Speaking of "phoneless", I was called upon yesterday to take my neighbor in to the hospital (the emergency room is closed). I had to sit outdoors (no visitors in the hospital), and the sun interfered with reading on my phone. So I just sat in the sun near the ambulance staging area (real people doing real things) and watched the little birds. Sparrows, mostly, but a hummingbird also approached me. Can't say that it wasn't nice.

Maybe I have been in information overload lately.

I think Muldoon said this in the comments to a previous thread:

When the word 'freedom' no longer means individual liberty to live life, but rather 'freedom from fear and want' you get socialism.

VDH and the Left's "re-education" plans

Victor Davis Hanson wrote a farewell at the end of 2020 to a regular column for National Review which was edited by National Review. Can't locate it right now. Maybe it's in their "Plus" content, which I don't deliberately access. They are still putting up content from him, but apparently not edited by National Review. They are still posting VDH podcasts. Saw a note that they set him up by dropping a bunch of anti-Trump statements in his lap after the Capitol Hill incident.

Anyway, here he is talking with someone who is not on staff at National Review. As the video begins, we hear more evidence that Rick Wilson is absolutely crackers. Not that we didn't already know that.

VDH manages to maintain a calm tone in the face of the insanity. He seems to recommend facing the challenges rather than ignoring them. Is some kind of balance appropriate?

Surviving the Tech Purges

The Mises Institute has apparently been either paranoid or prepared for a long time:

For many years...the calls to control and chill online content have grown louder. We have monitored those calls, and taken proactive and incremental steps to safeguard our various channels. Today the environment for free and open communication--a hallmark of liberal societies--is in deep trouble. At this point the debate over 'private companies' and deplatforming is almost moot. What's needed is action, direction, and innovation by people of goodwill, regardless of political stripe.

Steps they have taken are described.

3 I watched the documentary The Rise of Dr. Jordan Peterson on Amazon last night. Was surprised that it was as honest and positive as it was.
His search for meaning underlying surface craziness was very calming. I haven't visited his site for a while but I shall return today.

Was it "only" three protesters? Did the cop really die? Where's the video of him being hit on the head? Amazing blackouts on all this. Before Jan. 6, such blackout was not possible. Now, it's routine.

About 99.9%. If I spend more than about 30 seconds thinking about current political events, I become nauseous.

One of the things I've been doing to decompress and relax nowadays is getting B'Gal squared away for a while then donning the headphones and listening to classical music on EweTewb. It has helped me immensely. I have to tune all the rest of the bullshit out for my own mental health, what little there is of it left after the previous year that is. As for positive action, I've sorta been looking around (listening,
akshully) for some classical music to try to produce a rock or prog-rock
version and I think I may have found one last night by accident. Bach's BWV1053. Has a passage in it that shocked me in it's heaviness and would lend itself to what I have in mind. Plus, it's already written, I just have to arrange it and play the tracks.

At one time I had 4 people in my circle of friends with the same birthday, me being the 5th. Me, the drummer in a band I was in at the time, and 3 friends, 2 of which were from my neighborhood. The birthday parties were...epic.

I'm not talking about teevee, I mean everywhere else. They tried telling us Kyle Rittenhouse gunned down three innocent people. Then we saw the video.

Or to look at it from another angle, when they say this substance or that substance is addictive, that's kind of not correct.

What IS more accurate is to say the human brain is an addiction creating machine, and if you introduce something/anything the right (i.e. wrong) way, that brain is going to become addicted to it.

So yeah, little dopamine hits people get when their phones go off? That's the brain doing what brains do naturally... becoming addicted to it.

McDonald's coffee is a great value, and while mostly Brazil beans and a little Colombian, they sell so much of it, it doesn't have time for the grounds to turn stale.

True, not every prayer is answered. God does give everybody the opportunity to repent and accept His grace. I'm doing my bit by reading Catholic doctrine so that I can understand it more deeply. I carry a full on trauma kit. My sainted mother was an ER nurse for 30 years and then taught trauma nursing at Deaconess Hospital's school of Nursing until they closed it down 8 years later. She was a patient and down to earth teacher. Carry at least some of the basic tools, keep your head, do something. Made up 2 trauma kits this Christmas and gave them to my son and SIL.

It's amazing how, if you look at different animal societies, each specie appears to have its own formula that works. Lions for example, are territorial, with females doing most of the hunting, while males patrol and kill intruders. It's a short life for males, with the females carrying on, even after the dominant males are killed and replaced (with the replacement males killing all the young, so the females can go back into heat and have THEIR offspring), the females accept the new males, more or less, right away.

But if you look at hyena clans, the dynamics are VERY different. With a matriarchal system, males are the lowest members, basically just there to procreate.

You can't force one species to adopt the ways of another specie. It would basically mean death for all. Like humanity seems to be trying to do.

Yes, but every available military unit in Washington had been mobilized and sent up to Meade to bolster his forces, so the city was suddenly left virtually undefended, with no combat ready units nearby. It was an incredible gamble that Lincoln got away with.

I've had friends who've worked in the DA's office. Even at the county level (especially?) they've all told me that it's just a short term job, that eventually you either run for office or get fired, since sooner a later a new guy will come in who fires everyone and puts in his own people.

which is why assistant DA's who are smart put a lot of effort into making friends with all the local law firms that they deal with. That's where the golden parachutes are.

Related, there were reports yesterday, that our troop levels in Iraq and Afghanistan are the lowest they've been since the beginning of all this stuff. I think they said 2500 in Afghanistan. Presumably a comparable number in Iraq.

No, that's a myth. It's not that they can smell it, it's that they have a primitive, but very effective way to calculate these things, and they can tell, even without having to know the actual math, that the baby born today, had been conceived during the week when they were on a business trip.

I read the WWII/aliens one(s). The premise was neat -- the aliens' culture progressed at a steady snail's pace, so when they visited Earth in medieval times, they expected humanity to be at that technological level for a long, long time. They return in the 1940's, there's mechanized warfare and atomic bombs! Not gonna be as easy as they thought.

I like Turtledove's writing but he doesn't know when to stop a series.

My mother was PISSED the day my Dad bought one. Wouldn't touch it for more than a week. When she realized it made her life easier for reheating food she previously cooked, she embraced it. It is amazing. At the start he said he wrote "western" fiction so the use of "white hat" made sense from that perspective, as was his plot lines for what he put forth as likely scenarios, none of which was accurate. For someone who professed a distaste for the state, he really put a lot of faith in its personnel. I wonder if he will return to trying to make a living in honest fiction rather than political fiction sold as real.

Yeah Dylan hates protesters and treats his oldest fans with barely-veiled contempt. He is a poet, he doesn't give a crap about causes very often but just what he can do with words and music. he experiments a lot, like writing an entire song in one sitting cold, just try to make something up without any previous ideas.

One of his better crafted songs "Hurricane" he regrets and no longer performs because it was all based on a series of abject lies and he learned about it later.

397 Why would morale at the FBI be low? It's a fairly large organization, and not homogeneous, as well as spread out geographically and facing quite different situations in some regions. As usual I think morale would be linked to management and specific situations in particular field offices.

Border Patrol, now there's a candidate for bad morale, even dread, right now. I know there was quite a bit of angst at the field level just before Trump was shockingly elected, one officer memorable said "if something doesn't happen in November, I don't what I'm gonna do". This week should have a chance to gauge how things stand, but can't imagine there's much joy in that Mudville.

I also try to include devotions from Jewish sources as well as the Christians ones and say "If anyone is Jewish here" I encourage them to post scripture that is meaningful to them. One poster said he wanted to believe in God, and I posted a thing about drawing near to God by the guy who' s an evangelical Christian and has written on Wilberforce and Bonhoeffer-and I asked if Jewish folks here had a video and someone posted a video of a Rabbi talking about that subject.

413 I got laid off in mid 2020. I took time to evaluate my position, what I had and had not accomplished in my time in the Midwest, and what I thought of that region's future w.r.t. stability and ability/willingness to care about personal freedom.

My conclusion was that the Midwest is not in fact a viable region, so I moved back to Tennessee. Less tech jobs will not make for an easy path, but it's definitely a better situation for my sanity and long term prospects. There's still restaurants here, and the governor isn't breathing down my neck every morning and telling me what I'm graciously allowed to do today.

I'm agnostic and my general take on it is that it's fine as long as the content in question is not in and of itself overtly patronizing or belligerent ("convert or be damned forever!", "all shall grovel before the might of the gods and their temples", etc.) or becomes the primary subject of discussion across many threads.

Would you have ignored the PDT tweets about having "no AG" and assumed on your own that he really thought Sessions was trustworthy and fine despite his own statements to the contrary?

IMO people would have been angry that the President was being constrained from taking decisive action and would have given the GOPe hell.

that might be true for the more hard core Q types, idk. But many that came out of that initial movement became their own YouTube sites, exposing many things.

Of course many here got down on Coulter for going against Trump, or for confronting him on appointing DeepState types that were against his promised agenda. So it is hard to say who was most "asleep", or if it was better to have raucous support for Trump (as seen at his rallies). Mostly I think Q anon types saw the obstruction of Trump as DeepState, including on the Repub side. I didn't read "Q drops" but I think he/they encouraged people to be "proactive" ... including writing letters ... but idk, maybe some other group was more active?

One day, I was working as an usher at a Bruce Springsteen show at the L.A. Sports Arena (I think that was it) near the USC campus I was at. After class I had time for either a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (which would be my dinner) or go to the store to buy my 5 lotto tickets. Since I was going to have gone hours without any food, I did the smart thing and had the sandwich. 4 of my numbers came up and I would have won $75. Most expensive sandwich I've ever had.
