Shock! Apple, Nike Lobby Against Cracking Down on Chinese Slave-Labor Factories That Make Their Shit

These are not American companies. They are corporate pirates with no nation.

LeBron James would be proud.

The New York Times reports that Apple, Nike, and Coca-Cola are among the many global companies and business groups lobbying Congress to weaken a bipartisan bill that cracks down on human rights abuses and forced labor in China.

"The bill also targets so-called poverty alleviation and pairing programs that ship Muslims from impoverished areas to work in factories elsewhere, which human rights groups say are often coercive."

For human rights supporters, the bill is great news. For companies that care about their bottom line first, it's terrible.

Whenever these transnational buccaneers do some evil shit, they immediately spring to repair their reputation with the hard left by running virtue-signaling commercials or punishing the right.

I expect them to run this play again. Expect more censorship from Apple against the right to appease the left for their own use of slaves to make their slave phones.

Meanwhile, functionaries of the Chinese Communist Party are pumping out crude terrorist-encouraging propaganda against the west, even as China Joe promises to treat them as allies:

Also, James Mattis -- he beloved by Know-Nothing NeverTrump Permanent Twitter Residents -- failed to acknowledge his ties to a firm that will make money off expanded trade with China when he was writing China-trade-boosting op-eds and planting them in major media.

n an online column denouncing President Trump's "America First" policy that includes measures regarding Beijing, ex-Defense Secretary James Mattis did not disclose his affiliation with an organization that fosters international business deals with communist China.

As coauthor with three other writers in a Nov. 23 Foreign Affairs column, Mattis did not mention that he works for the The Cohen Group consulting firm. Nor did he challenge China's tough talk against U.S. policies regarding Taiwan, nor the strict economic retaliation Beijing levied against Australia.

Instead, Mattis criticized Trump administration policies toward Beijing. Such policies, touted by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, are not in line with The Cohen Group's approach toward international business dealings with Beijing.

I don't want to let out any Deep State Secrets, but generals cannot wait to retire and began peddling influence to foreign countries.

A lot of generals provide "security consulting" to foreign countries. But this is widely known to be a sham. The foreign countries aren't really interested in what the generals have to say about security.

What they're interested in is paying them to be Friendly Forces for lobbying lawmakers and executive bureaucrats in DC, and assisting with information operations.

The claims about "security consulting" are in fact just a cover story to hide the fact that these men are in fact in the employ of foreign governments for the purposes of lobbying the US government. It's a lie designed to provide a legal defense if they should ever be prosecuted for failure to file as an agent of a foreign government.

It's a type of money laundering -- disguising the true commodity being sold for money by resort to a deceptive euphemism.

Mattis' op-ed was in fact an undisclosed paid advertisement for American corporations seeking to make money from China at the expense of the rest of America.

And it was also an information operation conducted on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party.

James Mattis, you might have forgotten -- if you ever avoided the media blackout about it -- was a pitchman for the gigantic stock fraud machine and criminal enterprise called Theranos.

Former Defense Secretary James Mattis is back in the public eye with a book to promote, doing interviews and speaking in public about his career in government service.

That’s a golden opportunity to finally ask some tough questions about his prior service on the board of Theranos, a company that allegedly peddled fake blood tests and peddled connections to influential people in the national security world to get away with it for years.

Theranos was one of the largest business scandals of the past decades, described by the Securities and Exchange Commission as an “elaborate, years-long fraud” in which CEO Elizabeth Holmes and President Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, “exaggerated or made false statements about the company’s technology, business, and financial performance.”

Mattis not only served on Theranos’s board during some of the years after he’d retired from military service, while it was perpetrating the scheme, but he earlier served as a key advocate of putting the company’s technology (technology that was, to be clear, fake) to use inside the military while he was still serving as a general. Holmes settled the SEC case, paying a $500,000 fee and accepting various other penalties, while Balwani is fighting it out in court. (Holmes and Balwani are both battling criminal fraud charges.)

Nobody on the board has been directly charged with anything. But accepting six-figure checks to serve as a frontman for a con operation is the kind of thing that would normally count as a liability in American politics.

St. James of Twitter Memes is not above a little corrupt feather-bedding.

Or even a lot of it.

These people are all corrupt.

All of them.

They are the most prominently responsible for slave labor, so if you want to argue "I don't know who to trust, and who to condemn," start there.

93 I disagree slightly with the premise of your post.

Corporations have always been "nationless". They are companies which exist to delight their customers by providing the best goods or services to them at the lowest possible price while maintaining profit margins so they can grow their business.

Yes, China is a horrible actor. They are despicable. Nike and Apple are two-faced little bitches.

But, so is any US company that has to try and do business in China because the Chinese government forces them to be that way-and the company wants to pursue a profit motive so it's not so black and white.

With regard to the photo, it's despicable and they ought to say something. With regard to "regular Chinese business practices", it's awfully hard. Remember, Google simply pulled out and Facebook barely operates in China. They are hardly what I would call "stand up companies" who toe a moral line.

What is a corporation? Just an ownership structure imparting limited liability.

Who runs the megacorps? Executives, not shareholders. Who's driving the show? Again, executives. And no, they aren't blind automatons pursuing profit for their shareholders. Individuals making choices.

I doubt they can extricate themselves from China's clutches at this point, and I don't know how hard their pols are trying. No doubt a Biden Administration won't help them do so.

What is heart breaking about it is that Tyler Schultz, George Schultz's grandson, was one of the people who first tried to blow the whistle on all of it. George Schultz was on the board.

George Schultz more or less disowned his grandson over it, iirc. All because the grandson acted in accordance with the ethics you would hope his family were the ones to teach him.

"Changes in U.S. corporate government practices over the last 25 years have increased companies' focus on short term profits, as we have moved from a stakeholder to shareholder basis of capitalism. The Chinese have benefited from this change. Under the previous stakeholder based capitalism, which governed U.S. corporations from WWII until around 1985, CEO's were charged with creating value for shareholders, lenders, employees, communities, and so on

For example, the Business Roundtable, a forum that represented CEO's, stated in 1981 that "the long term viability of the corporation depends upon its responsibility to the society of which it is a part". That view changed in the 1980's spurred on by Milton Friedman and others affiliated with the "Chicago school" of free market economists who argued the "only social responsibility of business is to increase its profits".

This movement exerted serious impact on corporate behavior when CEOs compensation began to be tied to their ability to increase shareholder value and the compensation of CEOs "soared to previously unheard of heights."

By coming together globally to continue to promote the objective, cooperative, coordinated, equitable environmentally-conscious and generally tolerant regime of integrated social and economic progress worldwide, Biden and his team will be able to continue to build upon the great groundwork led by his Democratic predecessor and Bill Clinton - and, to a lesser degree, George W. I guess that is environmental, social, corporate governance.

I'd suppose SJW globalist version of "stakeholder" is a corrupted version of the original intent. Stakeholder in my view, puts more social responsibility at the company level, as opposed to depending on government or the consumer to choose "made in America".

Most privately held companies in smaller towns, for instance, have a lot of involvement with community theater, parks, whatever ... local and practical support of their workers. SJW is not that ... and the global corp of Google and the rest is completely separate from the consumer, wants to control the consumer.

Unfortunately the passive investor has poured his local paycheck profits into these globalist/leftist BigTech control Korps. All for bottom line profit at any social cost.

356 > Second, it's these Fascist corporations are the ones who are giving Capitalism a bad reputation.

I saw an article recently about how the Puritans abandoned socialism to survive, and yet the article's description on their situation (what with investors, shares, and so on) sounded more like degenerate capitalism. It got me thinking.

An ideal economic situation is one where the people, individually, own the means of production. It's more a rule of thumb than an iron law -- employees (especially if they are working toward independence) or small partnerships, especially among family, can work. Basically, a nation where the majority of adults owns their own business, and employment is either a stepping stone for the young, or a fallback for people with mental or social problems, is best.

Socialism failed because it forgot the "individually" and allowed all capital to fall into the hands of a small clique of power-mad psychopaths. Capitalism failed because it forgot "the people", and basically ended up in the same place by another route. There are many roads that lead to Hell, after all.

2016 proved that the GOPe doesn't have a whole lot of control over the base.

The next Republican nominee was always going to be a reaction to Trump, but the central question was whether the Republican electorate considered Trump a success or a failure.

I think it's safe to assume that the Republican electorate considers Trump a success, so the next nominee is more likely to be modeled off of Trump (if not Trump himself) than a Jeb Bush.

401 351 "ESG is an example of "stakeholder" capitalism. I would wager this is
another example of presenting the cause of a problem as the solution."

Posted by: illiniwek at November 30, 2020 05:20 PM (Cus5s)

Stakeholder capitalism seems to be an excuse for executives to do what they want. Friedman's academic position was mostly relevant to lawsuits when executives were acting against shareholder interests (blowing money on frivolous or stupid things, not failing to take certain actions in most cases).

In reality, the agent, the executives, are the ones making decisions. By obfuscating their duty of loyalty and care to be a variety of nebulous third parties, they're able to do as they please. You won't find CEOs advocating anything but stakeholder capitalism.

But it's shockingly poorly built as a story. Stuff is all out of order, but you do get gruesome violence. So there's that.

474 Maybe Sidney Powell has focus.

If there were a Republican Party, or a Trump Party that had serious people on staff, the first thing that would be done is to make a video that explains the voting process. From start to finish.

Then, at certain points, the video would interject what occurred in this election.

It would use charts and grafts, with circles and arrows and paragraphs explaining what each one was.

It's hard to explain fraud if the people don't know the first thing about the process.

It was a firehose and no I don't believe the cyber angle is concrete. It may be true but it isn't concrete. We are asking these men and woman to risk their lives to countermand the fraud and send us their electors. Stats and network tracing isn't viscerally convincing enough to do it.

The Branynard stuff is. That's why the FBI is knocking on his door. The affidavits of poll workers not being allowed to observe is. There is enough white on black fraud in AZ, even without signature verification, to turn this thing.

Frankly, on a visceral level, the performance metric comparisons between the rest of the country vs. the particular counties in the swing states is more compelling.

It was firehose of concrete and non concrete all in one, and yes id does look like it was mostly uncoordinated. My guess is that they are way, way understaffed relative to the workload. They are operating across, what, six state jurisdictions.

Bottom line though is that the main show is what goes on behind close doors, the discussions between team Trump and the state GOP legislatures. Hopefully, these discussions involve some serious combination of carrots and sticks and security guarantees.

Every Sicilian-American mom and grandma had a jar in her kitchen. Then one day, China flooded the market with theirs. They are teeny tiny, taste like crap, are usually stale and are very cheap. The pignoli nuts from Italy, Spain and Portugal skyrocketed in price and were almost impossible to find for decades. Just now I'm seeing some pignoli from Spain in the supermarket. Still more expensive than the Chinese ones, but there is no comparison between the two.

546 It's hilarious. They spent billions on Marvel and Star Wars and now COVID hit and they're borrowing from anywhere and everywhere to keep themselves afloat. They've destroyed brand value, their IPs are destroyed, and they can't even prop themselves up with Walt's legacy, the parks and old library stuff.

They have no one to blame but themselves. They bought Marvel and Star Wars (and Indiana Jones) because some of the management realized they had stopped making anything that appealed to boys.

Then they handed Star Wars to someone who hated it AND hated men. Marvel resisted the Siren's song of wokeness until their original story arc was almost completely wrapped up, but now they're all-in.

They apparently decided that the in-park Star Wars lands would NOT have anything specifically from the original movies or prequels -- even the version of the Millenium Falcon is from the sequels -- and went all-in on the sequels.

Oh, and they bankrolled the Avatar sequels.

I think they're in as bad a shape as the company was just before Snow White was released. They're playing with bigger numbers, but unless they pull out a miracle, they've destroyed their own brand.

When their "Mission:Space" ride opened, they started with some real Golden Age hard science fiction for sale in the gift shop. It made sense -- the ride was the same thing that showed up in multiple stories of the period. Now? It's the same mix of merchandise as all the other gift shops at Walt Disney World.

Strange, it struck me as a show that tried to display wildly different cultures while trying to see both the good and bad sides of each (which is why there are both heroes and villains from each "nation"), and giving some realistic thought as to how space travel would affect humanity. I thought, at least in the first season, it was decent hard-ish scifi.

It did start to lose me when one group of protagonists randomly ran into a second group of protagonists right in the middle of the solar system, because the plot needed it to happen. I was thinking... do you get just how big space is? I'd have trouble buying that coincidence in a small town.

The Supreme Court has a clear path to reverse the unconstitutional theft of the 2020 election without disenfranchising a single vote. You read that right.
Obviously, SCOTUS has mountains of evidence to rule that Constitutionally protected State election laws were violated on an immense scale. And the following remedy is fully within its power:
The mail-in ballot counts of each law-breaking county (example, Pittsburgh) are voided due to massive ballot spoilage caused by that county's grossly unconstitutional actions.
SCOTUS further rules that any county which mixed its invalid mail-in ballots with its valid ballots chose to undertake unnecessary and easily avoidable actions which tainted and nullified that county's entire ballot count.
Note that this does NOT void the millions of valid ballots cast and legally counted in the contested State. However, it does void that State's CURRENT certification of election results until and unless that State chooses to re-tabulate its results but excluding the illegal mail-in ballot counts as per Constitutionally protected State election law.

The State does not have to re-certify. It is free to do nothing and thereby opt out of participating in the electoral college. That's entirely up the that State.
Regardless, the millions of valid votes which were cast in each contested State remain perfectly intact, legal, and eligible for State certification.
SCOTUS does not invalidate nor disenfranchise as single vote anywhere. The Court simply puts the burden of legally and Constitutionally certifying a State's election results back where it belongs. That is, the responsibility for legally certifying a State's election results is put back on the State itself.
