As of Oct. 1, AT&T has stopped offering DSL as a new service, according to USA Today. Existing DSL subscribers, who connect to the internet via copper phone lines, will be grandfathered in. DSL is definitely old technology, but many people, especially in rural areas, still rely on it for internet access. Internet service providers have mostly focused on expanding cable broadband and fiber networks in wealthy metropolitan and suburban areas. Basically, if you don’t already have DSL service and you need to connect to the internet, you may be completely out of options. AT&T has seen the number of DSL subscribers slowly decrease over the years. The telecom reported 653,000 total DSL connections at the end of the second quarter of 2020, compared to nearly 14.5 million fiber customers, USA Today noted. That low DSL subscriber number is not surprising considering how broadband has grown and expanded since the ‘90s, but cutting off service without providing another option leaves many customers in digital darkness.

I have to go see the landlord tomorrow. When I was sick with Da Rona, I missed my weekend gig two weekends in a row, which caused a big dip in my finances. I told the landlord I was short and was told I could split the payment and get the rest paid in the middle of the month.
Tonight, when I came home, there was a notice on my door stating that if I don't pay the balance, plus another $100 in late fees, I'll be evicted.
I don't get paid for another nine days.

That's because AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, etc don't give a flip about rural customers. We struggled here for years on a tiny mobile broadband allowance at premium price. A few years ago we got Skynet, a fixed wireless service with no data cap.

This was a large part of moving to digital TV. Digital needs less width of the spectrum, so they can narrow the band needed for TV service.

I can understand the sadness from some about Eddie VH.

But he did have serious health issues for many years now and cancer was just one of them.
Probably my biggest shock about an artist was waking up to the clock radio early one morning, and having the rockjock telling me that Stevie Ray Vaughan had died in a helicopter crash, leaving a concert. SRV had quit drugs and drinking a few years before, and was at the top of his game at what, 35?
I was off my game for days.
Before that it was John Lennon. I was watching Monday Night Football, and Howard Cosell came on and said "oh, no!" That sucked, too.

You are welcome. Sometimes you can also get deals on used magazines, believe it or not, at pawnshops that sell firearms. The key is that you have to know what you are looking for.
H&K's are very nice firearms and I had a chance one time to buy the first polymer wondergun made by H&K well before Glock. I passed.
CDNN also sells H&K's from time to time as they are a clearing house for discontinued or slow selling models, parts for discontinued models, etc.
Rhomboid gave good advice on the number of magazines as they are consumables. If you go through training, they often have you act as in a real firefight and you drop the empty mag to the ground and get your spare to continue the fight. That can be a bit rough on the mag over time. During the time of mag size limitations during the Clinton years, a lot of folks kept their hi caps at home and used ten round magazines to train.
Brownells and MidwayUSA are the other two big gun parts warehouses online and you can get some repair parts for H&K's from them as well as accessories.

a) put the router on a 24 hour timer that reboots it every morning at 0500
b) installed a wireless power line switch so I can reboot the router without having physically go to the router during the day!

What usually seems to happen is that the woman goes to some guy who's served time for a low level crime, such as burglary. Of course the guy who served 2 to 10 for burglary, understands that first degree murder is, um, life without parole. My landlord is a sweetheart; she may be just doing the paperwork the apartment owners require. A little birdie (who I can neither confirm nor deny might be involved in this) told me that if I put in writing my intent to pay the balance when I get paid again, it should smooth things over.
If it doesn't...I don't anything I can sell, really. I've already sold my home studio equipment. I'll wait until tomorrow to see what might have to be done next. I'm slightly optimistic.

We just got home from our Tuesday evening date. Went to supper, then a movie. There were five people in the theatre, counting us two.
We saw "The Empire Strikes Back," thinking it would be fun.
Criminy, it does not hold up. It is a series of vignettes, not a coherent story. Luke is a whiny-@ss baby. Boring. Should have ended with the carbonite scene, but just...kept...going. To us, the best thing was the death count of the "Admirals" of Vader's fleet.

It is literally no longer a crime to release declassified documents to anyone that wants to get them.
FWIW, the documents would have to be released in a court case anyway during discovery so the effect on any future prosecutions is minimal and actually could make it easier in cases like the CIA or NSA where classification is often used like in Wolfe's case to hide misdeeds of others. That threat is gone now.

I am the eldest kid in my family. And while my home life was good, I quickly felt like I was shunted aside by my brothers and sisters, three of each.
But please understand that most of this was my fault. I love my folks. This was something I instigated. They did what they could with a rather tedious shitweasel.

Smoke detector starting chirping its "low battery" warning. After I figured out which one it was (turned out to be the battery backup on the hard-wired one), I twisted it off the base, and discovered that the neutral wire was not connected to anything. So then I had to figure out which breaker turn off. Luckily, it didn't take long, but it was still annoying.

However, in simpler terms, any leak now of these documents by anybody who has them represents no legal jeopardy anymore because of the order. Still have not seen the text of it but do not doubt that a public order by the president could be used as a shield against any possible prosecution.

The thing with evictions is that, since they go through the court system, they take a certain amount of time, at least according to landlords I knew. If someone ordinarily is dependable in paying their rent, the landlord would be a lot smarter to go with his agreement with Whitebread to pay part of the rent late. The threat of eviction is probably just a nasty way of trying to get the money faster. I'll bet the landlord doesn't really intend to go through the eviction process.

True story: I was working at home one day, when the DSL went out. This occurred frequently; and since it was mid-day, I went upstairs to have some lunch - only to be met by my wife, who asked me to carry out the garbage. When I got to the alley, I noticed an ATT service man on a cherry-picker, working on the box that serviced my home. I yelled up at him that he'd just knocked out my DSL. He apologized, and fixed it. Good thing I noticed him, or my service might have been out for days.
On another occasion, my service was out for nearly a week. The service guy who fixed it told me that he was from SBC (this was when ATT was still Ameritech, i.e., Illinois Bell, and its takeover by Southwest Bell lay in the future), and he said that either a squirrel had gotten into the box, or it had been serviced by an Illinois Bell tech - he couldn't tell which. Didn't exactly inspire confidence.
That being said, when I switched to the ATT U-verse fiber network, that all changed. It's been speedy and very reliable - and even a bit cheaper than DSL.

Yup, made the hotel reservation tonight. The biggest question is to fly or drive. Driving is way less hassle, but looong. Flying is faster, but waaay more of a pain in the ass. I would have to rent a car to get to the hotel. On the other hand, if I drive I won't be cramped up in an iron sausage wearing a mask, dealing with TSA, and all the bullshit, not to mention having to get to the car rental, wherever the hell that will be, and dealing with that. Then again the 3-4 flight and done is tempting. Decisions decisions.

I don't know how far a drive you are talking about, or from where to where (or even in what vehicle), but I have driven across the country quite a few times, and always found some pleasant places to stay along the way. Contrast that with the 1 million + miles I had to fly for business, which I never enjoyed at all. Food for thought, anyway.

I can't even get the *FAST* DSL where I live. And they stopped laying fiber a neighborhood over. Been at least 10 years now that I've made occasional checks about FiOS finally coming to my neighborhood and consistently gotten the "would you like us to email you when that service becomes available?"
F* them. They've forced me to shift to cable (of which there is exactly one provider, naturally) if I want to improve my speeds. (Did I mention I'm on the *slowest* DSL they have? And there's nothing faster?)
BTW, I live in a semi-rural area - it's rural in terms of roads, but increasing pockets of suburban density. (Which makes the roads oh so wonderful.)

Son works for Alaska Airlines, so we fly for free but it's standby. Which hasn't been much of a problem with air travel down by 70%. We even get first class sometimes.

District wireless is a good option, where available. Line-of-sight microwave to a tower, which can be up to about 15 miles away. Good upload/download speeds, not latency problems like satellite.

As far as "sustainable" agriculture, go back 100 years or better. A large fraction of the population had to work for their own food. I forget what the ratios were, but operative one is how many farmers/ag workers you need per unit population. X people to feed 100 people general population.
That ratio has been going down and is very small now. That all the evil chemicals and mechanization. Do away with that and that ratio will have to rise.

I looked up the numbers. In 1930, one farmer fed about 4 people. By 1960, that had risen to 1 per 26 people. By the 70s to 80s that number was 1 to 73.
That number is now 1 to 155.

Okay, I see. This was an umbilical hernia, from what I understand about the simplest one to fix.
There wasn't much pain to begin with, it was outpatient surgery, only took an hour.
However, getting into the car was a real treat. THAT HURT.
The rest has been uneventful, no real ouch and no swelling.

I made exactly one change by accident in January. Moved to a town with no Taco Bell (where I regularly ate). Didn't have to take any Nexium all year until today. Ate at a Taco Bell last night. See it costs as much for them to have a customer who's only getting dsl as a customer who's getting voice, dsl and video.
So they don't make much on the solo dsl customer plus they know that customer is getting their voice and video cheaper or at least they're getting to select what they're paying for so they want to eliminate that.
It's all a rip off and until the FCC stops regulating the delivery of these services it'll keep on being a rip off.
I currently use a local service that leases access from verizon. It costs less but I'm getting a lower reliability plus Verizon can put those lines at a lower priority for requests and thus altho the line speed is the same, the connection can be way slower if Verizon wants to screw around.
Can't complain to my local service cause they're not doing anything. Can't complain to Verizon because they allowed to prioritize their customers over those that lease access.

Just reading up on organic farming. In the US, there are over one meelion acres of organic farms! That's 0.5% of total farmed acreage in the US.
Yields. Piss poor. Organic yields for most important crops range from 30% to 64% less than conventional yields. In some cases, organic yields are higher than conventional. Sweet potatoes for instance.
Based on that, to achieve current production, we'd need 43% more farm land for all organic. That's about the size of Spain.
Oh, and by 2050, food demand is projected to increase by 70%.

I feel blessed to have come of age during that time. Kids today have no idea what they missed; it's also a reason I find the 'X Reacts to Classic Rock' videos fascinating as well as addicting. My work laptop needs an overhaul. HQ in NY is overnighting me a replacement. When it gets here, I'll probably spend 2 hours on the phone with IT getting it configured for myself, then have to run the other one down to the computer repair store.
Ah the joys of working from home. Been doing it for 6 years now, since long before the rona. With all this insomnia, I'm half-tempted to volunteer for the overnight shift, which is mainly returnng a few calls here and there that are taken by our service on the overnights but can't be answered by them. Problem is, once you're on midnights you can get trapped there forever, and I still have hope we'll find some way out of this mess eventually.

Excellent summary and totally agree, RickZ. Growing up as a young teen and then into college, I was right in the middle of it and now it is certainly the golden age.
And Jimi was exactly that influential. Who was influenced by Muddy Watters, Buddy Guy, Elmore James.

When it comes to the more rawk/blues guys, Robin Trower is just a magician of the Strat. His stuff holds up really well and he was still killin' it last time I saw him live about 8 years ago. Got to meet him briefly post-show and he was very polite and friendly with the fans.

Durham and Barr dragging their feet is such a let down, so I'm glad that that Trump has come out swinging. But they are really giving it their all to wear us down. I know it's getting to me. I just keep praying and praying and praying, because that's all I can do. The unfairness and gaslighting is too much to take. Both my daughters have turned to the left and it has caused our relationships to suffer greatly. What these people have put our country through the last 4 years is pure evil, and what they've done in the last 5 or 6 months is breathtaking. That they are willing to destroy so many lives, business and our Country to hold on to power and to save their asses is a site to behold.
