The Queen's Gambit

If you have access to Netflix, and you're not watching The Queen's Gambit, you should. Based on the novel of the same name, the plot of this 7-episode adaptation concerns a girl, orphaned at a young age, who develops into a chess genius while along the way struggling with her inner demons of alcohol and prescription drug abuse.

It gets the chess milieu right in the same way that Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings adaptations got Tolkien's Middle Earth milieu right, and by that I mean by no means perfect, but reasonably close enough, and there's plenty of fan service for the nerds. In this case, the chessboards are set up right and it looks like they're playing actual games. In fact, some chess experts have spotted famous games used in some of the scenes.

The problem with a movie about chess is that you have to make it look more exciting than it actually is. Chess is not really a spectator sport. Because a typical tournament game might last 1-2 hours or even longer, that's tough to show dramatically. So a lot of the games in TQG look like they're playing speed chess. But it's not terribly annoying and the YouTube clip above shows one way the director used to solve this problem: a montage that does a good job showing progress through the rounds of a tournament, helped along by a kickass soundtrack.

So all in all, I think it's a pretty good chess-themed series, even for non-players, and well worth your time.

Advanced Problem - White To Play (1234)

In order to win this game, White needs to force a capture of the black queen. How can this be accomplished?

Problem Solutions

Beginner Problem - White To Play

20201121 - Problem 1.jpg
4r3/7R/1p1b1pp1/p5k1/4r1P1/1PPKNRP1/1P6/8 w - - 0 1

1.Rf5+ gxf5

...and that's how the g-pawn is deflected, which makes possibly a rook check followed by mate:

2.Rg7+ Kh6
3.Nxf5#

Intermediate Problem - White To Play

20201121 - Problem 2.jpg
3rk2r/pp3ppp/nqpQp3/8/4B3/2PR4/1P3PPP/4R1K1 w k - 0 1

1. Bxc6+! bxc6

Best take the bishop with the pawn. If 1...Qxc6 then 2.Qxd8#

Blocking with the rook leads to a quicker mate: 1...Rd7 2.Rxe6+ (or 2.Qxd7+ Kf8 3.Qe8#) 2...Kd8 3.Qxd7#

2.Rxe6+ fxe6
3.Qxe6+ Kf8
4.Rf3# 1-0

Advanced Problem - White To Play

20201121 - Problem 3.jpg
8/8/8/8/4k3/2q5/6K1/3Q1N2 w - - 0 1

The key is to use your knight and queen to force Black to have to choose between a knight fork or a skewer that will win the queen.

1. Ng3+! Ke5

Other possibilities lose quickly

1...Kf4 2. Ne2+ fork

or:

1...Ke3
2.Qf3+ Kd4 (2...Kd2 3.Ne4+) 3.Ne2+ fork

2. Qh5+ Ke6

or:
2... Kf6 3. Qh8+ skewer
2... Kd6 3. Ne4+ fork
2... Kf4 3. Ne2+ fork
2... Kd4 3. Ne2+ fork

3. Qe8+ Kd5

or:

3... Kd6 4. Ne4+ fork
3... Kf6 4. Qh8+ skewer

4. Qg8+ Kc6

or:

4... Ke5 5. Qh8+ skewer
4... Kc5 5. Ne4+ fork
4... Kd4 5. Ne2+ fork
4... Kd6 5. Ne4+ fork

5. Qc8+ skewer and wins

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

To watch President Trump pardon two turkeys - named Bread and Butter - Melania Trump wore a sepia brown suede trench coat by Burberry and a pair of matching Saint Laurent knee-high boots. The coat retails for about $3,500.

73 It's un-PC to ask: but how many female "chess geniuses" are there? I know there have been excellent women players, even those who achieved GM status. The Polgar sisters for instance. But what are the rankings compared to men?

I think it's a bit like the difference between male and female tennis players. It shouldn't be that way because chess doesn't depend on physical strength, but it seems to be once of those inconvenient facts of life - men are better chess players. That doesn't mean women shouldn't play or compete because the best female players are far better than most men. They're just not as good as the best male players.

I got a bit annoyed when I was listening to my niece talk about how "The Queen's Gambit" showed how much discrimination women chess players face because I immediately thought "oh, right, another tale of victims vs. Bad White Men." I said, "Most women players don't reach the top level of chess, dear." I was a bit short with her. It was right after Election Day and I wasn't in a good mood.

un-PC to ask: but how many female "chess geniuses" are there? I know
there have been excellent women players, even those who achieved GM
status. The Polgar sisters for instance. But what are the rankings
compared to men?
Posted by: DonnaV at November 21, 2020 05:54 PM (HabA/)
There aren't any women that can compete with the top level men. Part of it is that if you look at any IQ bell curve for men and women, women have a higher peak. Basically, women aren't as stupid as the dumbest guys and they aren't as smart as the smartest guys. Next, most girls/women simply don't like games like chess. So, the pool of participants is smaller.

Now for a quick story. I once was having, for that time, my best tournament ever. Went into the last round with a chance of winning my section. Ended up facing some tween girl who historically had never been that good. After about three moves, I was completely befuddled. I was in a confused position with my new opening. Needless to say, I got crushed. Turns out the tween had been getting lessons from a female IM and I played the opening she had been studying. The guy who I beat to get a shot at the win found it very amusing.

We see the word all the time in "inalienable rights." Without leaping for the Unabridged, I'd guess it to be related to the old term "alienation of affection," which got used in divorce proceedings. If something is alienated, it is destroyed or made unusable; so "inalienable" would mean something which cannot be destroyed or removed.

Every bishop should have from the get-go told the governors and mayors to stick their emergency decrees where the sun don't shine.

I am horrified that they have rolled over as well. No good answer or reason, except that so many of our priests are foreign born. Around here a full half of our priests are Philipino. They are faithful, of course, but not "American".

And our church (and all churches) have had such a long history of getting along with our gov, that they don't want to see that the rug has been pulled out from other them. They think that the situation is reparable. They don't see that they are on the verge of the Reign of Terror.

One of the things I find most irritating about new British production of stories set in the 50s or earlier that are supposed to be realistic is the insertion of black people who just fraternize with everyone like it's no big deal. These are people who would not even accept the French. I'm supposed to believe that black people were just parading around in polite society.

It just kills the suspension of disbelief.

Liberals tend to be focused on outcomes, and conservatives on limits, and apparently there is a split between them reflected by specific traits with Liberals high in openess traits, and Conservatives in Conscientiousness.

I think what is the problem is that Liberals are being pushed to ONLY considering outcomes, and this is a trick used underhandedly to push the outcome and ingnore the external and subsidary costs. It is also being sold as a story with the plot of "these people have stolen your future"

Not sure what all that has to do with anything but there it is.

ON THE THIRD HAND: Libertarians tend to focus on the individual, and there is a proposal that they are not positioned between the poles of left and right, but hold their own position making the spectrum (hur hur libertarians are on the spectrum) actually a three pole relationship. To support this, as far as it can be, libertarians actually do seem to have specific traits that focus less on groups of people, en mass, and more on individual relationships.

293 Was at the market yesterday and saw a young couple with a baby. The mother was carrying the infant in one of those knapsack swaddling thingies (I can't remember what they're called and I used to have one). The baby was so tiny, couldn't have been more than a week old, eyes looking all around, mop of blond hair, all personality. It really struck me hard when I thought about the murder of infants, just like this one, that Bogus Biden, and the Left yell and scream for, and demand.

COVID is weird insofar that people have very different symptoms, which are almost exactly the same as the flu.

308 One of the things I find most irritating about new British production of stories set in the 50s or earlier that are supposed to be realistic is the insertion of black people who just fraternize with everyone like it's no big deal. These are people who would not even accept the French. I'm supposed to believe that black people were just parading around in polite society.

It just kills the suspension of disbelief.

Brit TV has pushed "diversity" to absurd extremes. Like historical dramas where somebody like Walter Raleigh is played by a black African actor, a lady in waiting in the court of Elizabeth I is Chinese, and the city of London is filled with Muslims and Asians.

I did see a new production of A Christmas Carol where Bob Cratchett's wife was black African. Because apparently, mixed-race marriage was a quite popular in Victorian England.

But the alternatives aren't wonderful either: (1) stage virtually all white productions for which minority actors need not apply; (2) don't stage any historical productions where this would be an issue; (3) include minorities in these productions but only when historically accurate, which likely would show a lot of ugliness best not revisited. It's a new problem caused by our weirdly multicultural societies. I don't think this is entirely a woke SJW crusade, though that's how we hear about it because the nuts are the loudest.

I get your point, but historical productions are not the only kind of production. I don't mind stuff like that Robin Hood movie with Jamie Foxx in one of the main roles - it's not meant to be historically accurate.

There can also be historical productions set in non-European areas. There's African, Asian, etc. history. In the 80s, I think, in Nigeria there was a dramatizing Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. It was amazing.

I feel just tossing minority actors in productions the way they do is lazy and even disrespectful.

On the rare occasion that a pawn becomes a Queen, you usually use whatever is available if both queens are still in the game since most chess sets don't come with extra pieces.

Use to be that most commercially available chess sets only came with one queen. So if you queened a pawn with your original queen still on the board, you had to come up with something else. An upside-down rook is the usual choice, because most of the time, one of your rooks would've been captured.

These days, chess sets with an additional queen are easy to come by, so this is no longer a big problem.

This! The same people who complain about cultural appropriation hail Hamilton. It really is unbelievable. (Oh, and they probably also hate the founding fathers.)

This is one of the reasons I didn't fall for the hype of Hamilton. I love theater, but I thought it was silly in this over-woke environment to push Hamilton. (Of course, it is understandable when one recognizes that a huge part of wokeness is WhitePeopleBad, when convenient, of course.)

In a non-crazy environment, I would regard it as an interesting and creative take, but not in this one.

368 I get your point, but historical productions are not the only kind of production.

Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) at November 21, 2020 06:59 PM (sd8p

Use to be that most commercially available chess sets only came with one queen. So if you queened a pawn with your original queen still on the board, you had to come up with something else. An upside-down rook is the usual choice, because most of the time, one of your rooks would've been captured.

These days, chess sets with an additional queen are easy to come by, so this is no longer a big problem.

Technically, they were in federal court - district court level. Next is the Circuit Court of Appeals (still federal). Really, the only purpose of the Court of Appeals is to refine and sharpen legal arguments. Whatever the evidence is is already in the case at the district court level. Once all the federal appeals in all the cases are done, they'll likely be consolidated via cert petitions to SCOTUS (at least the ones that matter) though I suppose they could stay others pending whatever they do.

579 "With prejudice" means "on the merits" = totes appealable. "Without prejudice" means "you can amend/refile (as appropriate), which means you can appeal but need to explain why further amendment/refiling is futile.

589 So a PA Judge dismisses a Trump suit with prejudice - yeah, that won't work. Nice try.

There was a time, maybe half a decade or more ago, when you attained the bench and worried about being humiliated when your rulings got laughed out of a higher appellate or at the SCOTUS for God's sake - now its a right of passage to be shown up as an imbecile on the national stage. Its like an American Clown School for judges. I'd be embarrassed for them - but they seem incapable of shame.

Looked that up briefly. It's weird, I have had dreams where I am angrily YELLING at someone and feeling very strongly indignant of something, but I have almost no temper and am not a yeller.

If I start out traveling somewhere I have been looking forward to, I never reach my destination. In fact, I rarely even leave my initial location.

My dreams are full of sabotage - never making exams, performances, etc.

Which is weird, because that's the opposite of my life and feelings. I wonder if that's why I'm not a worrier - it's all shoved down into my subconscious.

613 So, busy afternoon post-MoMe mean this goes up rather late.

Thanks to all the morons and 'ettes who showed up on short notice for the slapdash affair that was today's Ohio MoMe. The weather was lousy, but the company was first-rate. 614 Boswell, I believe the sum total "highlights" of Sotomayor's "career" on the district/appeals bench (forget where she was) consisted of a single case for which she was nuked by SCOTUS in terms as harsh as one might ever see. A friend was at Princeton when she was there, says she was a clear affirmative action case, they created a program for her, more or less. This would be back when Ivy admissions were still somewhat difficult or mostly based on actual merit, etc.

Watching Bannon with guests at Warroom.org, Boris Epsthyn, atty for Trump legal team, and Phill Kline of the St. Thomas Moore Society Amistad project, and former AG of Kansas, both said this was expected, and they expect to get relief in the 11th Circuit Court.

Phill Kline is introducing lawsuits in all 6 states today and Monday, separate from Trump lawsuits, showing that Zuckerburg funded illegal voting schemes with $400 million. Perkins Coie atty firm was also involved.

These schemes illegally changed voting from small counting rooms to giant counting rooms the size of 2 football fields, and Repub watchers were forced to one small area. Election officials were paid. For mail in ballots, they agreed to all kinds of security, which was ignored. A two-tiered election system was created, in violation of Equal Protection clause of the Constitution.
