Happy Fun Time Open Thread

No arguing. I'll put up a post right on top of this one for political arguing.

If you want to talk politics, go upstairs to the top thread.

You can make fun of these idiots, of course:

1. This looks like the guy who gets cucked by Brian Stelter.

2. This looks like a giant egg wearing a blazer from Chess King (TM).

3. This looks like a fatter, whiter maskless Darth Vader at the end of Return of the Jedi.

Mom makes a large Christmas pastry every year. First, you have to pick out all the candied fruit, because it's disgusting, but the pastry itself... wonderful.

Plus, it's Mom's annual Christmas pastry, so it's basically home.

192 I would like to tell what I think was a touching story about two folks in my congregation.

Ray's wife died several weeks ago. Yesterday I went to visit him (again) while I was there he mentioned someone else in my congregation (Barbara) whom he's known a long time. She has had several bouts of cancer and is in treatment now, and kind of sad about losing her hair, but she's not a complainer. He said "Barbara invited me over to have tea, so I'm going to go next week".I was very touched by the fact that Barbara who has her own struggles wants to reach out to Ray because he's missing his wife whom she's also known a long time. It just goes to show you that if you reach out to others it can sometimes make you think less of your own problems.

I love these folks.

208 @156 Insomniac-One summer when I was in high school I worked mowing lawns for a large property owner in Reno. It was apartment complexes, office buildings and a couple old folks communities.
Mowing the lawns around them old folks communities that are all ground level buildings with windows you can look right into was quite a shock for a 16 year old. Them old timers would leave their blinds or curtains wide open, sometimes the glass was open too so you got the full effect as you walked by.
This was pre-viagra and a lot of them were pretty busy getting down. Them old folks homes were the one place you actually made an effort not to be curious and look in the window.

I bought one of those Buche De Noel Yule Log Pan - Bakeware - Nordic Ware pans this year to do the Yule Log.

I also bought the Pine Forest Bundt Pan.

I'll have fun with them.

I like the Yule Log. I hope this pan makes it easier. Might go fancy and make meringue mushrooms and all.

I usually like Christmas cookies like others have said. Like nurse said above, I do the same. I make multiple types and hand out as gifts. Sometimes I have swayed to different types of fudge or toffee and other candies and truffles. One year I did different types of biscotti.

This year I will hand out the bundt cakes to family members.

Reposting this funny story

Yesterday finishing a new space for some kind of lab company for
some reason at least 8 of the employees of the company were all wearing
pajamas and bedroom slippers. One guy and one woman had onesie on, the
guy had a furry animal suit. Even the woman in charge had pajamas on.
Seen her and a couple other of these people in last week and this was
the first time I saw them in night wear.

Posted by: Skip at December 04, 2020 03:16 AM

It was normal street wear today, didn't ask What the pajamas were about yesterday

For reasons that probably don't make sense to anybody, including me, I always get Fincher and Christopher Nolan mixed up.

One of them makes movies I generally like, the other is an increasingly insipid hack, making what I suppose he thinks are intellectual films that bore me too much to think about as much as others do.

I think the dealio with Citizen Kane was that it was so iconic, and it began a lot of movie "memes" that have been copied and repeated so many times, and we have seen them in TV shows and other movies, that when you do actually see it "now", it doesn't at seem remarkable. I think it was when it came out, but now it a lot of the ideas that were original then, have been copied so much, we just see it and go...."meh".

Just my hackneyed theory.

Some of us might not make it through to the end of it.

What I don't know is if those are the lucky ones or not.

326 317 Citizen Kane is a great movie

It bored me to tears. I'll never understand why some think it's the greatest movie ever made.
Posted by: Jewells45TRUMPWON! at December 04, 2020 04:20 PM (nxdel)

It is very well shot and acted, and at the time it was relevant- sort of like all the films using thin OrangeManBad as villains.

Problem is once society moved on and the loss of focus on its OrangeManBad protagonist faded it loses some of its punch.

Good thing that won't happen with current films! (I kid, 90% of current films are passing things that few expect to be remembered in 5 years unless they are part of a "franchise")

327 309 Moonbeam thank you!!! The ettes have been good to me over the past week or so. It's so appreciated and got me off my butt to start making new stuff. I just haven't had any inspiration the past few months. I hope you like everything!

328 I think the dealio with Citizen Kane was that it was so iconic, and it began a lot of movie "memes" that have been copied and repeated so many times, and we have seen them in TV shows and other movies, that when you do actually see it "now", it doesn't at seem remarkable. I think it was when it came out, but now it a lot of the ideas that were original then, have been copied so much, we just see it and go...."meh".

Just my hackneyed theory.

Casablanca
was the same for me the first time I saw it. So many lines are iconic and parodied, that it makes a first viewing of the movie more like watching a camp comedy.

My opinion has changed, of course. Good movie, for its time and place.

==========

Yup.

The Sight and Sound Poll is like any list of movies you come across: It's a suggested list for viewing. People puff them up, but that's all they really are.

And you know what? Deciding to watch everything that has appeared in the Top 10 of the Sight and Sound poll since 1952 would be an interesting cinematic journey to undertake.

338 It's fine. The story's interesting, it's well acted, the pacing is fine, the sets, the lighting, the cinematography, it's all fine.

But it's just a movie. It ain't all that. Or as they say, it's no Citizen Kane.

I think you're very much correct.

I'm trying to think of more recent parallels, and the one that comes to mind is the first Jurassic Park. The extent to which they were able to seamlessly incorporate the CGI into the rest of the film, it was perhaps one of the most revolutionary films of recent years.

And I think people love that movie, because the whole stands up for itself, without having to rely on its having been an original, with many imitators.

Kane though... the story is... it's just alright. Everything else about it, the things we have kinda know about movie making, in order to appreciate it, I think that's not our fault if we don't quite appreciate it as much as we "should."

340 On the plus side Amazon got in another shipment of Columbia Classics on 4K, so I grabbed it for $91.

Dr. Strangelove and Lawrence of Arabia are my main reasons.

I saw Mr. Smith goes to Washington also 20ish years ago, and didn't think much of it then and am only even more politically cynical now so I wonder how that will hold up.

Have never seen Gandhi, was watching ET at the time instead (somehow, despite being -9 years old).

I like a League of Their Own, but not sure how it got lumped in this set. Maybe they needed a 90's movie and wanted to fluff Tom Hanks?

Also Jerry McGuire, which I liked the one time I saw it, have never bothered since and imagine it his here to fluff Tom Cruise, but the excuse would be Cuba Gooding Jr's Oscar (before he fell off the cliff).

I'm waiting for them to release those individually.

I don't need Jerry Mcguire, A League of Their Own, or Ghandi.

I mostly just want that 4K of Lawrence of Arabia to replace my old DVD.

353 Speaking of movies. I watched a really great one last night called Cosmos. Made in 2019, it's British I think. Excellent movie about 3 astronomers who intercept a signal from outer space. The acting was top notch. Starts slow but holy shit by end you're on the edge of your seat. I didn't understand some of the techy stuff but you will get the gist of it. Highly recommend.
