Sohrab Amari: The Corporate-GOP Divorce Will Be Painful in the Short-Term, but Rewarding in the Long Term

I just want to get to where we can start the reckoning.

November's election revealed that the class realignment of our two parties is solidifying. Democrats have increasingly emerged as the party of upscale suburbs, of Silicon Valley and Hollywood and Wall Street, of the owners of capital and the professionals who service them. The GOP, meanwhile, is trending toward a multiracial working-class party, preferred by those who generally make their living by toil.
So why are conservatives fretting about corporate America cutting off the GOP, a process merely accelerated by last week's (disgraceful) mob assault on the Capitol? Did they think building a working-class party was going to be painless? That they could mouth pro-worker rhetoric while continuing to ignore workers' concerns on issues like immigration and wages? A country-club party with blue-collar decor?
That jig was going to be up at some point. The sooner, the better -- for an underrepresented American working class and for Republicans who take the realignment seriously.

Megacorporations using their money to strip the rights from citizens are begging citizens to strip them of their money.

Progressive corporate tax rates, for example, would be a major equalizer.

These people obviously have too much money, because they're spending billions to indoctrinate children -- a goal far outside their corporate charter -- and taking stockholder's money and setting it on fire as a tithe to their Strange New Gods of Wokeism.

Progressive corporate tax rates and a slashing of tax concessions and business expenses for media companies should help them refocus on the business of business.

We also assumed that big business was trustworthy in that we knew their goals were maximizing shareholder value. Which is better then government, where we have no idea what any individual government officials driving force is.

Now, I am not opposed to that, especially if it has the consequence of incentivizing manufacturing back here at home where it belongs. But until that happens, there is no such thing as electronics manufactured at scale that doesn't derive from oppressive foreign labor policies.

Even if you assemble the stuff here, many components are going to come from Chinese and Vietnamese factories. Your LCD panel might come from Korea or Japan, but its ribbon cable probably comes from China. It's power rectifier probably comes from China. You can build a computer whose motherboard and CPU come from the United States, but the expansion sockets, timing crystals and HDMI ports probably come from China or maybe Taiwan (and Taiwan would be okay, as compared to China).

The point is that the entire electronics supply chain is infested with parts - including *many* small and high-volume parts like sockets, cables, many integrated circuits, etc. - from the PRC and other abusive forced-labor countries. It is actually impossible right now to get electronics that *don't* use slave labor at all.

65 Problem with suggesting taxing the corporations is this:

Corporations don't pay taxes. They collect taxes on behalf of the govt. So taxing them more simply means they add that tax to the price of their goods/services and then pass that along to the govt.

Arguably since the higher taxes makes their prices higher and thus demand for the goods/services goes down at the higher price point it still can hurt them, but most prices have a decent bit of elasticity in them, so....

Taxing corporations more, even ones you don't like, isn't a good option.

The corporate tax code is structured in a way that does kind of make sense, but also makes it very easy for companies to not be profitable.

But we can't tax revenues, for obvious reasons. I don't know, I frankly think the best move would be to just throw up our hands and get rid of corporate income taxes, but that would play in to their hands, and I'm not in a play in to their hands kind of mood right now.

I think we could put punitive taxes on issuing stock options though. I'm sure they'd find a way around it, but it would freak out the C-levels at the corporations, which is really who we're after anyway.

The elasticity of the demand curve of the product is what determines who pays the tax.

For an inelastic demand curve, the consumer pays the tax. Think about cigarettes or insulin.

For an elastic demand curve, the corporation pays.

It is, if you keep buying. But that's voluntary, which taxes aren't. You could make the case that its indirect taxation more effectively on necessities, because the end consumer has to consume a certain amount of the product. But I don't see how any of that applies to Disney, candy companies, or toymakers. It's not like different industries cannot be taxed differently. And even with necessities, in a rich country like this one, we consume far more, and far more high end than necessary, so that the end consumer could still avoid some of the result of increased taxation.

Also, doesn't this assume that raising prices will reduce demand for the corporation's product? If so, since ALL corporations are facing additional corporate taxes, won't there be a "rising tide lifts all boats" aspect? ONE corporation raising prices will suffer from elastic demand, but ALL corporations doing so seems to me would not.

If all corporations raised their prices, then there would be a strong incentive to cheat, eat some of the taxes in order to lower your price, and hopefully make up the loss with an increase in customers. The end result is that everyone does it, and drives prices back down.

Most general 'principles' in economics generally have caveats and limits so they are more like rules of thumb. This is especially true in macro economics.
Just like MJ correctly brought in elastic and inelastic demand, it is also true that corporate structures of trans national corporations can affect their tax rate. One of the reasons that PDT lowered the corporate tax rate was to bring back corporations supposedly located in foreign countries. It worked kind of but then the corporations took that gift but did not want the flip side of PDT's bargain which was to put America and Americans first on trade and immigration.
The truth is, like any time in history, people with capital want cheap labor--thus, if the local market is constricted, they want labor mobility. One of the reasons that the economy struggled during the 70's aside from oil is the labor pool boomed, when it shrank in the 80's, the mass illegal immigration started.
Economics is kind of like the old Fixx song--one thing leads to another or people respond to incentives, both financial and other and avoid disincentives if possible.

Sorry, I don't find this convincing. Eating some of the taxes erodes profit margin. OK, that could be made up in volume, until and unless profit margin goes to zero, which in the limit, it would.

But OTOH, how often do corporations in a given industry all raise their prices in unison? When regulators make anti-trust noises, they claim that they were all responding to economic forces, but realistically, it's hard not to think that they saw their competitors raise prices, so they took advantage of the cover.

That taxes are passed on isn't the real issue with corporate taxes. Taxes being "passed on to consumers" is just as true if you tax labor or you tax at the capital ownership level.

1. Corporate taxes are hard to get revenue with because companies can and do devote a lot of resources to minimizing their tax burden
2. Corporate taxes are relatively distortionary in comparison to taxing capital ownership because they tend to be a lot less even in application and encourage inefficient economic decisions for the sake of minimizing taxes

Progressivity in corporate income taxes is an interesting idea from the perspective of trying to create a bias towards smaller enterprises, which would tend to have desirable social benefits.

Corporate tax revenue before the tax cuts a few years ago was less than 10% of federal revenue. It really isn't great at raising revenue. It is much easier to tax the shareholders(which is effectively what the aim is with corporate taxes anyways). Granted that's still a few hundred billion, but that leaves plenty of incentive to lobby about tax rates.
