside the establishment from ever considering running for office.

I'm more surprised, at least in the NeverTrumper world, about all the articles and talk about Marjorie Taylor Greene. A month ago, no one had ever heard of her, and now, she's denigrated and mentioned dozens of times a day. She, and the nonstop talk of Q-anon, are brazen attempts to label Trump supporters as crazies to purge from the party.

607 I take a contrary view. Coffee is supposed to be hot. The End.

Anyhoo, I never found McDs "gourmet" coffee all that and a bag of chips.

The reason is because it is usually/always/characteristically weak, and as every schoolboy knows, weak coffee is basically a sin against nature. I don't ordinarily eat at places like McDs anymore, but when I order coffee on the road there is a reason. Meaning I need the caffeine.

When they had "cheap" coffee, it was strong enough to drive straight across Montana west to east.

610 My Mr. Coffee, which is decent but not some high-end wonder machine, brews at 205. Most decent home machines are going to be in the same basic range (195 to 205). Mine has an insulated metal carafe designed to keep it hot till poured. This is all utterly normal. Yes, you can be burned. Badly even. Just like you can be burned if you spill a dish on yourself while removing it from the oven, which goes a damn sight hotter than 205. Reasonable people accept that this is how life works.

That's fine and dandy, but when someone spills : uber hot coffee on themselves while driving, loses control, and causes a major wreck that leaves you paralyzed, you're going to take a lot of comfort from this. Again, for a few cents more per large unit of beans, MCD can brew a coffee that does not have to be kept at a very high temperature. The problem is that only MCD can avoid the problem because -- you can't fix stupid.

I'm on the fence. I like the new party option, but that's a tough road with centuries of failure as evidence against. Trying to overthrow the GOP establishment with Trump-style supporters also seems like an impossible task. I kinda hope the Senate convicts Trump, the party goes crazy trying to purge holes supporters, and it pisses Trump off enough to fully engage in a third party. It may not work, but it'll be a wild ride.

That, or we fall apart as a nation, Yugoslavia 2.0 style. Working in the Balkans, I'd like to avoid that option, too, as the results are suboptimal.

Yeah, Charlie Sykes and some of his guests on the Bulwark podcast were discussing this idea, too. They've been all over the place on how to handle the GOP in a post-Trump era. At first, they sounded defeated, and wanted to help Dems (respectable, centrist, return to normalcy dems like Biden) crush the GOP and return order. Then, they talked purging Trump supporters from the party and reclaiming it. Now, there's bubbling talk of a third party. I don't think that will go anywhere, as they don't actually have any voter support (unlike a Trump third party would).

639 actually, i have an Army story about being told to make morning coffee for the day shift REMFs on a CA ARNG excursion i spent time on...
bottom line: the first morning, someone poured out the coffee i had carefully made, as no one had told young aspiring lifer that we were going to have coffee ready for them. (i had used the LAST of the coffee they had to brew that too!) much unhappiness occurred that morning.
i was bulletproof, because my officer stood by me, and said he had watched me carefully make the pot that was thrown away.
the next two nights saw me making a pot of rocket fuel.
the third night we were informed that they would be making their own coffee from now on, because what i made was too strong for everyone involved, starting with Col Muy Importante, who was an insecure little prick, even before he got his star.

644 Something changed in the retail coffees about the time they started offering 50 gazillion different flavors. Remember Folger's used to have (basically) 1 or 2 choices. Drip coffee and something else. While it wasn't high Q arabica, if made strong it would wake yer ass UP. All of that stuff Maxwell House, makes me sick now. I'm not a coffee snob, but stomach pain is right the hell out.

Buy bean coffee and roast your own. Any variety practically at random, will blow away the canned crap. It isn't expensive and won't cause you gastro-intestinal discomfort. I roast in a frying pan or on a cookie sheet in the oven.

I use the TLAR method of coffee brewing. "That looks about right". Pour over does make a good cup but most people want to get more "mileage" out of the grounds. Hobos used to call the first run battery acid, and would boil coffee grounds pretty much indefinitely. Then they donated it to Church basements everywhere, apparently.

They had a few good hit recently. Picked up a modest 10# of both Panama geisha variety and of a five year old Sumatra, before that they had available of a rare harvest from Yemen and I picked up 20# of that.

Of these three, the taste difference is noticeable to everyone except those who destroy their coffee with cream and sugar.

The aged Sumatra has the strangest smell in roasting, brewing and consuming.

You should be able to get a $5 air popcorn popper down at Salvation Army that will work as well as commercial roasters on your average bean.

You can take it a few seconds after first crack and make the best coffee yet.

For those with stomachs that argue with the roast, choose something NOT from high altitude, as those tend to be "brighter" (ie 'acidic').

685 No, air poppers don't work worth a crap for roasting coffee. It "works", but.

One thing, they aren't designed for it. They don't *quite* get hot enough either, which isba tease, and the machine will likely soon burn up anyway and self destruct. And they only make a half cup at a time.

I roast a pound or more at a time. Trust me, I tried all the different methods. The fancy electronic bespoke units are junk. "Pour 1/3rd cup of beans into roaster..."

Who wants to roast twice a day?? The machine was like $200 bucks and soon died. Digital LED display - electronic controls + heat = expensive paperwieight. Better off with a Black and Decker heat gun.

Like I said, way too much wankery in the coffee world.
