Ron Coleman Has an Epiphany: We Live in Different Moral Universes, and We Are No Longer Even Close to Being One People

Ron Coleman, a conservative lawyer who has defended bloggers in free speech cases, has always been #based, so this isn't some weak National Review c#ck suddenly seeing the light.

But he's made a big realization: There is no putting Humpty Dumpty together again.

I think a lot of people are going to be making some major realizations in the coming days.

I guess I had an epiphany. It is funny how we think we're "based now," but are, really, still stuck in old mindsets.

On the way to my new office I drive past the office of a relative whose law office I once worked in as an intern, many years ago. He was kind and generous.
Though we never grew close, I was always grateful for his early guidance and exposure to law practice. He is pretty successful. We have lived nearby, and stay in touch a bit.

But politics... politics, like sex, changes everything.

He is a committed Clintonite.

And as my public persona has become more and more political in recent years, we have clashed.

I have tried to avoid personal conflict with him, but above all I have been astonished at his intellectual dishonesty about the people and causes he supports.

And what I am often trying to do is justify myself, show him his attacks on my views (say, on Facebook, where they are mostly likely to be found) are based on mistaken premises, etc.

I always liked him. But now I am driving by his office regularly, and I don't stop in.

And I thought about this, and another relationship came to mind - one with a former college professor of mine whom I respect and like a lot. He is a liberal, too, but he is also fighting an important public cultural fight against a particularly ugly LW myth that is about.

We recently renewed our relationship when Mrs. C picked up his book on this topic, and we attended a public lecture of his nearby, and it was really very pleasant.

(This is why you go to the great universities, by the way.)

And we started corresponding.

And I should have known trouble was brewing because at this lecture, involving a topic in American history, there was a Q&A session, and inevitably Trump came up, and inevitably he reassured the audience that Trump was awful and deserved to be removed.

And we chalked this up to, well, the social milieu. He "has to say that." He even has to believe it.

Everyone can have his blind spots, and politics is, well, funny. After all, his generation was raised to believe that Nixon was the antichrist.

Nixon was not the antichrist.

But in the course of our correspondence about the culture war, in which we agreed about just about everything, the politics crept in, inevitably.

And rather than excerpt his comments, presumably meant to be private, let's just say what I hoped was not the case, is the case:

We do not live in the same moral universe.

This cannot be a matter of how we understand or perceive facts. The way people on the left describe facts is a manifestation of an outlook that is a set of choices.

These choices are not defensible any more, if they ever were.

And I was writing in this mode of trying to find common ground - and to his credit, he was, too... except that his "factual" premises (merely political conclusions) were just absurd. They were no more reasonable or measured, in and of themselves, than a Twitter exchange.

Although, again, the tone was, and this is not for nothing.

And I thanked him for this thoughts, and promised I would write back.

I have not written back.

I guess am tired of doing the work with ... these people.

"These people" who I like, as people. Who have been generous to me, who have extended themselves personally, who are humane and generous... but in the hyper-politicized world we all live in, it is I who have to prove to them, constantly, that no, I'm still ok!

I am certainly not going to go out of my way to antagonize "these people." I at least owe them that much.

But I guess I am tired of going out of my way to assuage them, reassure them, be the moderate one, pretend to think their takes could be reasonable.

To pretend.

Why I am pretending to tolerate people who believe I am in league with Literal Nazis and that in supporting Trump I am supporting, as another academic I have known for years said of him on Facebook, "the worst person who ever lived"?

He has tenure, and he wrote this publicly.

You can't go home again.

I don't know if I can ever stop in at that office halfway between my home and my work where I had my summer internship 35 years ago. I like my dad's cousin, because I like most people.

But I do not respect him. He does not respect me.

Is this a proper epiphany, though? Should we be as Marxists and indeed politicize everything and every relationship, even when there are common and human reasons to want to maintain them?

Or is it just rational to avoid inevitable conflict and inevitable retreat?

Don't lose the thread now, Ron. You're so close.

John Ekdahl also just had a moment of clarity. He's been an NFL lifer. Yeah, he's been very annoyed by the #WokeFL, but he couldn't kick the habit.

He now says, "I'm out."

A lot of people are Leveling Up in basedness.

Do you know anyone who's had an epiphany? Have you yourself Leveled Up?

I know a lot of conservatives are patriots and do not want to lose America as we know it -- but America as we knew it has been dead for a decade.

The left believes the future is set in stone, and the now, the very facts of life and the world around us, are changeable.

If everyone thinks "right", then we can have utopia. And we will, for it is foreordained.

This is why the left hates people not just for acting against their utopia, not even just for speaking against it, but for even daring to *think* against it.

I now understand that libertarians are quite comfortable with communism.

In fact, libertarian communism even has its own name: anarchism.

I get now why the Reasonoids were always so eager to join with the left - they were always on the same side.

The difference was that libertarians hate *state* control; but they're fine with maga-corps running your life, because they assume they will be running them.

20 They truly believe a man in a dress is a woman and a human child in the womb is possibly some type of badger or swan, and no one knows what comes out until birth. That the parties switched names. That all black people are bumbling, low-IQ sociopaths who can neither learn nor behave. That (literally, in the last week or so) 2+2 =/= 4 because white men discovered math. That periods at the end of sentences are "triggering."

There is no common sense anymore. There is no science any more. The left is actively and willingly trying to move society back into a second dark age.

I dread what comes next if this isn't dealt with in the next four years.

21 This is what I've been sayin for a while. Morals 'feel' right. Unexamined, one believes them to be univeral. The left's moral framework was corrupted long ago when it abandoned G-d and a belief in objective reality. The divide is irreconcilable as long as the left believes that anything with which is disagrees is not just wrong but immoral.

In the end, Ron Coleman is divorced from much of his profession. But that profession already has far, far too much power over our society. At the peak of optimism, all lawyers need to be fired, Congress needs to be sacked, and all elite bankers forced into submission. Otherwise we're just re arranging deck chairs on the Titanic, and are heading for a Pol Pot style purge of all the elites who are irretrievably hostile to the American population that they are parasites on.

If he believed what he said, the poor fool would quit and find some honest work before they purge him from law.

The funny thing about pizzagate and Epstein, is that we had a full on national discussion about whether there were a group of elites literally getting away with abusing children because they were to well protected by the government.

And the left laughed and laughed about it.

Then we found out Epstein's ring was running at that same time with full knowledge of the government, and it involved any number of members of the elites...all too well protected by the government to touch.

Interesting isn't it?

And of course Epstein has disappeared from the FNM even though not one Epstein client has been arrested.

Communists believed that they would be able to 'reprogram' Man, into Soviet Man, who would be able to live in a perfect Communist paradise.

Think on the assumptions that implies.

1. That Human Nature can be formed.

2. That Human Nature HAD to be reformed.

That is todays left. Sadly, they have been successful in reprograming certain segments of our population. We don't even speak the same language anymore.

The Left believes in reprograming us into an image they like, through the Power of the State.

The Right mostly believes that Human Nature, is just that, human. Thus the government should reflect that already pre-existing Nature.

There can be no reconciliation between the American people and their ruling class, only domination by one of the other.

141 I am almost there, done with all liberals. The only person I am hanging onto is my daughter, who is currently going to college, working and living with us. She is liberal, but so far not a flamer at all. My husband once stated "When you are young you are a liberal, then you get older, have a job and become a conservative". IE - the real world interjects itself. She hates Joe Biden, and thinks both parties are full of people out to enrich themselves - well I can't argue with that.

But she still loves to shoot, understands that money has to be earned, and we all have to take responsiblility for ourselves. No drugs, minimal alcohol (hey she's 22 - a wine cooler now and then doesn't worry me) and has made Dean's list last two semesters. I pray for her daily, and hope that she will grow out of this as she gets away from the university setting.

We agree to disagree. I point out how stupid the democrats are strategically (hey, Tulsi Gabbard would have been better than Grandpa Joe) and she points out how obnoxious Trump is. (Well, yes, but look at what he gets done) I look for things we agree on, and hug her when I can, to treasure her in case she goes over to the dark side.

What has really hurt me was losing the church I went to, but that was four years ago. I woke up post election and had to listen to the vitriol of TDS from fellow choir members, the choir director, the priest - it was just horrible. So I left. But God is faithful, because now my husband is attending church with me for the first time in 26 years of marriage! Now we are searching for a new church, since COVID has basically shut down the one we were attending.

After the last election, I lost several friends to TDS. Now I dont try to reach out. I have acquaintances, but true friends? Not much. So sad.

142 The only thing as yet uncertain is exactly what form the conflict will ultimately require.

The usual timeless techniques proven to work:

Bankrupt and disappear the worst ones. The others will catch a clue and behave for a while.

Jefferson spoke of watering the Tree of Liberty from time to time because he was not for total war, but the classic Roman decimation.

Other regimes not only killed the trouble maker, but his offspring so that they would not avenge; then the hardcore would wipe out the entire family, the neighbors, the guy who made his sandwich, the other who mended his shirt - to send a message.

That level of death would signal others that even associating with a trouble-maker would result in their own death.

We sure as heck don't need to go there, and I pray that very few even have the stomach for that level of play.

I would settle for a few high profile trials, and disappear some of the lieutenants.

Trump is a measuring device.

Trump-hate is a "spectrum disorder."

I think a lot of people are going to be making some major realizations in the coming days.

I realized the Democrats are going to steal the election, no matter what the results. They and their partners in the Fake News have already decided that Trump is out.

If you watched Ted Cruz last night on youtube, you'll understand there's really nothing we can do to stop the Democrats from stealing the Executive Branch of government in broad daylight short of a full-fledged revolution. We will not have any relief from the courts. Not even the Court will fulfill their duty honestly, I suspect.

Unless there is an absolute landslide, we will not know (the Fake News will refuse to acknowledge) the results for several weeks, lending way to more chaos and cheating and then perhaps a concocted "Constitutional crisis" in which the Democrats simply decide who is president. But the way things appear to be forming, votes, or "votes," will continue pouring in for many weeks after election day. Counting will not end until Democrats have "won."

There are zero "moderate" (D)s nationally anymore, are there? If you don't support killing black babies you're not going to be a (D) politician at the national level.

165 I restate what I wrote this morning:

I'm reading through "The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious" by Carl Jung, and came across two quotes that seem strikingly appropriate to this day in age.

"Myths, on the contrary, have a vital meaning. Not merely do they represent, they are the psychic life of the primitive tribe, which immediately falls to pieces and decays when it loses its mythological heritage, like a man who has lost his soul. A tribe's mythology is its living religion, whose loss is always and everywhere, even among the civilized, a moral catastrophe."

"Our progressiveness, though it may result in a great many delightful wish-fulfilments, piles up an equally gigantic Promethean debt which has to be paid off from time to time in the form of hideous catastrophes. For ages man has dreamed of flying, and all we have got for it is saturation bombing! We smile today at the Christian hope of a life beyond the grave, and yet we often fall into chiliasms a hundred times more ridiculous than the notion of a happy Hereafter."

The culture war is as much a war of myths, and their associated symbols. The left wants to tear down the myths associated with the "American" tribe so as to replace them with its own myths. But the technocrats, globalists, and bureaucrats who make up neoliberalism are so psychologically off-balance, so out of touch with some of the more primitive parts of their psyches, that those parts come crashing back in ugly new forms. Hence, the BLM riots we see today, which operate more like religious rituals. Or, the obsession with somehow transforming one's identity from man to woman or to something altogether different. Or, the bizarre views towards sex which turn it into some sort of strange ritual.

179 I'm a retired LEO and have a MA from a Christian seminary. With my free time and education I have filled in for my Pastor when he went on vacation, etc... We've been very close.

Some time ago, I preached for him, and mentioned, for about 15 seconds, the strange times we are in, with the rioting, looting and the CHAZ/CHOP thing. He called me in to lecture me on my lack of sensitivity, how as a retired LEO I should have had more to speak into the George Floyd situation and so on.

At one point he explained that MLK noted that "you are either part of the problem or part of the solution." He then decided to counsel me on things I could do to become more sensitive to the Black struggle.

I realized that he and I operate in different universes, and that, apparently he sees me as a racist, or at a minimum, "as part of the problem."

The work I did, was to give him some support, the opportunity to be relieved of some of the burdens of his office. No more.

I refuse to live by lies, or to assent to the lies of others.

If that's what we get despite 10+ years of work and friendship, then I don't think that we can fix this peacefully.

He wrote something after last nights RNC that essentially said anyone who supports PDT has serious moral issues and many things to answer for.

That tears it. I wish him well in his life.

His very words display the mindset. He stands in moral judgement over anyone who does not agree with his politics. And he thinks he is right to do so. He thinks it is his obligation to do so.

Its the same as "hate" crimes. The crime is the crime, but whoever decides on the definition of hate gets to stand in judgement.
So no disagreement, no discussion of fact, no rational analysis. His (leftist) morals trump (no pun intended) everything else.

Fine. But as I totally reject this judgement, I guess I'll see him and his followers in the streets.

This was willowed last thread, but it's relevant since its about the power of personal contact.
As anyone in sales can tell you,

person-to-person contact is what holds humans together. It's

indefinable, but its why there's a jury system, and meet-up groups, and

support groups. Strength feeds on strength, faith feeds on faith.
We're all the better for these contacts, and that's exactly why

the left wants us isolated, muzzled and six feet apart.

187 This isn't about how we perceive facts, it's about how we determine 'truth'.

They perceive truth as revelatory, and they search the objective world in order to find justification for their revelation. We perceive the truth as a product of reason, and search the objective world for evidence to support our malleable conclusion.

Our method requires conversation and debate - who among us knows 'the whole truth'? Their method prohibits debate, and views is as heretical and contradictory.

The rest is just motivated reasoning. We both assume the other group is 'thinking' the same way we are, so to us they become 'deranged' and to them, we become 'evil'.

190 People are flawed, have differences, we used to learn to deal with theirs and our own. Most people lived and learned, tried to understand what they could have done differently. Those who didn't live miserable lives.

I see a whole generation of broken people who were medicated with ritalin, given "grievance counseling" for something that didn't even happen to them. They were told that everyone is wonderful and entitled. They were told they could have anything they want.

Now they're into physical adulthood yet they can't grasp why their relationships come apart, why that guy/girl doesn't want them anymore, why they didn't get this job or that promotion. They get vicious when their favorite team loses. They were conditioned to react by screaming and anger when they didn't get what they wanted, and never learned to deal with setbacks that are inevitable.

To paraphrase Morgan Freeman in Shawshank Redemption;

"I'd like to tell you that Brenda and Eddie lived happily ever after, but Real Life is no fairy tail world"

192 It really is a conundrum.

The left believes their violence is free speech, and my free speech is violence.

Despite actual evidence of voter fraud in 2016 in favor of Hillary Clinton, they refuse to accept the results of an election, and try every possible route to derail the legitimate government of the United States, and yet they claim Trump and his supporters are the illegitimate ones.

They send armed thugs to intimidate, burn, loot and murder in cities where their intellectual soul mates in DA and mayoral offices will not prosecute their crimes, and yet they scream on their party networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, et al) that Trump and his supporters are the criminals.

I have come to the conclusion that there is no reasoning with the left. They need to be not only defeated, but shamed into non existence. And that is the best option for their fate, assuming they don't try to go further than they have. Otherwise, all bets are off.

Turning point was the night McCain won the nomination. I knew it was over then because right then, it was McCain, Hillary or Obama. Three slightly different lefty death sentences. The problem is McCain's only real challenge came from Romney so you could argue it goes back before that. But if you play that game you have to go back to Papa Bush and, yes, his ominous New World Order.

But just think about our Top 4 Choices in 2008, think about how they never really went away, how 2012 was Romney-Obama and 2016 was going to be Clinton-Bush... and ask yourself how the hell we EVER survived.

How it took a crass loudmouth New York celebrity to be the voice of freedom and of the unborn. And ask yourself how the hell all of it ever even happened.

244 You can't reason with a person who is intellectually dishonest. The problem with a lot of today's Leftist agenda is its indefensible from a reasoned, factual outcome standpoint. In the end, it forces the liberal defender to admit that liberty, freedom, independent thought or materially good outcomes are not a consideration. Some may admit that, most will not. So they demur, dissemble or outright lie.

Through the Enlightenment and other periods of discovery the search for knowledge was always characterized as a search for the truth, or in Latin, veritas. That's because long ago mankind determined the path of truth and honesty leads to good outcomes. It's how most social mores, the mores these troglodytes are trying to tear down today, were developed. Through truth, discovery and beneficial outcomes. That process leads us, by trial and error, to what the best path is. We aren't bad people because of the way some of these mores and practices were developed. Or perhaps better put, some of those ideas were proven bad because people with terrible intentions heralded them. We (and I use that term lightly) were ignorant and ergo discovered that was not the path to take, so we adjusted and moved on.

The grievance peddlers of today are not interested in the truth because they know it leads to failure, their egos are too big to admit it, or their desires have a basis in mischief and evil.

With that in mind, we are two different people's. One pursuing the greater good and the other, evil. You can't reconcile those two, you can only realize the motives of those who support evil and separate from them. In history, sometimes evil wins, but it is never enduring. That's because it feeds on itself and is destined for destruction. Human nature is to live free in pursuit of the truth. That fact is as old as mankind itself.

The majority of them will know next year, when their agent tells them their high multi-year contract is not guaranteed and they have been cut.

And then the good ones get re-signed at 50 cents on the dollar.

Heh.

259 The media is to blamed for all of this--the media and Obama/Hillary. Because they all hated Trump they HAD to create and go all-in on Russia Collusion. Because only by making their political enemy an actual traitor in league with a despotic state, could they justify the hatred they threw at him for four years.

They started this the very NIGHT of the election when Hillary refused to come down to meet her supporters and the maniacal Podesta appeared shouting "THIS is NOT OVER!! We'll have MORE to say tomorrow!"

If they had let up--and Pelosi and Schumer had tried to work with him, the Union would be in a much beyter place today.

This makes the Democrats weak,

They have nothing else.

No idea, no plans no platform other than their personal power.

They will con these kids so their rich elites and celebrities can keep making the cheap buck off of the poor people laboring in China.

I know this will sound cockeyed, but if more people watched Biden, it may be that more people were curious about Biden. Especially on our side. The people who don't like Trump had little reason to tune in, while we all tuned in to watch the car crash.

The numbers COULD be bad news for us unless,, say, people didn't like what they saw from Biden, in which case a flattening or trough in his polling numbers would show up.

But then of courese the Lying Liars Who Lie would have to come up with a cover story for that, like "the violent riots are suddenly hurting our polling numbers".

The leader of the group is pro-Trump, but doesn't bring the topic up; the third member is a retired lady who does not like Trump, but does not want to see socialism and Communism in America. (I told her, "That's okay. We didn't hire Trump to be our buddy. We hired him to protect America.")

So the other two are okay. The first fellow, he's old enough to know socialism and Communism don't work, he was in Vietnam and saw the results of it first hand, but he still thinks Bernie "has the right idea" and that Trump "is out to enrich his friends the fat cats." Exact quotes.

So when he sent me a Chinese propaganda video purporting to prove that the Chinese response to COVID was "the right way to go," I sent him the link to the White Coat Summit video -- but I haven't engaged since then. I don't need it.

If all three of them are hipped on the mask bit, I don't want to deal with that either. It's a shame; I'll miss 'em; it's been a good and very useful group. But I don't need the stress.

279 Two things:

Passion clouds reason, and these are very passionate times, so it is unreasonable to expect others to be reasonable. Wait for the passions to cool.

Second, faith is a cycle: beliefs colors our interaction in the world, which lead to more experience, which potentially challenge our beliefs. When a person replaces religion with politics, they are still engaging in a set of organizing principles, accepted on faith, that bring meaning to one's life. And it's just as devastating when reality intrudes on a person's faith to an extent where they are no longer able to reconcile their faith with reality. When this crisis of faith renders our beliefs incompatible with reality one of 2 things happens: We either 1) become despondent and conclude our faith was wrong so the complete opposite must be true (you used to see this in a lot in anti-communists who were former communists like David Horowitz) or 2) we conclude the world were our faith is non-operational is just too scary to accept, so we double down on faith and develop cognitive dissonance in order to dismiss the parts of reality we reject.

We know racism is responsible for every bad thing that happens to black so if they are looting, well obviously proves slavery must justify looting.

Posted by: dagny, first of her name at August 28, 2020 04:01 PM (ySQBZ)

Cognitive behavioral therapy - they need to change their behaviors so their thinking changes. This usually occurs as a result of a shock to their systems be it joyous or tragic- the birth of a child or a personal trauma can change their brain chemistry and how the world is perceived - the change in perceptions changes their behaviors. But they need to be in a place (socially, physically) where the new behaviors can be routed through the reward (or fear) circuitry and then cemented.

Think about BF Skinner. We are all undergoing fear conditioning right now but we have choices about how to respond to it. The LW you see do not have the coping mechanisms nor appropriate social support systems to properly respond to the fear the media is piling on them- so they submit and join in.

This is one of the reasons we come here & why these hilarious memes are so important.

305 I had an epiphany today. Against my better judgment, I got into it with a high school acquaintance on Facebook over the shooting in Kenosha with that kid in the street. My HS relation is 100% convinced the kid is a domestic terrorist. I merely pointed out that the video evidence this far available to public makes a pretty strong argument for self defense. Mind you, I wasn't saying the kid has no culpability or that he can't be charged with something else, I just said the kid has a pretty solid case to make that it's not murder.

The amount of vitriol that followed was...depressing. It's as if some people in this world can't even entertain the possibility that there are people in this world that can have different opinions about the same event. I have my doubts they'll be able to accept the outcome of any criminal case that doesn't fit their internal narrative, let alone a national election.

This is not going to end well.

306 Nothing incorrect in Coleman's essay - I've checked his twatters for a long time, when something legal-ish is afoot where he's got expertise, so he's not a new name.

But as with most things, over-determined.

He mentions the problem with false factual premises.

That's the actual end of the analysis. He tries to dress up his acquaintances' inability to base their thinking on actual facts, but he was done when got to that point.

Not a fan of intellectual fiddle-faddle, or as Marx put it about Feuerbach, "theoretical bubble-blowing".

If someone is proceeding from a false premise in, say, a discussion of designing a bridge, or painting a wall, or pricing a product - then there's really no meaningful discussion after that.

"Politics" is a key escape-word, a euphemism, for "this is sports, or wine-tasting, it's entirely personal taste, that's it, no substance or facts to discuss".

There might be a gulf on values or whatever term Coleman uses up above, but it's academic, and one doesn't even get there. If they won't deal with reality, and facts, and actual history, then there's nothing to their point of view, it's not serious.

This is so true.

I've changed my mind on so many things, and what you mention above are only a few of them.

I believed in the Gulf War, for instance. Still do, but I now believe that if we go to war in the future, you go in the way the Romans did. Anything else is half-measuring it. If you can't go Roman, don't go in at all.

I thought that the military was above reproach, once. Now, I know that they can be just as swampy as the most corrupt Teamsters union boss.

Same with the CIA. I laughed at their portrayals in movies like Three Days of the Condor as a kid growing up in the 70s, but I think with Crossfire Hurricane and Russia 'collusion', I'm not laughing as hard now.

So, yes. I'm open to changing my mind as circumstances and evidence present themselves. I really don't think that's the case with the Leftists that I know, however.

317 So much I can relate to here.
I am also dropping friends--or maybe they are dropping me? I had two work friends. We were the Three Amigos. Then Trump got elected. They said crazy things. They badmouthed the whole country. They revealed themselves. I see this ugliness on FB and so I put everyone on restricted list. Also, when I had a bad accident a while ago it was my unfashionable conservative friends who cared about me--the lefties were too busy loving humanity to care about me. Like that old song "easy to be hard".

Also I have a few relatives that are very well educated professionals and they sound like antifa street thugs. I skipped Thanksgiving 2016, and now I avoid them on FB and in real life too. When I saw what they wrote during covid, I was depressed for a week.

I literally cannot stand the never ending tsunami of hatred. It's wearing me down.

I also don't think the country as we know it will last. Trump will be reelected but that won't be enough time, and our side doesn't look close enough at the sources of our conflicts or fight. My younger relatives and their kids have been completely brainwashed in their top tier educations. Our future leaders.

320 It is very difficult to think independently, to think honestly. So many people are hardwired to accept whatever their peer group accepts, that's how they define "moral". These are the people who would go Nazi, or go Commie, or go whatever way the winds of their peer groups are blowing.

No matter how "intellectual" they may pretend to be, they do not have the capability of independent moral thought.

You can tolerate these people, even be friendly on the surface in peacetime. But you can never trust these people.

326 Wow, yesterday at my doctor's office. He's my age, Jewish, an Angelino, an intellectually bright, honest guy. We've become "friends" ( reason behind scare quotes in a moment) and have socialized together for several years. We were discussing the riots. He said, "these people have paid consultants" in reference to the Democrats and their embrace of the violence. I nodded and he went on about it and near the end it dawned on me: he didn't care about the horror and ethics at all, just the poor tactics.

On the drive home, I realized I never pushed back on that point and felt constrained in doing so. Why? And then it occurred to me I never had challenged him as vigorously as I wanted in the past because he almost assuredly would have become mad and angry. That isn't a friendship at all. I expect this is happening a lot. He's not among my closest friends but one I valued.

Maybe experienced Portland rioters. I think the crowd was seeded with these extremists to create an example for some others who might "go along".

But even a true believer is unlikely to physically push back against police. Some, who still have a soul, might even feel bad about seeing a thug shouting "F you" and flipping the bird a foot away from a tiny, old white haired lady just walking to her hotel.

If the left wins I know that somewhere after my time comes I'll be looking down and feeling bad for this generation when it dawns on them that whatever worth their parents intended to leave to them will be scooped up by the state to fund the causes they are now so fond of... "Its not fair" will be the new pledge of allegiance. I know several 60 plus folks like me who are struggling with same dilemmas regarding kids. Being silent is not being complacent - just biding time until the earthquake on 3 Nov I am praying for happens. Our own kids may despise us but as good parents we should strive to win a battle we know will benefit our kids even if never acknowledged...
Those who have parents born in the thirties have seen them depart this life with no gratitude for doing the right thing in raising us to treat people equally even as it cost them friends and colleagues who were of the old segregationist mindset and yes sometimes even job opportunities. Now as their children we are being told the day in day out incremental acts of kindness and fair treatment exercised over a lifetime mean nothing because we are privileged. That it comes from our own children is the difference from our parents generation.

359 293 The issue is that for the left, politics is religious faith. They believe with their heart and soul, and their "truths" cannot be questioned, because to question those "truths" is to question the people holding them. And they cannot bear under the questioning.
Posted by: BeckoningChasm at August 28, 2020 04:14 PM (E+OcO)

And even people who don't agree with them are beginning to fall in line as if they live in an oppressive religious state. They know that if they "blaspheme" then they'll be forced to repent or be excommunicated so they publicly declare their faith and submission hoping that will never happen.

The thing is that most religions have a (mostly) consistent and widely-known set of rules. The Left's religion has no systematic theology, it's just whatever the left happens to believe that day.

Perhaps that's because it's a religion without a god. Or, perhaps that it's because the religion itself is their god, like Leninism, Stalinism, Maoism etc.

373 I struggle with this.

There are a number of people who I have considered close friends, but I simply can't understand how they can have the political views they have. The BLM knee-jerk acceptance they all whites (including themselves) as racist was a literal shock to me.

I have spent the last 5 months disengaging from a lot of people, hoping that maybe after the election is over we can get back in touch. But I doubt that it is possible. I fear that that something in their psyche will break when Trump wins again. They seem to be clinging to the hope that 2016 was an aberration. OrangeManBad winning again will fracture them, and they won't have a path back that lets them be friends with a Trump supporter ever.

This is one of the big reasons that I (and I suspect many others) won't put up signs or bumperstickers or public posts on Facebook. We want to be able to have relationships with people we have valued in the past, and don't want to burn bridges. But these days, they probably know where I stand anyway, because I won't publicly profess my subjugation to BLM.

Forget Hillary, Pelosi and Schumer - I lay all this at the feet of Al Gore.

Nixon knew very well that the 1960 election was stolen from him, but for the good of the country he held his fire.

Al Gore, on the basis of nothing, torched a long-standing tradition of respecting the results on Election Night, and put us on this path 20 years ago.

He doesn't get nearly as much opprobrium as he deserves. For that, and for mainstreaming the Climate Change Hysteria.

The NYPD endorsement gave them excellent cover; they're no longer worried Trump will take their pensions ( I have no idea where that came from) and I believe they'll vote Trump in November.

But even if they don't, I love them, and nothing will change that.

Conservatives try to make their Perception, mesh with Reality. We will change our minds.

The other side, tries to change objective reality, into what they want to perceive.

Exhibit 1? Global Warming. They literally went back and CHANGED historic temperature records, when the actual data did not fit their desired outcome.

Exhibit 2? Covid. Tests are not accurate. Deaths are attributed to it without it being the cause of death. And they PUT Seniors into harms way by forcing them into nursing homes who were to equipped to handle Isolating Patients. Literally CREATED the pandemic.

Michael Chritton, years ago, wrote 'State of Fear' about using false data, to create a panic, to gain power.

He was NOT prophetic, he just recognized it early.

Speaking of Crichton, CNN did a puff piece on our company in the past year.

Way back in the day, our company wanted to film some work we were doing on small scale aqueous solution polymerization to produce polyacrylonitrile copolymers. Fine. Day comes for the filming and the recording crew comes into our lab, looks at our setup -- reagent vessels, the reactor, and the filtration system -- and asks, "Where are the chemicals?" "Here, here, and here," we said. "No. Why aren't they colored?" was the rejoinder. Matters went downhill from there and I do not recall whether anything ultimately was filmed.

383 Yeah, it's hard to see how one can coexist with people who seriously think that black people are at significant risk of getting shot by the cops, as opposed to other black people. Over four hundred black people have been killed in Chicago this year - I believe that not a single black person has been killed by the cops.

When you take Lebron James seriously when he says is scared to leave his house, lest he be the subject of random violence from white people.

When you think that it is prima-facie evidence of racism when the people the Portland cops have arrested at the riots are 11% black, when Portland is only 6% black.

When you think that I don't own the land under my house, because it is "stolen land".

When you say that Trump is literally Hitler, when you don't live in the slightest fear of the 2 AM knock at the door.

And on, and on, and on.

401 The culture war is as much a war of myths, and their associated symbols.

Suddenly we men in the group, who had always been valued colleagues before, were misogynists because we were suggesting that HRC was not really qualified (and in my case, that HRC was an unindicted criminal. I didn't bring up the topic, she did, but I wasn't going to back down).

She decided to "take a break" from the group, and has never gotten in touch with us since.

421 There were warning signs. I myself being a reformed never Trumper. When after the election, the "reasonable" people who demanded after Obama's election, that for the time being, and in deference to a peaceful transfer of power, that we lay the campaign aside and take a look at the Obama presidency with fresh eyes, and no prejudices based on his campaign. In other words, let him actually govern first, with some benefit of the doubt, before we went into epic oppose mode.

These same voices that urged that end for an avowed political opponent, were first in line to not extend the same benefit to Trump in the days following the election. That's when I realized how bad a mistake I had made, and the extent (meaning the number of people I had trusted) I had been lied to.

Slowly TDS started to claim people I knew and respected. His politics for what I can see was a good cable length shy of really conservative, putting him at a "RIGHT-CENTER" position. Yet he was decried as being reactionary. I liked the phrase I heard here, "Extreme Moderate" which I think describes Trump the best. Yet despite being only moderately conservative in political inclination the TDS made people act like he was the worst thing to happen to the US, all the while I am surprisingly happy with his actual choices made in office.

I quickly grew away from the Never Trump mindset. But the trail of division did not stop. The left became outright communist, the non-Trump right became outright socialist, leaving a Constitutional Conservative in a lurch. How much longer could ideologies totally foreign and adverse to the concept of a Constitutional Republic be borne by the same? I started seriously to question the future of the nation, whether it could go on.

My Epiphany so to speak came with Kaepernik. Not that he did it, stupid people do stupid things, but how the left rejoiced in it and how soon the "appropriateness" of it became an essential value to the left. Sports in general and the national anthem in particular are items that unify as one people, one country, transcendent of politics, cultural touch points that put peoples with opposing political views and even ideologies together as a single people. The politicization of sports being bad, but the politicization of the anthem, a last vestige where we openly gesture that we are one people, one country, now being divided in politics was the death knell.

If a people are unwilling to make even a vestigial gesture that they are a single united people, then....they aren't. When the left fully embraced the new norm of politicizing the anthem, I knew then, there was no future of a free unified United States. Either the free or unified was going to have to go at some point in the next few years.

If you can no longer look your political opponents in the eye and see a good person, a countryman, with whom you share political bonds as much as differences, working together in good faith for a better country, once that is gone, it's only a matter of time before separation, or war begins.

What's done is done, now we have to resist subjugation to domestic enemies and then create something worthwhile out of the ashes of the greatest country to ever exist.

Is that leveling up in basedness?

430 If anybody gets a proper epiphany, he is no longer a conservative.

Conservatives are losers. And cucks. Every 5 years they adopt the liberals ideas that have aged 5 years. Conservatives are liberals in slow motion. If you like to lose, and like to lose often, then do go ahead and proudly state your conservative bona fides.

See Charlie Kirk running around with queers and drag queens and calling it "conservative" Conservatives can't even "conserve" little girls' bathrooms.

I've been driven to Fascism. There is no other way of saving this republic from the dark hordes who demand I bend my knee and give them my house, even while they've been draining our treasury since Hart-Celler Act of 1965. Wait - you don't know what that is?

I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you.

432 If we had pushed back as hard as we were pushed a long time ago, it might have erupted into civil war even back then. Then again, it might have resolved peacefully. We thought since we were the adults in the room it was up to us to stay composed and maintain peace. Foolish us. We now are in a position where we either continue to be pushed to the point of surrender or we refuse and war erupts without prospect of peace.

I think one of the one of the reasons Trump is so hated is the Left knew he might represent the end of them being able to push without a conflagration. So did the Never Trumpers who surrendered a long time back.

While no one can say for certain, it is likely now Trump will be reelected and the results will not be honored. So we either will join with Never Trump or war ensues. It is horrible.

Oh, if Teddy had been President in 1914, he would have gotten the US into WWI (The Great War) asap. He wanted to get into it. He knew Germany and German culture very well (he spoke passingly good German and had lived in Germany as a teen ager).
He wanted to fight the Hun.

There was a lot to admire about Teddy, but he did set the pattern for the aggressive modern 20th Century Big State.

434 Oh, totally FUCK this bullshit about this country being no longer viable.

The country's bedrock is yet solid as ever--all that which made us exceptional is unchanged--the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, and especially our form of government--the most unique in history--ALL of it is there.

Our problem is the filth laid on it by the left obscures and prevents it's proper function.

Cleanse that filth and smash the left into oblivion and the bulk of the problems will disappear.

But falsely conceding defeat at the outset will be self fulfilling.

I wore the uniform and took that oath as so many others have done so fulfilling it would be a good legacy to leave.I mean to do just that, however it works out.

436 Modern-day liberals are laboring under a lot of cognitive dissonance; while hard-left anarcho-totalitarian freak-a-zoids often seem much happier and at peace with themselves, actually.

This isn't new. I noticed it all the time growing up in what is arguably the home base of airhead, knee-jerk, mass-broadcast liberalism, western Los Angeles.

Conservatives can be ignorant of reality too. It comes from the environment you place yourself in. I remember thinking the 2003 Iraq War was probably a good idea, on balance. It was just a value judgment, not empirically found. So, the good news is judgment of values can be refined over time, I guess?

Posted by: Swamposphere at August 28, 2020 05:28 PM (lPDqu)

438 The tragic irony is that all these woke leftists screaming about Trump and his supporters being nazis are in fact the ones acting and thinking like lock-step fascists. Trump is their version of the Orwell's Goldstein for the 2 Minute Hate.

439 My epiphany was last September, when they started calling us terrorists. One of my friends said he felt safer around ghetto thugs than around MAGAs. (that's a guy whose kids have been attacked TWICE, with guns, by ghetto thugs, BTW.) My other friends were too stupid to notice or care what's going on. And I realized that I didn't want to be around any of my "friends" anymore.

Since then, I simply don't engage with people IRL at all, except for purely transactional people like cashiers. I told ALL my friends to fuck off, and turned into a complete hermit.

So for eleven months, it's just me, my cats, the internet, and ham radio (digital modes only; no conversations.) Only one other person has been in my home in all that time, an old friend who dropped in by surprise; but he is so mentally damaged (literally demented; don't ask) that within twenty minutes, he realized he wasn't welcome and left.

It's only going to get worse, no matter who wins 2020.

BTW, thanks Ace for condensing Coleman's thread from those god-awful Twitter boxes.

But, like, I'm an average dude and I understood and accepted this years ago. I'm not sure what the tipping point was, maybe it was the 60s and we just got a brief stay, maybe it was 08, but it was certainly before 16. I remember being physically kicked--not to be funny but in anger--by a woman in a bar when I told her I was voting W. And that was socially acceptable in that time and place, her friends restrained her but everyone just shrugged it off. I laughed about it and still don't really care except as a demonstrative regarding the duration of deranged behavior toward those who fail to support the progressive candidate. Weird time to be alive man.

442 "What has really hurt me was losing the church I went to, but that was four years ago. I woke up post election and had to listen to the vitriol of TDS from fellow choir members, the choir director, the priest - it was just horrible. So I left. But God is faithful, because now my husband is attending church with me for the first time in 26 years of marriage! Now we are searching for a new church, since COVID has basically shut down the one we were attending."

Satrose if you are still around, and if I understand correctly that you are Catholic, I cannot recommend either a Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) parish if one is in your area, and failing that an eastern Catholic parish like a Maronite, Ukrainian, or Ruthenian rite church. The latter vary in quality, as do TLM parishes, and I know many people find the Latin alien or impenetrable but it grows on almost everyone quickly. TLM parishes tend to be overwhelmingly conservative. Plus, you almost invariably get catechesis/faith formation of a quality you've never remotely experienced anywhere else and almost all TLM parishes have remained open in spite of COVID. If you're looking for support in your faith look up sermons by Fr. Phil Wolfe on Youtube.

For Catholics, the TLM is the ultimate leveling up to being based. It's just what our Holy Mother Church practiced for over 1500 years.

443 [Anybody] "...Has an Epiphany..?"

To be honest I never needed to have one. I was a Liberal in the '60s and noticed a change in what is considered today 'Classical Liberalism'. What we have here today is 'Classical Facism' of the Marxist style - ala Orwell's 1984 variety. I've always knew down the road Liberals where heading for a car pileup. Only the weak among them will remain and they will finally have the "Epiphany" when they come for them and their families.

447 There is no splitting the country in two. The left will never relent. They will continue attacking us and indoctrinating our future generations. They must be forced to live among us and be demoralized and boycotted into submission.

Posted by: Brisco_County_Sr at August 28, 2020 06:42 PM (DBPIP)

448 I don't see how we split because of geography.
- Cities maybe 80% Democratic
- Suburbs maybe 55% Democratic
- Rural areas 65% Republican?
How can you make that split?

I think we just have to fight it out politically and physically. If the Democrats keep acting crazy they drive people out of the cities and turn the country from 50/50 to maybe 55/45. Then Republicans make big gains and Democrats have to change if they want to stay in power. They can hold onto the cities without changing, but that will just force them into a narrower and narrower coalition and eventually they'll have to break and start acting sane.

I know you can't argue with them now. But if they lose and the media wants the Democrats back in power, they'll need to start being sensible. E.g., the NY Times presenting a somewhat truthful article about the shooting in Kenosha. If they want to, they can easily start steering the Democrats back to sanity.

454 To paraphrase the late great John Paul Jones: We have not yet begun to fight.
America isn't dead. There are too many loyal daughters and sons of liberty willing to stand up to the mobs (and take up arms if necessary).
There's no power behind the rioters - look what happens every time someone stands up to them. They run. The cops move in and they tuck tail and run, screaming about their rights. Some private citizens stand up to them and what happens? The black-clad children get beat down and run out of town.

The looters are mostly opportunistic thieves who seize on a chance to grab armloads of whatever's available. They're common criminals and should be dealt with as such.
I don't understand why some of these people aren't being prosecuted under RICO statutes. I think they qualify.

I'm a ham, also. While I do understand the desire to completely go hermit, it's not generally a healthy thing for humans - we are, at our root, social creatures.

Not necessarily gregarious, but social. Try connecting in non-digital ways - voice on radio, in person at your local gun range, etc. If your church is too Left, find another one - they are around (if you are Catholic, like I am, you may have to find a TLM - Traditional Latin Mass).

At least, keep in touch here. And, try Parler.com - Ace of Spades is there, among others. SOME connection with social media - if not excessive - may help with the feeling of isolation.

461 The reason for that is simple. Thomas Jefferson told us all back in 1776.

"Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security"

463 I had the epiphany long ago, in a galaxy far far away. I was in grade 11 and my parents hosted a gathering for the local Conservative candidate in the upcoming election. I got into a discussion with 2 of the 'marketing/PR' guys for the candidate. They were shocked by some of the things I said about policy. It took them quite a while to realize that (to use a newer formulation) 'Attila the Hun is a wet'. (oh, I now retired. It was that long ago).

I have had, recently, however, different epiphany, regarding 'changing human nature'. Most of the outbursts and the reactions of the crazy left are the result of MALIGNANT NARCISSISM. And I, for one, am firmly convinced that that mental disorder was implanted /inculcated / caused by the teaching of moral relativism in school, coupled with 'feelings' and catch-phrases such as 'equality'.

If you believe that everything you think is "truth" and that you are *always correct* and *smarter* than everyone around you, then of course, any reaction to you, is violence. It is a closed cycle.

The 'educational establishment' has a lot to answer for, in respect of its malfeasances since the mid-70's.
