"V" Shaped Or "K" Shaped Recovery Depends On What You Do And Where You Live

As if the attempted destruction of our economy to destroy President Trump wasn't enough for the Acela-Hyde Park-Madison-Austin-SF-Portland Malibu corridor!

The drive to shift their economies to a non-manufacturing-high-"education" work force has allowed many of their most vocal supporters to continue to work from via the internet. And isn't that lovely...except that the service industries that support those slim-hipped hipsters have been crushed. All of those line cooks and dishwashers and janitors and sales clerks and maintenance men and cab drivers and the hundreds of other segments of the economy that can't pick up their tools and work from home have been disproportionately impacted by the draconian Wuhan Flu rules that governors and mayors in mostly blue states (but sadly some red!) have enacted. Their deepest masturbatory fantasies of being supreme rulers have been satisfied!

Here is Coyote Blog discussing that point, with an additional theory about just who was most impacted.

"Work From Home & Socialize via Zoom" Is the Height of Elite Priviledge [sic]

I have been pointing out since April that stay at home orders tend to be supported by folks who either a) are rich with lots of savings; b) have professional jobs and can work from home (eg journalists) or c) get paid even if they don't work (eg government workers and teachers). A lot of folks on the Left that lecture the rest of us constantly on privilege have shown zero self-awareness in advocating for the most privilege-biased government order in my memory.

So it should not be shocking that the results of the COVID business lockdowns have disproportionately hit lower income and less educated workers.

I would like to see some additional data about the economic impact by state, and whether the budding fascists in NY and CA and IL and several other blue states have been worse for their most vulnerable workers than the typical red state governors.

As for his last sentence? maybe, maybe not, but it's interesting.

I think there is a good chance other cultures more used to relying on larger networks and multi-generational extended families are having a particularly hard time with the order to limit social contact to zoom.
My observations of NYC suggest that it is the politically vulnerable minorities that are most impacted. And who are they? Orthodox Jews have borne the brunt of de Blasio and Cuomo's crackdowns, but large gatherings of other minorities have been allowed to a much greater degree by the jack-booted thugs of government.

It will be interesting to see the voting patterns this November!

I've often wondered if many of the politically incorrect statements by various celebrities are driven by this same concept - say, Martina Navratilova first criticizing men pretending to be women so they can play in women's sports, and then issuing the proper apology after media chastisement and dropping the subject.

Retail in the US tends to change it's make up about every 20-25 years or so since about 1920.

Small independent retailers were the norm until then end of WWII when Chain Department stores started opening up in most Cities downtown areas. Sears, Penny's, Woolworth's, etc.

They stayed the kings of retail until the "Mall" movement got going in the late 60s early 70s and stores moved to indoor malls located away from the downtown districts and those large National Department store Chains started dying.

Then came the Walmart behemoth that started in mid 80s and exploded in the 90s that would alter the retail world once again. Sears and Penny's are literally on their last legs because of Walmart.

Amazon closely followed in the 00s and is still growing while Walmart has saturated the market in the US and is actually closing some under performing stores.

I was driving on the South Loop under Dallas about a month ago, and on the access road next to it I saw something I had not seen before - at least 75 full sized semi trailers all lined up and waiting, so I looked to see where they were headed and could see at least 100 more all stacked up, waiting to get into the facility.

And then I noticed that almost all of them had the "Prime" logo on the side, and they were all waiting to be loaded up at the Amazon Prime distribution center.

It's like the music industry, who made a lot of money being the gatekeepers, and tried to keep their position as gatekeeper even though the internet meant that everyone could be their own gatekeeper, and they weren't needed anymore.
The publishing industry, too.

It's very similar to how the media is desperately trying to put a lid on social media as a means to disrupt their narratives. Sorry, you're not the gatekeepers, any more.

I'm halting a move in Texas based on this election. Texas doesn't have an income tax (yet). With the huge influx of parasites that are at peace with income taxes, and with the growing education cartel's influence and desire to plunder the state Treasury, and with the diminished severance taxes on oil production - Texas will likely end up with an income tax on top of their obscene property taxes.

132 There's a devastating set of graphs showing job loss/recovery in the 4 biggest recessions of recent times (1990, 1999, 2008, now), comparing the situation for the top and bottom income quintiles (20%). In the previous events, not a big difference, over time. This time - bottom 1/5 job situation plunges much, much deeper than the top tier, and remains much worse.

And then there's the spectacular "disparate impact" from the (completely indefensible) school closures, which if anything is even worse than the jobs and income one.

And that one's kind of perfect, in an idiotic, pernicious way: among the most destructive and negative forces in modern society - debased, unionized public "education" - stupidly jealously selfishly arrogantly imposing and amplifying *the* worst thing to happen to children of middle- and lower-income households, in our history. 153 Remember when we saw that famous pic of Sasse, all sweaty in running clothes sitting on a wall and listening intently to whatever Schumer was telling him?
Trump must be scaring him straight. It's helpful that Sessions lost, and that most of the people Trump endorsed have won. Note that Murkowski has been very subdued since he promised he'd campaign against her in two years.

Posted by: artemis at October 18, 2020 01:01 PM (AwPyG)

154 Oh, that's wildly optimistic and I think simply disregarding obvious reality to think that Trump being in the WH was the key driver of the abandonment of science and previous doctrine with the mass "mitigation" effort.

The technical mediocrity and insane authoritarian impulses of the CDC and "public health" authorities down to the frequently farcical county health directors is a thing - it's not an artifact of a 2020 election cycle.

And the failure to confront it, outside a handful of jurisdictions - and pretty much completely, at the federal level - is more than ominous for the future.

Which may explain part of why the education cartels are threatening to resume their human kennel services once the votes have been officially counted.

Since Trump is likely to have four more years, the government parasites sitting out expecting full compensation are going to be seen by many as a target for those who have been curb stomped by this Plannedemic.

159 I'm halting a move in Texas based on this election.

It's when you go into high end areas that people are far more paranoid (borderline superstitious and silly) than lower class areas.

Even if you are apolitical or maybe lean towards the Democrats on some issues, I have to think it's known that one candidate wants to get back to normal quicker than the other candidate.

You are referring to a program that pays CoViD trained nurses $5-10k / week to go to underserved hospitals. The way inflated pay rate has everything to do with the huge amounts of government money being spent on anything CoViD.

There are many nurses who are quite upset that they are getting paid a tiny fraction of what these contractors are receiving. During the furlough, many nurses who were sent home seriously considered the gigs. When word of this went to the supervisors of the hospitals, these nurses living on savings were told that if they did these contract gigs, that when the furlough was over they would not have a job to return to.

Serious stupidity and malice all around on this CoViD disaster. People will go to Hell over their handling of this.

233 Yeah, I don't quite buy that Walmart killed Sears and JCP.

Those two survived competition from K-Mart and other discount
department stores very well and established themselves as stores for the
solidly middle class --- fair prices overall and a range in quality
from so-so to very high. And their catalog offerings were wonderful.

Posted by: Margarita DeVille at October 18, 2020 01:19 PM (M/9m0)

I suspect Sears and JCPennys stopped being principally retailers who dealt with high end stuff and clothings, and moved to being credit companies that stopped caring about quality merchandise as much as credit terms.

At that Amazon and Ross and WalMart had them out competed, since it was just as easy or easier to buy middle quality stuff at WalMart, and at least locally, WalMart has better parking/

lol

The technical mediocrity and insane authoritarian impulses of the CDC

health directors is a thing - it's not an artifact of a 2020 election
cycle.

And the failure to confront it, outside a handful of jurisdictions -
and pretty much completely, at the federal level - is more than ominous
for the future.

I am tired of being told, as if I don't know " show me where in the Constitution that Trump can stop the mask mandates".

Dudes, that's not the point. We were inundated for months by "experts" in epidemiology, virology, immunology, biological warfare, Chinese history and politics, economics, finance, corporate strategy, food production, logistics, manufacturing of PPE and on and on.

Not a single fucking "expert" to read through the Bill of Rights and explain how NONE of the accomplishment of this shit matters if we give up even a tiny fraction of what our Creator bestowed on us? And how many Constitutional lawyers are there in DC?

This is my sticking point with the current administration.

306 Granted I don't get out much, but I haven't seen any "bad hombre" stuff in S.F. I did meet some old work colleagues last Friday (I had not been out socializing at all in years) on Divisadero Street near Hayes. 307 One of the more insidious ways the left is ruining free enterprise is that by their propping up of certain "favored" businesses, those businesses get very rich, and can afford to buy out any potential competition.
It's an old song-and-dance in the tech industry, any business that grows enough to have middle management isn't nimble anymore, so they squash all innovative competition by buying them out.

A lot of the brainiacs from Stanford Business School have one end in mind: create a start-up company that Google wants to buy for a lot of money.
And you can't really blame them, even though it hurts the big picture.

It's a good one, which proceeds from a basics-on-up perspective, about the mechanics of masks and aerosols, etc. It's not a medical study or meta-study - though it provides a decent technical overview of why *those* studies, going back decades, uniformly fail to find much or any benefit in masks for a situation like today.

And, FFS, when one clicks on the link where it is posted within any number of Twitter accounts (fellow dangerous scientists whoa are reposting it), one gets an "Unsafe" warning.

Actually, American labor could do well copying the German model of unions... a typical German 'union' is the rank-n-file employees as an organized group within a particular company, which then interacts with the company's management.

In Germany, there are NO 'national unions' per say, it's all at the local / company level. It's a matter of law, and compels management to work with their employees, rather than treating them like disposable droogs.

It is an attempt to keep access low, prices high, and quality unimportant.

396 I have an old school friend, retired state dept, who grew up blue collar Dem in NYC and worked her ass off to get into state.

She and her husband are retired on their Maine acreage in their historic cottage, that they have left ONCE since March.

She is mega lockdown face burka panic porn diva, who honestly believes, and has posted (also once) that it is extremely hard to be so good on behalf of so many stupid people who just don't take the sacrifice of people like her seriously, and how wearing it is to be locked up (in her historic home, on her acreage, with her pension and benefits the likes of which haven't been seen in the private sector for going-on two generations, ordering whatever she wants off of Amazon, and whining about missing going to Europe) CARING for these stupid people, who aren't even grateful for her sacrifice, by sharing mask memes.

I told her it sounded like something Colonel Jessup would write if he did women's magazine articles on unfair imposition of "emotional labor".

They recently took one week on Cape Cod to "get away from it all", and it kind of blew my mind that they were in a rented location previously occupied by whoever, cleaned by whoever, and so on, after driving and using public bathrooms used by whoever else, but safely fully masked there in off season splendor.

She posted photo after photo of completely empty attractions, with captions about how they couldn't visit the gift shop because there were PEOPLE in them, and beautiful expensive gourmet meals with small batch craft beers and ciders at outdoor venues.

Many comments on how they just couldn't go some places because even one or two people was just TOO SCARY, and I finally asked her how she thought it was sustainable for an entire tourist-based economy to be completely empty for her benefit, yet provide three gourmet meals a day (grown, gathered, prepped, served by...PEOPLE...all of whom come in contact with other...PEOPLE)?

She said it was sad.

Some people do not live in reality, haven't for some time, do not wish to, and believe it a virtue to vote to perpetuate it.

Scott Adams (Dilbert) has been making that point this week. He says that the two sides now live in completely different, parallel universes. They draw completely different conclusions from the same evidence. For example, they believe that Russia has obviously invented all of this Hunter stuff and given it to Rudy to protect their Agent, Trump. And only RAYCISTS! doubt that.

403 So after reading the comments above about the exodus from San Francisco, I texted my cousins in the bay area for verification. We used to vacation with them east of the bay, cross the bridge and go to China Town, Napa, Sonoma, etc. We were last out there 3 1/2 years ago for a convention. When I asked how the city was, I was told they haven't been over to SF since then except to get to the airport or back. They try to fly into and out of Oakland now to avoid it. Currently all the restaurants and retail spaces are closed and/or bankrupt. Between druggies and homeless it's not even safe to travel around the city. Shoplifters aren't prosecuted so there are no retail spaces now. Any building locked and closed is now subject to vandalism to reclaim any wires/metal/electronics to sell at a recycling center. My memories of San Francisco from years past makes this such a sad, sad mental image for me now.

My sister is a federal government employee. She is the only person in her department to work on site five days a week since the beginning of the pandemic. Some of the other govvies are NIW working on site a few days a week, but her manager never created a pandemic plan - no plan for bringing workers back, no plan for what should be done when employees must interact with the public, etc. The other department in her building is in worse shape. Many of the employees have moved out of the area, even though their jobs do not permit distance working.

The whole thing is an extended vacation for the paycheck privileged.
