Disney Lucasfilm Strikes Deal With Its Red China Business Partners to Produce Chinese Communist Party Propaganda Under the Star Wars License

Moved from the sidebar.

Presumably, this version of Star Wars will have the franchise's (anemic, admittedly) anti-authoritarian messaging stripped out.

From "Disney Star Wars Is Dumb:"

Now that the CCP's pet gerbil has been placed into the U.S. Presidency, and with the possibility of Bob Iger being appointed as ambassador to China, the propagandist possibilities are endless.

James Waugh, VP of Franchise Content & Strategy for Lucasfilm, says that the author of this story will bring very specific Chinese perspectives to the world building. Though it’s likely that James conflates the perspective of the Chinese people with the perspective of the CCP, which are entirely different and separate.

Chen Yang, the Vice President & Chief Editor of China Literature, claims that this effort will show online literature's "inclusiveness." Amusingly however, we already know that this "inclusive" story will feature an exclusively Chinese sector of the galaxy.

Below, Kathleen Kennedy proudly introducing her new Chinese Communist Propaganda Merchandizing Opportunity, plus some of the propaganda they're already pumping out.

>
CoRpOrAtIoNz ArE oUr FrEnZ

That Star Wars Girl gets the object of the Chinese Communist critique wrong. She reads it as a critique of the Communist Party ruling class.

But that's not it. It's how they depict the West:

Someone was just saying something about corporations being our frenz but I didn't catch it all.

We care about you, and we'd hate to see you lose everything and end up living in a ditch just because you couldn't resist telling a tranny joke. We want our employees to happy and healthy, as long as you remain a perfect corporate spokesman 24/7. Otherwise we would be forced to withdraw your health insurance and the health insurance of your children. Is having independent thoughts that go against prevailing corporate orthodoxy really worth the safety of your children?

We love you and only want what's best for you. And what's best for you is to never violate any of our HR policies in word, thought, or action either at work or at home -- and definitely not on the internet. Don't you agree?

China's government doesn't like ghosts in movies so the people never had the chance to show good judgement and not see the 2016 Ghostbusters (tend to be down on time travel as well, so not sure how the last Avengers movie managed to get into theaters there). This was another place Sony failed, as they knew they wouldn't have that market but still spent enormously on the film. Had it had a smaller budget, we might have been subject to a sequel.

Worst years of my life. Had to basically learn Calculus on my own.

I've heard the ghost thing is about respect for ancestors. I'd guess time travel is probably that or not wanting the population to think of what the present could look like if things were tweaked in the past and contemplating if it would be better, but that is a WAG on my part.

147 It's too bad it won't be translated to English. I'm betting that the hero is actually heroic and all the good people have good values. That those values might be "socialistic" which some of us used to call being a good person *without* the aid of the state making you do it (note how any time anyone helps someone else the socialists will claim that it's socialism - oh, you helped your friend who was in a bind, that's socialism!).

Sure, it's propaganda about how it's good to be a good person and being good is rewarded. But that's hardly different from TLJ where Po was punished for being a bad boi and had to learn his lesson about being subservient to authority while all the grrrls in charge of things tittered on and were rewarded for being the best ever.

Posted by: OneEyedJack at January 15, 2021 04:52 PM (z79tQ)

180 Regarding the statement, American Thinker does not have the money for lawyers, was probably told by its insurers to grovel, and are afraid of being deplatformed as they do not run their own platform. The proof is in the pudding when PA Lt. Gov. argues saying that fraud existed in the election was not protected speech (which means sedition).

We shall see when some of the other defamation cases go to trial. Remember the requirement is you must prove the statement is false or has a reckless disregard for the truth using a clear and convincing standard of evidence. Mark Steyn's case has been going on forever for example which is defensive lawfare--not the truth of the matter.

The voting services company in question is a public figure and cannot assert its actions are private as they involve a dispute over a public contractor's actions.

However, normal liability coverage does not often cover defamatory actions or it means a court fight over it.

Don't play in the legal pool unless you want to be proven all wet.

I wouldn't think Dominion would have a good case here. They're clearly a "public figure" (same analysis applies to companies, right? I have no idea, to be honest, but I would assume it's the same test) and "actual malice" is a VERY high burden.

The answer / initial defense would be "we thought what we was writing was true, and we have seen nothing to suggest that it's not true. Shall we got to discovery and learn more?" Right? I mean, why bend the knee like that?

The villains in Chinese Communist cinema, if they are Chinese, are Taiwanese. In spy movies with a hidden enemy agent conspiracy, they are unmasked Taiwanese.

Considering that the midget homunculus George Lucas has revealed that the evil empire in Star Wars represented the United States, and the plucky rebels the Viet Cong, and woke sequels promote emasculating weakening of our society, this kind of communist knob gobbling is what the franchise has always been about in the mind of the creator.

227 189, you reversed the burden of proof. The burden is on the person or company alleging defamation. Strict scrutiny applies here so the narrowly tailored exception is defamation of character through libel or slander. That requires the plaintiff--Dominion, to prove that Powell either knowingly lied or had a reckless disregard for the truth and that Dominion's reputation was damaged by this action. The standard of evidence for the plaintiff is clear and convincing which is the highest standard in civil litigation.

It is a threat that won't win but can bankrupt people without paid legal staff. Powell can probably crowd raise the money and they might not like Mr. Croomer on the witness stand nor the CEO-any contradictory statements between their stand testimony and prior recorded statements is an issue.

Let's assume you're right, and Dominion did absolutely nothing wrong, there was just a bunch of suspicious stuff that it turns out all has honest explanations for it.

Reporting on that suspicious stuff is protected speech, and is why defamation laws are very wary of infringing on that kind of stuff. You can read a much more elegant version of what i'm saying in sullivan v new york times.

For a news organization to allow the threat of a lawsuit to keep them from reporting on a topic ... I mean, that's not something that happens in a healthy society.

There was massive fraud they stole the election with that fraud. Whether it was paper ballots, electronic fuckery, scanning ballots more than once, whatever. The math just doesn't work for the outcome we got. Embrace the power of "and."

But I *do* suspect that Dominion contributed. and here's why: their post-election behavior. They had no response to any of the allegations for a week or so, refused any interviews, refused summonses and went to ground. Then they put up a bullet-list refutation and started suing. That is not good or honest behavior, and that kind of opacity has no place in American elections.

How they may have contributed, I don't know - vote-flipping, multi-scanning, injecting ballots via flash media into compromised systems, whatever - but their post-election behavior does make me think that contributed to the theft in some manner.

260 Strangely enough one of the things that kicked off the American revolution was a libel case.

At the time, libel wasn't about truth or falsehood, it was about saying something defaming about a powerful figure. If you said it, then you were guilty, even if it was true. I can't remember the exact details of the case, but basically it went like this:

The jury was in one of the colonies, a governor or someone was suing someone for libel. The defendant's lawyer convinced the jury to negate the charge and find them not guilty because he argued "the truth is an absolute defense against libel"

how can it be libelous if its true?

Now we're at the reverse point: saying something the powers that be do not want to be said is grounds for persecution and destruction, even if its true.

285 260 Christopher, You are referring to the Peter Zenger case and yes that played a part in the 1st Amendment drafting.

Zenger was a newspaper editor and published some not so flattering stories about the governor. He was being tried for seditious libel--that is a false statement that undermined people's confidence in the government under English law at the time. He asserted truth as a defense which I believe was not allowed in common law at the time. The jury though acquitted him despite the law.

That is also entirely possible. In my first comment (which was rejected as spam, so I had to change it), I made a bigger point about "compromised systems." I think it is also entirely possible that the system are so leaky that they could be abused by someone(s) with knowledge. Also based only on behavior, the refuses of state Secretaries of State to permit auditing before the machines were purged points at the possibility of endpoint (as opposed to systemic) corruption. But whether they had inside knowledge is yet another question.

I completely agree. There's no way to get around the trade secrets problem and the contracts signed between the municipalities and Dominion, and I completely get why Dominion makes them sign those contracts and works to hide their trade secrets and copyrighted software. Totally get it.

Which is why I think it's completely irresponsible for the US to be using private third party contractors to electronically run our elections. Either use paper ballots, or some kind of open source linux-like project if we *must* make elections electronic.

298 242 bear, she does not have to "prove" anything. You reversed the burden here. The plaintiff, that is Dominion, must prove that her statements were false because she maliciously made them or had a reckless disregard for the truth.

From a shop perspective, Dominion's pleading is impressive. Just informed speculation at this point, but I suspect that it will be able to carry its burden and that Powell will need to present a defense. And even if she didn't have to do so, this is her opportunity to vindicate her reputation and prove the greatest conspiracy in American history. Wouldn't it be irresponsible not to?

301 Whig, Powell's main advantage is that she understands litigation since she litigates. She may even, by now, have a fairly decent understanding of defamation law. You can't just scream "lawsuit" and scare her. The substantive problem is that we don't know what statements are literally, as made, wrong (i.e., false) and the issue is specific language -- you said X but it was really Y and Y is barely distinguishable from X, but it is not, literally, X. Then there's also the expense of hiring forensic experts.

303 278, Harry, most people do not 'get' defamation nor 1st Amendment analysis. There is no way that Dominion can claim that it is not a public figure so NYT v. Sullivan more or less puts a court in a straight jacket. People do not get the idea that the person alleging defamation has the burden of proof because this is a civil case. And damn few plaintiff defamation cases ever meet the clear and convincing std. in a public figure case.

The assertion that Powell has to prove that her statements were true is simply not so as a matter of law. She can do that of course but not required.

307 While I don't agree with Brian's vocal defense of Dominion (see above for why - it all looks hinky as fuck to me), I do agree with him on one point: from the standpoint of challenging this immediate past election, it was a side show. There was more than enough evidence of outcome-changing fraud through traditional means like fraudulent ballots and various other red flags like the 4 AM vote dumps and huge number of Democrat president-only ballots to demonstrate how corrupt the election was.

I think Dominion was probably a problem, too, but that will take years or longer to prove because it's a very tough investigation with ephemeral information that has been purged by the SoSes. Dominion wasn't, however, necessary to prove out the fraud in 2020. Keep that in mind. Whether or not they were guilty or complicit, their input wasn't needed to pull off what the Dems did. It may well make it easier next time, though.

Which is why their sooper-dooper J-20 stealth fighter is a dog of an aircraft, as well as the sooper-dooper Z-10 attack helicopter.

The same problem plagues their J-15 naval fighter (a stolen copy of the Sukhoi Su-33), which is so underpowered that it can barely launch from their knockoff Russian-design carriers, much less carry enough ordnance to be a credible threat. The J-15 is so bad that the Chinese navy had to radically scale back their plans for the carrier program, because it would be a waste of money without a decent naval fighter.

Posted by: x at January 15, 2021 05:27 PM (0tE/i)

370 339 rhomboid, it is technical but look up adjudication of votes and logging issue which is done via Dominion software. There is another, that the Data Integrity Group picked up on which was the data feed between county servers and Scytel vote reporting servers which then fed Edison (media) and SOS office results. There was demonstrated that the data feed was corrupt. That was raised in several state legislative hearings. The reason that it was not a primary claim is that most states have laws on election challenges that require an apparently valid claim that more illegal votes were cast than the margin of victory. It is not that the challenger won but that there is no way to tell who won. Thus, it is easy through datamining to determine if a voter moved out of state, if a voter voted out of county, was underage at the time of the vote, was excluded from voting due to felon, civil committal for mental issues, or non-citizen, and so forth. Then you get to cases like WI where the two counties, Dane and the one Milwaukee is in, classified people as shutins illegally in order to send them a ballot, in GA, ballot drop boxes violated state laws versus chain of custody, and so on.

372 It's kinda funny. Whenever I buy something, I find out where it's made. First question: Is it made in China. Most specifically, mainland China. If it is, I move on and find an equivalent product made pretty much anywhere else in the world, America/Canada being top choice. Not the designed in America/Made by China gambit either. Actual North American hands/assets putting it all together. Or other, non-Chinese slave labor hands.

So now, for media of any sort, I'm going to have to start asking and investigating: Is it from China? Not shlocky kung fu sense of the notion, but is the Corporation assembling this production heavily invested in China? Do they outsource production there? Do they cow to overseas tyranny and play a bipolar game of freedom here in America (for promotional purposes) and then censor content to appease investment masters overseas? IOW is their product Western-world dominated or is it contaminated in the assembly line by CCP inputs and influences?

It's going to have to be another measure of due diligence on my part since corporate masters don't believe in it unless it has yen (or worse) attached to it. Is your movie/song/media wrapped by China? No sale.

386 bear, if you are still here,
Trials are relatively rare in such matters because Dominion must assert as a matter of law that its evidence is likely to prevail while Powell will assert and counter file that her statements were reasonable and were not a result of malicious knowingly false statements or a reckless disregard of the truth. The judge will then issue either permission for the trial to go forward or a summary dismissal as a matter of law. A dismissal decision can then be appealed to a higher court before any trial is scheduled by either party unless they agree to proceed. And then there is bench vs. jury trial, proper jurisidiction to hear the case which is complicated in diversity cases (Dominion hq is in Denver, dunno where Powell's residence is, and so on).

Dominion must put its best foot forward in initial pleadings because it has the burden at law of meeting the threshold for a case to proceed. We will see what Powell's reply shall be but never assume from one brief how strong a case may be.

388 The villains in Chinese Communist cinema, if they are Chinese, are Taiwanese.

Posted by: Semi-Literate Thug at January 15, 2021 04:53 PM (xku86)

Don't believe Lucas' lies. The Empire was always half Rome, half Nazi Germany. Rome liked to crush rebellions to deter the others (see the razing of Corinth, Carthage, Jerusalem et al) and the Germans donated the helmets and slick uniforms.

His worlds are paper thin, and nobody has really been able to deepen them, hence the repetition of plots, villians, and stories.

Posted by: Oldcat at January 15, 2021 05:44 PM (eoQWY)

389 The sidebar link about the Lucasfilm civil war was also an interesting read. I don't follow Star Wars stuff all that closely but I'm going to ass-ume that since that giant retcon of all the third-party material that people actually liked (Admiral Thrawn books, various video games, etc.) happened at about the same time the movies started rolling out, that it was also that work of Ms. Kennedy and her SJWish harem.

393 216 Lucas changes his story every damned time someone talks to him. He's either pulling everyone's chain, is so dumb he can't remember, or just is one of those guys who lies like other people breathe.

I think George Lucas just lives inside his own head. A while back one of the superfans managed to corner him at a public event over the whole Han-shot-first thing, and his response was something along the lines of "it's my reality so I get to change it whenever I want to."
