15 I know I made this philistinic point the other day concerning Van Gogh, but to me, Degas also suffers from being overexposed. This is the sort of painting that gets reproduced onto posters and tote bags.

Not that it isn't beautiful, just that familiarity breeds contempt.

55 Look how Degas uses space. The dominant element is line, specifically the line of dancers that starts at the bottom left and rises steeply to the upper right. It also recedes quickly to create depth. This tells me that the room is large and spacious, but he hides that by cropping the picture in the center of the room. We see only two walls instead of three. Degas THEN COUNTERS THIS with the mirror on the left wall. We see the rest of the background. We see the rest of the dancers waiting on the bleachers, and we see a window looking out onto the city street (Paris, most likely).

While the picture has a busy, cramped feel at first, the mirror opens up the space. While most of the work is static, except for one or two dancers actually dancing, the steep, deep diagonal creates drama and movement--with my eyes.

94 I like the way Degas captured the near anarchy of so many young girls doing their own thing: a leg movement, a pose, taking direction, everything is areas of movement. Against this are the straight lines of the wall, cornice, and floor boards. Also, the colors are soft and provide a gentle background for the areas of activity, mostly bright white. It is very effective.

IIRC, Degas helped in the development of modern pastels, which wins a place in my heart. Pastels are a fascinating medium.

I've been told, by those in the know, that although ballerinas are very supple and that, if you're straight and in a corps de ballet, they practically throw themselves at you, ballerinas' feel are the ugliest you will ever find, due to the wear and tear of dancing.

Which makes me wonder about all those fin de siecle Russian aristocrats who would take a prima ballerina as a mistress to educate them in the arts of love.

Heh. Clumsy dancers.

One night I was sitting in an orchestra pit (with my cello) as we began a performance of West Side Story.

The opening scene, if you'll recall, involves dancers engaged in the portrayal of a gang fight.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a trash can came flying into the orchestra pit and landed on the 1st clarinetist's head, roughly six feet from where I was sitting.

The pit orchestra never skipped a beat.

Somewhat dazed, she collected herself and rejoined the performance.

I kid ye not.

Houston Independent School District Says 42% of Students Failed at Least One Class During First Grading Period

Posted by: rhennigantx at December 02, 2020 10:02 AM (JFO2v)

147 Sorry to hijack the art thread so soon after the 100 post threshold but I had a wild thought about the 12th amendment. I'd love if whig or some other person who seems more knowledgeable than me could opine on this.

So the 12th amendment was ratified to clean up the mess of having a President from one party and a vice president from an opposing party (originally being the runner up in the electoral college). As a result of the 12th, the president and vice president are ticketed together and elected as a pair. How are they elected? It says...

The Twelfth Amendment stipulates that each elector must cast distinct votes for president and vice president, instead of two votes for president. Additionally, electors may not vote for presidential and vice-presidential candidates who both reside in the elector's state--at least one of them must be an inhabitant of another state.

If no candidate for president has a majority of the total votes, the House of Representatives, voting by states and with the same quorum requirements as under the original procedure, chooses the president. The Twelfth Amendment requires the House to choose from the three highest receivers of electoral votes, compared to five under the original procedure.

The Twelfth Amendment requires a person to receive a majority of the electoral votes for vice president for that person to be elected vice president by the Electoral College. If no candidate for vice president has a majority of the total votes, the Senate, with each senator having one vote, chooses the vice president. The Twelfth Amendment requires the Senate to choose between the candidates with the "two highest numbers" of electoral votes. If multiple individuals are tied for second place, the Senate may consider them all. The Twelfth Amendment introduced a quorum requirement of two-thirds of the whole number of senators for the conduct of balloting. Furthermore, the Twelfth Amendment requires the Senate to choose a vice president by way of the affirmative votes of "a majority of the whole number" of senators.

That's all stuff we know and have opined about a lot over the past month. But it gets weird when you keep reading...

To prevent deadlocks from keeping the nation leaderless, the Twelfth Amendment provided that if the House did not choose a president before the first day of a presidential term, the individual elected vice president would "act as President, as in the case of the death or other constitutional disability of the President". The Twelfth Amendment did not state for how long the vice president would act as president or if the House could still choose a president after March 4. Section 3 of the Twentieth Amendment, adopted in 1933, clarifies that the vice president-elect would only "act as President" if the House has not chosen a president by January 20, and permitting Congress to statutorily provide "who shall then act as President, or the manner in which one who is to act shall be selected" if there is no president-elect or vice president-elect by January 20. It also clarifies that if there is no president-elect on January 20, whoever acts as president does so until a person "qualified" to occupy the presidency is elected to be president.

The last line is key: If there is no winner in the presidential election in the house, then the VP elected in the senate serves as acting President, and does so until a person "qualified" is "elected" as President. If you're wondering, I think the consensus is, if there is no winner in the VP election either, then the presidency falls to the speaker of the house. That's not the point though. The point is the constitution provides, under one scenario, the idea of a temporary president serving until a person "qualified" is "elected" as President.

What the amendment does not do, however, is provide a framework for determining who and how a person in that case becomes qualified to be President. It also, however, does not limit the means of achieving the qualification.

In other words, there is, deep in the rabbit hole of scenarios, a way in which we could have a second presidential election, as a means of determining the person qualified to be elected.

Concur. Many years ago, before "progress", the burning times and the Big Tech clampdown, I used to read Walter in what was known then as a "newspaper".

No, it's true! A paper you could read with actual news and opinions printed on sheets of paper.

I found almost everything he wrote to be spot on and correct and the man actually enlarged my world view.

RIP Mr. Williams and Thank You.

187 Degas was fascinated with the way bodies bend in dancing. He also did a sculpture, The Little Fourteen Year Old Dancer, which, besides being an interesting mix of media, really emphasizes the contortions required in certain ballet poses. I like that sculpture because it captures the emotions perfectly. Got to see it at the Musee d'Orsay years ago.

(I think I've told this story here before, but we also got to see Manet's Olympia, one of my all time favorite paintings, and I remember another tourist who clearly was unfamiliar with the painting coming face to face with it and giving an audible gasp. She stuck around to listen to my teacher's mini lecture on it.)

That seems kinda cancel culturish.

Its a valid opinion. It could be a WRONG opinion.

I count trolling as shitposting - posting something for the specific purpose of angering or demoralizing.

A troll might propose not voting for Georgia Republican senators for the purpose of demoralization.

But people can be actually, genuinely, demoralized, and post that, too.

Didja read JJ's thread? Right now, there are 10% of the GOP Senators thinking, hey, you know what's important right now? Figuring out how to amnesty illegal aliens with the Democrats.

So, yeah, it "matters" whether Georgia elects two Republicans or not.

We call someone who does that a Democrat or a "troll" when they proclaim to be Republican and simply don't support any material thing they do, or they throw a bone every so often to try and throw people off the troll scent. You need to be better than that with a lot of the lurkers around here who actually go back and at what people post.

Unless you draw factory duty. That's gonna' suck. But again - plenty of exercise. And the constant threat of loss of limb should break up the monotony. The city has been on a Jihad against car ownership since the early 2000s through increased registration fees, reduction of available parking, etc. But part of my deal working there was I'd be provided compensation for a car as well as parking at work.

Driving in Paris is a fun adventure. Outside the city, the expressways are excellent. You'll be hard pressed to find a pothole anywhere. Of course gas is also $7-8 a gallon but at least the money is well spent.

Posted by: BurtTC at December 02, 2020 10:00 AM (hku12)

*Dons SJW art theorist hat*

The reason for this is because Degas was a classist. Back in the day, theatre people were seen as having lower standards and bad reputations. Degas paints his young, female dancers to look more simian, to underscore the uncivilized, unrespectable nature of their class, social rank, and job.

*Doffs SJW art theorist hat*

I am not making that up. I really heard this during a class once. They used his "Little Dancer-Age 14" sculpture to argue this.

Ah, thanks! That would explain it.

I've seen some of his other works, where the people are patrons, I assume bars and such, where the faces are equally distorted. Both men and women, but if I recall correctly, the women seemed to get it worse.

Incidentally, one of my favorite artists, JMW Turner, his scenery is almost otherworldly in how he seems to create colors and shadings that no one else can duplicate.

Couldn't draw humans to save his life though. Turns out, the guy was pretty much a misanthrope.

I suspect the two facts are quite related.

One of the hard lessons learned here is that pretty much anyone exposed to the swamp long enough becomes of the swamp. I truly understand why that lesson is so bitterly rejected by some - it would require a complete shift in their world view. It would mean the swamp can't be drained from within. It would mean they can't hope to build noble, powerful legal and political structures dedicated to the performance of good. Those notions are completely antithetical to those that believe in a world that is both orderly, just, and free. In short, it's opposite to the advertising and branding of the GOP.

I was never really "with" the GOP, so I fully understand that it's easier for me to say to Hell with them than others that have personally invested decades of their lives supporting them. Whenever anybody staunchly supports an organization that long, they truly to put a piece of themselves into that group.

--------

I suppose. I was "with them" from childhood. Shit, they even gave me some money to attend college after seeing me crush lefties to dust in HS debates and papers. I worked for several of their legislators in the State Capitol during my early twenties.

But somewhere along the line, you've gotta say "enough is enough."

It took me a process of about seven or eight years, though. It's hard to face up to that amount of wasted time and effort. For me it started with that job at the Capitol. Watching these people from inside their machine made me realize something was... wrong.

By the time late '14/early '15 rolled around, I realized "no, *everything* is wrong." That's when I walked.

If that means I'm a troll, then fine. I'm ok with that label.

If there was no fraud, Raffesperger would not have forbidden a recheck of signatures. If there was no fraud, independent researcher and citizen journalists would not have found thousand of illegal registrations where people had moved out or state or were declaring a UPS mailbox as their physical address.

We can't fight like the Left because we control nothing. They control gov't, media, the press, academia, and law enforcement. Big money and tech back them. Run any of the scams the establishment does and you'll find the DOJ at your door. Have a peaceful protest and either be ignored or vilified by the press. Try a little street action and you'll find out how effective they are locking things down when they want to. Plus, again be vilified in media. You'll even get a miniseries and special reports highlighting how evil you are. Recognize we've lost and now is the time to regroup with a different goal and achievable aims.

Stalingrad was just a symbolic target with very little strategic value. Germany need the Black Sea oil regions desperately to fuel their war machine, although it's doubtful the could have restored production in time after sabotage and with constant bomber attacks.

I'm in NJ, I sit it out anyway. If Georgia GOP is pushing election fraud, why help fund it. Brian Kemp's org has sent me many dozens of emails and texts begging for donations, while he pushes hard to render the vote useless. Nope, packing SCOTUS will not make it "better", but I do see some of the GOP we already have crossing over to vote for this nonsense if it helps them financially.

As for great GOP like Barr, may his name be erased, these great bulwarks against illegal actions failed to act against illegal actions on many fronts.

But if you think Stacy Abrams and Dominion will play fair this time, because they love divided government, go ahead and donate.

I think Marcus T should stop the name calling, but I have come to accept that calling me names is OK here.

The Sixth Army should have disobeyed orders and made an orderly retreat after it became apparent that Stalin had reserves that were not even suspected to exist, or at the least fought to break out of the encirclement and link up with the Fourth Panzer when it tried to break in. Virtually everyone in the Sixth ended up dying in Siberia.

A fully Dem Senate will not be overly concerned about political pressure.

Past Republican Senates were, simply because they agreed to stipulate that Obama was a wildly popular figure and did not care to stand in the way of his judge nominations. I think that stipulation was unwise given what we know now, but that was in the terms the GOP agreed to.

I wouldn't compare them to what we're looking at with provable fraud happening with mail in ballots, Dominion chicanery, and so on. Having that fact changes the battle space.

It was well thought out, pointing out to me the fact that Michigan Law requires an audit AFTER certification, LOL. Brilliant. And now our Soros owned AG will be auditing certain sections of the vote, but it will only be to improve things in the future, and will not overturn the results.

She said that President Trump had 48 hours to request an audit post election and he did not do that.

My question is when do you start counting the timeline? Since Michigan didn't finish counting votes for days, then immediately put a vote in to certify, when is that 48 hour period of time?

I guess I can forward a copy of it to Trump's legal team.

Have not received a reply from my Senate Republican rep.

Then you don't understand it. Continuing to invest limited resources in a battle that's already lost is counter-productive, no different than continuing to call and raise when you have the lesser poker hand. To some here, the GOP has successfully demonstrated itself to be part of the political problem. To those posters, continuing to support the GOP - via a voting process that has not only been demonstrated to be rigged, but rigged with the GOP's tacit support, is a foolish exercise that only prolongs the problem. They can point to today's news, of yet another GOP / DNC collaboration on amnesty, to support their position.

Their position is not foolish. It is completely logical. Your outburst is also understandable - you are dedicated to the existence of the GOP. As I said earlier - we will inevitably self-sort here. One side that will stay with the GOP until the end, and another that will walk away.

I'll say it now. This schism will end with the divide of you and Ace. He's already walking away. He was walking away four years ago - only Trump pulled him back. Ace is a pretty good microcosm of many - he's no longer a Republican. He's a Trumpian. There is a huge difference.

Unless you draw factory duty. That's gonna' suck. But again - plenty of exercise. And the constant threat of loss of limb should break up the monotony. You could shoot for household domestic duty - but that could be a roll of the dice, especially if you're the type to draw attention from the master of the house. Or a juvenile. Or both.

I believe the Progs will attempt to use unions as un-fenced gulags. If/when the Dems have the Presidency, House, and Senate, they'll enact laws requiring almost every working person to join a union. (Unknown if SCOTUS will play along.) Then they can use the union as enforcers of right-think, at least in the workplace, threatening to revoke your membership if you do not comply. Not having a union card, or having been blackballed by any union, will mean no job.

Concurrent with the workplace/union crap, they'll ramp-up indoctrination in schools, and encourage kids to rat-out parents and anyone else, for racist, anti-transgender, etc., talk. Which will be reported to your local union boss, and you know the rest of the story.

431 From a game theory perspective, if you live in Georgia, you should go ahead and vote for the Republican Senators. It doesn't cost you anything, and if the cheat happens, it happens. And if, with the increased scrutiny, by some minor chance, the cheat is avoided, maybe there are a couple more Republican Senators so the slide will slow, somewhat.

But for those of us outside of Georgia it really doesn't matter all that much. A Republican Senate majority will near-unanimously vote for a Ruth Bader Ginsburg. They will approve every single one of Biden's nominees, even the ones that called them racists and Nazis. They will stop the wall and amnesty millions of illegal aliens. Maybe they stop court packing, but maybe not.

So that is where we are.

If you are in Georgia, vote for them. But none of us should get too emotionally invested in it.

This is indeed a powerful argument and not easily dismissed.

I will argue that battlefield has changed so radically that we need time to regroup and come up with a strategy and GOP senate at the very least puts a stop to this volley.

We need time to process this and come up with a way forward. To see if we can get any political leaderhip out of Trump (should he not get in) and the viability of taking over parts of the GOP from the right.

There are a number of very worthy grassroots organizations that we have given little love but can have a very big impact.

We may have allies among the population that were formally democrat. And nobody is going to like what we have in store for us.

But, in any case, I think it's shortsighted to advocate for this position publicly. If one must retreat, then they should do so secretly.

We outnumber the enemy forces.

Another thought - warfare is based on both direct and indirect actions. Voting at this point is arguably an indirect action, in that it forces the enemy to do certain things. We force them to do those things so as to gain an advantage....

I have been on both sides of the issue but now I think the investigation was botched so badly (or on purpose, whatever) that it is now impossible to know the true facts of the event and make an informed judgement. Evidence was lost and badly mishandled by the Feds. As a result, I think it is impossible now to know what really happened.

Yes, I think that is part of the strategy. Create enough doubt, leave clues here and there, demonstrate the futile efforts of those who want to get the truth, and then when they get too close, discredit them as conspiracy kranks.

So in the end, nobody knows for sure. And those who just want to get on with their lives, they shrug and turn away.

Funny how that parallels where we are today.

By the way, the book I'm reading on the RFK murder, it's a slow slow slog, because the author is giving details about all the people who were there that night, whose actions are at least suspicious, and who MIGHT have been part of a large group that pulled off the job through feints and misdirections and dopplegangers, and...

The book is called "A Lie Too Big To Fail," by Lisa Pease. I'd like to recommend the book, but you REALLY have to want to get into the nitty gritty of his murder to actually warrant reading it.

That's what these two GA senators represent - a play for time. Do you want all the pain now ? Or do you want to postpone the pain for a bit ? Blaster makes a good point, I think - it costs you nothing to vote - but it's foolish to get emotionally invested in the outcome. Similarly - it's foolish to get some emotionally invested regarding those who are walking away from a rigged game - and the game is certainly rigged. 484 i'll believe there was a death threat when someone ends up dead.

The people that they *need* to be worried about are the ones not actually making the threats.

For every idiot out there making an actual threat, they probably figure there are a handful that feel the same exact way as the threat-maker, but aren't saying a thing. *Those* people might act instead of talk.

It's like complaints at a business. If you hear one complaint, you can be sure that there are 20 people that are just as upset, but haven't said anything.

I've served as a judge of election at a polling place for 8 years now. The problems with the ballot tampering aren't at the polling place, it's later at the receiving stations/counting stations/whatever they call them. It's where the voted ballots & unvoted blank ballots & thumb drives of ballots & memory cards and the other election materials are taken to be processed after the polls close.

That's where the election observers in those 6 states where the massive cheating took place were denied entry, the pipes burst so the observers were kicked out but the cheating went on full speed, the windows were blocked out, etc.

Like I said from the get - I believe the misplay was letting the calendar keep running while Trump's team got ready for their big day in court. If he would have disclosed everything he had by the weekend - we'd have fearful politicians gladly cooperating with the biggest voter fraud crackdown in history by now.

Yes - that would cause civil unrest, and I'm sure that's what his advisors argued against. But what we're heading for instead is an orderly decline into never having a straight election that awards a victory to an outsider candidate again. At best, what we'll get is the UniParty - where maybe the DNC doesn't completely dominate the GOP.

Hardly, I just deeply, deeply, fundamentally disagree with the assertion that they are in any way aligned with the Right. They are aligned with themselves. And to the extent that their aligned with anyone else, they strongly prefer the Democrats to the filthy right-wing base of their own party.

The Republicans are the center-left, and we have no Right Party whatsoever, anymore. And in a bicameral system that so lends itself to a two-party system, that means if we want one, the center-left party must be cannibalized in order for it to succeed.

If they are never going to serve our interests ahead of the Party we putatively compete against together, then we need to leave and form our own, and let them join and accept the subordinate role, or go home to their Democrats.

It has nothing to do with intelligence.

Influencers influence. All sorts of entities pay gazillions of dollars sending influencers out there to influence whomever needs to be influenced.

Hence, advertising, lobbyists, carnival barkers, and so on and so forth.

Whenever I see someone say "none of that stuff has any effect on me," I just figure they've been influenced to believe that.

This is not given at all. At all.

It's in the hands of the state legislatures to secure the voting process. These legislatures are GOP and have as much to fear from a corrupt vote in the mid to long term as Trump had in the near.

Just because they lack the courage to do what's needed now, in the face of an apparent electoral victory buttressed by a media manufactured consensus and in implied thread on person from Antifa jackboots, doesn't mean that they cannot be moved to take corrective action to secure the vote.

The response to the threat when the cameras stop running will tell us what we need to know about that, but until that point, we simply cannot know and we should not give up preemptively.

Yes. Also, you have to buy your individual plan through the marketplace set up by Barky Care, and if you are unemployed (meaning you don't have an income) you are not permitted to purchase a plan, and you are dumped into your state's Medicaid plan.

This happened to a friend's child who lost her job & insurance earlier this year. Since she did not have income, she was not permitted to purchase a plan and was forced onto Medicaid. Parents were not allowed to give her money, and her savings could not be used to purchase a plan. No job = public option only

He made good representations of possible outcomes. He argued substantive positions. What happened in return? He was attacked with fallacies and illogic. That appears to be deliberate and it's a pattern here. It's pretty easy to see who is behind it and understand their motives. Georgia is top on the troll list because Democrats understand it's the only thing that stands in the way of absolute power. Think about that for a moment and then go read CBD's posts. 588 The Republicans are the center-left, and we have no Right Party whatsoever, anymore.

Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at December 02, 2020 11:12 AM (BvLWD)

And this is where we disagree. The Republican party is not center left. For heaven's sake we just had two years of the Republicans stopping an impeachment ( remember almost every single member of the House Republicans voted against impeachment, and only one Senator voted for it, and he has been shunned now by literally everyone in the party, including the Utah party reps). We have had a steady stream of judges confirmed , over the constant objections of the Democrats, which has realigned several appeals courts and helped move the SC to a more solid constitutional footing. McConnell has refused to take up many many dumbass bills from the Dem. House, including the last spending bill for Covid relief that included funding museums, planned parenthood, and bailing out cities, even though it meant not getting money to small businesses and individuals. I could go on and on, but the point it, despite having squishes in the Republican congress, the vast majority have voted for right of center interests.

And many of the moderate sellouts who were there when Obama was in the WH, are not there now. McCain is one.

Make preparations for ______. This involves making sure that you're armed, have food, water, and energy available, and moving to metaphorical high ground, ie an area where conflict wouldn't be as much against your neighbors. At some point you're going to have to make a choice.

Local elections, particularly in certain states, will still have some meaning. Ideally things play out with the federal authority's ability to get anyone to give a shit about what it says declining, which would likely mean things dissolving into a conflict between the states, at least initially.

The fraud isn't universalized yet(though the federal government could very well try to implement it more broadly), and there are some states that should be relatively clean. Modern nullification is a good start.

If the quirky delegating, maybe they can make a fuckin difference. The best stuff these days is coming from people with cell phones doing their best to get past the velvet ropes. OReilly et al have the clout. They are not using it.

608 I went to school with the son one of the co founders of alpha 66, that arose from the leading resistance front to the castro regime, who came from opponents to batista, The father that said 'maurice bishop' had been in contact with oswald,
he was 'jammed up' with a narcotic charge, for a few years,

kid was kind of a punk, my high school had folks whose parents had been in the special forces, had flown in the congo against guevara. now garrison's dumpsterfire came from soviet dezinforma planted in french and italian papers, and other efforts uncovered in the mitrokhin archives, bob baer, did a deep dive into the evidence with acoustic evidence that revealed there could not have been a shot from the grassy knoll, that oswald acted alone however he may not have been independent,

Judicial nominations and stopping impeachment are not "conservative," or right-wing. Those were bare-minimal procedural expectations of a Senate majority, for Pete's sake. And they didn't even do well on that procedural stuff, slow-rolling or blocking anyone Trump wanted for his own government, refusing to adjourn, etc. They allowed the Democrats to run wild with investigations, offering the weakest resistance feasible. Mitch also killed 75% of the bills from the GOP House (the ones that got past Ryan). I could go on and on.

Trump's agenda. on the other hand, *is* conservative. And the GOP halted every part of it save for a moderate tax reform.

611 OK. I've seen people here repeating it, but not providing any source information. There weren't any reports or announcements showing up on any Internet searches.

Not terribly enthusiastic. His greatest contribution if he loses is to develop and promote younger conservative warriors like Ric Grenell and Candace Owens.

It can't be repo'd, I have things to do!

The left suffers from pathological denial of reality.
That is part of the reason they react with such rage towards those of us who dare to inject reality into their fantasy world.

614 Watching the GOP not fight this obvious fraud I think we are at the point where soon we find out if all the Q stuff is true and Trump is really the front for the military or not. If it's true we are going to need a hard military coup to get these political gritters removed regardless of "party"...if it's not true, we are boned. Can't fight the system legally if the whole supposed system of "two parties" actually has the same goals.

617 410 By the way, I just received a very lengthy reply letter back from my Democrat representative in the Michigan House in response to the letter I wrote just after the election pointing out the obvious fraud going on in Detroit.

-------------------

"She said that President Trump had 48 hours to request an audit post election and he did not do that."

If those were her words then she is incorrect.

MI law states a candidate must request a RECOUNT within 48 hours, not an audit, and yes, Trump did not request a recount.

Why?

A [highly credible African American female] witness at the hearing yesterday stated the reason why Trump Team didn't request a recount was for the simple reason that over 70% of the MI vote cannot be recreated due to decades old (e.g. entrenched) electioneering incompetence in the largest voting jurisdictions.

In her words, it would have been simply a fruitless waste of money.
