Saturday Evening Movie Thread 12-05-2020 [Hosted By: Moviegique]

Freaky (2020)

Pickings, as noted, have been slim, though they were much fatter a few weeks ago before The Tyrant Newsom capriciously shut everything down again, and we had a chance to trek out and see a double-feature. The first feature was John Wick which the kids actually hadn't seen (I couldn't get them to go with me the first time). There was an interesting movie from the people who did Secret of the Kells and Song of the Sea, but with 6 of 30 seats already taken, the three of us couldn't get tickets because that would exceed 25% capacity.

But The Flower (and to a lesser extent The Boy) was semi-intrigued by this horror remake of Freaky Friday. As she said, "It's not like it's a classic that they're screwing up, Dad." It's a fair point: Her version of the movie is the cute-but-not-classic Jamie Lee Curtis/Lindsay Lohan, whereas mine is the also cute-but-not-classic Barbara Harris/Jodie Foster version. The premise, if you don't know, is that a mother and daughter, frustrated with their impressions of how easy the other's life is, end up swapping places. Body swapping in the movies goes back at least to the Thorne Smith story Turnabout (which Hal Roach made into a cute movie with Adolphe Menjou and Carole Landis), where it's a frustrated husband/wife swap.

Freaky 01.png
Carole Landis manspreads in "Turnabout".

But in this case, instead of swapping with her mother, our teen heroine Millie (Kathryn Newton, Three Billboards Outside of Billings, Montana and Lady Bird) swaps with the crazed slasher who is trying to kill her, thanks to his recent acquisition of a Zuni doll or a totem or whatever. Where the usual playbook is for the swapped characters to struggle comically being a fish-out-of-water in their unfamiliar surroundings, in this case—well, it's exactly the same here, just one's a psycho.

Now, really, this is pretty much an actor's storyline. It had a lot more "bite" back in 1940, but seeing Adolphe Menjou flounce around while Carole Landis "manspread" in Turnabout is that movie's primary entertainment value. I don't remember the '70s version well enough to say much about the acting, but I remember being disappointed by the '00s version, because Jamie Lee Curtis' has so many easily imitable mannerisms, and the "swap" doesn't change either hers or Lohan's at all. (Annette Benning dropped out of the role just six days earlier, which may account for this.)

Freaky 02.png
This "Freaky" is about a psycho whereas most are about teen girls and stressed moms and I probably better stop right there.

In this case, Vince Vaughn (whose doesn't play psycho-killers nearly enough) gets to flounce around like a teen girl (and even kiss a boy though that is thankfully obscured) and Kathryn Newton gets to play a slasher who's constantly confounded by her sudden loss of strength. I liked this aspect of the film: I mean, it was absolutely necessary that this 105-pound girl not be very physically intimidating for the premise to work, but if the past 30 years of entertainment have taught us anything, any woman can beat up any man at any time using nothing more than girl power. So it was actually kind of refreshing that this movie pointed out the obvious.

The movie opens with a clichéd (almost campy) murder of a quartet of obnoxious teens you're largely glad to see die, and when you first meet Mille and her two besties, you pretty much want them to die, too. One of the besties is very out gay boy and the other is a soulful-saint black girl, checking off vital diversity boxes—but as with other Blumhouse features, they do extend a bit beyond mere tokenism. The actors (Celest O'Connor and Misha Osherovich) are fine, though the movie couldn't resist throwing in a closeted football player—I'm almost surprised they didn't have a closeted Klan member.

Freaky 03.png
Vaughn, 50, is still pretty convincing as a maniac.

Millie is lives in strained circumstances with her recently widowed mother (Katie Finneran, of the underrated 1990 Night of the Living Dead remake) and her snarky sheriff sister (Dana Drori). Mom gets drunk and forgets to pick up Millie after the game and that's when The Butcher (Vaughn) finds her. The next morning he wakes up in her bed and she wakes up in an abandoned mill. The next hour involves Millie (in The Butcher's body) convincing her friends who she is and trying to unravel the mystery while The Butcher (in Millie's body) goes on a killing spree, utilizing his/her new privileges as a cute teen girl. (Of course, any horror fan knows that about 15% of all slashers are cute teen girls but whatever.)

It's cute, but not classic, much like it's predecessors. It might end up as my favorite version of Freaky Friday, for what that's worth. Some laughs, not really any big scares. A fair amount of legitimate suspense as you wonder how they're going to swap back before midnight (at which point the swap becomes permanent). There is a tension that comes from mixing genres: If it were straight horror, you'd sort of expect them not to switch back or—given that body swapping is a staple of horror far more than comedy—for Vaughn to end up in yet another body, but it still has the same kind of After School Special feel of its predecessors. It's really hard to imagine good won't prevail.

The gore is pretty perfunctory as is the (minimal) sex, and it wraps up pretty well in the hour. (I'm seeing now that it's supposedly an hour and 42 minutes, which I don't think I believe. At the theater, they had it listed as 85 minutes.) In any event, there's an end to the movie followed by a denouement which made the movie feel overlong and was a little too "yass kween" for my taste. It doesn't fit, but it doesn't really ruin the movie.

We had fun and that's all we were looking for, even though the theaters themselves are a weird and alienating experience in post-Covid California.

Freaky 04.pngTFW you convince your friends you're not a slasher on a spree.

12 Enjoy the theater while you can.

Disney will likely be providing the second tap this week in order to counter WB moving all their stuff to HBO Max, and Disney will likely launch Disney+ 18 to counter that, but also finish theaters as a mainstream thing.

One of the trade papers online said WB is likely scrambling to try to appease the big actors in the 17 direct to Max (with a side of theater, but come on, really) who have box office results linked to their contract.

So Whoreywood accounting may have to work in some actors favor for a change to keep them from going to work for the competition (which at this point is mostly The Mouse really). Needless to say, I am hoping for both actual blood and lots and lots of red ink to be spilled.

52 I think Ad Astra gets a bad rap. It strikes me as a fairly conservative film, kind of a meditation on the effects of fatherlessness and how to figure out how to be a man and have a good life when you are effectively making it up from scratch because your father wasn't a good one, was absent etc.

Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at December 05, 2020 08:01 PM (H5knJ)

53 I watched seasons 1 and 2 of "What We Do in the Shadows" and loved it. I avoided it because I was such a fan of the movie and was sure they would dilute it, but the series actually improves on it.

One episode had the trio of vampires on trial by the Vampire Tribunal, which featured Tilda Swinton, Paul Ruben, Wesley Snipes, and other actors famous for playing vampires. Unfortunately, "Tom and Brad weren't available".

54 Hmmm, there's a Freaky Friday genre. Who knew.

I ordered 3 different versions of the Baron Munchausen genre, and have only ever seen the Terry Gilliam version. Which was fun enough.

There's a silent version, I think. I'll have to figure out how to find it. I'm interested in how, over the years, the technology changes create opportunity to show the more fantastic elements. And of course, newer isn't always better, as practical effects are sometimes MUCH better than CGI, no matter how "good" the CGI is.

Streaming may bring back the studio system. That's the only way to make it work. You have the actors under contract, standard sets, etc. The model of an actor being a draw has been generally dead for a couple of decades.

The last time that happened was with Colin Dexter/Inspector Morse, and although the books and the adaptations were different, they were similar enough that I enjoyed both. 76 It is even darker when you realize the biggest punch to this was that Luke's mentor, the man who gave Luke purpose in his life after his Uncle and Aunt were killed and trained him in the cult of Jedi flat out lied to Luke about this.

Suddenly the Luke in The Last Jedi makes a lot of sense.
Posted by: Bete at December 05, 2020 08:04 PM (Ojki1)

Which almost makes it tragic that Roundhead Rian Johnson took that story, and turned Luke into a cartoon buffoon.

He was there on that island precisely because he was damaged by that whole experience. Not the loss of his hand, but by the loss of this idea that there are people you can trust completely.

It was momentarily explored, and I have to think Lucasfilm gave Johnson the outline, said THIS is where Luke is at this point, but Johnson couldn't resist destroying Luke as a character.

Jerk.

If movies survive, somebody in the very near future has to redo these sequels. All three of them.

I have only seen the adaptations, but your comment inspires me to buy the books. The last time that happened was with Colin Dexter/Inspector Morse, and although the books and the adaptations were different, they were similar enough that I enjoyed both. I have enjoyed all of the Jesse Stone "movies" (really, movies made for TV). Sort of doubt they will make another (Tom Selleck appears to be focused on the increasingly tired and preachy Blue Bloods instead), but there's always hope.

I'm even a fan of miniatures. And matte paintings.

These days you can see them clearly in most situations, and a part of me really appreciates how they incorporate both into a larger set, cutting back and forth between the miniatures and the live action. If it's well done, it's nice having the eyes noticing the effects, much better than "seamless" CGI.

... when John Cusack is visiting Ione Skye's dad in jail, to (among other things) tell him he's going to Europe with his daughter, and said dad throws a tantrum.

John is awful calm during the scene. I wonder if it would or could have been made better, if his character threw a tantrum back at Dad, saying in effect "I'm the man your daughter loves. You need to get used to it."

Instead, he just says "I'm the distraction that's going to Europe with her, sir."

As noted above, the crime of it is having wasted the original actors, killing them off to get them out of the way.

So... any redo is going to have that dilemma. Do you keep the characters, and plug in new actors, or do you scrap the characters, trying to create a new generation that isn't in any way related to Rey and Kylo Ren and Rose Tiko and all that garbage.

Posted by: BurtTC at December 05, 2020 08:25 PM (hku12)

133 I think they should have never done another Star Wars film after the first three. It was so well done, and complete that all they could do is screw it up at that point. The Hollywood in Toto guy didn't hate it from what I read. And Ron Howard gave an interview stating most of the hate he got was from libs pissed he had made the film and not given them the leftist circle jerk of mocking the characters that they wanted (Howard apparently removed all the Trump stuff).

I have come to recognize almost all mainstream "reviewers" are just people who read everything through their church of leftism, and by and large I don't bother with their opinions though on a few occasions I do agree with them when the review isn't filtered through their scriptures. But that is getting rarer and rarer.

Highlander 1 set the stage.

Highlander 2 went berserk, and we suddenly had Alien Immortals.

Highlander the series, ignored Highlander 2, like it never existed.

Later movies continues that trend.

Ah, I see.

Sorta like with Logan, they basically did a story that almost acts like most of the sequels don't exist, basically taking these two specific characters and letting us see how their stories play out. And then sorta create an opportunity for a next generation... if anyone wants it.

158 > "Every review of "Hillbilly Elegy" I've seen hated it. "

My wife and I watched it a couple nights ago. So, she's from Appalachia, and has some very opinionated thoughts on this movie.

The two lead women, Close and Adams, are "shallow" and not particularly well fleshed out. That being said, Close has a pretty good take on the Appalachian mamaw. I know, I've seen it. I get that the majority of the story is in Ohio, and Kentucky... but both are near enough to the Appalachian's to be cromulent.

The story is pretty true to life regardless what Ron Howard did to it.

Neither were competent, from a writing standpoint, to do Star Wars movies. Add in KK as "leadership" and it was doomed to fail. Today's Hollywood writers, sadly a lot from my Gen-X generation, seem incapable of putting together a coherent story. A lot of it is a lack of a literary education. Add in SJW signalling needs and you end up with trash. Ace wrote a more coherent TFA story than JJ put together.

They could have had a story (ht: Ace) where Rey ends up as a child stuck on a planet with a Stormtrooper, Fin, who raises her. (Parents on archaeological expedition for Empire and everyone dies during Rebel attack) Rey learns Force powers from a nearby Jedi/Sith/? temple. Explains her powers and also makes her more of a wildcard (good/evil/gray). Fin trains her in discipline.

Which is a real shame as there was 25 years worth of additional material showing what could be done in the universe, but everyone kept running back to building off stuff in the 1st trilogy.

That's basically George's fault, his silly notion that there needed to be a rhyme, a symmetry between the original three films, and the subsequent prequels and sequels.

I'm really not the target audience for what comes next, but I think that's why people overpraise the Mandelorian thing.

I think the Force Awakens was the fault of
Lawrence Kasdan recognizing he could basically re-write his Star Wars script and Abrams adding in a bunch of "mystery box with no planned payoff" shit that he is famous for to blend in a healthy bit of nostalgia for the original film.

For people who felt the film needed to be just a update for a new generation it seemed to go over great. For people wanting something else...no so much.

Until you see that that is the pattern of JJ Abrams career. He imagines himself to be the next Spielberg, and to be fair he is a better than average director. He just has no idea why things work like they do in film/TV and that throwing out cool teases with no thought into payoff rarely works, and once people have figured out that is your gimmick, like Shamalan and twists, it looses its effect and becomes a punch line.

And yet Bad Robot has the ability to acquire and destroy so much because current Whoreywood is such a garbage fire.

237 I have not seen "Hillbilly Elegy" though on Rotten Tomatoes it has almost a double-Jesus-split. (A Jesus split is a 40 point hit that a movie takes with critics over the popular vote because it mentions Jesus.)

Normally, I'd consider that to be a recommendation, but I'm kind of on the "meh" as far as Little Ronny Howard. His Beatles documentary was okay, and I liked "Frost/Nixon" but primarily because Langella plays Nixon like he's King Lear. Everybody else looks like ankle-biters.

Before that, he did "Cindarella Man" which pissed me off and really put me off him. He slurred Max Baer horribly, and Baer's family was reasonably upset.

Oh, also, "A Beautiful Mind" also kind of pissed me off because the real game theory didn't support their leftist views, so they just changed it.

It was, in fact, Max Baer, Jr who objected most loudly to this portrayal of his father and I totally had this view of this gentle giant being sad because people were mean to his dad.

And it could've been a MUCH better movie if they treated Baer, Sr. fairly. Instead turning him into a cartoon villain, treat him as someone who was so gentle, he genuinely felt BAD about hurting people in the ring, and was doubtless conflicted about the match.

No, no, make him Mr. T's character from Rocky III, that's how you get the Oscars.

334 308 I often say my "Star Wars" fandom started in 1980, when "Empire Strikes Back" came out (I didn't like the first movie much), and ended in 1983 when "Return of the Jedi" came out.

But I remember a lot of the "it's like poetry, it rhymes" crap and what I heard was, "I have no new ideas, which was apparent when 'Return' rehashed the plot of the first movie." And the only thing I can say in Lucas' defense is that that seems to have been true of the Disney sequels, too.
Posted by: moviegique at December 05, 2020 09:06 PM (dhFCT)

It is hilarious to watch the interview where Lucas touches on Star Treks The Motion Pictures over reliance on effects to carry a picture and then see Jedi (not to mention the prequel trilogy...in fact, lets pretend it wasn't mentioned).

Add in that he clearly had figured out just how much money merch would make him and Jedi really played into that.

I'm 29 enough to remember how quickly after Jedi came out Star Wars was being clearanced and forgotten, even as Lucasfilm tried to push the 2 Ewok TV films and the Ewok and Droids cartoon.

She made the mistake of asking me to model for this. I immediately kicked out at her, and said "Is this why I fought in Vietnam? For some uppity youngster to manhandle my feet?!"

I was going for verisimilitude. Showing the challenges that a CNA faces... but, nooooo. "The Director" fired me and replaced me with the boy.

Now, he's giving her hell, too... He's the patient for whom the water temperature is NEVER right.

I, nor Miley, have been around here for the past few days or so, and I had a chance to drop in and update. We've completed the move, and Miley is thus ensconced in her new house. I haven't gotten stinking Charter/Spectrum in to hook up the cable and internet yet -- distance to the house is 550' from the road, way longer than max passive drop distance, so they're gonna have to put in a powered line with a repeater someway, and they're being assholes about that.

But I'll get it done. Miley loves the house and I do too -- but it's made me have to work the last week. Spread 15 cu. yds of mulch, just hung a damned chandelier over the dining area today, and other stuff. I'll be working on a proper driveway next week.

I'll be back regularly when I get internet down there, or when I get back up at the folks house.

I do understand that concept, so I won't have any problems. I also have read that the Jesse Stone character in the books is much younger than the character Tom Selleck plays on TV. But that's OK. Timeframe, context, etc.

My favorite authors, in terms of sheer excellence, are Washington Irving and Charles Dickens, with a nod to P.G. Wodehouse and C.S. Forester as runners-up. And an honorable mention to Patrick O'Brian. So no problem with understanding writers in terms of historical context.

Which Jesse Stone did you watch, by the way?

As for Buffy and Spike, I think viewers were SUPPOSED to hate the pairing. That was the point. You bring a person back from the dead, and even if she's not "evil," she's still going to have her doubts. And make bad choices.

The one true genius of the show was NOT trying to make Buffy into a character who could do no wrong. She had to grow the F up. Which she did.

Don't hate me but I'm thinking of re-watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer tv series again.

No hatred here. Watch it while you still can - Spike's speech in
the Thanksgiving episode about how white Americans should stop with the
"boo hoo about the bloody Indians" and "We came, we conquered, now we
feel bad about it" is basically a hate crime now.

Working now? Man, I used to know all the up-and-coming directors and who was good or promising but there aren't many these days that stand out. The volume's too high.

That said, I hear good thing about Favreau's work on "The Mandalorian" and I've been a fan of his and, uh, Peter Berg's for a while. They probably have the most feel for the material. Or maybe Michael Bay? I don't like most of his movies but at least he comprehends good vs. evil.

If you wanted someone to helm it to get =me= going to see it, I'd pick John Carpenter. "Star Wars" is basically a Western and Carpenter has the right aesthetic for that...but I'm not sure he could pull off the "good" in "good vs. evil". Heh. But I go see it.

First - it's absurd to do *any* of this radical (and failed) experimental "mitigation" for a bug with an IFR of below 0.1% for most of the population.

440 Oh - and owing to the lack of anything I really want to pay to see, I've gone to theaters about twice per year for many years. Last time was ...... Into the Cold Blue (8th Air Force documentary, with a Hollywood movie-making tie-in), last year, I think.

Posted by: rhomboid at December 05, 2020 09:50 PM (OTzUX)

441 I guess I don't need to elaborate on my own love of going to the movies. I can't really focus at home much. Kids, animals, delivery guys...

I know Ace had a rant about how the theater experience doesn't give you anything but I find that EVERY movie is better in the theater, no matter how small-screened, small-minded, small-budgeted.

How much better is a matter of degrees. Horror movies are about 50-100% better. Light drama, romcoms, maybe only 15%. Broad comedies are probably up there with horror in terms of improvement.

Size matters. I can be alone in a theater and I'll get more out of it than I will watching on TV. Going out matters. Making that decision "I'm going to watch this come hell or high water" means you gotta commit.

Meh. I hate what they're doing to the world.

Posted by: moviegique at December 05, 2020 09:51 PM (dhFCT)

442 For sure, movie theaters going the way of the dinosaur will suck. I will miss watching an awesome movie, getting a hand job under my jacket or maybe even the chance of doing the hibbidy-dibbidy depending on the layout of the theater, security and amount of people attending. : (

Posted by: JROD at December 05, 2020 09:51 PM (0jZnq)

443 I don't know what it was like in the movie theater. But I think High Plains Drifter has more of an impact if you watch it alone late at night. It ads to the solitude and bleakness of the film.

Of course movies like Rocky and the original Star Wars were best seen in a theater.

They did. From what I heard (and the sources were mocking so it could be wrong), Rey traveled to the past to teach characters like Luke how to use the Force.

Because really, why not try to outshout people calling her a Mary Sue by making her the most Mary Sue of all time?

I get this. Years ago, my husband and I saw Men In Black when it first opened in theaters (yeah, get off my lawn)

We watched in NoVA, with a bunch of other government types, and were crying at the digs at government types - we all got it, we all experienced it, we all probably did it at some point. It was a wonderful time.

Now that I am 29, theater sound systems hurt my ears, so I don't enjoy them as much. But I mourn them for the entry level jobs for kids trying to earn a buck.

And the popcorn. Movie popcorn is unique.

458 the sound level in modern movie theaters is a huge turn off to me. The last few films I have seen were blasted so loud it was truly uncomfortable. I don't know if this is done because people have lost their hearing from using ear buds all the time or what. But it is one thing to have loud moments, and another to simply get the sound projection all wrong.

460 Yeah, Master and Commander was a "recent" movie that was definitely one for the big screen.

Need to even stop thinking about this.

It's so infuriating - and scary.

A county (populace, institutions) that will inflict so much needless harm on itself based on no real science or data will ..... be very vulnerable to efforts to impose catastrophic damage for "climate" purposes.

Posted by: rhomboid at December 05, 2020 09:58 PM (OTzUX)

461 if you had to pick someone to remake the sequels, someone working right now, who would it be?

464 Ob: If you liked "Ready Player One", or even better if you HATED it, I can't recommend the podcast "372 Pages We'll Never Get Back". They covered "Ready Player One" when they started three years ago (it had 372 pages, hence the podcast name), and followed it up with "Armada". ("People say Armada is the BAD book, and we don't see how that's possible relative to RP1.")

Now they're doing RP2. It's hilarious. Even more so for me, since after reading RP1 I felt I never needed to read anything by Ernest Cline ever again, so I get all of the podcast-y goodness and none of the craptacular writing.

471 >>I wonder if someone like Denis Villeneuve could pull it off.

Oh, that's a great choice, at least in terms of getting something watchable and even sort of thoughtful.

But the thing is, "Star Wars" was what it was because we were coming out of that "everything is shades of gray" era of filmmaking. There were ONLY antiheroes and despair and trivialities (scatalogical stuff).

Then here comes of a movie with bad guys storming around doing evil and heroes trying to stop them and even the antihero is more a lovable rogue than a bad guy and blammo! People start going to the movies again.

So Villaneuve is incredibly talented but could he pull off a genuine, comic-book good vs evil struggle? I look at movies like the DC universe ones and they just seem to force something that is definitionally black-and-white into a shades of gray mold.

And I really don't care for it. As someone who sees a shitton of "gray" art movies, I hate that I have to go to effin' Korea to see a fun "good vs evil" storyline.

480 Normally, I'd consider that to be a recommendation, but I'm kind of on the "meh" as far as Little Ronny Howard.
