Blast from the Past: A Commentator Describes Northern (Liberalish) "Conservatism," in 1897

Holy mackerel.

You read this description of "Northern conservatism," and its endless capitulation to radical progressivism, and subsequent defense of the victories of radical progressivism as the new status quo to be championed, and you tell me this wasn't written just yesterday.

As opposed to 1897.

He wrote in the late nineteenth century that the women's rights movement would certainly prevail, because its only opponent was Northern Conservatism, which failed to ever conserve anything.

It may be inferred again that the present movement for women's rights will certainly prevail from the history of its only opponent: Northern conservatism.

This is a party which never conserves anything. Its history has been that it demurs to each aggression of the progressive party, and aims to save its credit by a respectable amount of growling, but always acquiesces at last in the innovation.

What was the resisted novelty of yesterday is today one of the accepted principles of conservatism; it is now conservative only in affecting to resist the next innovation, which will tomorrow be forced upon its timidity and will be succeeded by some third revolution; to be denounced and then adopted in its turn.

American conservatism is merely the shadow that follows Radicalism as it moves forward towards perdition. It remains behind it, but never retards it, and always advances near its leader. . . .

Its impotency is not hard, indeed, to explain.

It is worthless because it is the conservatism of expediency only, and not of sturdy principle.

It intends to risk nothing serious for the sake of the truth, and has no idea of being guilty of the folly of martyrdom.

It always when about to enter a protest very blandly informs the wild beast whose path it essays to stop, that its "bark is worse than its bite," and that it only means to save its manners by enacting its decent role of resistance: The only practical purpose which it now serves in American politics is to give enough exercise to Radicalism to keep it "in wind," and to prevent its becoming pursy and lazy, from having nothing to whip.

No doubt, after a few years, when women's suffrage shall have become an accomplished fact, conservatism will tacitly admit it into its creed, and thenceforward plume itself upon its wise firmness in opposing with similar weapons the extreme of baby suffrage; and when that too shall have been won, it will be heard declaring that the integrity of the American Constitution requires at least the refusal of suffrage to asses. There it will assume, with great dignity, its final position.

Dabney was a Confederate Army chaplain so that partly explains his vehemence about Northern conservatism.

And yeah: He thought that slavery was a conservative institution worth conservatively conserving.

Dabney defended the biblical "righteousness" of slavery and opposed public schools.

That said: Man, is this a near-perfect description of today's form of "conservatism," treating the victories the left scored five years ago as the New Tradition to be defended, or what?

Fake Conservatism is not standing athwart history shouting "Stop!" but rather meekly mumbling, "Just wait five years and then we'll join you as passionate brothers-in-arms."

A "conservatism" that is nothing but "What the progressives wanted five years ago" is not any kind of philosophy. It is only a never-ending retreat.

9 Yeah that's a somewhat famous line. The Goldwater Conservatism that came into existence in the 50s is a specific ideology though.

Progressivism, conservative, and liberal were used in a radically different fashion those days. Some Progressives were radically anti-communist.

But my point stands - Northern "Conservatism" is nothing new. It's just Northern Statism. And the notion that the State, as is, must prevail. That's all it is.

Its not conservatism. Its progressivism for Cowardly wannabes. They don't have the balls to stand up and say "I support the progressive agenda and I will work hard to enact it". Instead they use subterfuge and outright lies to enact the progressive agenda and then bleat about hands tied no majority, need the house, senate and president to get those conservative items passed. You are not going to get a government that tilts more toward individual liberty from anywhere that people live on top of each other in buildings full of rooms they don't own, or so close to each other that they can shake hands through the windows, or such that they've got all their money wrapped up in a lot so small that their neighbor can fuck it all up with one bad oil change.

People that live that way - vote a certain way. They LIVE a certain way. And they choose to stay. That tells you all you need to know. Not all there is to know. Just all you need to know.

Addressed in Montesquieu's Spirit of the Laws (though the choice aspect isn't really relevant, the environment affects people regardless of choice in the matter). The general form of a Republic was only ever sustainable with a large population of small landholders because that creates a certain type of person and gives them as a bloc sufficient power. The industrial changes in the late 19th lead directly and predictably into Wilson's and FDR's administrations.

145 Re 112, this may be the canonical version:

To foreigners, a Yankee is an American.

To Americans, a Yankee is a Northerner.

To northerners, a Yankee is an Easterner.

To easterners, a Yankee is an New Englander.

To New Englanders, a Yankee is a Vermonter.

And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast.
Attributed to E. B. White, author of Charlotte's Web, except for the final line, which is credited to Robert Frost. This is the way I remember it from "How to Get Around MIT," a guidebook for freshmen that included a section on New England culture, cuisine, and dialect.

146 From the next paragraph in Dabney's essay (linked on my name):

"Their polar star is always found in the
answer to the question, 'Which will be the more popular?' As soon as any
agitation of this kind goes far enough to indicate a possibility of
success, their resistance ends. Each of them begins to argue thus in his
private mind: -- 'The proposed revolution is of course preposterous, but
it will be best for me to leave opposition to it to others. For if it
succeeds, the newly enfranchised will not fail to remember the opponents
of their claim at future elections, and to reward those who were their
friends in the hour of need.' Again: it has now become a regular trick
of American demagogues in power to manufacture new classes of voters to
sustain them in office. It is presumed that the gratitude of the newly
enfranchised will be sufficient to make them vote the ticket of their
benefactors."
