The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Organized sports is a positive influence on America's youth, not because of those at the pinnacle of those sports, but in spite of them. Working as part of a team, learning that one's limits are not immutable, the thrill of competition, the joy of winning, and the misery of losing; all of these are valuable.

Worship of entitled, overpaid, arrogant and out-of-touch professional athletes is not. Placing them at the pinnacle of the celebrity hierarchy has done nothing but harm. There are fewer than 4,000 professional athletes in the four major sports in America (I do not count European kickball as a major sport), so the probability of anyone rising to that level is vanishingly small, yet we have entire industries dedicated to the concept that with enough effort and money, anyone can do it.

And giving these monomaniacal athletes a voice in anything other than what sort of shoe is best for basketball or how to hit the inside pitch is a recipe for disaster. Very few of them took anything other than athletics seriously from a very young age; their studies were simply a trivial obstacle. These are men who probably can't read and write very well, who have very little grasp of history or economics (and judging by their bankruptcy rate they probably can't balance a checkbook!), yet their pontifications on a wide variety of important topics is taken seriously by a media devoid of critical thinking ability.

Worse than taking them seriously about matters in which they have no knowledge (most things besides their own sports), we have lost any perspective! These people are businessmen touting their own brands and industries. Protecting China from reasonable criticism of their business and social practices does nothing other than bolster the bottom line of their sports and their investments.

American Sports Are Letting Down America

Nearly 30 years ago, in a 1993 Nike commercial, professional basketball legend Charles Barkley fired the first shot at the “role model” concept popularized by Columbia University sociologist Robert K. Merton in the aftermath of the 1960s counterculture movement. “I am not a role model,” Barkley proclaimed in the half-minute spot. “I’m not paid to be a role model. I’m paid to wreak havoc on the basketball court. Parents should be role models. Just because I dunk a basketball doesn’t mean I should raise your kids.”
Barkley was correct then, and it has gotten much, much worse. Lebron James, whose fortune is partially based on Chinese slave labor, lectures America on how evil and racist it is...but "BUY MY SHOES!" His peers do the same, yet fly private jets across the world and are feted and treated like royalty wherever they go. When they are exposed to law enforcement it is most likely to be a 3:00am shooting outside of a club, beating the snot out of one of their girlfriends, or a drunk driving stop. And we are supposed to feel guilty that they are targeted by the police because of their color?

And perhaps worst of all, they have diminished the glory of sports by their sense of entitlement and their assumptions that they are in all ways superior. Some kid who idolizes one of the current crop of "superstars" and saves up to go to a game may discover when he arrives at the arena or stadium that his idol is taking the night off to rest. The message is clear: they are entitled to our money, but we are not entitled to an honest effort from them nor are we entitled to some respect for the effort that we put forth to make their lives so special.

The sad thing is that these athletes have a tremendous opportunity to do good. Imagine if they spoke as one and fought against the ghetto culture and lack of respect for human life that pervades so much of inner-city America? The dozen deaths they glorify are dwarfed by the thousands of innocents killed each year in the ghettos of America. Nobody knows those names; nobody is writing them on their helmets or jerseys; nobody cares. Because the shoes must be sold!

18 Nobody won that debate.

I think team Trump was caught off guard.

Team Biden's strategy was to move to the middle.

This the historical dem playbook.

I think team Trump thought Biden was going to play to his base as he had been up to that point.

Now the theory is that Trump won in that he forced Biden into saying things that alienate his base, but I think that's completely wrong for several reasons:

Trump didn't force him there. It was evident from every answer to every question that Biden was going moderate as a strategy. In fact, you had Trump insisting that Biden wouldn't even 'say' he supports LE while Biden was stating over and over that he does.

Furthermore, the Dem base will not be alienated by anything Biden says. Biden himself, just because he is Joe Biden, has already done all the alienating possible. The base is convinced that Biden will rubberstamp the leftist utopia.

Team Trump had two goals in this debate:
1. not to lose our base.
2. to expose Biden as a radical to the undecided.

They completely failed at 2.

The second debate, if we get there and the they don't institute rules to neuter Trump, will go much better.

36 Some athletes are role models. Not all - no more and maybe less than everyone in any industry are role models - but some. Alejandro Villanueva worked his ass off, went to war, served with valor, came home, and excelled in his craft. That's worth looking up to. Michael Jordan worked his ass off, dominated on the court, retired (several times - that's a demerit) and became an effective businessman. That's a good story, too.

But athletes in general - like other professions in general - are not. They work hard and commit to their craft, but that's true of elites in *every* industry and it implies no domain expertise or capability outside of their craft. Those who are actual role models have done more. No one gets to be a role model by default.

No, that goes to the stupid dumb schlubs who show up and drool. Paying their money, and essentially getting none of the honey.

47 18. I disagree regarding your conclusion about 2. Biden thinks this is 1996, and that he can pretend to not provide an answer to packing the court on some sort of nuance.

It is not 1996, and he will either answer the question in the affirmative (playing to his base), or not answer it at all, allowing Trump to pain a picture of 7 or so socialists added to the court. This is the position that Trump has placed Biden in, whether Biden knows it or not (or his team anyway). I believe that this single point will be the cudgel with which Biden will get whipped as a radical.

It's the sort of thing that only a very small percentage of people are even capable of doing, in a similar way that only a few percentage of people can become neurosurgeons.

The problem is that the market for neurosurgeons will always be there, but the market for guys who can do sports real good can suddenly disappear with a change in taste from the market itself.

These guys are super good at doing the very specialized work that they do, but it's a luxury good and easily dismissed by a lot of people with a large enough push. And then these athletes decided to start actively pushing.

70 Sports has been debased over the last few decades just like the rest of society.

I grew up playing sports so it became natural to watch the pros play the game at the highest level. I never thought of them as role models in any area other than the sport they were playing.

Now they are more celebrity than athlete and it's ruining professional sports. I don't care what movie stars or musicians or athletes think about the big issues of the day anymore than I care what my local bartender thinks. Less actually.

93 Wife and I were discussing this very thing last week. The over hyped, over produced over commercialized elements of not just sports, but more broadly entertainment have created a celebrity culture that has sucked all of the simple joy out of youth sports, music, you name it.

And while sucking the joy out of it, they set up the sure to be shattered dream of being in the "big leagues". How many urban kids have had their future prospects destroyed by saying, "Screw studying, I'm going to be in the NFL!".

94 I remember my brother talking about the physical level that professional athletes have to get to in order to operate in the pros.

The psalmist-among other places in Scripture- was not crazy about people they considered heathens) or as a reference to Martin Luther's anti semetism?

97 36 Some athletes are role models.

The ones you mentioned, Jordan and Villeneuve, both have something in common. A work ethic that goes beyond just showing up every day. They actually care about someone other than themselves.

So role models should be people who exhibit traits one wishes to emulate, or wishes for their children to emulate. For some parents, they want their kids to make a crap ton of money so that they (the parents) are supported in their old age. The money is all they care about, not how it's made or who is stepped on hurt along the way.

I wish more parents had taught their kids treat others as they would like to be treated, but apparently that is to Bible centered, and thus evil.

141 While I agree with everything said in the above Rant, I think it's prudent to recognize that it's exactly the arrogance and self narcissism that put them on the pedestal as champions. The same focus on self (physical) performance is a great deal of the problem when we suddenly realize "hey, they're great athletes but as human beings they suck!" In days gone by celebrity athletes had to acknowledge that they were stupid athletes and it was the adoration of the fans that produced ANY rewards for their accomplishments. Today it is the rare "Peyton Manning" that understand that the fans ARE the accomplishment of celebrity athletes. The signing bonuses, before a star actually accomplishes anything as a pro, as well as a media that lovingly puts microphones in their face, CAUSE a lot of the confusion on their part.

And then plenty who do.

Human history folds and refolds, and opens up again. I think we're not that far away from the disintegration of the American Experiment... and our children and grandchildren will suffer greatly for it.

In this age of TV consumers being able to stream without -- and/or record/playback/fast forward through -- commercials, the only way to get them to actually sit through commercials are live events like sports.

Formerly (don't know if still true now), the NFL provided the #1 TV show on five different networks: CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, and the NFL Network. Giving the middle finger to patriotic Americans should end well for their advertising revenues ... oh well, It's Always Sunny in Chy-na!

It should never go without saying that in the 70+ years that the CCP has controlled China, there has never been a black, a Hispanic, an Arab, a Muslim, a Jew (religious or ethnic), a Christian, a white, or a woman named to the top level of the CCP Politburo.

It is the absolute model for a racially pure, patriarchal government that systemically refuses to allow any minority representation inside of it's government.

In short, it's the embodiment of everything that LeBron James claims the American government is.

But he can't acknowledge this because tiny Chinese hands sew the sneakers he hocks to broke-dick, inner city minorities at outrageously inflated prices.

LeBron uses child labor to con broke minorities out of their single mothers cash stash.

It was great that most of these players were to some degree (hoping more than just for photo ops) interacting and helping normal people.

Now, it's PSAs for causes -- not tangibly helping them -- that are lectures. Lectures that are done from a studio, from social media, from the red carpet or after a game. No contact with people of some sort of need.

1/x Everyone agrees Tuesday's debate was a train wreck. A major contributing fact was the moderator Chris Wallace, a registered Democrat, repeatedly interrupting to try to help Joe Biden. The next debate is set to be moderated by a former intern to...Joe Biden. (And Ted Kennedy.)

2/x This is NUTS. And no Republican should allow this bias to continue in future elections.

I propose 2 simple, fair rules for future debates:

(1) GOP primary debates should be moderated by people who actually vote in a GOP primary. (Not Dem journalists who want GOP to lose.)

3/x And (2) General election debates should be moderated by an equal number of GOP and Dems.

We should stop pretending obvious bias doesn't exist. Instead, equalize & counter-balance it.

A debate moderated by, say Mark Levin & Chris Hayes would be better than fake impartiality.

4/x Or Rush Limbaugh & Rachel Maddow.

Or Ben Shapiro & Chris Cuomo.

Both sides would take incoming & the debates would be real and substantive.

He's explained why, and it has to do with wanting to be treated like a normal person. He says he welcomes people who want to come up to him (as long as he's not eating or otherwise occupied) and have a conversation, he just doesn't want to do the celebrity thing.

I suspect he considers it dehumanizing, to both himself and the sycophants who want to treat him like an idol.

Given the platform he has, I think he's able to make this stand without sounding like a jerk. Which he most decidedly is not.

Pro athletes going bankrupt has always been a big red flag to me. It definitely means that these are people who are not being educated at all. I understand that athletes and actors are basically the only people who can get super-rich without being smart.

But even if your really dumb, you should have enough education and life experience by the age of eighteen to NOT SPEND ALL THAT MONEY.

The ones who get paid millions of $$$ and spend it all and end up bankrupt have failed to intellectually develop beyond the maturity of a 10 year old. And that's on their parents and teachers. I honestly feel sorry for those guys.

Let's play this out....

1) Rittenhouse went to Kenosha to stop looting and arson.

2) He drew the ire of the "mostly peaceful protestors" by putting out the fires they were starting.

3) This led to a number of antifa members attacking him, and him shooting them.

So if "white supremacists" are the ones behind the arson and looting and Rittenhouse is a white supremacist how did he end up shooting white antifa members?

Recently, some little noodle armed antifa soyboy was going around "fishing for cops" with a fishing pole and a donut on the line. He'd wave it in front of cops, going "piggy hungry? piggy wanna eat?" as his friend recorded him.

In a kinder, gentler time, he'd have had a wood shampoo the first cop he did that to. These children have no idea. I think it's far past time to teach them.

I'm fine with cops leaving us the hell alone, and I'm fine with them clubbing your teeth out if you taunt them. It's the natural order of things.

302 I've been reading about the Iguala mass murder in Mexico recently.

There are still a lot of unknowns, but basically the local politicians and police, possibly working with a drug gang, decided to kill 43 students and did so.

And it took years at the federal level in Mexico to even get someone to look into it.

This is what out of control, murdering cops look like. I couldn't imagine random Mexican citizens responding to actual violence like this by throwing sh*t (literally) at the cops that killed those people because they would "disappear" immediately thereafter as well.

His 1991 season was an embarrassment of purposely throwing balls away and pouting the entire season when he wasn't sitting due to "injuries"

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt now because he was a young immature brat back then, but his forcing the trade set the Brewers even further back than because he was to be the cornerstone of the franchise.

the earpiece is not wired, and is tiny, deeper in the ear. A close inspection (I assume) would have found it, Joe didn't get that. It is not like the big earpiece from that earlier picture of Joe which Ace mentioned a few days ago.

There is other video of a piece that pops up from under his shirt collar ... Tore of ShadowGate fame says this is an old tech device, a type thing she has used in her more covert days (I guess she is a real source/asset type, not fully sure) ... it is certainly possible/likely that they were able to talk to Joe. 417 Hevel Varik's nick may be unusual, as Fenelon noted, but I find that his original comments on the debate mirror my own. No one I know personally who watched any of it, and most all of them are strong conservatives, would say that Trump "won". Of course neither did Biden, and everyone today hates Chris Wallace, even though everyone on Fox has been ordered to say nothing about the botch he made of the entire event.

What Trump did well was to neutralize all the plans of Biden and the event organizers to give Biden some big soundbites they could use in ads, like his Weeping Father Love Letter to Beau, which Trump broke up wonderfully. But Trump was forced into spending the night as Heckler in Chief, and little more, which really was not a great look.

The only good part is that very few people watched it - ratings disaster compared to 2016 - and thus no ones mind was changed either way by it. It was a colossal waste of time and effort for everyone involved. Perhaps, if the Telemundo poll is correct, Trump did himself some good with hispanic voters.

He was saying he'd like to see all us Trump supporters lined up against a wall, while he gave color commentary.

Too bad Skippy doesn't know his history. Once the glorious revolution is at hand, he'll be giving commentary alright. Until he gets bashed in the mouth with a rifle butt and lined along the ditch with the rest of the no-longer-useful tools. Sure don't need all these media people and celebrities. One station is plenty, and one or two people reading the prepared statements is fine.

470 417 Hevel Varik's nick may be unusual, as Fenelon noted, but I find that his original comments on the debate mirror my own.

Posted by: Tom Servo at October 01, 2020 11:53 AM (Kpl3J)

Agree with everything you said. But during the month of September Trump did, what, 20 rallies and several press conferences? Biden hid in his basement, made a couple of appearances, and took more than 10 days off for "debate prep." He probably altered his sleep cycle and meds just to get through it. The first debate was an enormous investment for the Biden campaign, while for the Trump campaign it was a little distraction. So neutralizing Biden in the debate basically meant the Biden campaign has to start over with a month to go before the election and a miserable ground game. It was a strategic victory for Trump.

Glavine was frustrating as hell to watch, because he NEVER threw the ball down the center of the plate, and Maddux could make a baseball dance like no one before or since.

Neither of them were big strikeout pitchers. They made hitters swing at THEIR pitches, and are rightly considered a couple of the best pitches of the modern era.

Sheffield also was a pretty poor fielder if I recall. Your question about why he's not in the HOF led me to an article by someone who makes an interesting point: since they're only allowed to vote for 10 players on a ballot, the PEDs issue has resulted in people like Bonds and Clemens NOT already in the HOF -- so then writers who still want to vote for them each year now can only choose another 7 or 8 dudes.
Basically, they're stealing two slots each (by not already being in the HOF), something he says has led to "ballot stacking."

492 I was never athletic or competitive growing up. Not on an organized level. I suck at all sports. Unorganized the best thing was my parents bought us boxing gloves. Learned to take a punch how to fight back. 4 boys we beat each other. I never really learned anything about pushing physical limits until boot camp (navy, remember I'm not a athlete)

I've learned more being chronically ill about my limits and my character than sports ever taught me.

There are no debates of any kind that are edifying or exchanges of reasoned views anymore. The National Debate Society has given prizes to horrific rap performances by students.

US presidential debates were not too important historically, with a couple exceptions, until the second half of the 20th century, with the rise of ubiquitous TV. Today, they are just soundbite generators, farming for gotchas and gaffes. They mainly create income for TV networks and talking-head pundits.

509 Agree with everything you said.
Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at October 01, 2020 11:59 AM (jK8Z7)

This is a great point.

If Biden is going to have another debate on the 15th, he's going to have to go through the same routine to prepare. If there's a third debate, same again.

All that time 'preparing' is time that he's not out campaigning, and with Kamala 'preparing' as well, there are no live events with the two of them, with less than 35 days to go.

Biden turning in a decent (not winning) performance on Tuesday may be the worst thing to happen to the campaign.

There's a concept, and I don't know how true it really was, that umps would start giving pitchers outside the corners, if the catcher set up there, and the pitcher kept hitting it.

I think the effect was not as common as people think.

Basically, hitting is a dumb skill. I don't mean that as an insult, just that it's a muscle memory thing, and requires almost no actual thinking. If you are thinking, the ball is going to pass you by before you know it.

Trump got Biden to admit some things (does not support green new deal, contrary to his campaign site) ... and got him to openly NOT admit to some things (would he pack the court, Joe would not say ... gee, what good does that do the public, to not know?)

Trump also exposed Hunter, and Joe's only response was to mutter "all debunked" ... aka "who you gonna believe, me or your own lying eyes" ... and all the facts in evidence.

Who was in the control room whispering in Wallace's ear, on when to cut off Trump when he was scoring points? It was a team effort against Trump ... he defeated them all. (is Wallace's middle name really Tarzan, wife's middle name Jane? ... must just be a meme)

Posted by: ShainS at October 01, 2020 12:00 PM (WqPYg)

Yeah, I think that's true.

People, including Bill James, have written books on how convoluted and arbitrary Hall of Fame voting has been, essentially forever.

There are travesties of injustice all up and down the place.

As my interest in the current iteration of the sport has waned to almost nothing, I'm finding my interest in its history is fading too. Not gone, but fading.

So things like Hall of Fame injustice, which has never really bothered me all that much anyway, these days I care even less.

There is a funny video from a few years ago when they played a prank on Kris Bryant of the Cubs. He was taking batting practice in Spring Training and had the regular guy who threw BP called away. Greg Maddux was dressed up in a wig and beard as pretending to be the sound man as they filmed Bryant taking BP. Maddux steps in to throw and at one point Bryant says, "This sound guy has a good curve ball." Maddux is giving him crap the whole time. "That was a strike." Bryant, Yeah I know.

You want athletes to look up to, try Ted Williams, who stopped his career to fight actual Nazis. These pampered pricks are embracing the new Nazis in China.

Posted by: Wyatt Earp at October 01, 2020 11:07 AM

Didn't fight NAZIs, but for SA Spurs center David Robinson served in the military. Can't imagine anyone in today's NBA doing the same.

Robinson is widely considered to be the best basketball player in Naval Academy history. [ ... ] Upon graduation, he became eligible for the 1987 NBA draft and was selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the first overall pick; however, the Spurs had to wait two years because he had to fulfill his active-duty obligation with the Navy.

Robinson considered leaving the academy after his second year, before incurring an obligation to serve on active duty. He decided to stay after discussing with the Superintendent the likelihood that his height would prevent him from serving at sea as an unrestricted line officer, which would be detrimental to his naval career, and might make it impossible for him to receive a commission at all. As a compromise, Secretary of the Navy John Lehman allowed Robinson to train for and receive a commission as a staff officer in the Civil Engineer Corps. As a result, Robinson was commissioned in the Naval Reserve and was only required to serve an initial active-duty obligation of two years. After graduating from the Naval Academy, Robinson became a civil engineering officer at the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia. He was regularly featured in recruiting materials for the service. Despite the nickname "Admiral", Robinson's actual rank upon fulfilling his service commitment was Lieutenant (junior grade).

Unfortunately, we did not see the real Biden.

team Trump should have been prepared to prove that team Biden does not, in fact, support LE.

All Trump did was say over and over again that Biden won't 'say' he does (implying to me that they expected that he wouldn't) while Biden was simultaneously saying that he does.

They should have a had a notebook of soundbites proving that he was lying.

Trump sort of did this with the 100 trillion comeback to Biden's 20 billion claim, but had nothing at all to respond to Biden's very predictable 'we'll break all the windows and make many JOBS claim'

Trump let them get away with labeling Critical Race Theory indoctrination as 'racial sensitivity training' where it would have been easy to pick out 2 or 3 soundbites to frame it for what it really was.

The Biden son money Russia thing was okay but I have feeling undecideds simply don't care about it. But Trump wasn't able to inject the right soundbites to 'prove' to the watchers that Joe was lying through his teeth (though to be fair it would have been very hard to predict that Joe wouldn't simply claim it all never happened)

The best thing Trump did in the debate is fail to fall for their attempt to get him to concede a stolen election preemptively.

In 1987, as the Cards had just won the pennant, I was standing among the mob gathered outside of Booosh Stadium, as players and media types came out. We razzed some of the Giants players, even spooked little Bobbi Kostas, but it made me sad when Stan the Man came up, among that crowd, having to wade through it to get to his awaiting vehicle, the look of fear on his face was real.

Fans suck.

One of the things that has been obvious about Trump throughout his entire public life is that he's a Counterpuncher. He always gives back what he gets, hard. I think at times that trait has left him susceptible to people willing to butter him up a lot (like Michael Cohen) But it also means that whenever someone attacks him, he instinctively swings back twice as hard.

I was at the dentist yesterday morning and a couple of hygienists were chatting about it and how awful it was.

Get this. They were appalled by Biden telling POTUS to shut up and by his being so nasty. He was "no nicer than Trump" and "if anything worse."

I'd guess the women's ages to be circa 30 and 45, i.e., too young to know the Biden of the Bork and C Thomas inquisitions. Perhaps they believed he was "good ol' Joe" and would bring civility back. Not now.

I'll be the first to admit, low info voters (or people that cut hair) wouldn't fully understand what they saw. A lot saw a poor old man trying to be "all presidential" while another bully was screaming at him.

But, those people are far and few between. They could also be easily swayed back with a few minutes of conversation. Every time we talk to one of these types (who seem otherwise rational) it's our duty to talk them down. I'd bet that barber would have said "oh yeah".

They're being swayed by friends, family and what CNN tells them. One nugget of TRUTH can go a long, long way. And in turn, they might just get a few others to have that epiphany as well.

The world is an ugly, scary place. If the debate stage is too much for Joe to handle, WTF is he going to do when the ChiComs are threatening Taiwan?

But they only have to be right occasionally ... to be really good. But I'd guess yeah, once the pitch leaves the hand, it is mostly reflex.

Sports has been debased over the last few decades just like the rest of society.

Just shut up and play.

Posted by: JackStraw at October 01, 2020 11:11 AM

Sports became debased with the advent of ESPN. Sept 7, 1979. Entertainment & Sports Programming Network.

Gradually over the past 41 years, they pushed professional sports to be more "entertainment" than actual sports.

We used to have athletes like Barry Sanders who just tossed the ball to the ref after scoring a TD and acted like he'd been there before.

ESPN pushed everyone from college to professional sports to start celebrating and dancing and choreographing celebrations for everything from TDs to simple first downs or tackles or sacks.
