Claim: Mitch McConnel "50/50" on Voting to Remove Trump from Office; If McConnell Votes to Remove, Trump Will Likely Be Removed

Jonathan Martin
@jmartNYT

A Senate Republican aide tells me he thinks there were about 20, give or take, Republicans who were *open* to a conviction [even before we ran our story on McConnell being open to impeachment]

...

Several GOP sources say tonight that if McConnell supports conviction, Trump almost certainly will be convicted by 67 senators in impeachment trial.

"If Mitch is a yes, he's done," said one Senate Republican who asked to be named. Many Rs are staying mum

I believe this.

Why? Because Mitch the Bitch is a piece of shit who fights GOP dissidents and insurgents more fiercely than he's ever fought his Very Good Friends in the opposite party. (Allegedly in the opposite party, I should say.)

He has bitterly fought the Tea Party for a dozen years -- while accommodating his Very Good Friends in the Democrat Party.

Yes, yes: the judges. Point taken.

But what else?

The other reason I believe that China's Man in DC is doing this is that 85% of Republicans oppose impeachment.

Which naturally makes Mitch suddenly get feisty and fight-y.

The only people he ever wants to fight are possible Republican challengers to corporatist rule.

Also worth noting: He hasn't denied it.

Correction: Marcus T says that McConnell's office has denied it.

41 Hannity called McConnell's office last night on-air. They said this was total bullshit.
Posted by: Marcus T

Re: the 85% of Republicans who oppose impeachment: 60% said Trump did nothing wrong, and the rest say that it's too late in his term to be worth the effort.

5 They have to have a trial though; in the trial, Trump's lawyers can clearly demonstrate he did not incite violence and his claims to fraud can be shown (constitutional violations alone prove it). I don't see conviction here. It will backfire on Republicans massively if they do this.

Because he'd utterly destroy the party if he does this. I highly doubt he'll change the rules without providing Trump an opportunity to defend himself. Riots will ensue if they impeach him in this way.

This idea that they have to stop Trump from somehow being elected in some way with impeachment is ludicrous. They stopped him while he was allegedly in charge of the entire operation and the justice department.

111 Hey, I figured out the GOP had become an illegitimate political party and was a useless pile of dog shit way back in 2006.

Sometimes it takes impeaching the most conservative programmatically and temperamentally President in the history of the country for some to see the light.

McConnell was a piece of shit when he was Senate Majority Whip and he's always been a snake.

Trump is going to be impeached, which will effectively kill the GOP for good.

Which is a good thing.

There are tickets to the gallery. There are visitors to the ceremonial offices. Finally, when you have no other recourse, putting the fear of God into elected officials is a good thing. Quite the opposite:

-- The Lincoln Project 's newventure involves publicly shaming and "destabilizing" corporations that donate money to Republicans.

Mitch thinks Trump is to blame in GA and for losing the whole Senate (and he's probably right, even though I also hate GOPe even more)

McConnell won't impeach trump, it would be a wipeout for him and anyone that went along in the next election. Trump could form a 3rd party and most would follow him.

The way to win is not to walk away from the GOP, but to take over the GOP.

It's always easier to do a hostile takeover than to build a new party from scratch. Trump supporters make up the vast majority of republican voters in each state, so all it takes is for Trump to lead an effort to take over the three committee positions in each state and have total control of the GOP.

Trump's political skill isn't in 4D chess, but in being able to read people and gauge the public mood. The rally was an example of that. He also thrives on chaos and on getting his opponents to overplay their hand. The storming of the Capitol may have caused him some short-term problems, but it will also cause his opponents to overreact with this impeachment, which will drive the GOP further into Trump's camp. And it exposes who the weaklings, cowards, and opportunists are on our side.

If McConnell were to vote to impeach, a Trump-backed Patriot Party could easily sweep a lot of deep red areas. People are that pissed.

McConnell is adept at talking out of both sides of his mouth. He is playing a very typical political game, to see who will bid the most, who will give him the most, to decide what he should do. Impeach or exonerate.

He, and others like him in both parties, are without a moral center. The country be damned, they will do what's right for themselves.
Pelosi is doing this to raise money for the Democrats. She is petty, vindictive, drunk half the time and getting senile, but this is all a game to raise money for the Democrats.

354 295 We thought Trump had a plan for the Left. He never did. He ran and governed on economic and trade policy he'd been talking about for 30 years. He was 100% correct about and ramrod true to these policies. But the rest, when it came to the Left, was just catch as catch can. He flailed around with erratic effectiveness as in "fake news" and "witch hunt" but never had any idea how to follow up or actually inflict damage to the Left. He was ultimately flummoxed. I'd like to think he will leave office with a blistering valediction as in Eisenhower but I'm losing hope in that

Trump was a businessman. He was used to people negotiating with him in good faith and used to people being terrified of him. He was used to winning. He also knew a lot of these people personally and had contributed money to some of them. He would try dealing with them and they would lie to him, break confidences, go behind his back, and that was just his staff. He could not find enough honest people in DC to work with him. He also thought politicians should work for the people. Too many congress people work for themselves. I don't think he could get his mind around the corruption.

The problem is, despite the fact that they were caught, none of them were charged or prosecuted, which emboldened them to commit even more crimes.

And now they're back in the White House, or will be in another week.

Yes and no. You get too illogical and inefficient, you may go out of business, provided you are not too big to fail. And the separation between politics and business is awfully thin in many cases, unless you just mean mom and pop shops, as opposed to influential and heavily regulated industries.

480 295 We thought Trump had a plan for the Left. He never did....I'd like to think he will leave office with a blistering valediction as in Eisenhower but I'm losing hope in that.
=========
I'll say it once, and I'll say it again. Trump's failures aren't his own. He depended on people he appointed to high office and whose election campaigns he supported to do the right thing and stand by him to work for the greater good of We The People. Those people have done him wrong, and prevented him from the true successes he wanted and (thus far) the second term required to make them stick. And I don't think he understood how far the Deep State truly went, and how far down his predecessor had politicized every branch of the bureaucracy. Alex Jones wasn't a madman, he was a prophet.

And Trump has excoriated the Beltway denizens more often and in stronger terms than Eisenhower ever did. Ike issued the warning, but his party and supporters didn't believe him. It's been 60 years now, and I believe and love the old man for the warning. But we put the warning aside, and we have our reward.

494 An interesting question posed earlier today got me thinking: When did the original patriots know when it was time to go to war with the British.

I think it's trying to compare apples and oranges. The original patriots didn't have to deal with an electronic surveillance system that can track everyone's movements. That alone would probably have stopped most of them in their tracks.

Plus they didn't have huge LE agencies infiltrating their groups like we have now. There were spies, yes. But nothing like what this fed government has now.

Given that, the chances of a revolution would have been greatly reduced.

Psychologically, we need a lot of practice in not being affected by the lies.

Henry et al were convinced in their own righteousness and that their cause was righteous and justified, and would ultimately benefit the inhabitants of their colonies-cum-states. King George's ministers were wrong, their policies were wrong, and would cause the Colonies to take the wrong course, end of story. They were able to bring the moderates and non-Loyalist conservative money men along with them through conviction, example, and by winning! The Loyalists were ultimately just the opposition to be put aside when they chose to be enemies of the newborn USA instead of just opposed voters.

553 499 An interesting question posed earlier today got me thinking: When did the original patriots know when it was time to go to war with the British.

I think it's trying to compare apples and oranges. The original patriots didn't have to deal with an electronic surveillance system that can track everyone's movements. That alone would probably have stopped most of them in their tracks.
=======
Not really. In Boston and most of Massachusetts both Loyalists and Patriots knew each other by name and sight. Many of them had known each other from business, legal, and political occasions. there was no secrecy, save only for the "direct action" movements of the Sons Of Liberty and the Committee of Correspondence. It was the same in other places. George Washington, Horatio Gates, and Thomas Gage had all served together under General Braddock in the French and Indian War. But the Patriots knew what would happen if they didn't act: they had Ireland and the Scottish Highlands as the example of what to expect.

2. You raise an interesting point. In the Communist countries, the General Secretary or Party Chairman often doesn't have any official position in the government, because everything is decided by the Party and the government is just a rubber stamp. I doubt that we would ever descend to that level, but an RNC Chairman Trump could reinvigorate the role of the party.

619 Go ahead Mitch. The GOP will cease to exist as the voting base sends you flaming to unemployment. The GOP already f-d this election up ROYALLY by rolling over on mailin-fraud. You think the Dems are going to give up mailin voting now?

LOL, Good luck. You screwed up the mid-terms with ballot harvesting as well. You didn't see THAT as a GD warning?

When they start trying to ban and confiscate guns the nation will fracture and NO ONE in the GOP is going to have any part of it.

620 I still get pissed when I think about Adam Schiff bastardizing the phone call to the President of Ukraine and calling it parody. That so called parody was the basis for the last impeachment FFS. If that did not open American eyes to the level of deceit and coordinated propaganda these scumbags are capable of, I thought nothing will. Perhaps this will. It is fucking obvious.

621 '"The violence" was limited to a tiny number of people who (as I noted above) will turn out to have had zero connection to the rally or Trump,'

Here's the people I'd like to see prosecuted: the cop who shot the lady, the a-holes beating the cop with staves outside, anybody who looted anything, the cretin(s) who smeared shit around, the guys with the zip-ties, and the window breakers. That would do it for me I think.

626 It's interesting how the speed (or lack thereof) of special prosecutors' investigations contributed to America's volatile tempers today.

The Mueller team could have prevented much of the current animosity with an easily quick finding of no collusion and placing blame on the illegal spying, lying and the dishonest Steele dossier.

Durham could have had findings and indictments by now, but it's also possible the case is so complicated it needs time. Yet now his team works as all the suspects take power, adding to the angry mood of dangerous suspicions.

627 The bottom line is that we don't make anything painful for the Left. They kick us in the nuts and teeth day after day and we do nothing. Something deeply wrong and masochistic going on.

I'm leaning toward the "Trump as kingmaker" option. Have the next RNC elect Trump's choice as the chairman -- maybe Don Jr? President Trump can run things from Palm Beach while Don Jr does the grunt work of actually administering the party apparatus.

639 "Yes, yes: the judges. Point taken."

Given the history or Republican nominees that the Democrats fought tooth and nail who then turned out to be not merely squishy RINO lemons but outright Politicons (more than meets the eye - proggies in disguise!) (aka, John Roberts), just how sure can we really be about the libertarian (Koch Brother, Justin Amash, et al) infiltrated Federalist Society approved judges, no matter how "cocaine" Mitch went to confirm them, particularly how much the Democrats whined about it?

I say bullshit! until these judges show me some spine. Since the fraudulent selection on November 3rd, I haven't been given any confidence that these vaunted conservative judges is/will do anything for us.
I predict we will hear the phrase: "What happened to all those conservative judges Trump got appointed?" before the end of the year, heck mid-year.
