Saturday Afternoon Chess thread 10-17-2020

mariam mansour UAE 01.jpg
Mariam Mansour (UAE)

We will have a fishing thread later, presumably. As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Pic Note:

Zombie from last week:

OK, here she is: The girl whom everyone in the chess world agrees is the most beautiful chess player ever to play a rated game -- a low-level player on the United Arab Emirates women's team in the Chess Olympiad several years back.

Here name is Mariam Mansour. She only ever played a few games, back in 2006.

She appeared out of the blue, played a few games for the UAE team, then was never seen again. Dazzling. She was FIDE rated in the 1800s.

Couple of things: I'm not sure I agree she's *the* most beautiful chessplayer. Or, at least, I'd need to see more photographs before I'd make that assessment. I'll let you morons decide for yourselves. Unfortunately, as zombie noted, there just aren't that many photographs of her online.

Also, Mansour's FIDE page is blank, no ratings, no demographic info, not much of anything. Which is kind of weird. It's like she doesn't exist. But zombie provided a link to one of her games, so we know she actually was a tournament player, however briefly. Not sure why she disappeared.

Problem Solutions

Beginner Problem - White To Play

20201017 - Problem 1.jpg
r3rb1k/pb3ppp/5p1N/2p2P1Q/1pP5/1P6/qB4PP/5RK1 w - - 0 1

This probably could've been an intermediate problem, it's a little tough:

1.Qxf7 Bd5

Or 1...Bd6 2.Qg8+ Rxg8 3.Nf7#

2.cxd5 Bd6
3.Qg8+ Rxg8
4.Nf7#

Another smothered mate.

Intermediate Problem - Black To Play

20201017 - Problem 2.jpg
r5k1/ppp2ppp/8/3P4/3NP3/1P2PKbb/PB2Q1Pq/R4R2 b - - 0 1

1...Bg4+
2.Kxg4 Qh4+
3.Kf3 h5
4.any Qg4#

Advanced Problem - White To Play

20201017 - Problem 3.jpg
k2rn1r1/1p1b4/3p4/1P3p1q/2NNpbn1/8/5BPP/1R2R1QK w - - 0 1

Answer:

1. Ra1+ Kb8
2. Ra8+ Kxa8

Not 2...Kc7?? 3.b6#

3.Ra1+ Kb8
4.Ra8+ Kxa8
5.Qa1+ Kb8
6.Qa7+ Kxa7
7.Nc6+ Ka8
8.Nb6# 1-0

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

35 As Melania Trump went to visit the Queen Fabiola Children's Hospital in Brussels, she went for a softer form of power dressing. Sure it was a leather suit with snakeskin pumps, but the blush color was certainly feminine and approachable.

Melania has found the perfect balance of chic and conservative in this custom leather suit by Maison Ullens, a Belgian designer that has a charity which provides women undergoing cancer treatment with wigs, cosmetics, scarves, and support to continue feeling beautiful. Talk about a thoughtful choice!

Well, see, with people there are other things mixed in with the love, stuff like occasional resentment or jealousy. You love your aged mother, but you resent the time you spend taking her to the grocery, etc. Then you feel guilty, which is another thing in the mix.

Posted by: OregonMuse, AoSHQ Thought Leader, Pants Monitor & Social Distancing Professional at October 17, 2020 05:36 PM

As a veteran of many Oktoberfests, I can tell you that Germans get just as drunk as the rest of us.
The mugs/steins hold one liter. The typical fest mugs are made of glass but the smaller fests and local breweries and gasthouses will use clay mugs. I have a nice collection from my years in Germany.
My favorites are one from Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, and one from Kulmbach which is from a monastery. It is beautifully painted. And there is my dreaded 3 liters mug from Baren-Brau in Neustadt o.d. Waldnaab. I have only filled it and emptied it twice, once when I left Germany and again when I retired from the Army.
It is a party in a mug!

155 The second problem is actually the most difficult of the three. Very subtle little dance, with delicate timing.

The real "problem move" black has to deal with is white's Nf5, which covers the mating square on g3 momentarily, but more importantly then allows the pawn to move forward with f4-f5, givng the white king "luft" (as they say in German and Yiddish).

I don't want to commit to posting the "solution" until I see all the possible flaws. Haven't done so yet.

Way way WAY over the top current events type garbage themes.

I won't spoil too much for those who intend to watch it, but there's an immigration storyline, and a "cool" congresswoman who is clearly meant to resemble a certain bug eyed former barmaid from New York.

Really hits it so blatantly, I haven't even bothered to finish watching the last episode. I might, just to see, but it's garbage.

Then I noticed Seth Rogan is involved in the production.

That answers that, as to where it went wrong.

Meh, the Maginot Line gets an undeserved bad rep. The plan was always to fight the Germans in Belgium: the purpose of the ML was to prevent the Germans from attacking elsewhere, thus allowing the French to concentrate their forces in a battle in a small area where German numerical superiority would be neutralized, and the French would have Belgian and British assistance. The failures were mostly due to politics which prevented its extension along the Belgian border, as well as the belief that the Germans couldn't attack through the Ardennes.

399 Steve Kornaki is the poll guy at NBC/MSNBC with the Big Board.

Yesterday he had a segment where he said they went back to their flawed 2016 polling and made fixes and then applied those fixes to 2020. (I expect this was mostly flawed Turnout assumptions.) Lo and behold, Trump is now ahead in most of the battlegrounds and close in the others. I expect Trump is ahead in all, if other fixes were made (high Shy Tory, Hispanics turning to Trump, etc.)

So he and NBC are quietly admitting that they've been lying to everyone for months with bad polls.

425 FBI agents are investigating whether emails allegedly found on a laptop at a Delaware repair shop discussing presidential candidate Joe Biden son's supposed business activities in Ukraine are linked to a foreign intelligence operation, according to a report.

Two sources familiar with the matter told NBC on Thursday night bureau chiefs are looking into the possibility that the email cache - allegedly belonging to Hunter Biden - may have been unearthed with help from a power hostile to the US, such as Russia.

This is devestating for Biden.

All of the polls showing a Biden lead, the respondants claimed they have ALREADY voted, and Biden leads among them 3:1.

60% Democrats polled nationwide day they will vote early, vs 30% GOP. Democrats must outnumber Republicans but 30-40 points in early voting to overcome election day where 2 of every 3 votes will be for Trump.

If Democrats don't pick up the pace in Michigan, Trump will win by a landslide in the state.

452 So the "white supremacist", drug-running, gun-running gangs are white supremacist, but, um, mostly drug-running and gun-running.

The sensors are long since over-loaded, the language exhausted, the national degradation off the charts, but this "white supremacy" thing is making a run to crack the highly competitive top few spots for unbelievable idiocy.

Racism in the form of "affirmative action", quotas, preferences, absurd racist indoctrination ("CRT"), even "reparations" proposals has defaced the constitution, the country, the society, for years. Its impact is getting people killed, lives and neighborhoods destroyed, and turning half the country into idiotic emotional 10-yr olds.
It's real, and it's spectacular.

"White supremacy" is a phrase without any real world meaning, any program, any political organization or even idea, any public understanding, interest, or sympathy.

"Journalists" might as well demand Trump denounce the Martian colony established in New Jersey that's kidnapping thousands of children every week to use as food, or the ghosts and spirits that have taken over NORAD, expelled the Air Force personnel, and are trying to foment nukyler combat with the russkis.

It's beyond absurd, very disturbing, and Trump and others playing along with this bizarre idiocy is disappointing, to say the least.

I'll have to check, but it's possible they explain it better in the book. In a way that makes more sense in their universe. If I recall correctly though, this was one detail they didn't change from the book to the show, how Translucent was gotten to.

The book is at least as, if not more gory than the show. There are things they aren't willing to do in the show, and what's bugging me more than anything about it is how two-dimensional they can make it all look, on a teevee show with all the budget and live humans acting, whereas on a page of a comic book, characters are more fleshed out, more real, more complex.

482 San Franpsycho, you're harsh - but fair. If there was ever a case to use to illustrate how not to accept false premises, and how disastrous it is do so, this would be it. Every time I see it happen I'm dumbfounded.

Skip - it's kind of obvious but I've said it here this week. If things go as they well might - Trump margins in FL, NC, NH - even VA, even a losing score, but very very close - it may indeed be an early night, as a practical matter. Because these things will be unlikely to be accompanied by losses in the Midwest.

483 "White supremacy" is a phrase without any real world meaning, any program, any political organization or even idea, any public understanding, interest, or sympathy.

There is an article in today's NYT saying that the idea of white supremacy as the KKK and similar organisations is outdated and that white supremacy now includes college admissions relying on SAT scores and what art museums curate.

Didn't a lot off Democrats vote my mail?
This is a weird time with the pandemic and all, thinking a lot of people want to vote early, social distancing is also creating long lines
I've already voted early along with most of my family members all voting for Trump.

It isn't going to happen, but I'd like to hear President Trump say something like:

"I condemn both the concept of 'superficially identifiable' supremacy, and that of #SuperficiallyIdentifiablePrivilege as being contrary to our Constitution.

I believe that either "All Lives Matter!" or our society will evolve into "No Lives Matter!".

I believe that Constitutional laws should be equally enforced on, and obeyed by, all legal citizens."

Ah such dreams...

489 In a weird parallel between this board and real life, I'll be watching a live stream of Refugee daughter's University Symphony performance later this evening. They're performing some Vivaldi and Tchaikovsky.

Accompanying the performance will be several bottles of Octoberfest currently chilling in the frig.

My text messages to her, pleading for a switch to Wagner, are not being answered.

490 Bander, well that both confirms my point - there's no real world phenomenon to go along with the normal meaning of the words - and further confirms that these racist nutjobs are as dumb, and as racist, as the actual Nazis.

Of course none of them has the knowledge, or probably native intelligence, to begin to understand this.

The country is dumbed down beyond recognition, and to see public figures stipulating some of the most odious and delusional nonsense coming from the racist airheads, by accepting their ridiculous premise, is sickening.

493 And the absurd, unscientific framework within which the "doctors" made their idiotic recommendation, is one still completely embraced by Trump (simplified, that we can manage a viral respiratory epidemic, as opposed to get through it).

One of the topics for the "debate" this week (again, WTF with accepting any part of this - format, "moderator", questions?) is "Fighting COVID".

Oh - and "climate change"!!!!!!

They left off "Fighting Gravity.

Or "Fighting Entropy in the Universe".

Or "Making Water Run Uphill".

495 Greetings:

If you're struggling with Wagner, you could try some Sibelius. He mostly hates Russians which I think is still at least semi-okay and has written lots and lots some with stirring martial aires. Finnish music goes well with a bottle of almost anything.

500 OM, I know the solutions are technically there, but it would be nice, at least maybe for the beginner board, to have it in plain English. I've played for over 40 years, but I have no damn clue how to read that code, and can't invest the time to learn it. Just a little begging.

1. Qxf7 [This is not a check. So why would black move either bishop when his pawn at g7 is free to move? 1... gxh6 and the threat to Black is gone.]

1. Nxf7+ Kg8
2. Bxf6 [Plays right into Black's hands. 2... Qxg2#!]

I don't think white has a winning position here.
