ATT’s Disaster-Prep Test-Case In Tennessee – A Cash-Only Society Without Data Or Internet
[Buck Throckmorton]

The bombing in Nashville is a timely reminded that disaster preparation should be focused on much more than toilet paper, Lysol spray, and non-perishable food.

As a result of the Nashville bombing, much of Tennessee and Kentucky lost some or all AT&T services on Christmas day, with restoration of services still ongoing several days later. If you live anywhere between Louisville and Chattanooga - and AT&T provides both your cell phone data service and your home internet - there is a very good chance you were cut off from all communication.

For my wife and me, we only lost our cell phone service. Fortunately, our AT&T internet service was not interrupted. We were lucky. But it was still unsettling to be driving and unable to call my wife from my cell phone.

As best I can tell, AT&T has not communicated a single word to its affected customers. They could have texted or emailed me with updates, but they never did. So, I visited some online forums to try to figure out what was going on. A website that tracks outages had a lively forum going on, and one sad post exposed how destructive it can be to require internet access to operate most everything in your house.

“My whole house runs on Alexa, so no heat, lights or internet is what I am dealing with.”

ATT outage - 2.JPG

You should not need the internet to heat your house or turn on your lights. It’s dangerous to leave yourself that vulnerable.

You should also not expect that you will always be able to use credit cards or internet-pay applications.

AT&T outage puts Chattanooga's biggest retailers on cash only payments

Many people I know under the age of 40 take a peculiar pride in not carrying any money with them. They actively scoff at the idea of carrying paper currency. It is inconceivable to them that they might not ever be able to pay for a transaction by holding up their phone, or in a worst-case scenario, by offering up a credit card.

In the past 20 years alone we’ve had 9-11 and the Wuhan Virus cause previously unthinkable interruptions in travel and commerce. Our nation’s enemies (both internal and external) are almost certainly plotting ways to destroy communications so as to foster both terror and economic crisis. If you need the internet to turn on your lights, heat your home, or access your money, then you should not be surprised if someday you find yourself cold, broke, and in the dark.

+++++++++++
It's beyond that. Not to mention the dependency on connectivity without local overrides (which is just piss-poor site/system design), you are opening an attack vector to your home. For lights this might not be *that* big a deal, but what about your thermostat or your door locks? How about someone overrides from the internet and turns off your heat in Wintertime, or perhaps leaves your doors unlocked for you at night?

I once read a great line about IoT: "Our only hope is that Internet of (incompatible) Things collapses under its own weight before the Internet of (insecure) Things gets us all killed."

Too bad folks like Amazon and Google solved the compatibility problems...

29 LOL I know its all bitchen and Star Trek to have a house like Bill Gates but its dumb as hell. And these people are figuring out why. No matter where you live, disaster is just around the corner. Live sensibly but be ready for things to go wrong.

Especially these days

Big body weightlifters do not make bush Marines. They need too much nutrition to carry that weight.

There was a really interesting show about power lifters on A&E or History last year, huge guys who can lift inhuman amounts of weight.

They suffered for it, more than just the workouts. They had to sleep with CPAP devices, because the muscles on their body made it challenging to breathe. They had to eat enormous amounts of calories every meal, like ten times what a normal person does. They couldn't fit in normal chairs.

I'm under 40. With the exception of fuel and online purchases, I run a cash-only lifestyle. This is for privacy reasons, because I don't like all of my transactions being tracked all the time and entering my permanent record. I use random local phone numbers for supermarket rewards, which means that I don't associate with my own profile. I don't like being tracked all the time.

And yes, when I am out with my age cohort, I get weird looks from folks who don't know me well whenever I break out cash to pay a bill. I have been directly asked why I'm using cash instead of accumulating credit card rewards. It's like I'm some kind of aberrant crazy person.

45 One ship I was on in the early Nineties, we had a crew member always take his pay in cash. I finally asked him why, he said he had all of his wealth (save his land) in cash because if SHTF your credit cards would be useless. I said if things got that bad, paper money wouldn't have any value either. He thought a bit and asked what was secure then?

I thought to myself uh oh, now I've opened a can of worms, and told him durable goods, precious metals, maybe jewels. I also pointed out that having bundles of paper money in his room was risky and if he lost it, it was gone for good. At least a treasury check could be cancelled and reissued.

So a couple days later he came to the office with a paper bag filled with hundred dollar bills, and asked to have a treasury check cut for it. He had well over ten thousand bucks in paper money, which was quite a bit for the early nineties.

It is inevitable, not possible, but without question will happen one day that these systems won't be available. Power outages, hurricanes, earthquakes, Volcano, Tornado, Blizzard, EMP, solar flares, war, there are hundreds of possibilities. It will happen some day, and soon.

61 I recall a few years ago, when I lived in an older house than I do now (built 1912, I was redoing it) a tree took out all the lines to the block in an ice storm. Took 4 days to get electricity back (a lot of trees came down, we weren't high on the priority list) BUT that house had nat gas room heaters, a gas stove, and a gas water heater. (from before they needed electricity for the pilot light etc) so, it was not hard to stay there at all, just use candles or a lantern style flashlight for room light at night. Kinda fun to live like The Old Ones did. Refrigerator was out, but it was a cold winter, so we just put needed food in a cooler outside in a shady spot.

62 In my south of San Jose town about a decade or so back, we had what many considered a dry run. The PG&E fiber optic lines in a rather rural and out of the way area was targeted.

There was zero communications in or out, in my case the land line was still functioning, but how many people still have a land line today? I'd bet we're looking at single digit percentage in most suburban areas.

For 2 days, stores were unable to operate, if they could even open their doors. No gas, since pumps were offline. After this little "event" the sub station now looks like what you'd expect for a high value target. Concertina razor wire, cameras, audio, motion sensors, and warnings. Suddenly, a huge wall was erected off of the 101 to protect what was a little shed in the middle of a bunch of power lines and transformers.

Of course, somebody needed to know about this particular spot, what to attack (it wasn't just random) and when. I've got little doubt that we're going to start to see this kind of thing ramping up once the idiots are fully back in charge.

The thing most people don't realize is how much water they use just in consumption every day. It's pretty easy to pick up a gallon for $1 every time you go to the grocery store, and you'll eventually have a decent supply. Sams has big water-cooler refill jugs for $5 and it's worth having one shoved in the back of a closet if that's an option.

The other thing I'm a fan of is potted meat / vienna sausages. Lots of energy in those little cans, and cheap as heck.

71 Another great history lesson on why you should at least have access to some cash (even if it's just in your sock drawer) even if you don't carry it: United Kingdom, 01 June, 2018.

Visa crashed and took down UK payment processing. Mastercard also went down regionally in the UK due to the load from people using it instead of Visa due to the outage. People couldn't buy groceries. They couldn't get fuel for their cars, nor pay cabs or buy bus tickets. It was a disaster, and it was only for a few hours.

Maintain 50% fuel in the tank and have access to a few hundred dollars, no matter what. Even if it isn't terrorism or a state action, shit happens and the internet and major platforms are more fragile than many think.

77 I find the waiters and waitresses like it. A lot.

Yeah for a variety of reasons. Not only do they not report tips that are cash, a lot of places share the tips if they are on the receipt (you add the tip when you pay by card). Most places these days tax an estimated tip total for wait staff but its almost always much lower than what they actually got.

I dated a waitress around 2000 and she was visibly pissed when she came home with less than $80 a day in tips. Her dresser drawer looked like something Scrooge McDuck would swim around in.

I typically don't carry cash on me that often but I do keep about 1k in cash stashed in my gun safe just in case.

A corollary to that: If you do want home automation-like devices and apps/services, ensure that what your set up is not internet/cloud-dependent.

Those "free" or low-cost apps/services and devices that are a cinch to plug in and set up are "free" or low-cost for a reason. And it is likely not because those companies providing them are looking to do you a solid.

My survival pantry is full of the staples:

Couple of gallons of water, some saltine crackers, and many cases of beer.

What you do is whenever you buy beer, buy twice as much as you normally would. Then slowly build your stock up.

Also, don't forget to rotate the beer. Depending on the type of beer, you're looking at 90 days to a few years before it gets skunked. So when you buy new beer, buy it warm (not in the cooler), and put it in the pantry while rotating out some of the older beer.

One of my son's friends was staying with us for a few days - he was planning to leave the next day. He was panicked because he was relying on Waze or some similar GPS app to get him back home. I went out to my car and grabbed my good ole' ROAD ATLAS!!! I made him study it so he could at least know how to get to I-95 near Richmond. From there, it's nearly dummy-proof to get back to our neck of the woods in MD.

The service returned in time for him to leave, so he was able to use his trusty navigation app. But he and my kids no longer laugh at me for being Cliff Clavin and Rain Man combined when it comes to the US Highway system -- haha!

When Sandy came through, everyone in the area lost power, heat, hot water, etc, for days. But their house somehow still had heat due to the jerry-rigged system (and other, older members of their family stayed there for days while utilities were being restored).
Not all the old ways were wrong.

Thing is, I'm all by myself, have nothing to water, turn off every light and run practically nothing. Yet somehow I'm still normal. You're not convincing me that a home full of women taking 10 minute showers, running hair dryers, ovens, etc only use as much as I do heating up a fucking microwave burrito.

I should know better, and leave the heater running and leave the windows open, with the hose turned on full blast out in the street. At least then I'm setting up a baseline, so when they cut 25% of my usage, I'm not hurting a bit.

Welcome to the year 2030. Welcome to my city - or should I say, "our city". I don't own anything. I don't own a car. I don't own a house. I don't own any appliances or any clothes.

It might seem odd to you, but it makes perfect sense for us in this city. Everything you considered a product, has now become a service. We have access to transportation, accommodation, food and all the things we need in our daily lives. One by one all these things became free, so it ended up not making sense for us to own much.

OOh it texted me that its on the rinse cycle. I'm so high tech! You old people and your just checking the machine!

California wants everyone to go to electric cars, at the same time as they shut down electrical power plants. So if you're in wildfire country and you need to flee, but your electric car is discharged, and PG&E or whatever has shut down the power lines (in anticipation of a wildfire threat), then you've got yourself quite a little problem.

They discontinued them last year.
Posted by: DOCTOR! IllTemperedCur at December 28, 2020 03:38 PM (EGyGV)

Those always seemed dumb. You tend not to impulse buy stuff like laundry detergent. So a press button to order more was always dumb. If you do online shopping you're probably not ordering one thing at a time. And if that merely did an "add to cart" well you likely have an Amazon app on your phone that can do that. Then there is just simply going to the store if you forgot to order.

I'd love to know what the number of those actually bought was, and then what the usage rate was. I bet they were small and insignificant.

246 I have a google nest in my home. I didn't install it the previous homeowner did. I hate it. It can't work in the SE. To use its money saving feature "leaf" you have to accept a minimum summer temp in your home while you are away of 76F. In theory the system "learns" when you come home starts cooling to your preferred temp before you get home. This could never work because if you allow your temp to get to 76F in the afternoon in the SE there is no way you're going to cool it to anything less than 78F until about 6am in the morning. It does make sense if you live in the cool pacific NW where these assholes come from who designed it. The min temp is hardwired.

So I turn that crap off and just use it as a normal thermostat.

289 Fiber optic cuts almost always take 24 hours to fix. And that's a simple "backhoe cut the line" issue. They also can take down more than one company's service.

There is a reason I've been buying kerosene lamps (put out heat as well as light.) I seem to be more interested in non-electric things. I dug out the two burner propane stove, which needs cleaning but should work now that I have some cannisters. I need to fill up the water bottles I stash under the sink, etc. it's not hard to have some basic preps on hand.

For a "normal emergency" of seven days or so, $500 cash might score you some groceries and gas. Based on my experience through an ice storm - no travel for four days, no power for more, plenty of food and water on hand. Once we got out, comm lines were down so no credit. We had cash.
Longer than seven days ? Cash won't be the currency of choice. It only took that long for certain folks around me to show their true colors. I responded in kind.

I told it was fine, all I had waiting for me was dishes and she laughed. The check out girl looked to be all of 19 and she said that she was thinking about getting checks and using them because there was so much fraud with cards and checks seemed safer.

Which is how I and another lady spent a good five minutes (there was no one in line behind me) explaining to the super confused check out girl what check washing was. She was stunned.

True, but the voice processing for the Echo is done off-site at Amazon's servers. So you can have an Echo and a light on the same (islanded) network and yell at it to turn on the light right next to it all day, and nothing will happen, because the command won't be processed.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at December 28, 2020 03:52 PM (KZzsI)

Well if someone is going to go to the trouble of faking a check, then depositing in their own account, what difference does it make if you scan it with your cell phone or if a check clearing house scans it with their cameras?

ATM's do the same thing. You put the check in, it scans it, shows you the image and how much the deposit is for, you say "yep, that's right."

The physical checks are destroyed after they are scanned. They're not shipped around the country to banks anymore like they were pre-9/11.

That system was deemed not ideal when air traffic was grounded and it was taking a lot time to move checks around the country on trucks.

Yeah, I turn off my water main, and drain my water heater when I'm not showering.

Just common sense stuff like that, ya know?

434 Of course, I'm the guy that throws the water valve and main breaker for leaving for vacation.

A buddy just happened to hear water running during the night before leaving on vacation. Water heater popped and flooded his basement. Lost all the wooden flooring but imagine how much water your basement could hold in 2 weeks. I like the idea of water alarms.

Go figure.

437 Home flooding is real. My sister in law left a puppy in the bathroom. Hours later 80k damage done by a toilet water line chew through. Any pressurized water lines are a hazard. Water damage is no bueno.

If i were paranoid i would shut the water off anytime i left the house.

Electrical appliances are less dangerous.

439 Millennial here. I still write checks for my rent

service charge for online payments and out of principle I will not pay
it because I don't believe you should be charged extra because you
choose to pay a certain way. Oftentimes I'll walk to the leasing office
to drop the check off so I get some extra steps in too. A win win if you
ask me.

Hah! I've had plugged in heaters that were not running as the temperature was okay, fry the outlet they were plugged into because while they were "off" they were still drawing current. Enough so that when it shorted out the outlet started smoking. That's how I found out it happened. Enough to start a fire but not enough to trip the breaker.

A log of stuff that is plugged in is actually "on" it just isn't operating in normal mode.

Don't be fooled in thinking it's okay. In fact the lower current draw is worse if it shorts as it won't throw the breaker.

455 My Kindle, which is from AMAZON, that made Alexa, cannot run Alexa. Alexa has no rights to anything.

The Kindle has a camera. I have denied the Camera App all permissions to (1) saving files (2) reading files, and (3) accessing the Camera on the Kindle.

It makes me jolly to accidentally open the Camera App and watch it whine about not being allowed to see the camera.

I love being cruel to software.

I've been looking for a new TV and the one thing that gives me the heebie-jeebies is that they all have Alexa embedded in them. Can you avoid using it? I don't use any Google products and the only time I use Siri is in the grocery store, mostly for measurement conversions or food substitutions.

460 Having lived through hurricanes in Miami and seen what a destructive one like Andrew can do, our motto is always have these items on hand -- several thousand dollars in cash, boxes and large plastic bags (needed if you have to pack up and live temporarily somewhere else, at least 6 gallons of bottled water, important personal papers in a waterproof bag and easily accessed, guns 'n ammo (plenty of ammo), a packed bag with all meds, and important contact info in case phone/internet don't work.

461 I won't even repeat-visit someone who HAS an Alexa or Siri in their house. They're living in a Panopticon. If that's what the Deep Staters intend to impose on everybody as the Great Reset, then I predict (and hope for) a lot more Nashvilles.

462 I remember my first job, I worked in a book store in a mall. It was a gazillion years ago. The power went out. Which meant the register didn't work. My boss dumped the silverware tray in back and used it for cash drawer. He grabbed receipt pads he also had in back and we hand write receipts. And I learned something that I find hardly anyone in retail now knows how to do: Count back change. It's so easy to do, but no one under 60 I think knows how to do it.

It's an important skill.

I bet those folks in Tennessee had to break out the calculator to do the math to give change.

463 I was given a Alexa for Christmas a few years back. Pleyed with it a while, understood what it really is and disconnected it. They spy on you enough without you actively helping them! I have "smart" thermostats but I keep old manual, mercury switch, ones in the garage should they be needed.
We have always kept cash around but I am now seriously considering buying a stash of gold coins.
