The Academy Begs you to Stop Paying Attention to them even more [TheJamesMadison]

It's been a long term problem for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences that their audience for the Oscar broadcast is getting smaller and smaller with every passing ceremony. The only time they seemed to care about this was the year after The Dark Knight could have been nominated and then wasn't. The Academy felt itself becoming irrelevant and decided to expand the Best Picture category from 5 movies to up to ten (there have only been ten nominees a couple of times since).

Well, the very next year the biggest movie ever, Avatar did get nominated, but no one thought it had a chance anyway, and while ratings have bounced up and down, they've never even begun to recover to the more historic numbers of decades past.

Well, it looks like that experiment in relevance is dead and buried.

Brought on by some changes at the top of the board earlier this year, they've upped their minority representation in both membership and on the board as well. And what did this do?

Did it increase the broad appeal of Academy choices?

Did it help align the Academy with the greater public?

Well, of course not. It wasn't designed to do that. It was designed to bend the knee to wokeness, and now the results are in.

"New Oscars standards say best picture contenders must be inclusive to compete" says the LA Times.

To be eligible for best picture, a film must meet at least two standards across four categories: "Onscreen Representation, Themes and Narratives," "Creative Leadership and Project Team," "Industry Access and Opportunities" and "Audience Development." Within each category are a variety of criteria involving the inclusion of people in underrepresented groups, including women, people of color, LGBTQ+ people and those with cognitive or physical disabilities.

The Oscars have steadily become a wokeness center, and now they're diving in with headfirst without any care in the world. Like many institutions in our culture today, they care far more about the opinions of Twitter and their peers more than what their core competencies are supposed to be. Long gone are the days when the Oscars celebrated movies with mass appeal, replaced by a desire to be as appealing to a narrow set of activists as possible.

The Oscars haven't been relevant in a while, but this just cements the fact that the Oscars aren't going to be relevant to the masses again any time soon.

Their appeal is becoming more selective at an ever-increasing pace.

85 The most effective thing the communists do is destroy standards. This is a destruction of standards. To be great, you must have some number of boxes ticked. It doesn't matter how great a movie might be, if those boxes aren't ticked then it isn't, by the new definition, great. It doesn't matter how mediocre a movie might be, if it ticks all of the boxes then it is eligible for greatness.

To destroy a thing, wreck its standards. We see this writ large across ever larger cross sections of civilization.

It was pointed out to me years ago that James Cameron only ever makes one movie: People being brought low as a result of their hubris in their technological advancements (this obviously excludes True Lies, which doesn't count because it was contractual obligation). Cameron is a very very talented one trick pony.

See this is a perfect illustration how two people can view the same films and come to wildly different opinions.

I thought BH was a solidly told and acted story.

It was interesting and had just enough grit to not make it a complete hagiography.

Rocket Man was, I thought, poorly told and poorly served by the some of the over the top magical realism/fantasia.

I also don't like Taron Egerton which didn't help.

Sort of. China doesn't exactly dictate terms, but Hollywood makes so much money in that market that if it's a significant investment, they'll comply with Chinese wishes. It is one of the reasons that word choice and language has been dumbed down so much in big movies. When a major part of revenue comes from translation and then the natives have to read the dialogue as subtitles, simplicity is a *good* thing. It doesn't make for great banter or layered dialogue, though...

157 OT 1

It's at least intriguing and possibly a big deal that the Trumpentwatters retweeted something this morning by one of the independent observer/analysts who have been almost the only source of good info and analysis during the entire C19 episode.

A fairly limited, simple point being made in the tweet about their being no "2nd wave", but rather the entirely predictable and historically observed occurrence of *different* waves (of different shape) which typically occur at different latitudes ("seasonality").

It isn't possible that any of the facts, science, and sense found easily on Twitter could have formed the part of *any* discussions of the task force since March, based on policy and rhetoric. So this is an extraordinary little tidbit today, if one has followed the real story of C19 it is sort of a mini-bombshell, at least in kremlinology terms (i.e., what the F is going on inside the WH).

I kinda wonder if the diversity initiative is the younger "artistic integrity" crowd trying to wrestle back some control of Hollywood from the studio money men, knowing no one can really say no To "inclusivity" in this political climate.

It's not like Chinese cinema prejudices are a sudden discovery compared to twenty years ago.

175 The Midnight Movies

Neil Young's RUST NEVER SLEEPS was a better weird concert movie because it was shorter than The Song Remains the Same and had no drum solos. Plus, it had Ewoks.

Alice Cooper's WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE was fun.

ELP's ROCK AND ROLL YOUR EYES was way cool and only the length of an album, which was a plus.

WOODSTOCK was for old hippies and we mostly spent that one on the parking lot. Yeah, yeah Hendrix. Whatever. Overrated bore.

Same with MONTERREY POP but Janis Joplin's part was cool.

YESSONGS - see ELP. Short, rocked hard, big YES fanatic so I loved that one.

ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW - unless you wanted to be covered in food within seconds and possibly get in a fight, we skipped it. Good soundtrack but the crazy-asses where I lived didn't do it right and every time it just turned into a food fight, usually followed by a brawl and arrests. Eventually they stopped showing it, at the request of the police.

The Oscars was once just a small dinner ceremony for the Hollywood people. It can go back to being that, for all I care.

Rush pointed this out the other day in a good monologue about marketing... athletics, the media, and also Hollywood are the only products that openly get to degrade and belittle their consumer. In everything else the customer is always right, the customer is king. Those institutions have forgotten that.

217 The academy awards have always been incredibly pretentious, ego-driven self-insisting boredom. Only rarely were they kind of interesting (when a streaker ran across the stage, when Marlon Brando sent out a native activist to make a speech, etc).

The more obnoxious, disgusting, and incompetent Hollywood gets, the less people want to celebrate their work. Every major industry has an award thing like this, but only Hollywood and TV gets this kind of attention. Even the Grammies don't really get very much notice. And are the Tonys even broadcast?

But with Weinstein and wokeness and pedos, its impossible to even want to see this crap except in kind of a train wreck way. Peak Oscars was when mean-spirited lesbian Ellen DeGeneres took that "selfie" pic with a carefully selected group as if they are just friends but clearly were only celebrating themselves.

A buddy from HS told me that you had to be stoned to enjoy Pink Floyd's The Wall. I easily decided to take his word for it and avoid having to do either.
Posted by: Chin music at September 14, 2020 05:37 PM (69XrE)

I never saw The Wall in the theater, but when it came out on VHS, I got totally baked with some friends and we watched it twice in one night.

That experience cured me of any love for Waters-era Floyd.

Funny thing though, a few years later we had weekend "screenings" of the Waters-less Delicate Sound of Thunder concert vid and Apocalypse Now in the barracks with a bunch of drunken soldiers camped out in the dayroom. A decidedly more pleasant experience.

Pride and Prejudice
Batman Begins
Joyeux Noel (was nominated for Best Foreign Film...but way better than any of the Best Picture nominees)
A History of Violence
Cinderella Man

Frankly, "Hoodwinked" deserved a nomination more than "GN and GL".

All of this a year after "The Passion of the Christ" was not nominated for Best Picture (when it should have been nominated and won easily).

305 Since we're on culture, I was recently exposed to a song called "New Americana" by a broad calling herself Halsey. Here's the first half:

Cigarettes and tiny liquor bottles
Just what you'd expect inside her new Balenciaga
Vile romance, turned dreams into an empire
Self made success now she woes with Rockefellers

Survival of the richest
The city's ours until the fall
They're Monaco and Hamptons bound
But we don't feel like outsiders at all

We are the new Americana
High on legal marijuana
Raised on Biggie and Nirvana
We are the new Americana

So, to summarize, apparently getting stoned, listening to music and harboring class resentment is the "New Americana."

When, Halsey? When was this new? Was it when your grandparents were doing the exact same thing *and* writing songs about it?

California Court of Appeal ruled that it violated the Constitution's right of privacy -- the California Constitution's right of privacy. 348 Just finished watching a 1953 B & W British film on YouTube, Turn the Key Softly. It focuses on three women just being released from prison: Granny, a compulsive shoplifter who's been inside more than once; Stella (Joan Colllins), clearly a prostitute, though the word is never used; and Monica, a classy woman who got caught when her lover, a burglar, left her at the scene of the crime. How do they adjust to life outside?

It's well filmed, a drama with some romance and an exciting climax, and a reminder of a time when people dressed in their best to go out and you could rely on a policeman if you were in trouble. Grand film, grand story (based on a novel).

372 The reason I believe Wolf's action was found Unconstitutional was because he violated Equal Protection under the Law in his orders. (I haven't had time to read the Judicial decision yet) The easiest way to illustrate this is his designation of some institutions as "essential", which could stay open, and some as "non-essential" which could not be. The Constitution allows for no completely arbitrary distinctions of some people and some businesses as more important than others. Therefore, it may be allowable to shut down everyone, or to open everyone, but not to pick and choose winners and losers based on the Executive's whims.

that would be why this wouldn't apply to masks. As long as all parties are treated equally, then the equal protection mandate is satisfied, no matter how bad the treatment is.

No they gave it to a movie with a screwed up time line, the whole thing was a flashback but they put a flashback within the flashback. But it did have a opening scene that had my gaydar on red alert. A bunch of young athletic men running barefooted along a beach with camera work that made me very uneasy. Big theme song during the little run.
The grayed out news clips of "Cuties" reminds me of the camera work in that old movie. Hollywood and California have now advanced from pushing homosexuality to pedophilia and pedo-sodomy while the entire state burns down. If they did not have fires they would have no lights at all.
