A Little of This. A Little of That.

  • Selective hearing at it's very best.

  • There is no way this would fly at our home.

  • Sledding is an awesome winter time adventure. This pup agrees.

  • If he only had thumbs. H/T Hrothgar.

    Meet The PetMorons

    20201123_115614.png

    Hi,

This is Ripley, my new pupper. She's a Beabull (1/2 Beagle, 1/2 English Bulldog). My beloved BoTerrier Guinness shuffled off this mortal coil in September leaving us dog-less for the first time in 28 years. I applied for several bulldog rescues but had no luck. Then I found this little lass right before Thanksgiving. She's the most docile, easy going dog I've ever owned. Our 3 cats do not share that opinion as they're scurrying for the safety of the high cabinets to escape the rampaging puppy.

Thanks for the AOS Pet Thread. It's a weekly reader. - JohnO

Ripley has a unique background. And as if you didn't know it, he's adorable. Sorry to hear about your pup Guiness passing. But Ripley looks like he keeps your mind off your loss. Thanks for sharing today.

This is my Boykin Spaniel “Chief”. This Little Brown Dog is a great retriever and companion. He has given me years of fun and is the picture of loyalty. - Michael

Chief certainly is photogenic besides being a great retriever and companion. Do you use him hunting or does he retrieve other items? Definitely a cute spaniel. Thanks for your contribution today.

Hello! Long time lurker here! This is my sweet boy Monty. He’s the most social, sweet boy I have ever known. He’s Richard Dawson on Family Feud (dating myself, I know). He’s ruled the roost for 9.5 years. I simply adore him. He was born on the 4th of July, and is one patriotic pup! Plus, he’ll happily wear party hats if treats are involved! Love the pet thread; thank you! - Donna

Well, at least he isn't Newkirk . Great photo of your dog and green grass. So how do you keep the hats on that handsome doggeh? Thanks for taking the time to submit Monty's story.

This is my friend Jimbro's new puppy, Ollie. From what I gather, he looks worried because he's moving into a home with two other dogs and doesn't know what's what just yet. I hope by the time you see this Oillie is settled in and part of the pack. - Sobek Pundit

Our contributor is a regular and I have one thing to say. I wish I could sketch half as good as you do. Thank you for gracing the Pet Thread with your God given talents. Good luck to Ollie.

is is Bella, our 8 year old seal point ragdoll. Like most ragdolls, she's very docile and loves attention. Our normally cat-hating GSD will snuggle with her on the couch sometimes. - PabloD

My oh my, what beautiful blue eyes Bella has. I can understand why your dog snuggles with her, she's a beautiful kitteh. Thanks so much for sharing.

    Hello!

Long time lurker and seldom poster Thecommander here! Here are two of our three beauties! The black kitty is a stray we just recently took in, uniquely named Little Black Cat, or LBC for short. The regal white kitty is Beam. He is named for Jim Beam, as he hails from KY like the beverage! Love the pet thread - keep up the awesome work!

Holy blackness Thecommander. That is one beautiful black cat. I wonder how wonderful that coat will be after hanging with you for awhile. Beam is a very regal kitteh indeed. Thanks for sharing with us today.

    Indiana (1).jpg

    Hello,

I wanted to submit my German Shepherd girl, Indiana "Indy" for the pet thread. My wife and I are from Indiana, and thought it was a great name (and from a great movie series). Indy is 14 weeks old, and is from an unwanted litter of puppies. Her mother is a pure White German Shepherd, and her father is darker like Indy is. - Nick in Tallahassee

I have to say that GSD pups are one of the cutest pups there are. Love those big perky ears. Unfortunately they grow into them too fast. Good luck with her and may she live a long and healthy life.

7 All great photos-and the beabull makes you just want to hug him. I was once in the hospital where a young nurse was enthused by her new beabull, but I didn't know what that was. Now I know. The shepherd pup is very sweet too.

I hope the poster CN is enjoying her new pup which I believe she was excited about picking up today.

Yesterday, she decided to start walking over my keyboard while I was working. I convinced her that it was a bad idea. The dogs are well behaved unless there is a delivery. 19 Poor kitty!

If we're brutally honest with ourselves, we'd acknowledge that this lockdown and work from home world has been profoundly unfair to our pets. Our egos won't allow us to contemplate that the 9 or so hours we're away from home, five days a week, are a tremendous relief to our pets.

The fact they must endure our presence all day and all night... what a massively selfish thing we're doing. Not at all considering how blissful it is for them when we're not home. I tend to think of when we're home as being their job. They never get a day off now. Never. Until we go shopping, or unless we go on vacation. And then people are heartless enough subject their poor animals to always taking them along, everywhere.

    It's so sad. We're shitty.

20 Well, Logan has been gone three weeks now. Tomorrow, we drive all the way down to Graham WA to look at a GSD litter that has 3 girls for us to choose from. They're 4 weeks old, I think.

Dunno how I'm going to feel about it but figured it can't hurt to at least meet them. Logan was such a good dog, we're going to get two pups in his place.

I hope they look as good as Indy.

Nope. At the last half hour, the family reclaimed the pupper and announced the transfer to the UK was cancelled. They will remain in NJ. This is probably great for the doggo who was reported to be unhappy in foster, but sad for me. Worse still, I told another agency that I had a time to pick up a pet, so was removed from the list. It sucks. I am now waitlisted for a few breeders, which also sucks, and I will keep looking, which sucks as now the rescues are calling pitbulls "small-under 20lbs" and putting pink bows on them, which only fools the absolutely insane. I sent the new dog bed, etc back to Chewy.

    28 Lovely pets today!

Well after losing out or being rejected for seven different rescue kitties, I gave up and put down a deposit for a purebred kitten!

KA-ching! but at least the breeders really like me (and my wallet) ... I'm excited and not even worried about "raising a kitten" any longer.

Burt you crack me up - I hope you weren't serious?!?! Anyway that's why Chows are great. They don't care if we're here or not here pretty much. They are excellent at fully ignoring us.

Posted by: BlackOrchid at January 30, 2021 03:43 PM (j9HX3)

    29 CN I feel you

the rescue thing - it's really rough!

I also have a deposit for a puppy down - I've been on that list for 6 months now. not their fault - having trouble with the breedings. it happens.

This is why I love the damned Amish. supposedly they're Evil and Heartless with their pet breeding but honestly they are just .. they treat them like pets, and are pragmatists. there are good and bad Amish breeders and it's pretty easy to tell the difference. almost everyone I know now gets their cats and dogs from Lancaster County. It's the only way!

31 Ace the Golden on the roof brought back a memory. I slept on the top bunk as a child. Dixie would leap up to sleep with me. We got a 2nd dog who was not able to leap like that. But he wanted to be with her and me so he taught himself to scramble up the ladder. This was in the stone ages before smart phones with video so no pics or video of it.

Kid #2 had one shipped from a top breeder in Korea. So I understand. I want to adopt, my last few were rescues, and I was very pleased.
I'm on a couple of lists through AKC, but that may take a while, and honestly I'd prefer an adult. Another problem is that the breeds most available on AKC are breeds I really don't want do to overbreeding and health issues.

Well no pitbull for me. Many small breeds would be great, but no pitbulls ever. The rescues have done their best to discourage new breeders, so you have a few good ones left and mostly nowhere in the NE part of the country (unless you want the really popular breeds, which are starting to suffer from inbreeding and overbreeding).

If I wanted a pitbull I could have my choice, same with sickly or snappy chihuahuas (the only dog that ever bit me was a snappy chihuahua and they say "no kids" for that reason). The subterfuge with the pits is crazy. Calling them "lab mixes" or "bullies" or just "mix breed" but obviously mostly pitbull is disconcerting to me. Just no, and it makes me suspicious of the agency.

Biggest thing I have noticed about the breed but did not realize would be both a plus and a minus. Territorial. Ajax is pretty damn territorial about other dogs who pee or poop in the areas we frequent.

The plus side of that is that he does not seem to be one to run off. The couple of times he has gotten off the leash in the neighborhoods we have been in, if I am with him, he will always keep me in sight range and if I move to go back in, he will run after me. When he was staying at my parents, they accidently let him out when they were going to the store. He was there for two hours alone and would not leave the yard. Also would not let any kids IN the front yard.

62 Funny, I was given to believe that greyhounds are
actually somewhat difficult as pets, sorta like huskies who need far
more activity than most owners can properly provide.

    Posted by: Doctor.Boom at January 30, 2021 04:22 PM (zWl33)

Not at all. They sleep more than a college freshman, and only need to race around about 4 minutes every other day. In fact, they make good pets for people in apartments or condos, as long as there is a park nearby where they can do their racing. Seriously about 7 minutes max. Then they spend the rest of the night watching television on the couch.

    63 Good afternoon, Horde,

The COVID globalist bad guys want everyone feeling isolated, lonely, desperate, and down.

But our good dogs and cats (birds, guinea pigs, every critter) love us.

    How cool is that?

64 So greyhound might not need a 6ft fence. I have a park very nearby with ample space for a good sprint, but was told no. Grandson thought a greyhound would be great, so I looked into this. All the rescues think a pit would be perfect.."how about the one in the green tulle tutu?"

That's a fifteen year commitment we just don't believe we can fulfill. Good luck with your two new girls. I hope they give you as much love and joy as our GSD gave us. Also, I admire your optimism. Murph the Smurf almost did us in all by herself. I can't imagine raising two of them at the same time.

Himalayans are -- they are a mix (long ago, now) of Siamese and Persian. Ragdolls have the genes for points, but don't have that flat Persian face. Perhaps they are an offshoot of Himalayans? Not sure. Ragdolls got their name because, the story goes, the cats relaxed to the point of limpness when picked up. ("I'm sorry! I broke your cat!")

We have an adult cat with a persistent "cough" or "hack" that will not go away. Vet says it's a hairball and recommended some tube paste the cat will lick off its paw that is supposed to help pass the ball.

We've been at this for 3 weeks, and 3 quarters of tube is gone with no relief for the cat.

77 The maintenance people at my apartment dump needed to replace a ceiling tile. The guy first came in, but reported that one of my cats was trying to get out. So Miss Linda popped Wolf, the probable culprit, into his carrier, and left him until later when she could come sit with the cats. When the maintenance man showed up, he plainly was afraid of Wolf, who is a *big* cat anyway and all black. He said, "I remember that one from 4 years ago. I guess I'll be okay while you're here."

You'd think my cat was a pitbull or something. Wolf doesn't hiss or growl. How could someone be afraid of a *cat*?

Her *own* cat? Remarkable. Well, a cat, even a big one, can be fended off with a broom or other long device. And the maintenance guy was big and tall, wearing jeans and boots, so it's not like he was in shorts and Wolf could sink his fangs or claws into a bare leg.

124 I'm sure everybody knows this, but I can't emphasize the importance of having your dog microchipped and having its name and your phone number on its collar.
Yesterday, a Silky Terrier was frantically running around my neighborhood and almost got run over by a car.
I sat down at the end of my driveway and called for it to come to me and it did. All it had was a rabies tag on it's collar and when I called the Vet on the tag I found out they evidently hadn't registered the dog so I took it too my Vet to have the dog scanned and there was no microchipped.

I then decided to drive around and see if anyone was looking for the dog. Luckily a neighbor that lives 4 streets over was outside, recognized the dog and was able to call the neighbor from his cell phone.
Glad this had a happy ending. The dog was also not neutered.

Posted by: olddog in mo, uckfay ancercay at January 30, 2021 03:43 PM (ju2Fy)

The color pattern for both those and Himalayan cats comes from a gene pair that makes the color "ink" in the hairs very temperature sensitive, so in warm areas it bleaches to near white, colder areas like ears, tail, paws it is nearly the natural black color it would be without the gene.

Eye color is related to hair color in subtle ways, so the iris is not tinted much and appears blue rather than green or yellow.

127 One might assume that a shelter would know a pit bull when they see one.

oh they know. they were just being creative.

once the local shelters all went "no kill" they just filled up to the brim with pitties

not the pitties fault! we have a lot of dog fighting around here (thank you mushroom farms!)

any dog NOT a pit or a chihuahua ends up (hopefully) in foster b/c otherwise they lose their minds in the local SPCA with the zillion pitties barking constantly

our local one had to build a separate BUILDING for the cats b/c it was so loud! it's awful. such a shame.

no kill is a mess. some good pits rot while the ones that are really not adoptable just take up space and bark and jump all day long. ugh!

    interesting!

with my dogs it's the opposite - snow/winter makes them lighter even changes their nose color from black to pinkish - "snow nose"

dogs in cold climes are lighter and even change with the seasons (really just bc undercoat comes and goes and tends to be light in color)

    129 Cat question:

We have an adult cat with a persistent "cough" or "hack" that will not go away. Vet says it's a hairball and recommended some tube paste the cat will lick off its paw that is supposed to help pass the ball.

We've been at this for 3 weeks, and 3 quarters of tube is gone with no relief for the cat.

Cat is on Iams Proactive Health Hairball Reduction dry food.

    Suggestions?

Sometimes a sneeze for a cat sounds like a cough. Might have a upper resp. infection - did the vet check for that?

Some foxes in the arctic change color fully to white for winter, this might be similar to that. Even on normal cats without the gene if you part the hair on a solid color cat the part near the skin will be much paler.

131 I think squirrels just chase each other for the fun of it.

My cats certainly do that. Often Cat A will chase B, then both will stop and switch roles, B chasing A back across the house.

132 so yes hopefully soonish I will be getting a bengal
Posted by: BlackOrchid at January 30, 2021 05:44 PM (j9HX3)

Bengals are **very** active cats so you might want to consider if you are used to that. I mean, they make giant hamster wheels for them to burn off energy.

133 Those ears on Indy! Lol. The rest of her will catch up. My GSD Bruno is in his second year and is filling out some now.

I had a active cat that just had to go out and hunt/patrol the area, he was very serious. I tried keeping him in at first, but he learned to dodge out thru the garage door as I drove in. We soon came to a deal that he wouldn't do that, but I would usually let him out when I got home and instead of eating dinner he would patrol for a while. He used to signal me by rubbing his paws on both sides of the back door knob, up and down exactly making the motion of the knob needed to open.

He eventually got taken down by a coyote here in CA, but he needed that outside time and he made it 13 years in bandit country.

Good luck with your Bengal - my purebreds are Minuets, but with regular legs, kind of like old-style Persians before breeders started destroying their heads.

With the regular legs, they *are* cute. The Munchkin mutation arose in Lousy-ana, I understand.

    138 omg oldcat

    those are ADORABLE!

since my dog(s) tend to be super long haired and just hair city, I thought it might be better to go with a short-haired cat breed
