NBA Finals Ratings Hit All-Time Low, Then Stay There

Lowest-rated finals in history.

Nobody anticipated good ratings for a fanless, football season NBA Finals, but this year's series is thus far underperforming the lowest expectations.

Sunday's Lakers-Heat NBA Finals Game 3 averaged a 3.1 rating and 5.94 million viewers, marking the lowest rated and least-watched NBA Finals game on record. The previous low was set two nights earlier by Game 2, which averaged a 3.6 and 6.61 million. The low before that was set by last Wednesday's Game 1, which as previously reported drew a 4.1 and 7.41 million.

Prior to this year, the record-lows were a 5.2 and 8.06 million for Nets-Spurs Game 2 in 2003.

Meanwhile Tucker Carlson is hitting ratings of 5.6 million.

It gladdens my heart to see people turning away from watching the games as I have (although TBH, I didn't watch the NBA anyway). Maybe go play in China? Set up a court in the Muslim camps and have a captive audience!

27 Those are tiny figures for a premiere national athletic contest. Under six million? That's not in niche market territory yet, but it's getting there. Tucker pulls nearly as many viewers regularly, and he is barely mainstream. Dan Bongino pulls in 1/6th of that consistently. He's a big name, but he is a seriously niche player - and he's pushing 20% of the NBA Finals' viewership.

That's inconceivable.

It gladdens my heart to see people turning away from watching the games as I have (although TBH, I didn't watch the NBA anyway). Maybe go play in China? Set up a court in the Muslim camps and have a captive audience!
______________

I still don't get the China thing. These pro sports teams think they can afford to lose U.S. audiences because the Chinese will make up for it? Really? Most of China's population is poor. Are they really going to be spending their meager income on over-priced NFL or NBA jackets and t-shirts and whatever other crap they put out, instead of spending it on food and rent and other necessities? And are the Chinese really going to feel strongly about teams composed of Americans who don't look anything like them, or speak their language, or have anything in common with them, and who are no longer even popular in the U.S.? What's the attraction?

++++++++++++
If their transition into a China-centric league with dominant revenues coming from the PRC is complete, with PRC carriage contracts and favorable environment over there, then he might be right. The audience they want is in Asia, and they might as well re-establish the NBA as a niche domestic player while they rake in Yuan from the slave state to which they've pivoted.

I don't know their books, but if they just need venues and live audiences and a small core of fans over here because they're making all their money over there, then Cuban might be right.

Posted by: TheHoser at October 06, 2020 12:04 PM (IDjUx)

Given your business, you'd like a story about cards from last winter. First, you may (or may not) recall a player named Oliver Miller drafted in the first round in 1992, went on to be the fattest player ever in the NBA, a total draft bust. Well my father, who died last year, had fallen into the hype when the Suns drafted him and bought some Mint Condition Oliver Miller cards, since he was going to be a superstar and they were going to be so valuable. Two of his grandsons who were in grade school each wanted one, but he said "no, I'm gonna put these up because they're going to be worth a lot." Yeah, right.

So, last winter, my brother and I are at his and mom's house, helping her go through and sort things after his passing (he pack-ratted an amazing and overwhelming amount of stuff), and we found these cards. The next morning my brother and I drove over to have lunch with his oldest son (my nephew) who had been a pretty decent forward in College ball and still liked the sport, and while we were eating my brother told him "Hey we were going through your Grampa's stuff, and we were surprised to find that he left a special legacy just for you, he remembered you always wanted this, and you should consider this your Inheritance." And then he handed him 5 Oliver Miller cards. My nephew looked at them and just put his face on the table.

157 It's interesting in all of this how the left is obliterating its own propaganda departments. the major sports leagues alienated a massive portion of their audience by kneeling to the radical elements on their player rosters.

In the same vein, the movie industry is outright dead thanks to the draconian Wuhan Virus protocols. You have Netflix going off the deep end with abominable filth that even many on the left can't abide. Social media has gone so deep into political censorship that they may well manage to boost the signal of some of
the messages they attempt to block.

All in all, as much of a nihilistically leaning pessimist as I am, I'm still amazed at how much the left is damaging its own tools by a steadfast refusal to temper its stridency. I enjoy any time that tools like Adam Silver or Roger Goodell shoot themselves in the foot, even if by doing so, they further damage institutions I once took great enjoyment from.

On the flip side, it also means that Americans lose just about every common shared public interest. Without being able to find any neutral ground on things like sports or pop culture, everything becomes a battlefield. And that was probably inevitable as divided as we are, ideologically at this point.

This is, I think, the practical reason for the pivot recently into "your silence is violence." The Left owns all cultural venues and dissent is now dangerous right down to the interpersonal level. So what do people who disagree do? Tune out, turn off and shut up. Silence is now close to the loudest dissent there is. So now silence must also be, well, silenced. You will actively agree or you will die. Even if this is successful I doubt it will drive up viewership, but at that point it won't matter. The cultural institutions will have served their purpose.

Related (somewhat) and relevant to this post, for years the St. Louis ABA team owners were getting a percentage of the NBA teevee revenue, due to a clause in the contract when the leagues merged.

At the time nobody thought they were getting a good deal, but this of course was before bazillion dollar teevee contracts.

I think it's over now, maybe the NBA found some friendly judge (do such things exist here in American, where we have the rule of law??) to let the NBA out of the deal, but I think it basically said "in perpetuity."

So these guys got filthy rich, doing not much other than sitting around counting their money.

==========

Cunningham canceled a town hall right after it blew up.

I think he's effectively done.

NC is much less of a worry now, I presume.

The best part of this is it has the Dems in a serious catch-22

Without Cal winning NC, they have pretty much no chance of taking the Senate. So the DNC Senate isn't going to give up on Cal, and neither will teh hard core Dems in NC.

But the soft "moderates" who the Dems need to win, aren't going to vote for a Lt Col who was cheating on his wife by screwing the wife of one of his Sergeants.

And they're going to be a lot less likely to vote for.a Dem Gov, or for Biden, when both are still embracing that philandering sleaze bag.

But the hard core will get pissed, and may not come out, if the Dems dump Cal.

So, who do they piss off?

I genuinely like baseball, and am still looking for a way to reliably stream Korean/Japanese/Taiwanese leagues so I can watch the game for its own sake.

But I hear you on the work stuff. I used to listen to sports talk radio on my commutes because then, no matter what, I could at least be part of conversations with coworkers. Lots of people watch a variety of sports and most of them don't interest me. I treated my commutes as small-talk prep and the prep work was sports talk.

264 And as far as the NBA goes, as a near life long Bulls fan, I was entranced by the majority of the Last Dance, which brought back wonderful memories of good times and joyously shared family celebrations. ESPN had toned down its political approach, was airing plenty of boxing and UFC events and I was almost looking forward to a new NBA season, especially with the Bulls having made long needed front office changes.

Then the riots struck.

Everything turned on a head, and all the good will was out the window as the Association and ESPN went full bore back into leftist boosterism. I believe they had a golden opportunity if they just managed to *temper* their desire to prioritize their leftist activism. That'd be all it took. Stand for the anthem, make some anodyne statements in favor of justice and healing and play the game, giving people something to unite over. But the radicals had taken hold and that's that.

Not sure about the "ordered" part, but it could very well be nobody needed to be ordered to stand, since the protest isn't against Chi Nah.

Now, if the NBA is playing Chi Nah anthem here in the USA, and players are standing for it, then kneeling for the U.S. anthem, that would be a LOT more messed up.

304 Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. It provides a liability shield to platforms that do not exercise editorial control over their content. As the platforms are not creating or editing content (their *users* are), they are not liable for things like slander and libel.

This is a critically important piece of law because of how it protects folks like Facebook and Twitter. This is where the distinction between a "platform" (no editorial control) and a "publisher" (editorial control) comes from. The NYT is liable for things like libel. Facebook is not (though technically the person posting the libelous content is).

This has become a bone of contention because of the censorship on those platforms. The platform operators are hiding behind "we remove or reduce content only according to our terms of service, and TOS exemptions are settled practices and law." This is true as far as it goes in most cases. If Twitter suppresses a user for TOS violations, they can usually point to where and how those violations occurred. The problem with this is that the platforms do not enforce the TOS consistently. If I a conservative tweets about wanting to burn down DC because it is a den of sin, it will be suppressed. If a leftist tweets about wanting to burn down DC because of Republican actions regarding the SCOTUS vacancy, it won't be.

That inconsistency in enforcement of terms of service that are often ambiguous in the first place is the key issue (as far as my understanding goes) around the Section 230 question as it relates to the major platforms.

Posted by: Tami at October 06, 2020 12:26 PM (cF8AT)

Sort of. It's part of the DCMA that says that websites are not considered "publishers" for the purposes of defamation suits, copyright infringement and whatnot if they are simply hosting other peoples content.

Originally, there was some concern that, say, a comment section of a blog (ahem) and it's late-90's equiviliences would open webpages up to lawsuits to the point that it would discourage online interaction, as every site would be afraid to host comments (the analogy being "letters to the editor" of local newspapers.)

That said, when you have social media companies actively editorializing on content, deleting content it does not approve of, etc. etc., they start looking much more like publishers then simply a website hosting other peoples views.

Lebron will have championships and scoring records, sure. He's a very large, athletic man. Shit. Shawn Bradley has NBA records.

As far as Tucker. I usually watch Tucker from an upstairs TV, not my main one. The upstairs one uses Amazon's FireStick. For the past week or so, the sound cuts out on Fox News, no other channel, just Fox News. I have found some temporary work arounds, but something is up.

Mark Belling touched on this yesterday. Biden is using his money now to hopefully influence mail in voting, and the belief is Trump is waiting until closer to the opening of in person early voting to do an ad drop.

Might Trump have written off WI, Maybe but he and Pence have been here a fair bit recently so I'd guess Trump is waiting to blitz with ads.

For Halloween, I guess we're all Chinese mask wearers.

One of my brother's in California was telling me this morning about he was walking to the grocery store the other day, outside on the street, across the street from anyone. He wasn't wearing his mask until he went inside.

Some guy across the street removed his mask and began yelling at him for not wearing his mask and killing people. He just said they are all going crazy as we know.

Happened to me at the gas station. I was far away, and pumping and paying at the pump and yet two old scolds were staring me down. I just ignored them and pumped my gas and left. Get a grip, man.

How many votes will switch to Trump after being harassed for perfectly safe behavior but being screamed at by a lunatic for it? They have to say to themselves, these are the left.

But beyond that, I have said before and I stand by it that the right answer to this is antitrust. We don't need any insane new laws. We need to break up the abusive monopolies and cartels. SV is both simultaneously. Where they don't monopolies (like Twitter does for "microblogging"), they collude (like on payments processing and web hosting).

And yet I was reliably informed that the "green new deal" was Crazy AOC's baby and she's a crazy leftist from the crazy leftist faction of the party that the mainstream of the party wanted to "control".

476 230 dates from the mid-1990s. Clinton era.

If that's such settled law that getting rid of it is "crazy," then conservatives may as well pack their bags and go home. One of my ongoing frustrations with today's "conservatives" is that it's not really clear what they are trying to conserve. It shouldn't be Clinton-era legislation.

They don't seem to be just corrupted by evil, they seem to be magnets for and incubators for evil. Give someone the slightest, tiniest power and it gets abused. It's been quite eye-opening.

488 "But at the same time, if we say that all content hosts on the
interest are publishers, we will strike a huge blow against the
internet. Like ace would almost definitely have to take down his comment
section if 230 were repealed."

Global access to online comments is a weird consequence of internet blogs, which are often more like people chatting at a bar, except with a wider group than just a few known friends.

But the rules for the conglomerates with massive control over all speech at Facebook or YouTube (and even Amazon, with its WaPo arm), is a different subject than "publishing" comments on a blog. Even writing posts for a blog is a different degree of publishing from the top down controls of monopolies like those two giants, that control the speech and revenue of all that plug into their SJW Monopoly Machine.

The answer seems to be better control over their censorship, sue them when they censor/defund based on partisan reasons. Right now they fabricate clearly fake reasons for shutting down conservatives like Mark Levin or even POTUS, but allow vile leftists to slander and threaten violence. That effectively "chills free speech" because of their monopoly power as a half trillion dollar Woke Corporate (publicly traded) power.

To participate in our free stock/bond markets, their are many SEC (and other) rules. These markets are the raod to dominance, but China and the Woke Left (and certain hedge funds pretending to be banks) can break all the rules, but congress to get bailouts for billionaires. That free ride for China financing must end ... this is not how "capitalism" should work.

498 Sure the NBA gets money from China, but they have to get it out of the country and the Chinese have often made that difficult with defacto capital controls and restrictions.
It's not like you can wire transfer $ 200M from your account in Shanghai to one at Citi in NYC.Also problematic is the CCP always uses patriotism and nationalism as a foil to distract from problems at home. Should the Chinese people be told to hate all things American, then you may see NBA and team earnings from local broadcast and streaming deals disappear or be drastically reduced.US TV rights, national: Disney/ABC/ESPN, TBS/TNT and local market media rights are the big cash drivers for the NBA.It's unknown if and how, TV rights could actually decline. However, many in sports media have written that Disney and Turner vastly overbid for the NBA TV rights on the last cycle, so the league and clubs may be in for a very rude awakening.
