The Mayflower Compact, 1620 [KT]

MayfloweCompact.jpg

Signing the Mayflower Compact 1620
a painting by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris, 1899

Well, last year, the New York Times released its celebrated and castigated "1619 Project", in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the accidental landing of a slave ship in what would later become Virginia.

This year, it is the 400th anniversary of 1620, and a different ship landing (with related events) is being commemorated. Not in a project published in the New York Times:

  • The Federalist has introduced The 1620 Project, with collection of essays written this month, based on the Pilgrims and the Mayflower Compact. And a T shirt.

  • The National Association of Scholars has introduced The 1620 Project, which is a refutation of the '1619 Project' as well as a commemoration of the Pilgrims and the Mayflower Compact. The introductory page includes essays going back to September of last year, soon after the '1619 Project' was introduced.

  • Peter Wood of the NAS (see above) has published a book, 1620: A Critical Response to the 1619 Project

  • A "visual, conceptual and performance artist" has re-imagined the Mayflower Compact "if activist, American woman" had signed it. I laughed and laughed and laughed.

Below, a highlight or two from each of these four new publications:

From the Federalist's 1620 Project

Wilfred M. McClay: How The Mayflower Compact Changed History Forever 400 Years Ago

The Plymouth colonists in particular were not only Calvinists but also Separatists, which meant that they had separated themselves from the Church of England as a hopelessly corrupted body and preferred to worship in independent congregational (meaning self-governing) churches. This would turn out to be one of the most primal constitutional moments in history. It established the foundational principle of self-rule that would become the heartbeat of the American republic and its free institutions.

After 11 years of living in increasingly difficult exile in the city of Leiden in the Netherlands, they secured a land patent from the Virginia Company permitting them to establish an English colony where they could practice their faith freely. That was their dream. Across the ocean, they came aboard the Mayflower and made landfall at what is today Cape Cod -- outside of the Virginia Company's jurisdiction, and indeed, outside the jurisdiction of any known government.

There were clear and present dangers in these unexpected circumstances, and the group's leaders knew it. They were especially worried that the colony might not be able to hold together as a law-abiding entity, in the absence of any larger controlling authority. About half of those on board were "Strangers," the Pilgrims' term for non-Separating passengers, who did not share their religious motives for making the arduous trip, but whose skills and labor were going to be essential to the colony's success in a harsh and forbidding environment.

Some among the Strangers had already indicated that as the colony was being planted outside the reach of the royal charter, they might feel free to go their own way and "use their own liberty," as one of them said, "for none had power to command them." This was a frightening prospect. What were the Pilgrim leaders to do?

In response, they drafted and signed on Nov. 11, a short document they came to call the Plymouth Combination (the name "Mayflower Compact" would not be applied until the 1790s). In that document, they committed themselves to "covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick," and committed themselves to obey any and all laws and authorities that would be established thereby.

This would turn out to be one of the most primal constitutional moments in history, one that established the foundational principle of self-rule that would become the heartbeat of the American republic and its free institutions. . .

From the National Association of Scholars' 1620 Project

Video: White House Conference on American History from September 17:

Today, President Trump hosted the first ever White House Conference on American History, an event that brought together renowned American historians, scholars, and educators to discuss how our country is fighting the indoctrination of our children through unpatriotic American history curricula.

Conference speakers included Wilfred M. McClay, Mary Grabar, Allen C. Guelzo, and President Trump himself, as well as the National Association of Scholars' very own President Peter W. Wood.

One of the important things that President Trump has done.

Peter Wood also had a piece in the New York Post earlier the month that is included in the Project now.

In August 1619, a pirate ship, the White Lion, stopped at Jamestown and traded 20-some captive Africans for food. The Africans were treated as indentured servants and soon released.

Fifteen months later, in November 1620, an English ship blown off course on its way to Virginia ended up off the barren coast of Massachusetts. It landed more than 100 men, women and children. Those voyagers founded Plymouth Colony.

Which event mattered more?

Stanley Kurtz reviews Peter Wood's Book

I can think of no book more deserving of a review in The New York Times--or less likely to receive one--than Peter Wood's just-published 1620: A Critical Response to the 1619 Project. More than a powerful refutation, Wood's 1620 is a withering appraisal and deadpan skewering of the 1619 Project as a cultural phenomenon. That ill-starred journalistic project is the purest and most perfect example of woke. The cultural revolution of 2020 will always rightly be associated with the 1619 Project of The New York Times. Not for nothing did project creator Nikole Hannah-Jones cheerfully embrace the term "1619 riots."

The re-imagined, "activist woman" Mayflower Compact

I'm sorry, but this short description of the re-imagined Mayflower Compact seems totally irrational to me. Think Harriet Tubman and Yoko Ono would have worked well together?

"Curriculum guides for middle and high school students based on the Re-signing The Mayflower Compact 2020 project are available."

Perfect.

At this site, you can get a chart or poster depicting how many of the Pilgrims survived until the First Thanksgiving.

thanksgivingpost.jpg

Think Yoko Ono would have made it if she had been there?

Music

This hymn is from the time when the Pilgrims and their co-religionists were in the Netherlands.

Let thy congregation escape tribulation.

Thy Name be ever praised

O Lord, make us free.

Hope you have a good pre-Thanksgiving weekend. Any kids around who need to learn something real about 1620?

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor, and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness."

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks, for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation, for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war, for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed, for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions, to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually, to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed, to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord. To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and Us, and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

The year that is drawing towards its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, the order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuttle, or the ship; the ax had enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. The population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege, and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years, with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Highest God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the city of Washington, this third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the independence of the United States the eighty-eighth.

Proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln, October 3, 1863.

Of course it's why the Left want to suppress it now - using COVID as an excuse - then say in the future, "You got along fine without it last year." Thanksgiving is a solemn act of acknowledgement by the nation to Almighty God for the blessings He has bestowed on us, undeserving as we are. But to the Left and today's Democratic party, God doesn't exist and our nation is a fraud. So out Thanksgiving goes.

It is a traditional Scandi (Alsace) x-ma/NYr dish. Duck stuffed with fruit. When I make it (I've been making it since I was this tall) I do it in a traditional Danish way - apples and prunes. Although goose is also common. But geese are kind of complicated...In the xmas carol Scrooge brings the goose. So maybe not just Scandi/NW France.

As a former military pilot, as recently as the mid-90s, I can tell you that you are correct about *normal* flight operations. However, my comment addressed the guy's apparent belief that in a time of real military action involving flight over CONUS, for whatever reason, there is no way in hell those aircraft would be squawking normal Mode C so that they could be tracked by commercial software he uses. There are other modes of transponder transmissions that are secure transmissions for tactical reasons.

112 Kemp is trying to pull a fast one. The good news is he is hinting he will not sign a letter of assurance for the certification until a "risk limiting audit" is done. He is a snake so I am not putting much stock in that.

THEN he called for a sample check of signatures on ballots but he was really cagey in how he called for it. He called for signatures to be matched against "signatures on applications and signatures on file in the SoS office". This is illegal and comports with the consent decree signed by Raffesperger. BY LAW, signatures can only be matched against those on file with the SoS which are obtained when a GA citizen registers to vote.

Keep calling this snake and DEMAND that he not send a letter of assurance with a fraudulent vote certification. DEMAND a special session. Remind him that, contrary to state law, there is every appearance that localities have been destroying envelopes.

You also need to question how they are comparing signatures.

In Calif, with Motor Voter Law, the sig that goes to your vote card (if you register at the DMV), is the one you used on your drivers license.

Which you do on a touch screen. My Drivers license signature looks NOTHING like my normal signature (the one I put on my ballot).

Different letters used... Different number of times underlined... Heck, in my Drivers Lic I didn't even put my middle initial which I normally use.

Yet somehow, my vote went through.

Maximum Leader Kate Brown announced that people should call the cops if they observe their neighbors having people over for Thanksgiving, or engaging in any other violation of the lockdown rules.

Just about every police agency in the state, including Portland, told people not to call 911 for Thanksgiving crimes, and most of them said that they had no intention of enforcing Fuhrer Brown's diktats.

I guess the optics of arresting people for having Thanksgiving dinner were too much even for Portland.

My town had a town meeting system and descendants of the original Plymouth colonists had reserved front room seating. They didn't get any special perks other than that, just a hat tip to their heritage.

Incidentally, if you are interested in watching a video that goes into excruciating detail to demonstrate how the Dominion machines were used to rig Philadelphia this is quite a video. The kind of stats he is demonstrating in a relatively compressed time are just not possible in the real world.

There are affidavits out stating that Vote counting machines were ONLINE during the election, most using WiFi.

And were using Windows 10 HOME Edition with standard security settings.

ie, remote control turned ON.

And AUDIT turned off, so no logging of security events.

With that many machines, they HAD to have used a standard Admin Account name and password.

Thus, anyone with that account name and password, could remote into those machines DURING THE ELECTION, and change things, with no Log entry of the event.

Just about every police agency in the state, including Portland, told people not to call 911 for Thanksgiving crimes, and most of them said that they had no intention of enforcing Fuhrer Brown's diktats.

I guess the optics of arresting people for having Thanksgiving dinner were too much even for Portland.

Maximum Leader Kate Brown is in dire need of psychiatric help.

I had car trouble the other day, and a good Samaritan came over to help, although the problem was beyond either of our abilities to fix on the spot. We'd chatted for several minutes before he mentioned that he was a local cop, and I realized that neither of us had even mentioned face diapers, much less was wearing one.

Then the tow truck showed up, and HE wasn't wearing a face diaper either. I had mine in my pocket, should it be necessary, but he obviously wasn't having any of it either, any more than any of my baseball buddies (even the resident liberal) are having any of it.

I may have not explained myself well enough and you assumed I was bashing the guy for tracking military aircraft conducting normal operations over CONUS using Flight Aware or Radar 24. Nah. He seems to think that in a real military action, he'd be able to track the military planes via such software. Nope.
I flew aircraft that could, if necessary, transverse CONUS and not be tracked via Mode C. The transponders on the aircraft emitted a scrambled code that could only be unscrambled with the proper equipment on the receiving end and only by those who needed to know.

There is also something called MARSA, which stands for Military Assumes Responsibility For Separation of Aircraft. What that means is that in time of military necessity, I could have taken off from my home base, turned the transponder off completely, and flown to whatever I needed to be (including in IFR conditions, i.e. in the clouds) and no one -- not military air traffic controllers, not the FAA, no one -- would know where I was or what route I had taken to get there.

So, as I said, it's a nice little hobby for the guy, but he's delusional in thinking he'd be able to track military aircraft engaged in no shit for real military action above CONUS.

There's a scene in the movie, The Incredibles, where Mr. Incredible has discovered the nefarious plot of the bad guy, and as he's discovered and trying to escape, a bunch of goo spewing guns pop out of the walls, hitting him with a gelatinous bubble that grows. He's able to fight off the first few, but as they become more numerous, all of them swelling, he's eventually swallowed by the accumulated weight and mass of them all. He's rendered helpless to move.

Now imagine your average politician. He's no Mr. Incredible. Once he becomes the target for the blobs, how possible is it for him to move against the status quo?

251 OT: I haven't been around much because I'm busy. But Lurking Lurker said something yesterday that caught my attention:

"One of the great lies in society is that family matters above all else. Bullshit. Your happiness matters above all else. If your family is keeping your from achieving happiness, walk away."

I think this flatly wrong. No nuance, just wrong.

Happiness doesn't matter at all. It's a thing, but not an important one, and it's never driven a man or a society toward anything of importance.

Family, on the other hand, is super important. I'm a patriot and a Jew. But I've never felt compelled to violence over country or faith. I've pushed a shotgun into a man's face for my family. I've hung a man by his feet from a balcony for my family. I've wept and clapped and whooped it up for my family.

Family, at the end of it all, isn't the most important thing... It's the only thing.

YDice, like you, I disagree. I think seeking "happiness" as the main goal in life will end up with one being pretty miserable.

There are cases in which some family members are so toxic that you have to separate yourself from them for sheer survival. But overall, I am a proponent of loving one's family, despite the fact that we all have flaws. Loving someone does not mean being a slave to them or obsessed with them, but love is a good thing, and loving one's family is a virtue.

To be sure, I have a great family, and a broad definition of that - not limited to blood relatives only.

But it's all anyone has... Nobody else loves you, nobody else will go to the mat for you. When you're absolutely fucked, that's who you have, and vice versa.

No country or church will do it. No amount of wealth will either. You can pay people any sum, and they'll abandon you in a moment of need.

Happiness may keep you warm at night, but it won't hold your hand when you die.

Only family does that. If your family sucks, then find a new one.

288 The ideal is to love your family.

The ideal is not always possible. Like I said, family (and other people) can be so toxic you have to separate yourself from them. Also, some people make themselves slaves to family and others, hampering their own lives. This is not love.

Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at November 21, 2020 01:31 PM (lJuMe)

What if one doesn't WANT someone holding their hand?

Again, you may be defining "happiness" more narrowly than was meant when the term was used in the Declaration of Independence.

There are people who don't want to be surrounded by a bunch of other people. Family or otherwise.

That may sound like hell to you, but if that's what someone wants, is it not preferable to live in a society that allows them to pursue that?

The trick to using a fabric mask is getting the right mesh to nebulize exhaled breath, spittle, coughs, and sneezes to 1 - 100 microns in size. I could be more precise, but that is a fair 'order of magnitude' range for the worst.
That size range optimizes suspension time and probability of being trapped in the lungs of those who inhale it.

The first trick in getting an effective bioweapon if getting it stuck in people's lungs.

317 WI: The Trump campaign has been informed by observers, whether sitting or standing, that they are unable to see through plexiglass and observe the ballots and materials being reviewed by election workers and therefore, they believe there is an inadequate opportunity to observe the ballots. Therefore, they are requesting items 2-7. Also, they want to ensure that there is a Trump observer at each table while recount is occurring.

2 Requesting that all written applications for absentee ballots are present during the recount and are set aside for observation.
3 Requesting that all absentee ballot envelopes without a written application set aside for observation.
4 Requesting that all absentee ballot envelopes with different ink set aside for observation.
5 Requesting that all absentee ballot logs are available, that they include all absentee applications (i.e., online requests) and set aside for observation.
6 Requesting that all absentee envelopes and applications that identify indefinitely confined voters set aside for observation.
7 Requesting that all copies or other evidence of all photo identification for any absentee ballot identification set aside for observation.
8 Requesting that all data for all the tabulating machines and all images of the ballots be preserved today and available for observation. And, that any and all audit trails and/or error trails from tabulating machines from Nov 2-5, 2020 be made available for observation, as well as the names of any technicians that performed any of this work or updates during Nov 2-5, 2020.

The Board of Canvassers did agree to set some ballots aside from the objections:

Ultimately, the Board of Canvassers directed Milwaukee County poll workers to set aside absentee ballot envelopes that had different colored ink and envelopes marked as indefinitely confined for observation.

The optimum particle size for that is about 5 microns. Particles much larger than that tend to splat against the back of the oropharynx (can't make the turn downward to the lungs), whereas particles much smaller than that go down to the lungs, but don't settle, and end up getting exhaled again.

That's why ultrasound contrast agents for pulmonary use tend to be around 5 microns in particle size.

351 Watched the #151 video. Unsure whether it is really anything anomalous. Would need to have a comparison to "clean" data to be sure (too many random Internet theories are abounding, mostly unchecked).

Here's the scenario: data update at 8am, by chance has 2 or 3 precincts with the same ratio of Trump/total votes, say 1/48 (as 5/240, 4/192, 7/336, sorry about the math) - he also has 1/18, or 4/65, etc., as example fractions.

There are repeated data "updates" throughout the day, which don't change the above reported vote counts in those precincts.

Then there's another data update (with actual vote-count changes) at 5pm: the above precincts now have more votes counted, so they are no longer at 1/48. But there's 2 or 3 new random precincts (again by chance) which now *do* have exactly the 1/48 ratio. So the video hypothesis is that Dominion "transferred" the ratios from one precinct to another.

About 9 examples are given in the video. Author says hundreds more are there. Maybe that would be enough to convince me, but at this point I'm not sure it's anomalous, given the size of the data set.

It's possible that Republicans *in the know* used it to put their guy in. _Dominion was used in the primaries too.

354 112 Kemp is trying to pull a fast one. The good news is he is hinting he will not sign a letter of assurance for the certification until a "risk limiting audit" is done. He is a snake so I am not putting much stock in that.
...

Keep calling this snake and DEMAND that he not send a letter of assurance with a fraudulent vote certification. DEMAND a special session. Remind him that, contrary to state law, there is every appearance that localities have been destroying envelopes.

His number is 404-656-1776.

What is Sidney Powell's "Kraken?" Here's my theory.

Election fraud has been around for decades. It's well-known to insiders. It's denied by the media. It's hdden from the public.

The corrupt establishment that relies on election fraud didn't anticipate Donald Trump. Somehow, patriots neutralized election rigging in 2016 giving Trump a shot at winning. And win, he did.

Four years later, another rigged election came into view. Nationwide election fraud can't be done without the knowledge of tens of thousands of people. This time, many of the people who witnessed election fraud had become loyal to Trump.

When word went out that Trump's legal team was looking for witnesses to election fraud, thousands of people responded. That's why Sidney Powell says they're being flooded with more evidence everyday.

Those who doubt she has the evidence, don't understand how many people I have first-hand knowledge of election fraud. This time, because they believe in Trump the witnesses were willing to risk their lives, their jobs, and the safety of their families to expose fraud all in the hope of removing it once and for all.

I may be wrong, but I suspect that when Sidney Powell says she's going to "release the Kraken," she's referring to an avalanche of first-hand, eyewitness testimony from hundreds of patriots around the country--evidence that cannot be disputed by anyone.
