The Vaccine! Another Perspective

It is important to separate the science and biomedical research behind the Wuhan Flu (Covid-19) vaccine from the political ramifications of its use. I am confident of the research that went into it, I am confident of the studies supporting its safety and efficacy, and I am probably going to get it...eventually.

I think most of the non-political arguments against it are arrant nonsense, borne of an understandable suspicion of government and large industry, neither of which have covered themselves in glory recently. But facts are facts, and when thel arguments against it are based on ridiculous and embarrassing ignorance of the basic science behind mRNA vaccines and wholly unfounded suggestions of nefarious doings, we need to return to those facts.

At its simplest, mRNA is a xerox copy of a piece of DNA that corresponds to a protein. The mRNA goes to a cellular organelle called a ribosome, where the code for that protein is read and then the protein is produced. And then the mRNA degrades into its constituent parts. It is chemically distinct from DNA and there is no sane pathway for it to enter the genome. This is high school biology level. Nothing complicated. Certainly nothing new. And mRNA vaccines are the future, in part because they can be created so quickly. Just think about the scramble to make the flu vaccine every year. It's a guessing game about which flu strains will emerge, then a frantic push to make enough of it for the world. mRNA vaccines are more straightforward to make and as we have just seen, pharma can make a lot of them in a very short time.

But political arguments against personal use of the vaccine are another thing entirely. While I disagree with this gentleman's suspicion of the approval process, his points are rational and should be taken seriously.

I believe that widespread immunity to COVID would be a good thing, if only to reduce the death rate among elderly people and other groups with special risks. I also believe that COVID would make me quite ill if I got it, although all of the data show that I would almost certainly survive it and make a full recovery. While I am greatly concerned about the willingness of governments across the country to enforce legally-questionable requirements like mask mandates and business closures, I personally don’t have any problem with wearing a mask (except mild annoyance at how it fogs up my glasses). I am happy that an effective vaccine has been developed, and I am proud that (as with so many great scientific breakthroughs) it was largely American ingenuity and drive that produced it. I do not believe that taking the vaccine entails any significant side effects, and I’m not with the crazies who think that Bill Gates is using it as a means to microchip us.
Nevertheless, I will not be getting the vaccine. To me, rejecting the vaccine is an affirmation of reason at a moment when reason is suffering a great deal of abuse.

It's a relatively long article, but certainly worth a read. As I said, I disagree with him, but he is making an informed decision based on his political and cultural analysis of the issue.

And then it gets really good, because he skewers the increasing tendency of America to be afraid of all risks, no matter how trivial and manageable.

Our response to COVID-19 is one example of a disturbing trend some have called safetyism: the idea that all of the inherent risks that life entails must be reduced, that state power must be mobilized to mitigate those risks, and that any intervention that reduces those risks to any degree is justified.

Let's be honest...the actions of government to minimize these risks are not predicated on concern for our welfare. It serves two purposes; to create a climate of fear among the people so they clamor for government intervention; and perhaps more important, the universal desire of those in power to exercise that power.

Have no idea what the basis was - one could hope it would be along the lines of "FFS, the mortality for this is almost entirely for fragile people over 65, do ALL of them first, then come back to me".

25 One of the problems with politicizing "Science" is it is hard to discern which "set of facts" are the right ones, even for moderately "sciency" people. I have seen a bunch of scientists in the field (I guess, didn't really check their credentials) ... say the vaccine was developed way too quickly to be deemed "safe".

Still, it is maybe safer than the shut down, but now they say it does not cure "shut down", they still want to keep that punishment on the populace in effect. I'll wait a year and see what develops ... but I'm pretty healthy and isolated, so no big deal.

She finally decided to/ got the shot and now she came down with covid, and it was proven with a positive covid test.

This. had a flu vaccine 5 years apart back in the day. Talked into it both times by the nurse at work. Both times, a week later I got sick enough I thought I'd die. Haven't had it since and I worked in schools where everyone got sick. Becuse they're petri dishes. No thanks.

47 I have never received a flu vaccine with the intention of getting it once I became a senior citizen which is right around the corner. That said I am not in opposition of any vaccines but just in favor my own immune system for those relatively low lethal diseases. I never thought that the Covid vaccine would prevent one from contracting Covid more than 50% but that it would reduce the symptoms that would allow the survivability to greatly increase. That's a win in my book.

48 Yesterday I went skiing. I cannot remember the last time I saw the parking lot that full. The bar was packed with people. The rule in the bar is wear a mask walking in or out but no masks while at the tables. Which is hilarious but what the hell keep the county health Karens happy. Normal Saturday on the mountain.

This afternoon one of my kids has a dance thing. There are some restrictions like only 2 family members are allowed in the audience per dancer. And you have to wear a mask if you attend. But still the even is happening as scheduled.

Life is just going on more or less normally. Despite the local MSM best effort to still scare the shit out of everyone.

My own inclination at this point is to not get the vaccine, but not for political reasons and not out of paranoia that the mRNA type vaccine will "alter my genetic makeup" or "render me sterile". My rationale for not getting the vaccine is that I worked for 30+ years in Pediatric medicine, constantly exposed to every respiratory virus that was circulating in town. Early in my career I had frequent colds or flu-like illnesses, certainly including coronavirus strains. The latter half of my career I rarely got sick. My immune system has been challenged and responded and is demonstrably robust, so having the disease would have low risk of mortality and probably would give a longer-lasting immune response than the vaccine.
That being said, the further out into retirement I get, I would expect immune memory to fade and the need to induce a booster effect might be useful. I got the shingles vaccine for that reason.
Older folks and those with immune weaknesses or co-existing illnesses would be a better target population for the vaccine. Declining the vaccine for safety concerns minus any other elements of the risk-reward calculus is not a well-founded position.

Assessing the relative risk of things is extraordinarily difficult for many people. I wear a safety belt when I drive because the risk may be slight, but the mitigation of that risk is stupidly easy.

Fitness and diet are excellent ways to mitigate a substantial health risk, but can be a sort of pain in the ass, and require some dedication But compared to the risk of injury or death in an automobile accident? Far more important!

69 i got the first dose of the Moderna vaccine. Next one is in about two weeks.
no issues aside from my shoulder ached for a day afterward- just slightly.
the shot itself was easier taking than the flu shot- barely felt it. i have numerous co-workers who have taken it as well.

I'll say this- i have friends who have had the rona and their reactions have been all over the board. my boss got it the worst- lost his sense of smell and taste for over 5 weeks; exhausted, lethargic, no appetite.

I get it that its a "new" mRNA but at the same time they have been studying this for a while. So, you have to weigh the benefits of potential lung and heart scarring vs. the vaccine not working, working as designed, or some other potential side effect.

It's a personal choice- and I will respect any member of the Horde's choice to get it or not. AS the libs say, your body, your choice.
Of course, we shall see how that adage plays out under a Biden Admin. Methinks it won't be as cut and dry as that.

I could go on, but I do not trust anything they say anymore.

89 I was classified as 1B and the vaccine became available to me last Monday. I got my shot on Thursday. It took ten minutes and everything is fine.

Will it really change anything? Obviously that's unknowable to some degree. At some point you have to, as they say, trust the science. I have prostate cancer and a somewhat compromised immune system (low white cell count) and so I took the shot, primarily because I don't want Covid on top of that.

But I can authoritatively report that I didn't grow a tail or become paralyzed or whatever the hell people are afraid of.

It's like a flu shot or any other booster, except you need a follow up.

My dad most likely could get on a list to get vaccinated sooner but he hasn't even renewed his pneumonia vaccine in over 10 years and doesn't get flu shots, nor control his blood sugar very well. Well he's been a grown man for well over 50 years, I'm not going to try to tell him what to do.

My work is just computer stuff, we started WFH mar 2020 and they will not expand the 15% building occupancy (does not include me any day of a month) until at least the end of March 2021. So I'm very low risk for exposure and I think I'm young and healthy enough to be low risk if I would get the virus. There wont be vaccines available for my group until mid to late summer and I'll probably pass until mid to late fall because I don't want to deal with any vaccine reaction putting a crimp in summer fun. But I might get vaccinated then, because I'd rather not get laid low for 2-3 weeks which would be likely for me. If enough folks were panicked by the FNM to where herd immunity is likely at that point then its a no brainer to just skip.

132 I am acquainted with 4 people who work at Spokane's largest hospital. One is a microbiologists and two are RN's. None of them are eager to get the vaccine. According to several of them, that attitude is prevalent among their co workers. The political manipulation of the virus has muted my interest in looking at the science end of things. I stand by her immunity. After I retired, I spent 6 years as a school custodian, working around 120 little biological terrorists. Never got the flu vaccine. I'm relatively convinced I had the C19 in February even though the test came back negative. I was pretty dang sick. So be it. Probably not the last time in my lifetime. One of these they'll find me with a smile on my face hopefully. I have more fear regarding ticking off my wife than I do about how God decides He's going to take this old body of mine away from me.

You have to take the booster within three weeks +/- four days for maximum efficacy. It's been several days now and I don't feel any side effects.

Not everyone (most people, I guess) has secondary issues that would compel them to not take the shot, and if they choose not to I can certainly respect that decision given the politicization of the pandemic.

I posted my concerns on DDG here back in October, when their search results were just as messed up as goolag when it came to autofilling (or not) queries.

Brave uses Chrome as its browser engine, so you're not escaping goolag entirely by using them. To change your search engine default or add Mojeek to the list, simply right click in your address bar, and select "manage search engines". There you just paste the Mojeek URL in, add keyword and then paste URL again for query. Done!

BTW, Qwant is one of the default search engines in Brave, seems to be ok so far. I haven't played with Siik much yet.

These are genuine questions, not snark, I promise. I have a friend who is a nurse in a large Northeastern hospital that has been treating Covid patients since they first appeared in the US. As of right now, the hospital is still making medical staff take the flu vaccine, but the Covid vaccine is optional. If the flu vaccine is notably iffy each year, but the Covid vaccine is 95% effective, why aren't they mandating it, I wonder?

I used to think that having the flu was like have a slightly worse cold. I then actually got the flu once and found out how far my head was up my own ass for thinking that. Like my friend, I didn't die (as far as *you* know, mwuh ha ha) but I don't recommend the experience. In fact, I made sure to get the flu vaccine for almost a decade afterwards to make what I could to ensure that *I* didn't go throw that experience again.
Dunno if I'll take the wuflu vaccine any time soon.

Any time I see "95%" attached to things, I assume it's the basic confidence interval in research, and NOT anything about something being 95% safe or effective or whatever.

Basic statistics. You measure, and if your numbers work out a certain way, you consider 95% C.I. as conclusive, but if you're really wanting to be confidence, you go for 99%.

It's another way of saying "nothing's certain," but we're going to say this is almost certainly the result of whatever we're measuring.

And then people say "it's 95% effective," when no, that's not what was concluded.

I'm not sure but if I were to guess I would think that if you've been working in a "frontline" healthcare position (ER, ICU, COVIC ward) as a doctor, nurse, respiratory therapist, etc. during the past 11 months, it is almost a certainty that you have been exposed to the virus in its native form. That would be my rationale. An antibody test might help sort that out (or not)

Days AFTER she took the vaccine ( I do not know which vaxx. ) she came down with hinky, covid symptoms. Her boss dr said, "Oh, it's just a response to the vaxx.' She works with covid patients and didn't think her symptoms were basic vaxx reactions. One symptom? She couldn't get out of bed for an entire day. Nephew came down with similar symptoms 24 hours after she showed symptoms, but he had added joint pain. They were both then tested and both tested positive.

Oh, and the local school board wants their kids, who were all subsequently tested and tested negative, to quarantine for 24 days.

Yeah. Not ten, not 14. 24.

That's a good thought, but here's something funny about that. Back in the summer this same nurse friend said that the hospital wouldn't give any of them an antibody test because they were afraid too many would come back positive, which I guess would lead to a questioning of their safety practices.

1) Stop testing (what the Obama/Biden admin did)
2) Reduce the cycle count to something reasonable.
3) Quit using PCR tests for what they were not designed to do.
4) Use a better PCR test that has better selectivity.
5) Use a better PCR test that has better sensitivity.

Question, since we are in the same county: if a child has had a disease like measles (probably would have to be an immigrant), does the county still require a vaccination? You do realize that a Premillennial view of Revelation, particularly of the Dispensational bent is relatively new and almost completely US centric in nature?

I think any analysis of things falling apart will conclude that one of the main reasons they do is people no longer believing in things.

I'm not saying it doesn't matter WHAT one believes in, but when a shared culture has shared beliefs, things bend, but they don't break. When there are no longer shared beliefs, the culture collapses.

I have spent over 5 hours within 1 foot or less of Covid patients in that time. I have had a certain amount of "if I was going to get it I would have by now" and I was pretty ill with the "flu" early last year so I'm suspicious that I may have already had it. Recently we have had a rash of workers in an area I spend a great deal of my time coming up positive. This week I decided to take the vaccine. Sore arm for 1 day.

Yes health younger folks survive usually but they feel like crap often and I have seen healthy younger people die. So far the vaccine appears safe.

It's called 'mutation' we get thousands every time our cells reproduce. The fact that this vaccine gets into this mechanism is what worries me. There is not enough research and testing yet.
