Karma-Cola: Biden's Pick for Top Economic Adviser Endorsed a Bill Creating a National Soda Tax [Buck Throckmorton]

If Biden becomes President, I would enjoy seeing a national soda tax imposed on Coke and Pepsi. In fact, I want it to happen.

My principles used to be that applying harsh taxes on certain products to influence consumers not to use those products was immoral and anti-free market. Well, those are actually still my principles. But I’ve come to have a stronger overriding principle – that it is necessary and appropriate for corporations to receive a poisonous bite when the serpents they’ve cozied up to gain political power.

Coke and Pepsi – you deserve this.

Joe Biden's Pick for Top Economic Adviser, Neera Tanden, Endorsed a Bill Creating a National Soda Tax

As the head of the progressive think tank Center for American Progress (CAP), Neera Tanden applauded and endorsed a Democratic proposal to implement a national soda tax. Now, she is one Senate confirmation vote away from becoming President-elect Joe Biden's top economic adviser.

I was shocked back in 2005 when Pepsi introduced me to the world of corporate CEOs here in America who openly show their contempt for America. Pepsi CEO Indra Nooyi compared the United States to a person’s middle finger.

“…in a commencement address at Columbia University’s business school, Ms. Nooyi compared five major continents to her hand with the U.S. representing the middle finger. In that talk, she said: “Each of us…must be careful that when we extend our arm in a business or political sense, we take pains to assure we are giving a hand…not the finger….Unfortunately, I think this is how the rest of the world looks at the U.S.”

Of course, right after Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2009 Pepsi ran ads with the phrase “It’s time for optimism” with a logo that was a rip off of the Obama logo. And Ms. Nooyi maintained her activist left-wing politics until stepping down as CEO
in 2018.

Pepsi Obama.JPG

Just this past June, Coca Cola joined other major corporations in demanding that social media banish conservative speech from their platforms.

Have you ever been called “racist” by a Democrat or the media for not being a leftist? Of course, you have. Left-wing activists use the terms “racist” and “conservative” interchangeably, and Coke CEO James Quincey is one of those left-wing activists. He wants you canceled and de-platformed.

"There is no place for racism in the world and there is no place for racism on social media," the drinks maker's chairman and CEO James Quincey said. He demanded "greater accountability and transparency" from social media firms. It came after Facebook said it would label potentially harmful or misleading posts left up for their news value.

And just this week, Nike and Coca-Cola Lobby Against Xinjiang Forced Labor Bill. Poor Coca-Cola, it may lose some of its low-cost suppliers who keep costs down with Chinese slave labor.

Oh, by the way, Coca Cola inventor John Pemberton was a Civil War veteran who actually owned slaves. That should have no bearing on the 21st Century company, but according to the rules of Coca Cola’s left-wing political allies, Coke is forever tainted by Pemberton’s original sin. Perhaps Coke should be hit by a crippling “Reparations Tax” too. At a minimum, Coke should have to change its name since “Coca Cola” was a name created by a slave-owning Confederate soldier. Their rules, not mine. I suggest “Karma-Cola”.

The problem with thinking that Coke and Pepsi get punished with a tax is that they raise prices and pass the tax on to the consumer.

And consumers will get pissed at Coke and Pepsi for being greedy for raising prices, not the government for forcing them to do so.

I've been making that point for years.

Say there's environmental laws that require a pre-construction site inspection with a flat cost of $50,000.

To something like WalMart, that's a drop in the bucket. They make that up in 2 seconds of national profits.

To a small business looking to get started, it's a crippling, unassailable barrier to market entry.

++++++++++++
What I find interesting is that the 49ers weren't forced to change their name, too. The Gold Rush - after which the team is named - was hugely important in terms of Western Expansion and, later, the transcontinental railroad and Manifest Destiny. It acted as a huge accelerator in the settlement of the American West, and that settlement was very destructive to the native peoples.

If the Redskins have to change their name for merely referencing American Indians, why do the 49ers - who celebrate the event that ultimately led to the demise of Americans Indians in the west - get to keep theirs?

Say there's environmental laws that require a pre-construction site inspection with a flat cost of $50,000.

To something like WalMart, that's a drop in the bucket. They make that up in 2 seconds of national profits.

To a small business looking to get started, it's a crippling, unassailable barrier to market entry.

Y'know, this reminds me of something deliciously ironic I saw several years ago. Shaquille O'Neil had a soda brand called "Soda Shaq" that was sold in the 7-11s near me. It was a pint can and used actual sugar instead of HFCS. It also had a lot of it. Like a whole lot. I did the math once and I think it came out to be somewhere around 20% more sugar than Coke.

And it was to support one of Shaq's charitable causes. That cause? Diabetes.

And consumers will get pissed at Coke and Pepsi for being greedy for raising prices, not the government for forcing them to do so.

Consumption of soda has fallen over the past few decades, driven in part by the ban of soda machines in most schools. So many of the companies have shifted and make their money on these soda alternatives. If any such tax extended to all of these, I could see some spinning off of certain lines, particularly at large conglomerates such as Pepsi.

208 Cook County Illinois implemented a soda tax a couple of years ago - it actually included all sugary beverages & diet beverages, unless the beverage was 100% juice.

The amount of anger generated by that tax was unbelievable. Because it was simply county-wide, the tax could be avoided by going outside the county. Grocers on the wrong side of the county line suffered, stores on the line in the other counties gained, because if you switch where you buy your beverages you might as well buy all of your groceries while you are there.

The County Board President who dreamed up this tax, Toni Preckwinkle, ran for mayor of Chicago two years ago. She ended up in a runoff with Lori Lightfoot. Preckwinkle lost, and many think that the beverage tax was the deciding factor.

It *is* cheaper than sugar - in the United States. We have very high sugar tariffs to protect the domestic sugar industry against the Caribbean and S. America. This raises the price of sugar here as compared to other countries in our hemisphere. Without those tariffs this wouldn't be true, but with them a processed industrial product ends up being cheaper than an agricultural one.

This is why the powers that be always try to scale up the bad idea and make it unavoidable. I suppose if you do the Newman/Kramer gambit it can work. But for most people it's kinda dumb. People forget the value of their time when doing things. It's like driving 15 minutes out of your way to a gas station that has gas 10 cents cheaper to fill up a 20 gallon tank. So basically you're valuing your time at $8/hr.

Oregon isn't raising taxes on beer and wine, since hip, trendy people drink beer and wine, but is raising the already enormously high taxes on hard liquor, since only icky people drink hard liquor.

There's a big liquor store smack on the California side of the California-Oregon border, where I load up on hard liquor coming back from California.

Hard liquor has to be the only thing that is less taxed in California than in Oregon.

But the only share holders of any importance are institutions for whom the shares in any one corporation is just a small piece of a large pie, and the CEOs of these institutions, themselves, get paid regardless of the performance of the portfolio.

So we have this kafka situation where most of the corporate value in this country -- nobody gives a shit about and it's all therefore eligible for sacrifice to the baal.

Sadly, the average idiot (50% of population) cannot make the correlation that a company will pass on any added costs to the consumer. See: $15 min wage. Even though they've probably done exactly the same thing when buying/selling items on eBay or Etsy.

I'm just hoping a combination of new recycling fees, the discovery that carbonated beverages add to global warming (you ready it here first), etc. finally have an effect on their bottom line as people stop buying the crap. And KFC, and taco bell, and pizza hut, and all of their garbage subsidiaries, killed with a combination of fat taxes and $20 min. wage (because who can survive on $15 an hour?).

Then, when pepsi and coke say they're going bankrupt, Uncle Sugar will bail them out. Too big to fail.

The ironic part is how the Olympics were originally supposed to be supra-national celebrations of athletic prowess, as an alternative to national chauvinism. Yet in its current manifestation, it's all about competition between nations, complete with flags, anthems, the lot.

I know he's a huge apple fanboi, but it's crazy to think that it's not following every single move you make unless you shut it off and stick it into a faraday box.

I saw Dylan open for the Dead at the Meadowlands in '94. It was Jerry's last NY concert before he died.

Jerry was terrible when I saw him - he had an awful voice that day. Dylan, on the other hand, was great. I wasn't a fan before, but I became more of one after that concert.

Ended up seeing him several times after that - usually opening for Phil and Friends and such. Dylan always has great side men touring with him, so if you aren't into his vocals (which have grown on me), you can hear some great musicianship as a bonus. Charlie Sexton was a very pleasant surprise, for instance.

It is. The diet Cherry Limeade and peach are good mixers.

I'd certainly feel better if the people behind it weren't the same ones that want to sterilize the planet. Moderna seems to have no such baggage. And, if it really is an ex Pfizer doc in charge of respiratory diseases (among others) making these claims, it certainly gives pause.

I'm old enough to remember thalidomide, and it was perfectly safe and tested over a much longer period of time before approval.

476 The tax the leftists want on soda is a consumption tax. You the purchaser will pay the tax for the privilege of buying the product. Not the company. The goal is to reduce consumption of soda. And since Pepsi and Cokes biggest sellers now are not sodas but bottled water and other flavored water they will be fine with it.

would any of you get it?
Posted by: Jack Burton, who says, I was born ready at December 07, 2020 03:12 PM (yx0HS)

Personally? I have a less than 1% chance of catching the virus and a much less than one percent chance of recovering if I do catch it. The vaccine actually poses a greater risk than that. I'm especially cautious since I personally know so many people who have had lasting health issues after flu or tDap vaccines.

I'm hoping that all the immunities I have from past vaccines serve me well the rest of my life, because I plan to not get any more. Maybe tetanus if I puncture myself, but I'm even hesitant on that one these days.

this virus doesn't kill 99.99% of the infected

you do get immunity from having caught it and probably have partial immunity to it from past corona virus infections

Yet there is going to be a world wide push for every person on earth to get a vaccination and yearly boosters.

The prior bird flus and swine flu's were much more deadly and did NOT excite this response. Why now?

If you are relatively young, and otherwise healthy, you would be well served to ask the question whether: You risk more with the vaccine than you do from the infection, which you very well may have already had and didn't even notice, and which can be effectively treated with therapeutics even if you are old and eat a lot of big mac's and drink twelve diet coke a day.

499 It *is* cheaper than sugar - in the United States.

Remember, when someone like Jeff Immelt says, "I think it's time to do away with outmoded regulations," what he means by _outmoded_ is "regulations that no longer confer competitive advantage on GE."
