For the funny little end-bit of the video: in Connecticut, Senator Richard "Dick" Blumenthal had a reputation as a relentless news-camera hound during the 20 years when he was the State AG. This is what the old gent is referring to.

9 Sorry to thread hop in comments but this thought was important.....to me. Sucks to be busy and look back to find I missed a GREAT thread topic - "cafe hayek" and are we "better off" now than 50 years ago. Anyone who answers that you're just a myopic fool for not shouting a resounding YES! (as claimed in the article - and by many here) is likely either at least 60 years old or not currently raising a teenager. It is an absolute horror show trying to balance allowing access to technology and ideas while protecting from the diseases of the mind at their fingertips. And no, each generation does not share the "same" parenting difficulties in severity just different in kind - not even close. And all my parent friends echo this. I would give anything to allow my children (10, 14 and 15) the wonder of experiencing the joy and innocent freedom of their respective ages in 1970 - 1980. My oldest, a wonderful artistic athletic and otherwise self-assured intelligent girl -is enduring anxiety issues from social media pressures and is now on meds. "All her friends" she says are vocally anti-Trump and vocally smear embarrass and ridicule anyone who doesn't agree. Everything with latter teens is hyper sexualized nonstop in a way never imagined 50 years ago. She is trying to be an open-minded conservative girl and in this Idiocracy world for kids, it's impossible. The claim that smart phones, internet, technology are a patent blessing to be celebrated as a wonderful "improvement" is dead wrong. Again, I probably should have kept this to myself having missed the thread but it is just too real and raw for many of us parents who long for the truly "good ol days" - not perfect, not without struggle, but certainly not this hellscape. 57 My daughter texted me almost the same thing this week. I had asked what the school situation was and she said our granddaughter was so glad to not have to go back to school. I was curious because my granddaughter is very social but ultimately very shy.
Our daughter said there was less peer pressure on her and less social pressure on her with home schooling. She was doing great with the home school and just going to her part time job. She will probably continue home schooling after all this mess is done.

So I sort of say different things here at different times to try to not make it too obvious who I actually am and where I live haha

but I have a 17 year old daughter (actually!) and a 15 year old son

and I know EXACTLY what you are saying

we are lucky to have a cabin way way up in nowheresville PA where I swear it's like things used to be there. we go up a lot of weekends, especially during all the covid nonsense we went up a lot, just for the normalcy.

they have friends there and the kids get on their bikes and I barely see them except to eat / sleep! there's no cell service there and we don't have a dish on our cabin so it's heaven - no wifi no TV no phones. HEAVEN. a reset.

the social contagion; the lack of in-person peer interaction; the conformity!!!!! being a teen right now is absolutely a hellscape. and we pay a WHOLE LOT for them to go to religious private schools which does help but still things are God-awful out there.

they would be the first to say they wish they'd been kids in the 80s!!! the kids watch Stranger Things and they all go "is that really what it was like??!!"

what's happening to our children right now is BY DESIGN. just remember that. powerful people have put us here, on purpose, to harm and weaken us.

so what I do is I take them out of it as much as possible, and I teach them to FIGHT.

next year - college - not super looking forward to that at all. that will be a fight for my eldest and we won't be there to help. hopefully she is strong enough.

Tell her what I told my kids - like finds like. The good kids find each other, although it may take a little time. Encourage her to go to church in your denomination and talk to those kids, for a start. I remember seeing kids at the college Masses who I would then see around campus. My kids are conservative and most of their college friends are not, but their friends are conservative in their actions and I think their politics are mostly just the result of years of brainwashing, to be honest.

And they don't talk politics - they just concentrate on things they have in common. And some of their friends are actually conservative, too.

Dang, had to work, missed the food thread. Anywho, I'm doing prep work w/ tomatoes for making sauce/paste tomorrow. Too much to do the whole process after work when I was doing outside physical work. But I'm getting a start on it.

Did one batch by first cooking them down. Forgot our food mill fell apart. I think I blended it at the end and we've got some nice sauce frozen.

Next batch I blended before cooking and then after, came out more like a paste. I just added onion, garlic, sugar and olive oil. Any other suggestions? I just wanted a tomato base for the future that I could adjust accordingly later when cooking.

For years I just tossed cut up tomatoes in a pot and cooked until soft. Ran them through a food mill and back into a pot to cook down a little more. Salt and pepper and into Ball jars with new lids. Turn them over until they cool and they'll last forever without refrigeration. Makes great tomato juice and you can always add garlic and what you like for spaghetti sauce.

180 Was out on the Connecticut River today, as far down as the Trump Boat Parade was ending, but several hours earlier. Looked like a good crowd of a 1000 or so people on either bank around the Goodspeed Opera House several hours ahead of time, and saw one news report that there were up to 1000 boats involved.

(That spot is about 10 miles from where the parade started and Coast Guard approved a float plan that involved the parade traveling only at no wake speed, so we weren't going to stick around for 3 or 4 hours.)
Only found that one report online so far, and heard third hand that the actual number of boats was much smaller, closer to 150 or so, but haven't been able to dig out any footage.
We did see one small boat further up the river with 4 people all wearing masks. I assume that was the Biden parade.
