Study: Masks' Protection Against Catching Covid is "Statistically Insignificant"

Gee that's weird, Professor AllahPundit and Dr. Guy P. Benson, Ph.D., M.D., assured me that All Virtuous People Wear Masks Because Science.

I wonder how the professors of Twitter Science are taking this news.

I checked Hot Air. Professor AllahPundit loves grabbing up the grabbiest, easiest stories he finds on Twitter and claiming them. (And making his coworkers search harder for stories. I wonder how they feel about that.)

But strangely, he leaves this grabby, easy story alone. It falls to Jazz Shaw to write it up.

Gee, I wonder why Professor AllahPundit skips some kinds of stories, like that there was no Russian colluision.

octors in Denmark have just released the results of what’s being described as a first of its kind study on the effectiveness of wearing face masks. Their conclusions are going to cause a lot of people in the pro-mandate camp plenty of consternation. They determined that while a cloth mask can definitely reduce transmissions from infected people to others, any protection provided by them to the uninfected is "statistically insignificant."

No one tell Professor AllahPundit and Dr. Guy P. Benson, Ph.D., M.D., that there are zero controlled studies demonstrating that lockdowns reduced covid transmission significantly, either!

And in a recent piece I read, they have no idea, yet, how it spreads. 10% maybe airports, 5% elderly homes, 5% medical community... 80%? uknown

You don't even need much if any statistics because there's no correlation in the first place as you include or localities. You can do fun stuff like controlling for population, density and temperature but you don't even really need to go that far. There's no there there.

Now do lockdowns (spoiler alert: it's the same).

The prevailing theory is that it prevents water droplets from you getting on other people on the theory that you spew mist constantly that travels like 80 feet in a cloud, or something.

There is a reason that medical people wear masks, but I think its less about microscopic droplets and more about flying bits of gore, blood etc and a proximity of your mouth.

It really was a 1984-esque landslide.

It would be one thing if Biden was performing strongly, and Trump was performing strongly (or even underperforming slightly), to the point where they were neck and neck and the Dems just fudged it a bit to get their man over the top.

That's happened before, let's all be honest. It happened in 2012 probably, and probably for W. in 2004.

But that's not what happened here.

Biden was the worst-performing Democrat since at least Dukakis in 88, and probably Mondale in 84. He was a loser in every sense of the word. And he was going up against a landslide.

That's what was stolen, here. This wasn't just a fudging of the numbers; this was the biggest usurpation of democracy itself in American history.

@ConservativeRants

Just a reminder to #America.

No government power, be it executive, judicial, or legislative, has the authority to force you to wear a piece of clothing, even under the guise of "protection."

Every year cities and states under hurricane threats impose "mandatory evacuations." Every year there are people who say "no." They are mocked and sometimes vilified, but at the end of the day, they are free to say no to that which is not constitutional.

#LOCKDOWNS are not constitutional

A #MASKMANDATE is not constitutional. These are suggestions, having only the power that we ascribe to them. Too many people are willing to walk around with diapers over their faces, and return home before curfew, and thus the officials who made those orders are emboldened to make them again, and step even more beyond the limits of liberty the next time.

At some point we have to be the crazy guy on his roof in Florida, standing against the winds, flipping off the rescue helicopter.

Eventually the helicopter will just fly away.

Pennsylvania just introduced new rules requiring a negative COVID test within the last 72 hours if you enter the state or you must quarantine for 14 days. A week before Thanksgiving.

87 Masks Protection Against Catching Covid is "Statistically Insignificant"

It says it right on the box. "This is an ear loop mask and NOT a respirator. This will not protect the wearer from catching Covid-19"

What fucking more do people need? The manufacturer TELLS you it doesn't work.

Posted by: rickb223 at November 18, 2020 01:49 PM (0mP7b)

88 but the point of the mask is that we're all infected, but don't know it
yet due to the incubation time. therefore, we all need to wear masks to
protect each other from ourselves.

This is likely a false conclusion, too. It makes sense on paper and laboratory/clinical studies show some efficacy here (there is plenty of disagreement in the scientific clinical studies, too, though mostly around degree of effect), laboratory and clinical studies have no relevance in the uncontrolled environments of the real world. For masks to work at *all* - even in the one direction that they seem to help in the first place - you need good habits. Good habits do not exist at scale.

How precisely do they plan on enforcing that? We don't go through passport control on interstate travel (yet). This is preposterous and they're counting on voluntary compliance. While I think that they will sadly *get* that compliance, I hope they don't.
------------------
From the article:
As far as enforcement goes, Levine said the expectation is people will comply.

"We're not looking to take people to court, but I do have that authority and so we cannot check every car driving into Pennsylvania and we have no plans to check everyone coming off every airplane," Levine said.

If you stock up on food for your pets, I recommend Gamma2 Vittles Vaults. They are food grade containers for pet food, with gamma seal lids to make them air tight. They really do keep the food smelling fresher a lot longer. I have a large one for the dogs and a smaller one for cat food.

And you don't have to get crazy about it. Buy a bit extra like you would if a bad storm is coming in. Make sure you have lighting in case the power goes out, that kind of thing.

I've been working construction projects in NY, NJ, CT and PA since the beginning of this bullshit.

Next to literal garbage dumps and women's lavatories, a construction site is perhaps the most unhygienic/unsanitary place on earth.

Also the concept of social distancing is non-operative.

You ever seen tin knockers, pipe fitters, electricians, etc. working in the same room trying to meet a deadline?

When you're young you fool around with science. It shows up at your door, usually uninvited, sometimes late at night. You let it in. You rub it all over yourself, and even though you feel tired and sore in the morning, you tell yourself it's true love.

Then science starts seeing other people, and the visits come more and more sporadically. You wonder what you did wrong. You get out your chemistry set, and try to figure it out.

What does it mean?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN??

And then one day, you realize what a whore science is, and you don't even think about opening that door when it comes knocking late at night. Your wife and kids wouldn't understand, so you say "No honey, that's just the wind. Go back to sleep."

Dentist: 'Mask Mouth' Is Causing Tooth Decay, Bad Breath, Clenching and Grinding of Teeth

The coronavirus pandemic has produced a new adverse health impact that dentists have dubbed "Mask Mouth."

"Mask Mouth," the result of wearing a coronavirus mask, produces an unpleasant odor and promotes tooth decay, Raleigh, N.C. Dentist Justin Russo explained in an interview with local station ABC11...

...the following precautions to take to avoid Mask Mouth:

Brush your teeth at least twice a day.
Floss between your teeth every day.
Don't forget to brush your tongue too.
Swish your mouth with mouthwash before putting on a mask.
Drink lots of waters throughout the day. Stay hydrated.
Avoid alcohol, smoking, marijuana, and vaping because they can cause dry mouth, inflammation, enamel damage, teeth staining, and even oral cancer.
Avoid sugary foods and acidic drinks.
Chew sugar-free gum to increase saliva flow.
Regularly wash your reusable face mask or replace disposable masks.
Eat a balanced and nutritious diet.

I need a crochet mask. Maybe I can make one out of an old doily.

I had to wear a mask last night when the hospital let me in to see my mother before she went into OR. I foolishly grabbed a fabric one I'd gotten a while back out of the console (in a hurry) instead of grabbing a disposable blue out of the trunk. The fabric is like a double ply rayon or something.

I seriously thought I was going to keep over after an hour. I was in a completely empty wing in an empty waiting area, and stuck my finger between my mask and face so I could get some damn air. I don't see how people wear these things for a shift. I am certainly sticking with the crappy disposables, because at least they've got far too many gaps to keep the air out. And viruses. And sawdust and anything else.

What a fucking crock. Can we just eliminate NIOSH now? Might as well get rid of one bureaucracy if we're going to ignore them.

- Wash your hands and face before donning your mask
- Put on your mask in a clean environment
- Don't touch your mask once it is on
- Replace your mask when it becomes damp
- Remove your mask with clean hands
- Dispose of your mask properly
- Wash your hands and face immediately after removing your mask
- Don't have facial hair

https://tinyurl.com/y2q94ep8

Direct contact with COVID-19 patients increased the likelihood of seropositivity among employees but study participants who wore a mask during COVID-19 exposures were less likely to be seropositive. Additionally, a large proportion of seropositive employees self-reported as asymptomatic. (Funded by Beaumont Health and by major donors through the Beaumont Health Foundation)

Now that you mention it, my mom does have a crochet face mask! A friend of hers knitted it for her years ago as a kind of face warmer ( I guess she didn't have enough yarn to make a scarf?). I gotta find that and start wearing it just to show how absurd this all is.

Then they're going to whinge and sob when suddenly, their own votes don't make a shit bit of difference. If they're even allowed to vote.

It either stops here, and we completely change the system, or we go full commie. I just never thought I'd live to see it. This isn't a turn of the ratchet. This is a fucking jackhammer.

For anyone under retirement age, over 99% of people survive, over 99.9% if you are under 40. Over 90% of Covid deaths have co-morbidities.

Also, 480,000 people died last year of smoking. Yet, no talk about making smoking illegal. That's more than double the Covid total, even mixed with co-morbidites.

But yeah, having the Democrats do the work of Communist China to shut down our country is just fine.

Right. This kind of gas lighting needs to stop. The clips are out there. You have everyone saying "don't buy masks, they're useless. Only doctors need them." followed by "you need to wear masks, not for yourself, but to keep others safe if you're an asymptomatic carrier." followed by "we lied about masks not working. They work great, they'll slow the transmission of this virus so that the r is below 1! If everyone wears a mask, this will be over soon"

etc. etc. etc.

NEJM has a superbly done study of Marine recruits that did or did not mask/isolate/etc.

Allowing for the limits of PCR testing, those that DID all the things had a slightly HIGHER incidence of COVID infection. Routine scheduled testing to find asymptomatic carriers and having them isolate for 10+ days was the ONLY thing that showed any efficacy at control at all - masks, distancing, surprise anal etc. NO use.

And of course we don't know how many of those asymptomatic persons are CONTAGIOUS or just had meaningless fragments detected by the test - we don't have a test for Contagion state!

326 @269 Greange

You can't use hospital workers as a correlation to the public. Hospital workers may or may not be hit or miss on their controls, but they're going to be significantly better than the people who are buying a mask and wearing it day after day because they have to if they want to buy groceries or go to work. Within 30 minutes of wearing a cloth mask, it's going to be saturated and wet, which means you're going to be pushing out viruses all day long through your mask. No one is going to be changing their mask out all day because it's expensive and tedious. They either work to protect the individual wearing them or they are useless. That's the only factor that matters.

But the fire department doesn't go to Ace to post fire hazards. The police don't go to Ace to ask the public's help with a fugitive. Politicians don't use Ace to talk about policy. Reporters don't use Ace to report on things. These things alone are what make places like Twatter a platform, not a publisher. But, they've taken the roll of a publisher by banning those they disagree with.

We need all government entities to move to a government run platform. They never should have been on twatter. But, in the beginning, that's what twatter was. Until they realized their power. Sadly, "we" gave it to them. And those protections WILL be removed under a Trump. Under a Biden, they'll only increase, and any alternatives will be shuttered.

I'd really rather you not pick up everyones used napkins, put them all on a plate, then run back to the kitchen and grab my plate, napkin, etc. with your same grubby dirty hands then put that in front of me. Then walk to the next table, grab their check, put their cash in a register and bring change back.

That said, I feel like people are even more careless abotu what they touch and how often they wash their hands when they're wearing gloves. So if anything, yeah, I'd prefer you not wear gloves, be careful what you touch, and wash your hands often.

373 If someone wants to wear a mask because they're sick and don't want to spread germs, I have no problem with that. They've been doing that in Asian countries for years.

But the hysteria around wearing masks and the forcing of people to wear them and shaming those who don't has nothing to do with not spreading germs. It's more about the government saying "if you don't wear a mask you will get sick." It's nanny-statism, and it's revolting.

If you're sick, stay home and recover.
If you're sick and you must go out, sure wear a mask. It won't 100% prevent you from spreading your illness, but it does mitigate it.

That's not an unreasonable position to take. It's also a voluntary position to take: The individual has liberty to wear his mask or not. The individual has liberty to be courteous or not.

But stop telling healthy people they must comply.

That is not protection.
That is tyranny.

389 A bizarre case in Australia has stunned medical researchers, after children of Covid-19-positive parents developed extremely effective antibodies without ever testing positive for the virus themselves.

In a study published last week in the medical journal Nature Communications, researchers discuss a family of five in which both parents contracted Covid-19 after attending a wedding without their children in March.

Approximately one week after returning, the mother and father developed symptoms such as a cough, congested nose, fever and headache.

The entire family was then tested for the virus, but only the parents tested positive, despite ongoing close proximity to their children, all of whom tested negative.

Because Covid is scared shitless of homeless encampments.
Posted by: rickb223 at November 18, 2020 02:11 PM (0mP7b)

We all know the real answer to this.

Because virtually no one has died from covid.

People have died WITH covid, but very few otherwise healthy people have become seriously ill or died from covid.

In the beginning of this, hospitals were actively killing people by sedating them and putting them on ventilators, which is a pretty risky thing to do to anyone, much less someone in their 70's or 80's that's already not in the best of health. Many of those people got bacterial pneumonia from the ventilators and died. And everyone KNEW that this was happening, but they were too scared of "aerosolizing" covid by putting people on CPAP machines, which could potentially infect hospital staff.

Now that hospitals aren't doing that anymore, the death rate is dropping like crazy.

430 The mask virtue signal has just captured the public, even hard line conservatives I know get really upset at any pushback on this, and it seems to get very personal if you have a different opinion. Like you want people to die.

For some - its a talisman against a danger they can't see and don't understand. For others - a proud symbol of conformity with which they can show their willing obedience for all to see. For yet more - the perfect pretext to scold, since hats indoors doesn't give them the mileage that it used to. For the political class - nothing more than an expression of authority.

The Victory Garden mention upthread is perfect. American Society has always been filled to the brim with fucking scolds. More Karens and other busy-bodies than you could count. During the Big One - many towns made service in those useless gardens mandatory with absence punishable by fine.

I'm really not being facetious here.

I'm not even 100% against masks, early on I was sort of in Ace's camp that if this is the "wubbie" that let's people get back outside and comfortable, fine. My guess is it does help on a really marginal level only in that contagious phase where someone should be home, the effects though for the general pop are greatly overstated.

We didn't want to wear them, but we couldn't just stop. We had to convince them that it was better that we stopped.

So we started wearing ugly ties. Ridiculously ugly ties. Then they told us the ties all had to be blue or black. So we made the knots ridiculously fat and left only a skinny stub sticking out. It took two years, but by the time of my senior class. No more ties.

___

Heh. I went to a private school and we have a uniform, that included a tie. A specific tie. This one smart ass decided one day he would wear his tie around his head since nowhere in the rules did it specifically say the tie must be worn around the neck.

But it was always kind of a silly thing.

The US had no problem producing enough food (then or now) to feed the entire population, plus our military, plus exporting food to countries all over the world.

So Ms. Karen down the street growing 4 or 5 tomato plants really doesn't make much of a difference in the grand scheme of things.

That said, as someone who enjoys doing a bit of gardening, I don't really have a problem with it. It was just the over the top "DO YOUR PART IN THE WAR EFFORT BY GROWING FOOD" propaganda posters that made people roll their eyes.

It was like the whole sky for a brief time was "twinkling" with micro-shooting stars. Not a lot of people saw it, but enough did for it to make the local news. Speculation is that the earth passed through a "wall of space dust" in under a minute. I didn't personally see it, but know someone who did, and said it was one of the eeriest and most amazing things she'd ever seen.

Oh. Seems entirely unrelated to a scientific study about the efficacy of masks, but okay.

Question -- is this latest science science I'm supposed to believe, or science I'm supposed to pretend doesn't exist?

It's hard to keep track. I'm really just trying to follow the science, but it's hard to know which science sometimes.

My mom plays bridge at a big club a couple of times a week. They wear masks, use hand sanitizer, and nobody has gotten sick. They do the temp scan at the door walking in, and since it's mostly old people they just trust players to not come in sick. Basic hygiene works to slow the spread of disease. I'd guess the folks who are driving these spikes live piled up on each other and can't, or won't follow easy precautions.

541 Shenanigans, almost no masks being used provide source control. Only actual properly fitted and used N95-level masks provide some protection to the user. So no, the commonly heard thing about "protecting others" is precisely and spectacularly erroneous.

In fact, for symptomatic cases, good chance masks *exacerbate* the situation (potentially - again, all of this is non-material angels-on-pinheads silliness) by aerosolizing/nebulizing droplets, meaning any pathogen in both sediments more slowly (stays suspended in air longer) and is more likely to be breathed more deeply into the lungs, also a bad thing.

Yes, I agree, but not about masks. This is why Biden is going to his "4-6 week national lockdown" if he pulls off his theft. They'll do an illegal national lockdown, learn how to restrict travel and impose interstate martial law, declare victory, reopen over the subsequent 6-8 weeks, declare victory again, and then Biden rides the coattails of Trump's economic gains into 2022, whereupon they consolidate power and finish corrupting elections where they didn't get around to it last time.

No? Drat. I still plan to build my own global economy with a non-woke Internetwork and one-day Omozan shipping etc.

What I came here to say is to point out what a joke the mask science has been all along. We now have public and private institutions not only requiring masks but specifying types of masks that will not be permitted, ie, gaiters. Why? Well because they are "shown to be less effective." Have they, though?

Well, friend, let's look back to where this came from. As far as I can tell, the only basis for the conclusion that gaiters are less effective is from a low-end meme article in Science Advances call "Low-cost measurement of face mask efficacy for filtering expelled droplets during speech." If you look at Fig. 2, you see they tested one gaiter. They do not identify who wore it or how they wore it, whether it stretched, how much it stretched. They do not identify the material the gaiter was made of, or whether they tested other materials. They do not identify the construction of the gaiter, such as whether it's a summerweight vented gaiter intended to prevent sunburn or a winterweight warming gaiter intended to prevent heat loss.

Simply, it's a grossly unscientific study that could've been put together by your kid for their grade school science fair. It's trash. But because it's from DUKE UNIVERSITY students, it was somehow ingested by our media propagandists as credible and has now been used as the basis for declaring tubular structures disposed around a wearer's head as totally ineffective for purposes of inhibiting the travel of aerosolized pathogens.

A later Duke Chronicle article admitted the flaws in this article and underlying study. It was rushed, it had a uselessly small sample size, the sensitivity of measurements was coarse, and so forth. But we still have high-level decisionmakers informing the requirements they're imposing on the general public based on the trash meme.

This microcosm seems representative of the larger body of #ScIeNCe around masks. But as we've discussed earlier this week, this is a matter of faith to the faithful, not a sober, rational study on the world as experienced in common by all humans regardless of their religion. Tony Fauci is the new Joel Osteen and the mask is his Christmas tree, the conspicuous and commercialized object having little to do with the underlying scripture.

610 Don't get the hee-hawing about this. The study is in line with other literature on mask wearing that was available as the pandemic started (ie, effectiveness of surgical masks on the spread of viral respiratory infections).

Masks are effective in arresting the spread of a virus throughout a population when the vast majority of folks use them. They aren't some kind of silver bullet on the individual level when mask use is haphazard across the population (what this study looked at).

Kind of like, you should cough into your elbow and wash your hands regularly. Doing those two things does not guarantee that you'll never get (or spread) a viral infection, but if 95% of people do those two things, you end up with *a lot* less people infected across a population.

Not rocket science, am puzzled where the confusion is coming from.

612 Thomas,

No pneumonia. She didn't even have a fever during the entire thing. But she was very weak, had no appetite and low oxygen. After a week of treatment at the NH, she was transferred to the hospital. She was there for about 4 days, receiving more and more oxygen (she wouldn't keep the mask on) and the next step was a ventilator. She had a long-standing DNR which emphasized NO VENTILATOR NO MATTER WHAT. So the only option was hospice, which, by this time was up to my brother and I (advanced Alzheimer's) and we respected her wishes. So they took her off oxygen, put her on morphine and 2 days later, she peacefully slipped away. Covid is a much kinder death than alzhemer's.

613 As someone who has had 25 years experience in liquid particle science as well as 10 years airborne particle science as well as a owning a company that builds equipment for disinfecting, sanitizing, and sterilizing rooms and equipment. I can tell you that masks are not efficient at anything other than filling the pocket book of the mask maker.
The PM2.5 is a 2.5 micron size whereas the Xi-Ping virus is 25 time smaller than the pore size of the mask.
N95 are 5 times larger in pore size; however, need to be frequently changed due to the porosity of the mask with respect to the wicking of the water vapor exhaled during each breath; you are literally clogging the mask with your breath.
If you can smell a fart with a mask on (which you should try), it does not work.
If anything, wash both your hands AND face when taking off your face-diaper petri dish of "DO WHAT WE FUCKING TELL YOU TO DO, PLEBE!!!"

625 "there are zero controlled studies demonstrating that lockdowns reduced covid transmission significantly, either!"

This is a blatant lie.

Go back to last March. The worldometers.info charts will do for a data source. Set up a spreadsheet, entering the number of reported cases in the USA in one column, call it column A. In column B, set up the formula A2 minus A1 and copy/paste that on down the column for a while, so each cell measures the difference between the next two A cells. That's your new cases per day. In column C, set up the formula B2/A1 and paste that on down; that's your percentage increase per day. In column D, set up the formula log(2)/log(1+c2) and copy/paste that on down; that's your doubling time.l

You will see - it is blatantly obvious, it's in black and white numbers right there in your spreadsheet - that the percentage growth rate in the early stages of the epidemic was around 30% per day and stayed there, giving a doubling time of total cases of 2-3 days, and stayed there.

Until a week AFTER the lockdowns started getting implemented. That is to say, precisely the lag time one would expect in terms of seeing a change in symptoms after the incubation period.

Then all of a sudden the percentage growth rate and doubling time start dropping like rocks, settling in at 2% and 25 or so days, and eventually converging toward a six-week doubling time through the summer.

The lockdowns did that. It is right there in the data. It happened exactly at the time lag point it should have happened given the lag from symptomless incubation.

Everyone saying the lockdowns did nothing is lying like a Democrat.
