I like these Low Country still life paintings. This one is not as brilliant for color or lush but it is a beautifully done simple scene done with the same skill I admire. The simple colors, the detail (except for whatever the hell is in the bowl) and the clean lines make for a relaxed painting that could fit in many rooms. Pleasant and effective.

Polliwog, These would be clay pipes, commonly available at a tavern. The bowls are smaller because tobacco was not as available in Holland compared to England. The small brass box contains the tobacco, initially imported from Borneo or Madagascar, later on from diverse platforms. The small pewter roundish container on the table contains a hot coal of anthracite. This would smolder for hours, serving as a pocket lighter, warmer, or heater for branding tools to punish insolent slaves. The bowl contains the first season growth of fermented dwarf jizz, generally infused with churches and lead. Small bits could be broken off and nibbled but due to its extreme gastric irritating qualities it was more likely to be poop shooted or inserted into small pouches cut into the skin. More advanced practitioners would occasionally inject it into the eyeball, a difficult undertaking in this day and age when hypodermic syringes and needles were made of oxen penis and thorns from the giant apoplexy tree... .. "I wonder if the pipes are meershaum. If so, they are practically new. The bowls seem really small as well, not like the English pipes I'm used to seeing."
Polliwog, These would be clay pipes, commonly available at a tavern. The bowls are smaller because tobacco was not as available in Holland compared to England. Also, the tobacco back then would have been a slow smoke. The larger bowls were more common in the colonies. Posted by: JTB Iirc, tavern pipes were to be "borrowed" while at the tavern. When a new person borrowed it, the would break off the "used" tip from the previous person. That's why they were made from clay. Posted by: rickb223 at October 05, 2020 10:05 AM (fu1JC) 136

BTW, those long stem clay pipes make for a very smooth, tasty smoke. The stem lets the smoke cool a bit and clay absorbs the tars allowing for the tobacco flavor to come through. By their shape and features, those pipes can only be smoked in a relaxed fashion suitable for a nice time.

And from the British Antiques Roadshow I know Japanese pipes had very, very tiny bowls because they'd just take the two or three puffs at a time of a couple of pinches of tobacco and put it away so these are mistakenly thought by Westerners to have been opium pipes. . . . Posted by: andycanuck at October 05, 2020 * * Agreed about Brett. However, "meerschaum" is a mineral, and the term "meerschaum pipe" is usually applied to one where the bowl is made out of meerschaum. The big "S-shaped" one is called a calabash: the bowl is meerschaum, but the body into which the bowl fits is made from a calabash, a gourd. You're right, Holmes is usually shown in the original illustrations with a briar or a clay pipe. He did smoke a cigarette in one scene in the first novel, and I think one episode of the Brett series showed that. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at October 05, 2020 10:20 AM (BeVEe) 196

Posted by: andycanuck at October 05, 2020 * * I think the word "meerschaum" is Dutch. It's supposed to mean "sea foam" -- I guess because the mineral is white when the pipe is new. It turns a lovely yellow-brown over time as you smoke it. The calabash is a good pipe because it allows the smoke to really cool before it gets to your mouth. Just FYI:
The usual Sherlock Holmes pipe is a calabash. It's a shaped gourd with a meerschaum bowl to hold the tobacco. They are meant to be held in the hand since they are difficult to hold between clenched teeth. Meerschaum is a mineral that can be easily carved into a smoking pipe shape, traditionally paired with an amber mouthpiece. (Think Lee Van Cleef in the Sergio Leone westerns.) They are rather fragile but provide a great smoke. Them material is white but will darken to dark gold and brown with use as it absorbs oils from your hand and smoke. The clay pipes were VERY inexpensive to make and provide a nice smoke. They are rather thin so can't be held by the bowl, only the stem. Posted by: JTB at October 05, 2020 10:31 AM (7EjX1) 240

Nope. Meerschaum is the clay used to make the pipe. Smokes cooler. A calabash is a big s-shaped one. Posted by: pep at October 05, 2020 10:17 AM (v16oJ) Meerschaum is the mineral Sepiolite, which is a magnesium silicate clay mineral. Pipes made from it were often ornately carved. As far as malicious computer hacking is concerned, the most recent breach of security at Iran's nuclear facilities may not be very serious... unless you hate the music of Australian rock band AC/DC. It has been alleged that unidentified computer hackers have forced workers at two of the country's controversial nuclear facilities to endure AC/DC's hit song Thunderstruck repeatedly - and at full volume - sometimes in the middle of the night. Of course, there has been no confirmation of the attack from Iran - the evidence stems from a series of e-mails purporting to be from the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran. Windows security updates should always be taken seriously, of that there is no doubt. But when the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issues an emergency directive for a perfect 10, critical, Windows Server vulnerability, the urgency meter goes off the scale.
This is a vulnerability that could enable an attacker with network access to gain admin status by sending a string of zeros using the Windows Netlogon protocol. A vulnerability that, CISA said, must be assumed as being actively exploited in the wild. Posted by: SMOD at October 05, 2020 10:46 AM (3aI0K) 293

No, this isn't right. I *guarantee* you that you have met - and probably even personally known - Republicans. But you see, your lunatic fringe controls the public communications space, and has all the advantages and so your shrill vocal dominance means that you have destroyed the ability of discourse to reflect the society in which you are embedded. Rather than trying to get the cops to kick all those Republicans out, I strongly recommend that you put on your shoes, go outside, and try talking to one or two of them. It's a Republican-dominated event, so you're not going to get beaten up or set on fire. Instead of panicking in your false safe space, try doing what the Left always claims it is doing. Company is migrating to Office 365. The training is ridiculous. I want to send a document for Patty to review. Let's start with a smiley face emoji and "Good morning Patty!" After she replies, send "can you please help me with this document." We're asking for her to help which is imposing on her time and sort of demanding, so let's add an emoji, or better yet this really cute cat gif to soften the aggressive help request" Wow. Robert - How about a status report?
------------- Howdy Mike! I'm doin fine, thanks. The CT scan I had a couple of weeks ago showed the tumor sizes down 30% after 5 chemo treatments, so it's heading in the right direction. Side effects are still minimal, so I been lucky there. I see on WLOS web page that there's been people shooting at houses and cars in the 200 block of Deaverview Road. Imagine my shock at reading this, as I have been assured that the denizens of this area are completely peaceful and would never resort to violence.
