September 12 [KT]

Bear Fire Complex just west of Oroville

Today, on September 12, I thought it would be a good time to check in with Gerard Van der Leun at American Digest. It has been about two years since he had to scramble to escape with his life, his kitten and his car from the fire in Paradise, California. He also remembers 9/11. He is facing new challenges.

He seems to have a knack for balancing attention to the past, present and future. You can visit his site at the link above, where there is much more content, newest content first, in reverse order to the few links I am presenting below. His "back pages" are also worth visiting. This post has already moved to the back pages:

This was the scene when I went to this intersection for a doctor's appointment at 9:00 AM in Chico. This is what it was like for over a week after the Paradise fire of 2018 burned me out. It does not make for a relaxing morning.

It's now 11:00 AM and outside my windows, it is dark as a moonless night with a red glow all around. . .

More scenes of darkness shown and described, with comparisons to the Camp Fire that destroyed his home in Paradise.

I don't think I have enough strength or funds to go through all this again.

what-a-laborious-da.jpg

This guy is brilliant.

How is everybody else doing? Are you or your loved ones affected by the fires?

Here's a remarkable essay on September 10, 2001:

I've been trying to remember September 10 but it's no go.

I know what I must have been doing, but I don't remember what I did. I kept no notes on that most ordinary of September days. I kept many notes on the day that followed and the days, weeks, months and years that followed that day. What I do know is that whatever might have followed September 10 was taken from us all that day never to be returned or recaptured only avenged. What I do know is that "justice being served" has no part in it, and never did.

I can, of course, assume what I did -- what I must have done -- on a routine Monday in Brooklyn Heights. . .

What the nation has become, through death by fire, bravado, war, forgetfulness, treason, and blunt stupidity could not have been foretold on September 10, but here we are. It is a difficult reality that has been dealt by the hands of fate; one that is still being played out. . .

Well, you need to read the whole thing to get the point.

Then some music, Gun Free Zone. Heh. Then Victor Davis Hanson on the origins of Western Civilization.

The Victor Davis Hanson video provides us with an opportunity to take a break from American Digest to check in with Trent Telenko on The Giants of Flight 93 - Plus 19 Years

Today, 9/11/2020, is the nineteenth anniversary of Al-Qaeda's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center's twin towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Often forgotten or glossed over as time goes on were the actions of the passengers of Flight 93, whose resistance to Al-Qaeda's suicide-hijacker team brought the plane down in Shanksville, PA rather than Al-Qaeda's chosen target, saving the lives of other Americans at the price of their own.

On the 2018 anniversary of 9/11/2001, President Trump dedicated the National Park Service memorial to their actions that day. . .

Yet for all that, I have not seen anything matching what a friend of mine, Tom Holsinger, wrote about 9/11/2001 and the people on Flight 93 -- our fellow citizens who rose up and fought Al Qaeda, when all others, our military, our political leaders, our law enforcement, were frozen in surprise -- at the strategypage.com web site in October 2002. I have not read any written commemoration of their act, before or since, as moving as this passage:

Students of American character should pay close attention to Flight 93. A random sample of American adults was subjected to the highest possible stress and organized themselves in a terribly brief period, without benefit of training or group tradition other than their inherent national consciousness, to foil a well planned and executed terrorist attack. Recordings show the passengers and cabin crew of Flight 93 - ordinary Americans all - exemplified the virtues Americans hold most dear.

Certain death came for them by surprise but they did not panic and instead immediately organized, fought and robbed terror of its victory. They died but were not defeated.

Ordinary Americans confronted by enemies behaved exactly like the citizen-soldiers eulogized in Victor Davis Hanson's Carnage and Culture. . .

This post also describes a memorial that citizens spontaneously set up at the site. Worth reading. Worth remembering.

Van der Leun also posts the notes he made on September 11, 2001 from Brooklyn Heights. What he saw. What he thought.

And the Memorial at the White House this year.

The Missing

And a fascinating new essay posted just this morning, The Wind in the Heights.

Past, Present and Future

For more on September 11, 2001 don't forget the segment at the end of J.J. Sefton's Morning Report yesterday.

And concerning related current and future events, remember those peace deals.

Music

Hope you have a good weekend. Treat each other well.

24 I remember following the Paradise fire closely, and annoying some people on the net by pointing out that this wasn't a purely "natural" catastrophe, that it was directly caused by longstanding California policies and attitudes. And that there was a reason that huge fires like this, that burn down entire towns, rarely happen elsewhere. (I do recall a bad fire in the Great Smokey Mountains once)

Several of us pointed out that if California didn't change its ways, events like this were going to keep happening, over and over. Well, two years later, here we are.

Disney's cartoon version of Alice in Wonderland is rightfully considered a classic. It's stunning art, well acted, and tells an amusing tale.

I've never read the book, and the DVD version (which has been watched by my kids many times over) includes discussions of Lewis Carroll and his "fondness" for the girls of the Little family.

Now, I think there's little doubt (pun intended) that Lewis was a pedophile. In the truest sense of the word, even if he never touched any of the girls. And here's this Dinsey "story" being told, the behind the scenes extras on the DVD, doing their damnedest to paint Carroll's interest in the girls in the best possible light.

Of course there are also the well-worn tales of Nickelodeon channel (and Disney channel) having pedos all up and down the productions of their kids shows... and the well worn tales of Hollywood child actors and actresses being passed around like candy.

So I think the disconnect between critics and audiences of this latest Netflix show is, the critics have long been on board with the pedo stuff. Audiences have been duped into not knowing it was going on, for the most part, and now here's this Netflix film, and it's being thrown right in their faces.

I'm shocked, SHOCKED to discover there's pedo stuff going on in this establishment!

Here are your Dan Schneider shows, sir.

Oh thank you very much.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me;
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free!
While God is marching on.

When Joanie Phony Baez sang it, she changed it to "let us live to make men free" diluting the power of a great song.

I'm sorry your friends died. I know there are others here on this site for whom 9/11 was more personal.

I still don't know what to make of Rumsfeld. He seemed to want to be responsible in the use of force, and to do so with as little exposure to risk for Americans as possible.

I wonder if at some point the whole thing got to be entirely beyond his control. Or if he was always part of the Perpetual War crowd. I don't know.

Which is perfectly understandable, regarding movie reviewers wanting new and different.

I do too.

There just seems to be a blind spot for some TYPES of different. Particularly, anything that "subverts expectations."

I know that's now a joke meme, since Roundhead Rian Johnson abused the term for his stupid Star Wars movie, but there's some truth to the basic human need for new and different. It lights up other parts of the brain. Parts that like being lit up.

The trick is to make sure the thinking part of the brain has a say in where things go. And that, in a nutshell, is what is wrong with MUCH of what happens in humans. Too much limbic system (and others), not enough cerebral cortex.

There's credible evidence that the security cameras at the Pentagon were tampered with. There appears to be a missing frame, and not just missing, but also REPLACED after the fact, before it got released.

Why?

I don't know. I don't believe anything other than the airplane that is supposed to have hit the Pentagon, hit the Pentagon, but they doctored the tape. Of that I'm sure.

It is odd how so many Lefties have chosen to defend "Cuties," though. Saw one who had the usual LGBTQ buzzwords in her twitter bio, and she likened hate for "Cuties" to suppression of queer kids coming out. Of course. It's not about an 11 year old gyrating for the camera, it's that our current LGBTQ activists and allies encourage and demand kids explore their sexual identity early, often, and for public consumption, whether it's "Desmond is Amazing," "I Am Jazz," or "Cuties."

124 "After everything we know and have been through the last 5 years with
Trump, why does Teh Horde still take at face value the official
narrative of 9/11?"

idk what the official Teh Horde stance is on globalist involvement in 9/11. As with the plandemic, we prefer to think they only took advantage of the event (never let a crisis go to waste), as opposed to it being a manufactured crisis, to cover ?? whatever was destroyed in building 9?

The surveillance state (Stellar Wind) was well under way before 9/11/01, but that event ushered in new levels of secret spying ... on congress and judges, and then contractors were given access to all of it? wtf? imo, trillions of wealth of our nation has been extracted via various covert means ... tax free foundations, bailouts, secret contracts, five eyes spying/coercion on our own officials, missing billions never accounted for ...

The globalists are certainly capable of such attacks, and have at the least, certainly used events to further their agenda, and bury their criminal activities. The constant coup is the clearest evidence, as other evidence is actively wiped away by the investigators themselves.

We also had a cool front come through so it was a very pleasant day in CenTex. The upshot is there were tons of kids outside playing and interacting together in person! I'm talking about more generalized "subverting expectations." Or more broadly, critics are more likely to key in on ANY movie that surprises them.

It doesn't have to be "kink" per se. The one they did about Hollywood a couple years ago, and won a bunch of Oscars, La La Land... it would appear to be more naval gazing by the industry, but people sang! And flew!

So it's different enough to excite them.

Personally I think Parasite is way overrated, but it's a Korean movie, and people act quirky. So the critics ate it up.

I hope the US Attorney is not, and deals with the SAIC accordingly.

We read "news" today for emotional reasons, to trigger passions, dopamine hits, bias confirmations, but certainly not for a better understanding of our world around us.

188 I wonder why that is?

The left controls the narrative, and they have always sought slavery. Too many of us accept the premises of the left even as we disagree with their conclusions. Even to the point of calling good evil.

That's one of the reasons I'm coming around to the "live to make men free" version of the song. The original lyrics were written during a war, for soldiers and families of soldiers, to destroy an evil in pure form.

But evil always returns, and not always in such an obvious manner. It is always a fight to keep men free. We cannot allow enslaving ideologies to mask us again in barbarous chains. Reagan and Abraham Lincoln both warned us that we must dedicate not only our dying but our living to keeping America a land of the free.

There is great bravery in dying for freedom, but there's also bravery in living for freedom when all around you are living to submit to the Stephen Douglases of the world. That, also, is a bravery worth singing of.

Something I've been thinking of recently.

From the pilot who pulled the trigger, to the Airman who did the post flight service of the plane and everyone in between would know missiles had been pickled off.

Three F-16 ADFs of the 119th launched from Langley. Two were the alert birds fully armed. Third was the spare and only armed with 20mm for the M-61.

When all three planes finally landed back at Langley, one of the crew chiefs who arrived after the planes had launched saw that Bogey's plane was clean of missiles and assumed there had been a shoot down.

From that false assumption that the crew chief passed on to others arose the urban legend that we had shot down an airliner.

Aside from the gleeful genocide in the first three stanzas, the last stanza is pure bad doctrine. Blasphemous actually.

Basically Julie Ward Howe tried to caricature Jesus Christ as the ultimate Antifa and Burning, Looting and Murder as the Gospel.

231 That fire picture got better a few minutes later when it exploded that entire hillside.

I evacuated after the hillside literally exploded in a huge fireball the length of that hill.
It sucked all it's smoke to the center and pushed a huge column of smoke skyward.

This was about 1 am.

People live over there in that forest.
They've found nine dead.
Fire rescued over a hundred.

At the bottom of that picture is a finger of Lake Oroville. Highway 162 is at the bottom of the hill from right to left...goes to Quincy from Oroville.

I didn't want to leave when I did but GF was hysterical.

237 Re: the fires out west. I read Joe Mannix's (not a cop!) passionate comments yesterday about living in the mountains and the dread of wildfire. I grew up in CO, too, albeit the suburbs of Denver. When I go out to visit, I am stunned at what has happened to the spruce forests of the front range. Due to another nasty Chynah export, the pine betel, easily half the stock of pine forest is dead, standing trees*. Combined this with the US Forest Service long standing policy of suppression, it seems like Colorado could be 10X worse than the fires of CA. There are so many people who live in the mountains now, thanks to CA migration and home cost disparity, the life and property loss would be insane.
My wife and I talked to one logger out there, and he told us he had a 10 year contract to cut down the dead trees, and they wouldn't put a dent in the problem.
*Dead standing trees cause the crown fires, that move at 30-40 mph. You can't out run them.

One of the old Christian heresies that Umberto Eco put into Foucault's Pendulum (along with every other bit of cultural bric-a-brac he could find) was the idea that the Old Testament was actually Lucifer's version of the early history of man, and that the New Testament was God's.

270 In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea

I think the original narrative had Him born in a manger.

With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me

I have no idea what that is, probably trigger language since "glory" and "transfigures" is incorrectly used in this context. According to Paul's writings in 2 Cor 3, its transfiguration of the believer into the image of Christ (not a mass murderer) that reveals the Glory. Now only does Howe have a horse-cart ordering problem, she can't even recognize the cart.

As He died to make men holy

That is heretical. He died to pay the wages of Sin.

let us live to make men free While God is marching on

Some might argue a context shift makes this "Ok", but in the midst of pseudo theological claptrap its only Christ who can make men free.

Yeah, but if you love the blasphemous/genocide glorifying song - I must be the stupid one.

No need to smoke when your mouth tastes like an ashtray just from walking from the car to the house.

...and I'll keep sticking to it.

I hate Soros as much as anyone else here but he's not to blame for everything, and his going away does not void his evil.

I have a deep and abiding mistrust of my school board, so you can expect that mistrust to amplify as we go up the ladder. As for the UN, they have their uses so I don't mind keeping them around, but I'm all about running them out of the country and sending them packing to Geneva or Vienna, and turning the UN HQ in New York into a parking garage for visitors brave enough to want to visit.

(I DO appreciate someone finally attempting to explain WTF a "globalist" is. I'm sticking to my explanation. While I have no room for the Soroses of the world, I'm good with trade with nations not the PRC, and I'm good with some other things as well. For instance, the EU sucks, and should be reducted to what the Common Market was, say, pre-1978. But an isolationist looking everywhere for demons I am not. There are too many bad actors within and without the country for me to do that.)

It was only a matter of time before that happened.

Here's another one. November 22, 1963. When it was announced to people that Aldous Huxley and C.S. Lewis died, everyone remembers where they were. My parents can tell you where they were when they heard Aldous Huxley and C.S. Lewis died. But to me it was just another day in history.

301 Having studied both, so its your contention that their is no battle, nor wrath of God, in the Old Testament?

Without Sin, Judgement, Hate and Wrath its hard to justify Justice, Sacrifice, Redemption and Love.

In the midst of the Curse in the earliest chapters of Genesis, there was a promise of salvation and redemption.

And Revelation to John doesn't look like a Garden party. Also selections from the Gospels and letters by Peter and Paul talk about wiping out/renewing the entire Universe whereas the OT, outside of the Great Deluge, was localized demonstrations of Wrath.

This part of CO today is the bluest blue. We had rain on Tuesday - Thursday, and the clouds started clearing yesterday. Our fires have been mostly extinguished for a couple weeks now, and last weekend smoke covered much the state, coming from the West Coast.

So as I mentioned earlier, I'm grateful for blue skies.

While others are dealing with it now, we in Colorado are free of it... for now.

336 One of the old Christian heresies that Umberto Eco put into Foucault's Pendulum (along with every other bit of cultural bric-a-brac he could find) was the idea that the Old Testament was actually Lucifer's version of the early history of man, and that the New Testament was God's.

That idea always struck me as mildly interesting, although wrong. Can't remember the specific name of the heresy though.

344 Here's a remarkable essay on September 10, 2001:

I've been trying to remember September 10 but it's no go.
I know what I must have been doing, but I don't remember what I did. I kept no notes on that most ordinary of September days. I kept many notes on the day that followed and the days, weeks, months and years that followed that day. What I do know is that whatever might have followed September 10 was taken from us all that day never to be returned or recaptured...

In a similar way, we are going through a similar "new normal" regarding COVID-19.

Does anyone remember what it was like just 6 months ago when no one knew or cared about COVID-19; or wearing masks before being allowed into any store or restaurant; or "social distancing"; or limitations on gatherings such as church services, funerals and weddings; or cancellations of all fan-attended professional and college sporting events, etc?

And does anyone think elected officials are going to ever allow us to return or recapture that lifestyle ever again?

The big difference between the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and this COVID-19 op is that while the government enacted the Patriot Act and stricter travel security, elected officials encouraged everyone to get back to living life as normal.

Now, the rule is if you can turn the fire OFF, rather than have to put it out, you can still grill, but to me that's cheating.

In 1964, 1992, 2008, 2012, and 2016, CO went blue. Red all other times since 1964.

BUT a closer look at the state government reveals its Dem tendencies. In my lifetime, it has had only ONE Republican gov, for eight years. Bill Owens, of course.

Colorado of course is all in with the mail in balloting. Which I assume means any reversal is not possible.

My only concern is, this year we knocked off a Gope in Congress, and the Republican candidate is a political novice (an awfully good looking one). So I'm wondering if the mail in nonsense is sufficiently in place to keep her from winning in November, when all indications I've seen is that the district SHOULD be very very red.

She's running against a harpy who has run for this office before, and presumably has backing from the lefties on the front range. If she wins..... I can't see how she could possibly win, unless their cheating is that good.

No such message of "if we don't get back to living life as normal and stop living in fear, the virus has won" has been pushed today.

Just the opposite, in fact. Now the message is to force everyone to live in fear... of a barely-more-dangerous-than-seasonal-flu virus.

We live in a complete opposite culture and society now than we did just 20 years ago. Hell, H1N1 was just 11 years ago. And the live-in-fear message was not pushed back then.

Back in the day, over a dozen years ago, our parish was solicited to host a funeral for a member of one of the DuPont families in this area. We did so.

Later, our Rector told us (the members of the vestry) the reason that the service came to be at our parish was that we had no ban on the playing of "The Battle Hymn of The Republic", whereas the decedent's home parish for the swells, just up the road, forbade it.

Proto-woke and Episcopalian is no way to go through life, or commemorative services after death.

I'm NOT paying close enough attention to know exactly what he's saying might be lies, and which things he says may be direct contradictions of stuff he's said before, but the general gist is, he's bouncing the message like a superball.

Posted by: Margarita DeVille at September 12, 2020 01:38 PM

Same here. I asked these exact questions and posed that exact scenario about 3-4 weeks into this mess back around the beginning of April.

Back then it was becoming obvious, as they kept extending the shutdowns based on... nothing, really.

And then when it became obvious that they were lying about the numbers, yet no one was calling them on it, it dawned on me that they could keep this going indefinitely. Because there was no possible way to check them, since the numbers were garbage.

Then, like you said, they moved the goalposts. Instead of "slowing the spread", it became "stay home, stay safe, save lives". Then it turned from a focus on the deaths to a focus on the cases. And then we found out the cases data was bullshit, because the tests were bullshit. Then they enacted the contact tracing and the 14-day quarantine. Then it was "wait for the vaccine".

And on and on and on and on. Constantly moving the goalposts and changing the targets and changing the way to count the data, and changing which data was actually important.

For the first month or two, I was religiously following the data and doing calculations and comparisons, trying to make sense of it all and predict when they could open things up again. I immediately said to fuck with it all once I found out the data was all bullshit.

And came to develop my theory that this is all a Deep State-China joint op and they're going to keep us like this for as long as they want to sow chaos.

Dr. Anthony Fauci's 15 Totally Wrong Predictions and Contradictions

I think it is beyond obvious by now that this is a Deep State op and Fauci was their main man.

What got me thinking early on was how the media absolutely LOVED Dr. Fauci.

Think back to any Republican Administration in our lifetimes and name even one official whom the media loved like they do Fauci. There have been none. Every official in a Republican Administration has always been hated and never trusted by the media and Left.

So for every single one of them to never question a damn thing that came out of Fauci's mouth and to never call him to task on his numerous contradictory statements... tells me that everyone in the media knew he was a Deep State plant and were told to treat him as such.

The US brokered peace deals between Israel and the UAE and Bahnrain are "isolating the Palestinians."

I would love to isolate the Palestinians on that island in the Indian Ocean where that erstwhile missionary got killed by the natives.

Yeah, remember the Vegas massacre and how that was swept under the rug within weeks and no one ever talked about it again, not even the left to push gun control?

Then there was that Islamic children training compound somewhere (New Mexico?) where children were being taught how to commit school shootings or something? As soon as it started to get into social media, *poof!* the training facility was bulldozed to the ground and nothing ever heard about it again.

And we know Soros is funding all this shit that's been going on the last 6 months, but has anyone arrested him and charged him? Nope. And now the cruise-ship Republican journalists accuse anyone of criticizing Soros as "anti-Semitic", since Soros has them on their payroll.

As Leonard Cohen sings, "Everybody Knows the fight is fixed. That's how it goes. Everybody knows." We have not been a nation of laws in decades.

I wonder if there's something to this, the parts that involve muslim terrorists, has the government basically decided there's going to be a moratorium on identifying the culprits, because of the p.c. nonsense about how it'll cause the rest of us to be mean to the muzzies?

I think it's patently obvious they do that in Europe, where the clampdown is almost immediate and total. Before the blood is even dry on the pavement. Are we also doing it here?

I answered your ONT midnight post with a later post. With more details.

That takes nothing away from the bravery of the Flight 93 team of heroes. They are still people to be very proud of. They were the only ones to down a terrorist plane that day.

The Feds in Air Traffic Control and the AF team did very well, but it was ordinary citizens who got the odds down to 3 planes vice four.

431 Wildfires set by arson occur all the time, often but not always the perps and full details are revealed by the investigation. Will be the same here.

And one thing about origin points near interstates and major roads. Ignition sparks from vehicles are actually the culprit in a significant number of cases - seems bizarre, but true. Also - general dumbassery by people (who of course are more numerous/present along interstates) accounts for another noticeable category. Not just cigarettes tossed out the window - much more ridiculous stuff. But not intentional.

I think that's what a lot of the interviews are now, practice for Biden so he can seem less out of it for the debates.

Which is going to include some tech to help him along. Bugs in his ears, teleprompters off-camera. Pre-fed questions.

They'll pull out all the stops, and I damn well expect they will NOT let Trump confront Biden directly.

This, a presidential nominee spot for Biden, is rarefied air. He's never done well before - not without help from the MSM - and he won't do well in the debates now.

In the financial business, this is called reversion to the mean. In the best of times, Biden would be expected to fall to earth - and these certainly aren't the best of times for Sundown Joe.

The Biden campaign is on life support, and the plug will be formally pulled on 29 Sep 2020.

If you're trading Trump stock in the futures market, you'd best get your buy orders in before the first debate.

Wow! You mean while Canada is experiencing 3-5 wildfires, our West Coast and Mountain West States are experiencing 100s in clusters , and Marxist terrorists are being arrested for setting them along with video footage?!?!
I'm shocked AntiFa/BLM/NeoCons/Derp State would do such things. /s
Spoiler: I'll safely estimate based on Canada's vast wilderness which is comparable to ours, that at least 80% of the hundreds of fires raging were started on purpose.
Asymmetric warfare, baby!
