Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Minimalist EditionOne of the many things the pandemic has taught us is that the phrase “the common sense of the American people,” so beloved by politicians on the stump, needs to be dropped off a bridge. Anyone relying on the common sense of the American people is leaning on air. This is a serious allegation, as Mr. Wolcott well knows, schooled as he was before classrooms were overrun by Education Professionals. The American experiment in liberty ultimately depends, we were once taught, on the judgment of its citizens. We the people needn’t be Aristotles to elect wise representatives, but our Founders recognized that a nation of fools can only ever be counted on to elect slightly more clever fools. Clever intellectuals certainly play a valuable role in society. If I want an insightful countercultural observation or a snappy turn of phrase, I’ll happily turn to James Wolcott, whose writing I’ve always enjoyed. But as for how to live a life, I believe I’ll stick to the wisdom of my people out here in the sticks. It’s gotten us this far, and from the looks of things in New York City, I dare say we’re doing all right, despite having not a single Vanity Fair writer in our midst.Being glib, or, if you prefer, articulate, is not an indicator of intelligence. Direct your attention to any one of 50 TV news pundits for proof. Being critical and dismissive of others is not an indicator of intelligence or sophistication. It is however a powerful indicator of being an asshole. I have spent most of my life in and around blue cities, and yet the number of impressive interactions with strangers is dwarfed when compared to my time in "flyover country." And why is that? Because those elites, who are overwhelmingly to the left, have accepted the progressive cant that humanity is fungible, that we have no spark of the divine in us, that we are lumps of protoplasm that can be interchanged with any other. We are not individuals, we are simply the herd, and can be dismissed as such without any thought. That way lies North Korea and Cuba and Venezuela and the gulags and the concentration camps, so I will happily accept the judgement of America's common sense over the pontifications of the elites. Big OT:
In my local news this AM, I see Exelon has decided to shut down the Byron, IL nuclear generating station next year, for financial reasons I guess. A few decades ago, I had the great good luck to be invited to join the station's SALP 3 inspection tour with the NRC. At that time, reactor 1 was online, and reactor 2 was due to start soon. I was amazed at the massive equipment and the meticulous documentation of every pipe and valve, and even tiny sealed holes in the walls had long serial numbers on them. I stood on top of the head of reactor 2, an unbelievably large stainless steel machined casting with dozens of huge stainless bolts ringing it. I climbed many many ladders. I visited the control room, with thousands of green lights on the unit 1 side, and thousands of red lights on the not-yet-started unit 2 side. It took a lot of brains and money to build this. As far as I know, this 2GW station has operated completely safely for these decades, providing carbon-free electricity to the distribution network. The station was expected to run for at least another 20 years. Perhaps I am not informed enough to opine, but I think we need this station to keep running for the clean energy it provides. Of course, another concern will be the loss of many hundreds of jobs, which undoubtedly helped the nice town of Byron to thrive. Anyway, I pass this info along to The Horde in the expectation that you will find the story interesting. If you live near a plant like this, likely they offer public tours from time to time, and you ought to check it out. You won't see as much as I did on the SALP inspection, but you will be quite impressed by what you do see. Posted by: gp, Hooping Fentanyl Again at August 27, 2020 11:06 AM (qpX6U) 27

I think studies have demonstrated deplorables travel more and thus have actually seen more of the world than big city elitists. It's hard to travel a lot when your paycheck goes to paying the rent on your one bedroom basement apartment.
Small town conservatives are also better read than those elitists. They are also more likely to be familiar with liberals and the way they think than the reverse. IMO, common sense isn't something you're born with. In my case, I had to see and hear it before I caught on. Then a new world opened up before me and I never looked back.
It seems as though there are many forces arrayed in the world designed to keep us from finding the source of this common sense and navigating through them is a big challenge. But if you find it, that's the reward. It is the Light upon your path that shows you where to step. Posted by: BackwardsBoy - who still wants a pony at August 27, 2020 11:10 AM (HaL55) 46
It is elitism; pure and simple, and it is misplaced. As a thoroughly unscientific sample, my experience is that if you want to be snubbed and treated rudely and hear all sorts of jingoistic blather about pretty much every topic of import, then spend some time in the blue cities and their suburbs. But if you want to be treated kindly and with compassion and without reference to your skin color or religion or politics, then head to Middle America.
++++++++++ By degrees, yes. But there is also an East/West aspect to it as well. The snobbish elitism in San Francisco or LA, for example, is outrageous but much better hidden in my experience than it is in New York or in Boston. Boston is America's most unfriendly, elitist and arrogant city in my experience. I had the same experience in both New York and Boston, and it taught be that Bostonians are actually the rude ones. New Yorkers are just in a hurry. I needed to find a subway station. I asked a man on the street in NY and he barked out directions and hurried on. In Boston, though, two separate people took the time to stop, look me in the eye, and tell me to go fuck myself. The third person laced into me for being stupid - but did give me directions. That level of rudeness doesn't exist out west in my experience. On that coast, they talk bad about you behind your back at their parties. They are already discussing demands to make during THE GENERAL STRIKE. The NHL has a unique opportunity - they may yet buckle and join the "boycott", but if they don't, and they are the only league still functioning, they are going to get an enormous amount of new fan support from people disgusted with the other leagues. I've been wondering for a long time - this county used to be racist against all sorts of groups. Irish, Japanese, Chinese. Anyone see any Irish or Japanese racism lately? It doesn't exist. What happened?
Those groups got rich and joined the elite. So racism doesn't cause poor economic performance of a group, poor economic performance of a group causes racism. Because racism = elitism. Posted by: El Kabong at August 27, 2020 11:18 AM (8Xxh3) 108

I read 'The Lawrenceville Stories' by Owen Johnson this year. It's set in pre-WW 1 boy's boarding school. In addition to the fun and humor of the pranks and characters of the stories, it is sort of a struggle with elitism.
The boys of the boarding school are being groomed to BE the elite (especially later, at Yale in 'Stover at Yale' by the same author). Some of them ARE elite, but even then, there's a big problem of those who are not but who are going to be treated as such because of who they are friends with, where they went to school, etc. Owen Johnson comes down, somewhat reluctantly, on the pro-elite side...but only when the elite truly are smarter, more noble, more honest than the average. I'm more cynical. I don't believe in empowering people until they prove themselves. I'm for mandatory term limits or even for drafting politicians and beaucrats by random lottery. Well, left-wing Portland Reddit is all excited at the sportsball leagues closing.
During this discussion, someone said something so stupid about the NBA players that I instinctively think that it is true. You see, they are calling their walkout a "boycott", because the players think that is legally very different than walking out and calling it a "strike". A "strike" would trigger the anti-strike provisions of their contract, you see, and they think that a "boycott" won't. Love to run that by a labor attorney. The owners may take no action against the players, because of the bad publicity. OTOH, the professional sports leagues are bleeding money, and the players are a major league team's largest cost. The owners are generally very rich, but one wonders if there might be an owner out there who might see an opportunity to reduce his losses considerably by actually noticing that the players are engaging in a strike. We have got to get this through our heads - some folks here simply do not believe in the concept of using lethal force in self defense. In their minds, that is a power limited to the police. Following cold logic can make you just as wrong as following hot feelings.
Understand that the interplay between logic and feelings is important. Understand that "logic" is only as valid as your ability to sniff out a con. Things can seem perfectly "logical" that are, in fact, outright lies. Realize that a coherent worldview can often be your insulation against flim-flammery and misleading "Facts And Logic". Own yourself before you try to "own" anybody else. And always remember that the outputs of a logical argument can only ever be as valid as its inputs. "Oconee Nuclear Power Station has 'The World of Energy' tours."
For Morons in the Chicago area, here are two MUST-SEE tours: The Yerkes Observatory is fascinating for many reasons. Not just the telescope, but also the unique architecture and ornamentation, and the oak landscaping by Frederick Law Olmstead. The library was roped off to visitors when I was there, but I would have gladly paid $50 to get in there and browse for a couple of hours. It appears Yerkes is currently CLOSED for tours, but this may be only temporary. This site is on primo land in an affluent town, and I suspect there is considerable commercial pressure to demolish it and redevelop it as pricy homes or whatever. So see it if it reopens, if you get a chance. Fermilab has a huge outreach to the public, offering many tours and lectures on many subjects. Some of the smartest people in the world work there, and they are more than happy to mingle with visitors and give talks. Needless to say, the technology on display is staggeringly stupendous, from the old stuff (Cockcroft-Walton voltage multiplier looks like something right out of Forbidden Planet,) to the new stuff. I never in my life saw so much cast copper before. In the gift shop, you can buy atoms and subatomic particles for souvenirs. You must go and see Fermilab. You know what will be really funny? After all these crybaby professional athletes refuse to play, it will be really funny when the teams inform them that they can't continue to pay them against their contracts.
No revenue coming in from games- no money to pay players who have huge multi-million dollar contract. I will laugh and laugh when I hear about the super mega sports star of the week can't pay for his sports cars or 4 homes after the pro teams cut off the flow of cash. It will be funny to hear them beg their fans for money. We just need them all to go bankrupt faster so we can either acquire the dead husks of these teams for pennies on the dollar or form new leagues to replace them. Same thing for all the media corporations - I can't wait until they go bankrupt. Of course a 2nd term Trump with both houses of Congress on his side could easily hasten the demise by forcing them all to divest their media properties and go back to the old days when no one company could own multiple media outlets in a market. We need to outlaw motor voter registration and vote by mail too. And we should need picture ID to vote. I think that people who worked in the assembly lines of the 1960s and 70s were not the dullards magazine writers assumed they were. When we briefly moved from a suburb to a smaller town, I had the experience of attending a school that was very economically desegregated. We all mingled and met each others' parents and families. Plenty of the people I was told were uneducated, because they did not attend college, were just differently educated. No college classes, but plenty of reading and artisan crafting. Just as we here have passions for historical periods, the men and women on the assembly line did too. I recall one guy who read everything he could about the French Revolution v our revolution, and a woman who read more romantic poetry (Shelley, Keats, Byron) than any English major I ever knew. They just didn't have the degree. The lady attended some lectures at UM and was invited to speak to Freshmen (in 1976) about the value of poetry.
I really have no time for the dismissive Vanity Fair writers or for the Hollywood/Broadway idiots who are so crudely dismissive of most of their countrymen. Posted by: CN at August 27, 2020 11:38 AM (ONvIw) 242

Back in the '80's or so, some Japanese carmaker whose name escapes me was doing research on all-ceramic engines and came down south to check out our red clay. Word in the shops was that the ceramic they made from it was so hard, they couldn't finish them with any known machine tool methods, and the project didn't last after that. The thing about common sense is that it refers to concrete 'things' which several members of the community communally perceive. We sense things, in common.
It's not a special perception of what this "2" means and that other "2" means or what "plus" and "equals" in this peculiar case and circumstance mean to give an individual and unique value of lived-truth represented as "5". The common core values are 2 and plus and 5 and equals. Commonly represented as the values they've have since "birth". Commonly perceived. Commonly communicated. Commonly appreciated. Common sense. Ordinarily when somebody tries to represent 2+2 as 5, he's trying to cheat somebody else. Posted by: pouncer at August 27, 2020 12:24 PM (Jjybm) 496

On point with the smugness and condescension thing. I grew up in a working class town in NJ, went to college in Iowa, moved to Chicago after and then settled in west 'burbs back in late '90s and have been sick of the I live in the city so I'm superior crap for ever. It's not difficult. Anyone can do it. You find a place, sign a lease, and ta da, you live in the city. You're not special. I get that bs from my city dweller friends to this day. I live in a small city, with good schools, an outstanding downtown, safe and residents that demand it stays that way especially given our property taxes. Ugh.
