As much as I think the Obgerfell ruling is judicially suspect, it had the effect of taking the anti-gay issue directly off the table from the GOP, which was becoming a cultural loser. Unlike abortion, which I believe will be a long term cultural winner. Anthony Kennedy's lasting legacy may be that he revived the GOP.

I saw this when it cropped on the MR. This is worth watching. He is astonished, but positive about it. He ends with encouraging other people to go attend such an event and see it for themselves, while specifically not making an appeal as to how someone should vote.

from last thread, since Shibuni can't think of no good reasons about trump....
I can't think of a coherent argument for Trump, but maybe someone in the horde can? ----> at the end of the day, Trump put forward a very energetic issues based first term to handle issues to one solve issues that he believed were hurting America and two to further create policies that help America. 1. Pax Trumpicana. No new wars, fighting with CIA and DOD to end foreign entanglements WHILE actually micro-fighting the global war on terror, including ending ISIS and castrating Iran. 2. Pax Trumpicana part II. Extensive peacework efforts and results with Norks, Israel, Kosovo and so on. 3. Pax Trumpicana part III. New better trade deals with china deal and USMCA and exiting bad deals including Iran deal (which ultimately had goal of nuclear armed Iranian hegemony in Middle East. bad) and the Paris Accords which fucked USA in the ass. 4. Fixing the VA. trump very proud of this. 5. The Gilded Age of Trumpism. Trump's economic policies and deregulation push gave massive jobs and wealth. I want to point out that Biden bragging that the Trump recovery is really, akkshually, obama and his recovery is complete garbage. unless he's bragging it took 9 years to recover from the 2008 housing crisis. Math, motherfuckers...you brag about 2017 recovery for a 2008 downturn, you skipped your 8 years in office. Add to that, um, Trump accomplished the Gilded Age of Trump by ENDING OBAMA POLICIES. 6. Educational Reform. Devos pushing back against college censorship and the teacher unions destroying our kids' souls. big uphill battle, one GOP never even tried. 7. Immigration. Big enforcement, fought many court battles, the wall, ending H1B abuse, stuff the GOP never even tried to deliver. 8. the courts, it seems like he did ok there with 300 seats including 3 SCOTUS picks. 9. The Vid. I submit he did great despite hysterical democrat politicization of every step of the battle against The Vid. more later. 10. Criminal Justice reform, if letting folks out of jail is your thing. Posted by: official redcheckmark at October 30, 2020 12:06 PM (zzdt2) 23

Isn't it strange that all the anecdotal reports of people talking to the grunt level campaign officials have different results depending on party.
They have the Democrats saying 'Oh, things are fine' or 'We're seeing 2016 numbers again' at best, to 'I hope we win ' at worst. They have the GOP saying 'We're breaking records' or 'We're getting so many people who have never voted Republican coming in' at best, to 'We're seeing 2016 numbers again' at worst. Obviously these are anecdotal evidence, and there are places where the Democrats are doing great while the GOP suck i.e. the California and Virginia state GOPs. But many of the same people would say that 'Biden is going to sweep the nation,' which is certainly what most polls are saying. A few stories like these are anecdotes. But if you keeping adding thousands and tens of thousands of these stories to the pile...The evidence wouldn't be anecdotal any more. Posted by: E.S. at October 30, 2020 12:15 PM (4i7w0) 91

I think the gentleman captured it perfectly.
People are tired of division and conflict. They want to get along as Americans. I have been to several Trump rallies. It is good honest fun and a great time with people who value one main thing: America and our communities. We honestly though COVID would bring us together. We would tackle it like we did 9-11, together as a nation. But Democrat's don't want that. They don't want us fighting this together. They made it political and in the process encumbered our ability to address it effectively. They obfuscated facts and brought superfluous issues into the mix. They politicized it and in the process divided us further. Here we are in the road to recovery and their presidential candidates main issue is to continue that division and the assault on us. All of us. I just don't see how that resonates with people who just want to live their lives again, have a good time and get back to normal. In fact, I think many are realizing Democrats stole something from us in this crisis and they want it back. Posted by: Marcus T at October 30, 2020 12:16 PM (vkHDf) 102

My argument for Trump.
Think of the Bushes, and the endless wars and nation building projects. Think of Clinton and his dozens of police actions, putting our people in harm's way for no gain. Think of Obama and his drone strikes, and how he destabilized non-threatening Libya, and tried to pull us fully into Syria. Iran is following North Korea blackmail policy. I'm sure Biden will be all in... When they tell him he is Posted by: It's me donna at October 30, 2020 12:15 PM (Zmnko) Oh, far from it. Iran is announcing a negotiated surrender, a prelude to complete surrender. First the Soleimani elimination, and now the Abraham Accords, have destroyed them. They're finished. Ever since 1979, the Ayatollah's have been shrieking "DEATH TO ISRAEL! WE WILL RAIN DOWN MISSILES ON THEIR HEADS!!!" Never one possibility of ever acknowledging their existence. and now it's "ok, we acknowledge you're there to stay, will you concede on terms?" Nope, the obvious response is "Fuck you, you just surrendered, why do we grant you any terms?" Since basically requiring any Dem voter to do anything to vote is "voter suppression," why not just say even the effort of actually casting a ballot (i.e., filling in a circle, pushing out a chad, pushing a button) is also voter suppression? The only obvious solution then is to let the scientific polling decide the election so Dem voters aren't being suppressed.

On the "science" part of stats and polling, much of this ASSumes accurate data and not a self-selective bias.
If you want to see how many red cars a neighborhood has and you're a pollster, and the people that have red cars go out of their way to avoid you, lie to you, say they don't know, or answer wrong in order to purposely making polling look bad, you're not going to have accurate results. Plus, the pollster perhaps has an agenda to create a narrative that they aren't many red cars, and strategically models the "neighborhood" based on that. if you had the ability to "make" people answer honestly and not allow them to hang up on you, and model without a bias, there is something to the science of stats. But that's not happening at all. Posted by: Blago at October 30, 2020 12:32 PM (gkdnV) 278

Turnout. Turnout. Turnout.
It's nice to hear that Blacks may vote more for Trump. Many, especially Black men, will also sit this one out, which is in effect half a vote for Trump. Despite Historic First Kamala. I've called the Hispanic vote the wild card this cycle. It's equivalent in raw numbers to the Black vote, but has historically had lower turnout and thrown the Rs 35%, while Blacks only vote 10% R. Until now, this has made the Black vote more important to the Ds than the Hispanic. I expect that Hispanics are pissed at the Ds for BLM and all the other shit how the Ds ignores them. They'll stay home or vote Trump this cycle, enough to move the needle a couple of points. The polls don't see this. Karens look at Trump and see a gavone. Hispanics look at Trump and see a padrone. A fraction of Trump voters are not also Trump supporters. They do it to keep power out of the hands of the other guy, and that's OK, despite the lecturing of civics teachers and assorted schoolmarms since the dawn of the progressive/WWI era of partially democratic nation-states.
The reason you know it's OK is because *NO* Biden voters are Biden supporters except his relatives/flunkies. The relatively decent liberals who will vote for him are just doing it to keep power out of the other guy's hands. Therefore the rule can't just be another weapon against deplorable "legacy America." It has to apply to both sides. And not supporting and not voting for either is OK too. The offline society away from Twitter does not yet have the nature of aascist police state defined by party loyalty, or more than 1/2 the country still doesn't have that, despite the best efforts of media/Silicon Valley. The only thing stupider than assigning morality to someone purely on a single voting decision is the gambling-addict belief that the purpose of your past votes is to have backed the winner most times. I actually heard this notion from a female college lecturer the other day. I say female because the idea was offered in a cutesy "Oh that's just how put-upon I am" joking manner rather than the spirit of "Here's how low-key deluded/demented I am" Posted by: Son of Prognostimacator at October 30, 2020 12:45 PM (mX3Ey) 421

I'd only ever seen the Dead once, and while I was glad I had just to say I had, it wasn't an experience I cared to repeat. Posted by: navybrat, at home at October 30, 2020 12:43 PM (w7KSn) Propositions have gotten us into a LOT of messes. Prop. 99 - a constitutional amendment, no less - mandated that 39+% of the state budget HAD to go to K-12 "education." Thanks, teachers' unions! OTOH, in 1975 we did get Prop. 13, limiting property tax increases, to the immense frustration of the Reds, so there's that. All that lovely money being wasted on the people who earned it, when there are so many deserving layabouts who want it, and are willing to vote Democrat to get it. I had the pleasure of attending Trump's Rally in Janesville. It was genuinely uplifting. Everybody there was great: orderly and happy. We all enjoyed each other's company.
Another thing: the logistics of these rallies is remarkable. Imagine the organization involved in: 1. Staging 4-5 concerts simultaneously (because he is doing up to 3 a day and they have to be prepping the follow on venues for that day and the following days). 2. The locations for the concerts are not venues prepared for concerts - they are frickin airport blacktop. So they have to set up stands, get cranes to hold the flags, set up TV monitors, and completely prepare the AV for each stop. 3. Each one of these has to be ready to deal with 10,000-30,000 people. 4. Each location has to be scouted and prepped by the secret service. They make walls to protect the president from snipers by using freight trucks to wall off the area. They fly a helicopter over the site for about an hour before the president arrives and when leaving looking for security problems. They have what appears to be all sorts of telecommunicaton/jamming equipment set up. 5. Each location has to have the security screening and even security (who look like former special forces) mixed in with the crowds for every event. 6. The locations do not have parking for 10K to 30K people. So, they have to fine places nearby for all of the cars for the crowds. 7. They have to set up busses to shuttle people from the parking to the event and back, including handicap shuttles. 8. They have to shut off the nearby roadways for the shuttle activities and coordinate all of this with the local police. 9. The have to get the POTUS in and out safely. Each event must give the SS terrible heartburn and Trumps willingness to do all of these shows true courage. It is the most remarkable and effective operation I have even seen. Pulling it off as well as they have is the single best reason Trump should be re-elected. Posted by: Brian at October 30, 2020 12:56 PM (eV752) 510

518 Texas of 2020 isn't Texas of 2000 or even 2010. There has been a massive demographic shift in the state from immigration (legal and illegal) and out of state migration to the state. Ironically TX is a victim of its own success. Conservative policies created an economic boom that attracted liberals who are now voting to kill that boom.
Posted by: Asshoes at October 30, 2020 12:54 PM (22mNy) That's the Dem narrative. I actually think Trump has a real good chance of winning the Hispanic vote in Texas. I will vote in person myself on Tuesday. We are in Mass. so our votes won't have much of an effect locally, but every single vote might help Trump with the popular vote.

MTV had three possible paths:
1 - Use your channel as a way to showcase new, fresh, exciting and interesting talent that the music industry ignores, creating fans and influencing music, which means losing backing and access to music industry events and releases. 2 - Keep just showing videos that the music industry foisted on them, and drop to Shopping Channel-level ratings because the music is such crap 3 - Stop showing music videos and do reality shows that are awful but eye-catching like train wreck They chose 3 and have stayed in pretty good business. It was their godawful show about sticking 4 miserable 20-something idiots in a house and filming it that kicked off the reality show wave. But it's hard to get a feel for just how many people in Texas *don't* live in those hubs. The State has a very widely dispersed population, much more so than any of the western states, including California. The 15 biggest counties are probably 60/40 Biden. But the other 239 counties are 80/20 Trump. (and this is where Pollsters go wrong in statewide polls, they concentrate on the 15 high population counties, because it's easier that way) Posted by: Tom Servo at October 30, 2020 01:03 PM (Kpl3J) 570

The national popular vote compact will never stand in the supreme court.
A law that circumvents the constitution is just as unconstitutional as a law that disobeys it. The constitution assures us a republican form of government and the national pop vote compact violates that. I wouldn't trust the Judas Roberts to agree with that, but he'll be outvoted at least 5-4 before it becomes an issue, and maybe 6-3 if Trump gets to replace Breyer. If you want to believe that the same polls that say both that Cornyn is up comfortably and that Texas is competitive in the presidential race, I can't stop you. But there's not really any reason to believe it's competitive other than accepting that polling at face value. And I don't think that polling data makes a lick of sense. You either have to believe that Cornyn is especially popular (he hasn't been in a long while) or that Trump is losing a large part of his own base (despite the fact he's enjoyed strong support among his base and carried Texas by almost 10 points last time). I told SaltyDog the story. I'll tell y'all here though I despise advertising charity. I like to do so in private and not virtue-signal. However, the greater point here is civil society and what it can do, and how it, um, trumps government.
I was recovering from a protracted hospital visit over the summer when word got to me that the nearby town's FD was putting together a fundraiser for a boy stricken with cancer. I was just puttering around the house in recovery, with nothing to do, and hadn't baked in awhile, and "fuck cancer", so...why not fire up my oven and see what I could do? So I baked over 100 cookies for the event and they made their way to the FD for the occasion. It was the least I could do. And I was far from the only one who jumped in. Plenty of people rallied to the boy's cause and worked to at least remove one aspect of stress from the family's life. Once again, this is a great example of a town coming together for a great common cause, and it's ONE example. I'd be willing to bet towns across America do this sort of thing all the time. Wife and I drive Meals on Wheels. Never fail to meet others doing volunteer work. Might be because of how I got into this, but most of what I see is staffed--volunteers--from churches. Our church--PCUSA--will put out an email that somebody needs--a ride to a doctor appointment, maybe--and it will be covered. No sweat. There's an app, Meal Train. Somebody needs some help, asks, admin puts it in with names, dietary issues, others offer to provide for one date or another. That way you don't get baked chicken three days running. Hand to Hand collects food, bags it and delivers to elementary schools for kids on reduced/free lunch to take home for weekends. If you're not into it, you won't see it among all the other things going on. In a trailer park, ran into a young lady with a lawn mower who was doing lawns for folks with mobility issues. No fuss, no self-advertising. Out every week. Posted by: Richard Aubrey at October 31, 2020 08:59 AM (Kbz6P) Processing 0.07, elapsed 0.0845 seconds. |
