FaceBook is Recruiting Its Censorship AI Programmers From an Interesting Source: Communist China
Perfect. FaceBook is importing censorship and social control from their Chinese partners.
You know what we need? More globalization and more race-to-the-bottom social control policies imported from Communist China.
China is one of the most censorious societies on Earth. So what better place for Facebook to recruit social media censors? There are at least half a dozen "Chinese nationals who are working on censorship," a former Facebook insider told me last week. "So at some point, they [Facebook bosses] thought, 'Hey, we're going to get them H-1B visas so they can do this work.'" The insider shared an internal directory of the team that does much of this work. It's called Hate-Speech Engineering (George Orwell, call your office), and most of its members are based at Facebook's offices in Seattle. Many have Ph.D.s, and their work is extremely complex, involving machine learning -- teaching "computers how to learn and act without being explicitly programmed," as the techy website DeepAI.org puts it. When it comes to censorship on social media, that means "teaching" the Facebook code so certain content ends up at the top of your newsfeed, a feat that earns the firm's software wizards discretionary bonuses, per the ex-insider. It also means making sure other content "shows up dead-last." Like, say, a New York Post report on the Biden dynasty's dealings with Chinese companies.

Right? Remember when someone let lose a machine learning AI on twitter a few years back, it was supposed to learn from interacting with people on twitter, and was this big project about how far AI had come.

For a major outfit like Facebook, the clear answer is option #1, because they have scale and user considerations that virtually no other firm does. But this leaves you in a bind - if you're going to build it, you need to know how. This in turn leads to another choice:
1) Build it from scratch
2) Take a shortcut and hire people and partner with firms that already know how to do it.
So if you have automated censorship as a goal and know that the vagaries of your organization mandate something bespoke, then it is entirely sensible to go to the people who are *really* good at it to get help.
That's what Facebook did. Red China has more experience, in terms of both theory and implementation, in automated censorship at scale than any other outfit on this planet.

Russians - especially the middle-aged ones - tend to be *very* good programmers. They came up in a time when computing resources were precious and hard to get and it wasn't uncommon to prepare all the code in advance and be extremely careful with it because you might only get one shot this month to compile and test it. As a result, a lot of Russian programmers of a certain age tend to write extremely efficient, well-optimized and well-behaved software. They're extremely disciplined. Not all of them, of course, but it isn't unusual.

1. It's true that current "AI" is a bag of machine learning tricks that imitate one or two things that the nervous system does at a low level. It's important to realize what it is and isn't, and understand the limitations. (OTOH, these algorithms can do very interesting things with image recognition, scene segmentation, that classical algorithms couldn't by any stretch. That isn't peanuts. Automated sentries are one application.)
2. However, while consciousness is perhaps the most complicated thing by orders of magnitude in nature, it exists in nature, and therefore we already know it's possible. (Unlike, say, the warp drive, or D-T fusion reactors below a certain very large minimum viable size.) (Yes, one of these is unknown physics, one of these is engineering.)
Just about everything that exists can be reverse engineered and engineered with the right tools, provided we learn what we are doing. I'd say it's only a matter of time, and if we can keep from compulsively doing disasterously evil and stupid things along the way, it'll be an era-making adventure learning how the mind works.

In college, at least American students have been made aware of the Constitution. Their parents and adults they grew up under generally understand and believe in the Constitution, no matter how flawed their interpretation.

Thank you Fen, 55 years ago, when I and my classmates were watching the Peanuts specials before holidays, we were not trying to determine who was gay, transgender, etc. We all knew the dumb nice kid you could take advantage of, his smart, not attractive friend, his sister who was a nasty crab to everyone, the kid that was always a slob, and the kid with the perfect hair and talent . The Peanuts were recognizable as familiar and their adventures made us think about how we could be kind, how we did dumb things or were mean to people.
The Peanuts gang had virtue and sensibilities, with things turning out well in the end. They taught lessons , not unlike parables.
They are very much needed today.

It seems to me that they have been out on disc for a while, and if so, purchasing the set would be wise, before the entire catalog disappears. There has been some, and I think in the right direction, it just hasn't gone far enough yet. They upped the minimum wage for a lot of H1Bs, but it needs to be a sliding scale relative to each firm. If you want an H1B because they bring something really worth having to the table (that's the point of H1Bs), then you won't blink if you have to pay him 120% of your firm's median salary for that job title and description.
