Heade Thunderstorm.jpg

Thunderstorm On Narragansett Bay
Martin Johnson Heade

My original plan for this morning was a meticulously painted watercolor by an 20th century American artist named John Stuart Ingle. Titled "Still Life With Watermelon," it was tremendously pleasing and interesting, but because of the oddities of copyright law I was unable to find a large enough version.

So who has lost out? Undoubtedly the artist's heirs, who because of their short-term greed have prevented the readership of a smart military blog from learning about an interesting but not-very-well-known American artist. Perhaps a few of you would have been intrigued by his work and bought prints or perhaps an original, but we will never know!

How does preventing AoSHQ from using his work for non-commercial purposes serve anyone? I am puzzled.

There's an apocryphal story about George V at an exhibit of an artist who specialized in rain-lashed landscapes. When the king was introduced to the painter, he said, "pity you always had such awful weather when you painted."

I like the story of his valet coming in one morning and asking, "Did Your Majesty see the story in the Times ? Some damned fool paid a thousand pounds for a stamp."

To which the king, a noted collector, said, "I was that damned fool."

68 Been there, done that. I grew up by Narragansett Bay so that sky is familiar. I suspect the painting has darkened with age or smoke since the sky rarely got that black. I like the way the sunlight, slanting under the approaching clouds and how that highlights the white sails and land in the foreground. He even got the calm water, showing reflections, which is typical until the front gets there and the wind roils the waves.

Check out the Wiki page for Martin Johnson Heade. I'm not a fan of his portraits for the most part but his landscapes, florals, and bird paintings are outstanding.

Embrace the storm.

101 Those copyright issues remind me of the old arguments I have for putting things on tape back in the day.

My thing was I would listen to different songs I taped from various sources...but more often than not, I'd still want the album, so I could get all the songs, and the artwork associated with it. So in a sense, taping songs off the radio or from friends actually benefitted the artist's bottom line.

Just as an digitally accessible version of the artwork would help the artist's cuse for the reason you outlined here.

T2 seemed to lose all the vibrant stuff that made the first film go, and went with special effects and a bratty kid. This junior juvenile delinquent is going to be the savior of humanity vs. Skynet? Don't think so.

T1 had great lines.

A kid tips his ice cream cone into Sarah's apron at work. As she discovers it, her coworker says philosophically, "Look at it this way. In a hundred years, who's gonna care?" (The gag being that everything about Sarah Connor's last day before the Terminator arrived will be of historical interest.)

Paul Winfield and Lance Henriksen, the cops, are talking at the police station. Winfield is preparing a cup of coffee. Henriksen mutters under his breath, "That coffee's two hours old." Winfield doesn't hear and keeps talking. Henriksen, again under his breath: "I put a cigarette out in it just now."

Again Winfield pays no attention; but a line or two later, after sipping from the coffee, he asks Henriksen, "Gimme a cigarette."

170 Some years ago, I had a rare and unique opportunity to walk the woods behind the house I grew up in with my acrfoss-the-street buddy from those days (sadly since deceased.)

We decided to find our old fort that we built when we were 10 and maintained and improved till we were about 16 and cars and girls took over our lives.

The big double-trunked tree that had served as it's backdrop had been hit by loghtning at some point over the years and just shattered all over the place, pretty thoroughly destroying any trace of our old childhood fort. We did find some nails and scraps of wood, and a padlock, though we suspect the padlock was from a later generation of kids who took over our fort.

I'll agree that there was more story to be told after the end of T1, the preparation for the "storm" and the like. But a second, "good" Terminator sent back, an overmuscled, gun-wielding Sarah, and a bratty kid? Not the way to go.

Yours is not a very popular opinion, as many see the second movie as the better one, but I think I agree with you. The first film is raw, has a lot of heart. The second one is all action.

Not having seen either in years. there's almost nothing that still strikes me about the second. In the first, we witness a young woman becoming who she will be, and that's more compelling of a story than seeing her having become it.

I know a young man, approaching 30, has never had a girlfriend. Now, I've known he was gay since he was in his teens, but his parents seem to be completely oblivious.

He talks about women a LOT, how this one or that one seems to have the hots for him. He's one of those guys who doesn't quite look his age, looks like a little boy that all the ladies want to cuddle.

Anyhoo... yeah, nobody I know talks more about women he sees more than this kid. But the con seems to fool a lot of people.

That sail boat beat some deep dents into our hull as we transferred the crew. Those dents remained there until she was decommissioned.

And the sailboat had been smuggling dope when we did the rescue.

Storms and sailboats can be an interesting combination.

I am not sure why they are pivoting back to deaths. To talk of deaths, you open the discussion into the disproportionate number of deaths in NY, NJ, PA, and MI because of the criminal nursing home orders by the Dem governors. That is why they started talking about "cases" instead.

If that's a serious question: a Nantucket sleighride is when you harpoon a whale from a small boat and the whale drags the boat around until it tires.

Trump mentioning these figures guards against that ever happening.

256 You can't have a discussion about greedy corporate suits and their fetishistic obsession with copyrights without including the biggest example of all: The House of the Giant Rat. They sued a daycare facility down here for daring to paint images of their product on the walls.
Also note the various spinoffs of their greed in their active fellatio of their new market, China, through their outlets like MSESPN and ABC Nooz. And also their hiring of inferior foreign labor to fill jobs here in America. The long-time Disney employees were forced to train their foreign replacement or else they wouldn't get their meager severance packages. Many of those whom the rats in suits fired had been in IT jobs with Disney for decades. Then, BOOM! Out the door you go because our CEO team has to make their multi-million-dollar bonuses this quarter regardless of how many Americans they put in the unemployment line.

I'm a little more cynical. T3 was made because "Ah, damn! We didn't factor in anything for the rise of the Internet!" So they went into an alternate ending. And they kept right on going into hotter and hotter garbage.

I MIGHT forgive T3 had it stopped right there, but no, it didn't.

I liked how T3 overturned the time-travel trope that you can change the future by changing the past. Instead, it said you really can't. You can probably delay things or change specific details, but not the event itself. I think it made humanity look smaller than we see ourselves, and less powerful. It also allowed for the consequences of human hubris. Too bad the movie's execution of the idea wasn't good.

That reminds me of an infamous quote in the early 70's from an American Automobile exec, who said in an interview that American Drivers were not their customers, their only real customers were the Auto Dealers.

it explained the trouble the Auto industry soon found itself in pretty nicely. Big corps have generally been riding the wave of good will from most conservatives who favor a less intrusive system of government. But when it becomes widely known that they are anti-American, they can kiss all of that good will good by, as well as the only real friends they ever had.

Want to see the Sherman Anti-Trust Act given some more teeth and used to dismember most big business? Just keep it up, you'll see it.

I believe that information came out because of a Judicial Watch lawsuit. It wasn't a leak.

But it does feel like the new, anonymously sourced reports that say that Barr is pressuring Durham to wrap it up are designed to frame the narrative of the upcoming DOJ actions as politically motivated.

I've started wearing Wranglers just because they're the only ones I can find that are reasonably priced and don't either look like MC Hammer pants or said skinny beanpole leg silliness.

I liked Levi for a long time but the whole Hecho En Mejico thing sent their quality to hell. I can't remember ever wearing out a pair of jeans or busting a seam in the 80s, and now you're lucky to get two years out of a $40 pair of them. Nope.

My theory is that The Matrix spent years trying to get sold, which meant that it had to go through rewrites left and right before anyone agreed to fund it.

After that, it was just the Wachowskis allowed to film first and second drafts without that kind of focused input.

The difference in the really high quality opening of The Matrix versus the slog of nonsense that is the opening of both sequels is the clue I derived that little theory from.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gall_Force:_New_Era

Story is Kakinuma watched Cameron's movie and said he could do something better. So the audience got humans girls in space battling evil machine intelligences long long ago.

And the writers are wrong, there were people in the English speaking world who knew of Star Front Gall Force. Its just compared with another anime of that time called Bubblegum Crisis, most never gave Gall Force a look.

And then there were the sequels which followed that familiar arc of getting worse and worse until New Era literally ended everything.

Correct. When riots break out prior to the Election Day, any action by the National Guard would be framed as retribution or even - get this - election interference.

But 100% certainty that there will be massive rioting at polling places, just like the teamsters daring people to cross a line to go to work.

No, it's not enough. Obviously, they are looking at things well beyond FISA fraud. And much of the evidence was hidden intentionally by misfiling information and by over classifying documents. This isn't speculation, we know this to be true because of Flynn.

Once indictments start discovery starts by the coup plotters. The case needs to be completed before the indictments happen. That's how it works.

445 McConnell's only concern is to keep the Senate in a Republican majority. He has worked pretty tirelessly to get judges appointed and carry on whatever can get done without a 60 vote threshold. The senate has actually done a pretty good job in putting together their own bills on various issues as a response to the House. Frankly, I think given these circumstances and reality McConnell has done a decent job. He gets along well with the president, who now knows the reality of what can, and cannot be done. They have coordinated pretty effectively.

The big problem is not having the House. While I will give some credence to the fact that Republicans are in the minority, I think there is more to complain about with McCarthy. The guy is basically invisible, not very forward thinking or articulate. Where's his big campaign to show people why they should vote for Republicans in Congress? His "Contact with America" to show what their agenda will be?

Nowhere, that's where.

450 Have now received five (5) absentee ballot request forms, so far. Iowa. I think that might be typical, but they are definitely trying to "make a difference". It cannot force anyone to actually request a ballot. And it cannot force anyone to vote. And finally it cannot force anyone to vote for a certain candidate.

One would hope that the best outcome would be this will backfire bigly and in spectacular jaw dropping fashion, with a sweeping rout of elected democrats across the board, one for the history books and studied for generations in poli-sci classes.

I sent one in that had some of the info pre-printed, such as address, apparently that is a no-no. Sounds like I will have to resubmit. The ballots will be mailed no earlier than 29 days out.

Cloud Atlas plays off the ideas of reincarnation and soul clusters, which if I wasn't a Christian, I would probably embrace.

452 289 Trump down in Texas 64-36. The respected Axelrod poll of likely Democratic voters in the State proves it will be an early evening for the Incumbent President. David Axelrod, CEO of Axelrod Polls, said: "If tRump is this far down in Texas, Imagine how bad California looks."

I can attest this is wrong. It's Trump down 100-0 to Biden. People here in TX are rioting for the chance to vote for Biden RIGHT NOW.

453 But that's the big debate about history. Suppose it was a German century - wouldn't Europe still be corrupt and dying today, anyways? The people would have changed, but would the events?

Europe became corrupt and started to die once governments decided their #1 job is to coddle and baby people. Everything you see going on in Europe stems from that foundation.

Europe has been corrupt since the Roman Empire collapsed and the tribes took over.
It's baked into the cake.
