There are more things, Lucilius, that frighten us than injure us,Speaking of "phoneless", I was called upon yesterday to take my neighbor in to the hospital (the emergency room is closed). I had to sit outdoors (no visitors in the hospital), and the sun interfered with reading on my phone. So I just sat in the sun near the ambulance staging area (real people doing real things) and watched the little birds. Sparrows, mostly, but a hummingbird also approached me. Can't say that it wasn't nice. Maybe I have been in information overload lately. I think Muldoon said this in the comments to a previous thread: So when FDR said "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself", he wasn't saying 'be brave', he was saying 'WE will provide and protect'. When the word 'freedom' no longer means individual liberty to live life, but rather 'freedom from fear and want' you get socialism. VDH and the Left's "re-education" plans Victor Davis Hanson wrote a farewell at the end of 2020 to a regular column for National Review which was edited by National Review. Can't locate it right now. Maybe it's in their "Plus" content, which I don't deliberately access. They are still putting up content from him, but apparently not edited by National Review. They are still posting VDH podcasts. Saw a note that they set him up by dropping a bunch of anti-Trump statements in his lap after the Capitol Hill incident. Anyway, here he is talking with someone who is not on staff at National Review. As the video begins, we hear more evidence that Rick Wilson is absolutely crackers. Not that we didn't already know that. VDH manages to maintain a calm tone in the face of the insanity. He seems to recommend facing the challenges rather than ignoring them. Is some kind of balance appropriate? For many years...the calls to control and chill online content have grown louder. We have monitored those calls, and taken proactive and incremental steps to safeguard our various channels. Today the environment for free and open communication--a hallmark of liberal societies--is in deep trouble. At this point the debate over 'private companies' and deplatforming is almost moot. What's needed is action, direction, and innovation by people of goodwill, regardless of political stripe.Steps they have taken are described. How much of the current craziness are you letting pass you by? Taking any actions to deal with some of it? Hope you have a good weekend. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

They always accuse us of what they are doing. Rick Wilson says people are afraid Trump supporters will come and kill/terrorize them "if you don't agree with everything he says".
Well gee, the Karens of the left are terrible enough, but the Antifa BLM mob are real threats to people like Tucker or any of prominence. And any working a professional job have to be careful about being a "climate denier" or showing any Trump support. That NEVER happens the other way around. (but we al know that ... The fight needs to be fiscal economic. If you're still using social media. If you still pay for a major league sports package. If you still have cable television. If you don't activity look for alternatives before purchasing on Amazon. You're a part of the problem. 40 - 70 million people need to financially need to opt out.

How much of the current craziness are you letting pass you by? Taking any actions to deal with some of it?
About 99.9%. If I spend more than about 30 seconds thinking about current political events, I become nauseous. One of the things I've been doing to decompress and relax nowadays is getting B'Gal squared away for a while then donning the headphones and listening to classical music on EweTewb. It has helped me immensely. I have to tune all the rest of the bullshit out for my own mental health, what little there is of it left after the previous year that is. As for positive action, I've sorta been looking around (listening, akshully) for some classical music to try to produce a rock or prog-rock version and I think I may have found one last night by accident. Bach's BWV1053. Has a passage in it that shocked me in it's heaviness and would lend itself to what I have in mind. Plus, it's already written, I just have to arrange it and play the tracks. If you have a set of a million people how many might you expect to die within a 12 hr period?
Assuming life expectancy of 100 years (which is silly high, but I want a low estimate), in a million people, you expect 10,000 to die in a given year, 25 on a given day, and 12 in a given 12 hour period. Because my divisors are high estimates, most of the time, you'll get more than 12. Posted by: Methos at January 16, 2021 11:44 AM (kOpft) 49

What IS more accurate is to say the human brain is an addiction creating machine, and if you introduce something/anything the right (i.e. wrong) way, that brain is going to become addicted to it. So yeah, little dopamine hits people get when their phones go off? That's the brain doing what brains do naturally... becoming addicted to it. There is a lawyer on YouTube who breaks down the law and is pretty interesting. Cant remember his name right now. He talked about if legally Trump could be held responsible for inciting a riot. His conclusion after discussing several Scotus and appeals court decisions over the past 50 years is no, what Trump said is protected speech. And this guy is a leftie through and through but always looks at things strictly by what the law says. Why cant someone like that be on scotus???

When we moved to the boonies 3 years ago we had to acclimate ourselves to only accessing the internet, as I'm doing now, via a tethered mobile hotspot. Once we use up our carrier's 4G 15GB limit we get throttled to modem speeds, 56kb/second. We're talking '90's speed via phone line. So we've been busy with tasks, upgrades and updates to our 'new' home. Don't miss too much of the razz-ma-tazz of daily terror from the news, et al. The vast array of wildlife is better viewing than the local news channels on teewee. I'm in the process of re-imagining my PC's software to be better anonymous online. Never twitted. Have always grown veggies and nuts. So as we dig in for the lib onslaught we're probably going to be o.k. for a while. I guess the next election or two will be just as interesting as the last three.

Or to look at it from another angle, when they say this substance or that substance is addictive, that's kind of not correct.
Agreed. They had a study recently showing that negative emotions could be spread around on socialist media in a manner that resembled the spread of real-world diseases. And if you've never heard the interviews from the people who designed Stan's Own Cell Phone about what it's designed to do to the brain (in the manner you describe), I recommend it. The more feminine a society becomes, the less liberty it can tolerate.
Posted by: Tom Servo at January 16, 2021 12:17 PM (V2Yro) It's amazing how, if you look at different animal societies, each specie appears to have its own formula that works. Lions for example, are territorial, with females doing most of the hunting, while males patrol and kill intruders. It's a short life for males, with the females carrying on, even after the dominant males are killed and replaced (with the replacement males killing all the young, so the females can go back into heat and have THEIR offspring), the females accept the new males, more or less, right away. But if you look at hyena clans, the dynamics are VERY different. With a matriarchal system, males are the lowest members, basically just there to procreate. You can't force one species to adopt the ways of another specie. It would basically mean death for all. Like humanity seems to be trying to do. "For security and regulatory reasons, we may further limit the number, type or dollar amount of transactions you may make using your Card account or suspend the use of your Card account and/ or Card. We reserve the right to revise the Fee Schedule from time to time, and will notify you accordingly. You acknowledge that by maintaining a Card account and/or continuing to use the Services after such notification, you are thereby agreeing to any such revisions to the fees." Does this sound like the Goverment can cut me off If they see me as a security risk or I use the card for something they don't like (i.e. ammunition)? My activation is my agreement to these conditions. I would think I'm being paranoid, but after the events of the last 4 months, maybe not... The founding fathers were willing to sacrifice their "lives, fortunes and sacred honor" for the liberty they sought. They rightfully understood they would be hung if the revolution failed and proceeded. I always differentiate liberty and freedom. A man paroled from prison is free, but probably has limited liberty; where he lives, with whom he associates, etc. I've been thinking about a back window sticker for my pickup that is only LFSH.

It's not that they can smell it, it's that they have a primitive, but very effective way to calculate these things, and they can tell, even without having to know the actual math, that the baby born today, had been conceived during the week when they were on a business trip. Then Harry Turtledove wrote an entire series of books based on alternative histories, which got kind of strange once the aliens showed up.
Posted by: Tom Servo at January 16, 2021 12:34 PM (V2Yro) --- I read the WWII/aliens one(s). The premise was neat -- the aliens' culture progressed at a steady snail's pace, so when they visited Earth in medieval times, they expected humanity to be at that technological level for a long, long time. They return in the 1940's, there's mechanized warfare and atomic bombs! Not gonna be as easy as they thought. I like Turtledove's writing but he doesn't know when to stop a series. I always thought that was Dylan saying to himself "I'm gonna write a protest song cause they're really hot right now." You'll notice that "Times" can appeal to both left and right as prophetic. In other words, I think what Bob was looking for was a good song to sing at the folk festival. If you asked him what the song was actually about he probably couldn't tell you. Joni Mitchell or some other contempory said everything about him was made up, including his voice.

I always thought that was Dylan saying to himself "I'm gonna write a protest song cause they're really hot right now."
Yeah Dylan hates protesters and treats his oldest fans with barely-veiled contempt. He is a poet, he doesn't give a crap about causes very often but just what he can do with words and music. he experiments a lot, like writing an entire song in one sitting cold, just try to make something up without any previous ideas. One of his better crafted songs "Hurricane" he regrets and no longer performs because it was all based on a series of abject lies and he learned about it later. I am strongly inclined to post not the usual banter and interaction but simply theological and Biblical stuff to uplift, encourage, and admonish everyone. The gospel, and the word of God, to help us all focus on the truth and what matters most as things get harder and harder.
I mean, what is going to mean more if it gets as bad as we fear: more goofy jokes and movie discussions, or the word of God in our hearts to give us peace and hope? But I wonder if that might come across as insulting, patronizing, and even offensive because not everyone here is actually Christian. Probably most are not. Why would morale at the FBI be low? It's a fairly large organization, and not homogeneous, as well as spread out geographically and facing quite different situations in some regions. As usual I think morale would be linked to management and specific situations in particular field offices.
Border Patrol, now there's a candidate for bad morale, even dread, right now. I know there was quite a bit of angst at the field level just before Trump was shockingly elected, one officer memorable said "if something doesn't happen in November, I don't what I'm gonna do". Seriously, this was the scheme Lenin enacted to calm down the restive population following the bolshevik revolution. One poster said he wanted to believe in God, and I posted a thing about drawing near to God by the guy who' s an evangelical Christian and has written on Wilberforce and Bonhoeffer-and I asked if Jewish folks here had a video and someone posted a video of a Rabbi talking about that subject. I went to listen to an FBI panel at a book conference about three years ago, with five young men who could answer questions about the different divisions and how they did their work, so as to be helpful to authors. I got laid off in mid 2020. I took time to evaluate my position, what I had and had not accomplished in my time in the Midwest, and what I thought of that region's future w.r.t. stability and ability/willingness to care about personal freedom.
My conclusion was that the Midwest is not in fact a viable region, so I moved back to Tennessee. Less tech jobs will not make for an easy path, but it's definitely a better situation for my sanity and long term prospects. There's still restaurants here, and the governor isn't breathing down my neck every morning and telling me what I'm graciously allowed to do today. They were more active than most Republicans ... so I don't buy that they were put to sleep. imo Q himself (themselves) were just playing along with what are know "conspiracy theories" (many are real). ---DeepState finally had to label Q-anon as a white supremacist thing, because it was a group that acted in unison ... along with 4-chan types, to get things trending. That sort of activism is a problem for them (as when hillary had to deal with Pepe). ... idk, DeepState plant to divert people? there were for sure many that glommed on and pretended, like those fakes in the White House "riot".

"The Mises Institute has apparently been either paranoid or prepared for a long time:"
You quoted the wrong passage. This is the one you want: "We have always been proudly radical: antistate, antiwar, revisionist, pro-property, pro-markets, and pro-secession, across decades and regardless of which politicians held power. We have always been willing to consider the possibility of a fully private society." The Mises Institute has been actively working for this - the collapse of the country - for a long time, and now they believe they are on the verge of achieving their goal, and so they are implementing their plan to maintain a private power base. And note who these people are: "Jeff Deist is president of the Mises Institute. He previously worked as chief of staff to Congressman Ron Paul, and as an attorney for private equity clients." that might be true for the more hard core Q types, idk. But many that came out of that initial movement became their own YouTube sites, exposing many things. Of course many here got down on Coulter for going against Trump, or for confronting him on appointing DeepState types that were against his promised agenda. So it is hard to say who was most "asleep", or if it was better to have raucous support for Trump (as seen at his rallies). Mostly I think Q anon types saw the obstruction of Trump as DeepState, including on the Repub side.
