An accident? Really? That's weird, everytime I beat it in front of a computer I meant to do it. The absolute worst take comes, naturally, from National Review. Bear in mind the rule at National Review, and among all the media "conservatives:" If someone can't get you a job, join the mob and destroy them. On the other hand, if someone can get you a job, mount a self-righteous, sanctimonious defense of that person. There is no principle here -- only back-scratching mercenary Yuppie careerism. Because Jeffrey Toobin could whisper in an editor's ear and get a NeverTrumper a job, he has to be defended, unlike, say, the Proud Boys or Roseanne Barr or anyone not in the Democrat Media Complex that media "conservatives" are always sucking off.

In that case, I should specify who it is who's defending him. I assume the National Review applies a similar rule. But apparently this rule gets suspended at National Review when someone is smearing a group that cannot get NeverTrumpers a job, to wit, "right wing" "howler monkeys." I guess we're just supposed to take this tribalist Hate Merchant's word for it, National Review?

Obviously, I read and listen to a lot of poll nerds. A few I've been paying attention to are trying really hard to get real polls with a rational basis.
Go figure, their polls are showing Trump with a slight or better lead in the swing states.
But they still have bias against any information that is not in their polls. After freely admitting from the beginning that 98% of people they ask to take a poll say no, they won't give any credence to very visible signs of Trump strength and enthusiasm, like the size of the rallies.
They just fall back automatically to "rally size doesn't really mean anything".
They are literally saying that 15 people that they polled that said they need Trump to show concern for their fears, are more important than 15,000 people showing up on a frozen night in Erie PA.
It is such an odd blind spot. I guess when your career is spent in one little bubble, it is hard to break out of it.

But every so often, you have to lift up your eye off the excel spreadsheet and look out and say, "does this make any sense?"
They did it enough to say the polls they were seeing were nonsense, so went in to get their own data sets.
But polling is not the be all and end all of understanding an election. They are missing some huge factors, like the influence of GOTV on election day. They fall back to saying things like "Trump better hope these people show up".
Pretty sure the Trump campaign isn't hoping. They already know.

But polling is not the be all and end all of understanding an election. They are missing some huge factors, like the influence of GOTV on election day. They fall back to saying things like "Trump better hope these people show up".
Pretty sure the Trump campaign isn't hoping. They already know.

What I think we are seeing - and it is nerve racking since we won't be able to be sure of this until after the election results are in, but what I *think* - is that we are seeing the results of the same overconfidence in, and over-reliance on computer modeled statistical methods that we have watched spreading in the Global Warming fight and the Covid modeling. In all of these areas, we keep seeing younger computer modelers taking their programs for granted and simply assuming that, if it comes out of a computer, it Must Be the Truth! They have no clue about the systemic errors and false assumptions built into their models, and since these models are telling them what they want to hear, they don't want to know.

Media and academics are completely detached from human nature...so polling based on that is not going to happen. When I worked with our local precinct captain in SC back when I just got out of the Navy, it was all about GOTV. Not flyers and events - they were fine - but knocking on doors and coming around on election day and getting these people to the polls. It took a lot of hand holding, a lot of work and it was the golden rule, get people to the polls...I wonder if the Dems and the left are up to that kind of work now...well see. I doubt it though.

I have been looking at Pennsylvania and the counties that went big for Trump are coming in at a significantly higher rate.

The TV just turned off and I couldn't figure out why. Then I see the Roku remote buried under some papers and when I set my cell phone down on that pile, it toggled the power button on that remote, which turned off the TV set for me even though I didn't touch the TV remote.

If I were his boss, though, yeah, he'd be fired. For a couple of reasons...
1. This sort of behavior, pulling it on a conference call, crosses the line into sexual harassment. Keep him around, and you open yourself up for potential liability.
2. It'll be harder for viewers to take him seriously as a pundit in the future. He'll appear on-screen, and all anyone will be thinking about is him rubbing one out. Any sense of gravitas or seriousness he had as a thinker is gone.
I'm fine with them keeping him around, though, so people can laugh at him and maybe the network can be sued.

This is the ultimate first world problem.
naw. one of my tv's apparently has a "toggle power" signal instead of "power on" and "power off". every now and then, i'll plunk down and punch the "on" button on my remote, but the tv will miss it. the tv and the directv box now disagree about whether they are on or off. sometimes it takes a while and a finger strategically placed over one or the other remote receiver (which means i have to get *out* of my chair, grumble grumble) to sort it out.

There was a kid who was like 5' 5" tall and weighed 135 lb when he was 8 years old. My younger son played against him, and my son was in 5th grade at the time.
His dad was like 6'9" tall and probably weighed north of 350 then. This was about 13 years ago.
The kid is now 20 or 21 and is the starting center for Ohio State's basket ball team. He is probably 6'9" and 270, and all muscle.

Back in my younger days in school, and throughout my 20s, I was fascinated by floating point. And old Monroe '50s era calculator helped me understand how computers did arithmetic, visually. For isntance, watching that thing do division by repeated subtraction.
One of the most enlightening courses I ever took was one on numerical analysis. This deals with the pitfalls of finite precision floating point arithmetic.
A key concept is numerical conditioning, which tells you how noisy your calculation is going to be. There are many, many programmers out there who have to write floating point routines who know nothing about that subject.
A simple example, one we did in that course right off the bat was this simple exercise. Calculate e^x by series approximation.
Works well when x is positive. Now go with negative x and that series summation goes to hell quickly. Total loss of significance. Your result is pure garbage, nothing but amplified noise due to round-off error.
There's an easy fix. Calculate e^(-x) as 1/e^x.
And from there, you delve in the concept of Conditioning, and to calculate the conditioning of the arithmetic operations you're going to perform.
That makes things very counter-intuitive sometimes.
