Trump Announces Peace Deal Between Bahrain and Israel, Too
I've mentioned before: the two coalitions fighting in the Middle East is are Iran and Turkey and Qatar (and Syria) on one side, and Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States of Bahrain and UAE, plus Israel, on the other side.
When the leftist propaganda media attempts to split the US from Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States, and Israel -- no matter what you might think of them -- they're doing that because Obama had decided that the US should back the terrorist theocracy of Iran. The media pumps out negative information ops against Saudi Arabia and covers up for Iran because they're trying to deliver the Middle East to Iran. Because Obama likes the terrorist theocracy of Iran. He thinks they'd be good stewards of the Middle East. Now, while this has been true for years, it has been true covertly. It's been an open secret -- but still a secret. Now comes the breakthrough of the Gulf States openly declaring peace and normalization of economic relations with Israel.President Trump on Friday announced that Bahrain has agreed to normalize relations with Israel, another diplomatic win for the president coming after a similar agreement with the United Arab Emirates just last month.Can we really deny Trump that Nobel Peace Prize? He was already nominated for facilitating an end to hostilities between Serbia and Kosovo; now he can add the UAE/Israel peace treaty and the Bahrain/Israel peace treaty. In a country wracked by civil unrest, wildfire, divisive politics, declining race relations and constantly increasing class tensions, the Trump administration has something to celebrate: a series of important peace deals between Israel and her Arab neighbors.
Despite the rhetoric from the Trump administration and associated publicity stunts like his nomination for a Nobel Peace Prize, however, these developments are modest developments and caution is warranted.
The dream of most Western leaders since the 1970s has been to bring peace to the Middle East. This was started in stunning fashion during the Carter administration. Mr. Carter, after seeing the failure of his comprehensive Middle East peace plan, brokered a deal between Israel and Egypt. Rightly heralded as the dawn of a new diplomatic era, the impartial solution still resulted in another 40 years of periodic and sometimes brutal violence between Israel and her neighbors.
Every subsequent president learned from the Carter experience and sought all-or-nothing Middle East peace deals. Mr. Trump's strategy of piecemeal negotiation is a tremendous step backwards in Middle East policy. His administration's continued failure to negotiate and encourage a pan-regional peace agreement will ultimately result in more of the same: intermittent bloody conflict.
Additionally, Mr. Trump's bifurcated negotiation strategy lessens the United States' standing internationally. His inability to negotiate regional peace will be interpreted by certain other belligerent or rival powers as a sign of weakness and inability to manage large-scale deals. These deals are riding a wave of regional political realignment that began of the involved states' own volition as far back as early in the Obama administration. These new developments were going to happen anyway thanks to those realigning priorities. Mr. Trump is taking credit where credit is not due. The credit for these inadequate developments, much as there is to celebrate, belongs with the parties involved in the agreement. Mr. Trump rode the coattails of sweeping regional developments rather than pursuing the more difficult path of brokering overall regional peace.
This is nonetheless a good development and more peace is better than less. But the Trump administration's gloating and unearned credit for the progress of this development is a cynical play by this administration to distract from the catastrophic degradation of the domestic situation during his term.

What's happening is a lot more serious than economic concerns. In a big way, it was caused by Obama and John Kerry; when they went all out of Iran, ending up with them blessing the Iranian Nuclear plans and handing over pallets of cash, they scared the hell out of the Saudi's and their allies. The Iranian Shiites have been telling the Saudi Royals that they want to kill them all and take over Mecca for themselves for centuries, and suddenly the Saudi Royals realized they might be able to do it.
Under Obama, the US proved it was no longer a reliable military supporter of the regime - we might even come down on the other side in the looming Sunni-Shiite war Iran has been threatening. So, what is the only other military in the region that is powerful, independent, and can be trusted to keep it's agreements? Israel, of course. When survival is at stake and you need a kickass bodyguard, you don't care about his religion, you want the best.
the de-facto military alliance between the Saudi's and the Israeli's began about 3 years ago. It was slow, because the Saudi's feared a backlash, but the Palestinians really blew it when they accepted Iranian money and started to praise the Ayatollahs. That pissed off the Gulf States to no end, and that's when they cut the Pali's off from any future aid, and also when they quit giving a shit about whatever happened to them.
This is now just the final development in what's been happening in the region ever since Trump took office - the development of a very strong Anti-Iranian alliance between the Israeli's, Egypt, and the Gulf States. Credit Jared Kushner for pushing to get them to finally go public with the final touches.

The Jewish vote was trending Republican until 2016 when it suddenly whipped back to where it had been a couple of cycles before. From something like 35-65 to 25-65 (a lot of third party votes, I believe, in 2016).
I doubt that 35% of the Jewish vote that voted for Romney are all that progressive and would be open to coming back to the Republican Party in 2020.

Turkey has been playing it's own games. It's proxies were fighting the Saudi proxies in Syria, and supporting the Iranians at times. But also opposing them at times; this is one of the problems with a war (Syria) where you had 4 or 5 major powers all at war with each other, all trying to dominate the others, and all changing their alliances daily. One of the best moves Trump ever made was to say "screw this, we're out of here."

Sorry, gotta disagree. Reagan polished off the USSR with Star Wars, but the USSR was on the ropes before that. Plus Reagan got played bigly on immigration amnesty, and whiffed badly on the Beirut bombing.
Trump has reversed the leftward slide of the country, is cutting down on illegal immigration (and getting Mexico to help!), is normalizing relations with North Korea, has brokered deals with Serbia/Kosovo, and Bahrain/Israel and UAE/Israel, put the economy back on a strong footing, has held China's feet to the fire, shitcanned the TPP and NAFTA, I mean, WOW. I saw an interview with him, Mr. Coates, not too long ago. I figured he'd be a strident prick, and it turns out he's kinda not. I mean, he's a race obsessed lefty, but he seemed to have a sense of humor, and didn't really seem to hate whitey.
So for what it's worth (I haven't read his book), I think maybe he's not as bad as the people who use him as their "intellectual" property. And I would suspect at this point, he's kinda not free to escape where they're holding him.

I do have fond memories of the Ambassador Hotel there.
Flew in one time and found out one of my old Shipmates and drinking buddies was running the Transfer Personnel Unit there, suddenly the ENLISTED Barracks was full, so 10 of us got rooms there for the 9 days while we waited for our ship to pull in.
Officers with us were PISSED, because there was plenty of room for them to stay on base.

I can't remember who it was, but I think it was Instapundit who was aghast that his 6 or 7 year old Mazda RX-7 was on the clunker list.
The media of course never once mentioned the downside of this debacle, it was all fawning over the lightbringer. I have to wonder who's pockets were lined on this one, besides Chevrolet and Chrysler. It was brilliant in how much damage it caused downstream though.

I don't do it either and think it serves no purpose at all. But if people want to do it to get fired up, I don't get in the way. You want my real opinion? He is Ronaldus Magnus for a reason. But even Reagan never faced domestic opposition like this. Sure 1979 was difficult, but the nation was another place. it is like trying to teach people about the US during the Civil War. Even the the union supporting North was a different country than we have today. It was nothing like the country today.

He had no problem going to the mattresses during the primary. The problem was, he wanted to have it handed to him in the general election on a silver platter, with a chorus of angels and rose petals on the ground ahead of him.

I agree they're drip-dripping it, but as I wrote upthread, I think it's because the Saudi's are very cautious, and they wanted to guarantee that there wasn't going to be any popular backlash in their countries before they jumped in and signed, too. Bahrain is very close to the Saudi Government, them signing means it won't be much longer now.

Kaepernick started his shit. It was up to his '9ers management and authorities in the league to give him his comeuppance. They didn't. They supported his message. So did others around the league, and sponsors like Nike followed suit.
So at that point, I could only say "well, the Broncos' management can stand in defiance of this, and maintain discipline, and refuse to kowtow to the Communists, or I'll quit watching them as I've done for so very long."
And they didn't. They let Brandon Marshall kneel in week 1. They hadn't punished him for his insolence by week 2. And I never watched an NFL ball game again.

I am not so sure we do. I think most took my post as saying Trump has not reached Reagan levels to date. I love Ronald Reagan and even saw him lying in state.
I did bounce around with that post and even threw in some Civil War stuff. I did say they are dealing with different times, and that is the case. But I think I was clear that Trump has not supplanted Reagan. I hope he does some day as we need a lot more wining .

I agree they're drip-dripping it, but as I wrote upthread, I think it's because the Saudi's are very cautious, and they wanted to guarantee that there wasn't going to be any popular backlash in their countries before they jumped in and signed, too. Bahrain is very close to the Saudi Government, them signing means it won't be much longer now.

I like Pence. He is a very serious guy and he did right by Trump when he needed some stalwart like him. There is a video on Cspan of Pence touring Gettysburg when they campaigned in that area in 2016. It is just Pence and his daughter with a guide. You could tell the guy was very serious about America. We could do a lot worse than him.
He might not want to do it in four years and like some have said he might not have the fire, but I respect the guy. I know a few here don't like him over regional politics, but trust me, that is always the way. Many Repubs have gripes about guys that ran their region whether as governors or in some other capacity.

Yeah there are basically three factions in the Middle East:
Israel
Saudi Arabia
Iran
All of the smaller nations in the area are aligned with one of these; Israel being solo. When one of the big ones goes for something, the others go along.
President Trump has had good relations with the Saudi princes for a long time now. He uses them as a sort of super bank for big investments, and has been bailed out once or twice by them. Like they said with Nixon going to China... probably President Trump is the only one who could realistically pull this off, since he's on good terms with both Israeli and Saudi governments.
