The ships-in-weather video reminds me - the worst sea duty in the Atlantic in WW2 was considered to be in the British-designed Flower-class corvettes and in the US-designed destroyer escorts. Both were all but unsinkable in any conditions in the Atlantic, because as one DE captain said, "They behave like corks." That also meant they were very lively in anything but a calm sea, meaning no one got much sleep or even relaxation from continually bracing themselves, and everyone got many bruises and worse.

"their reputation for being sexually repressed Victorians believed the key to having happy, healthy and attractive babies was the parents have a good and happy sex life."
Vicky and Bertie had an awesome sex life if their private correspondence can be taken at face value. The Victorians were less about repression and more about modesty. They were the generation that followed the Georgians. If you watched your parents and grandparents act like drunk sluts while you were growing up you might value a more button-downed society as well.
Posted by: Gref at August 19, 2020 10:18 PM (AMIL/) Makes me wonder what happened to the ship that capsized end-over-end in the last sequence of that video. Did it sink, or did it bob to the surface and right itself? If no ports or hatches were breached, and it didn't break up, the latter could have happened. RE: Ships in storms video.
I was on a baby carrier and our captain decided it's be a good idea to sail our just refurbished ship through a tropical storm. We obviously didn't sink, but it beat the shit out of our new catwalks around the flight deck, and we had to spend 3 months in Naples getting them replaced again. Bonus: I had to go out on the flight deck during the storm and replace a navigation light that had burned out. I used a harness with two ropes that had locking hooks and worked my way across the deck attaching them one after the other to the tie downs on the deck. The objective in storms like that is to stay at 90 degrees angle to the big waves or as close to that as possible.
I was once in a restaurant in Wellington, New Zealand, located next to the Cook Strait, across from the South Island. This is the Roaring Forties, and they had pictures up of some of the better waves to hit the ferryboats going between Wellington and the South Island. But what intrigued me was that all three men are in uniform, and that simply won't happen today. It is a reflection of the changing landscape of war, and the radical shift in our society away from military service as a common waypoint in our lives.
- I've been reading Big Week: Smashing the Luftwaffe February 1944 which is a massive work about individual experiences leading up to and including the biggest air battle in history. Among the people he covers is Jimmy Stewart. Too underweight to join, he purposely gained weight and joined anyway. Too old for flight training, he trained anyway. (He had 400 hours as a civilian.) They wanted him to do PR, he wanted to fly and did anyway. They wanted him to be a Stateside flying instructor but he wanted to fly combat in Europe so he did anyway. His combat career began as a squadron commander flying B-24s during the war rising to chief of staff of a combat wing and, after the war, to brigadier general. Given the opportunity to opt out honorably, he opted in time after time. Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Tyrannosaur Wrangler at August 19, 2020 10:43 PM (+y/Ru) 234

On the Queen Mary 2 at dinner, mid Atlantic, ship rose and then dropped in a trouph to a 15 to 20 degree list. Eyes of the staff got big and an audible gasp, and a few screams, from he diners was heard. This is a Big ocean liner. I was impressed. It was a rough crossing. Great fun.

https://youtu.be/GaiWemnkbJE One of my weirder interests is historical costuming. Some of the research and work done in recreating garments is impressive. What's interesting is how garments were designed before air conditioning and washing machines. Often layers of natural fibers in thin fabrics which breathed, but protected the nicer layers, and were easier to wash. I missed last nights discussion about WWI on the ONT, and I just wanted to add my 2 cents about reading material etc...
The best all encompassing book I've read is "A World Undone" by G.J Meyer. its about 700 pages, but the audiobook (at 28 hrs) is a pretty good listen. To me he gives some of the best background about the Russian participation in the war. He captures the hubris Nicholas and Alexandra navigated the war. He pierces the storybook romance that a lot of historians have given the couple. Its a great overview of a complicated subject. An easier read would be "To the Last Man" by Jeff Shaara. I know its fiction, but he really dives into the personas of the war and gives you a feel of the mood and action. The intro to the book still gives me chills to think how quick a young life is lost in war. The other item was a miniseries called "The First World War." I think Kreb mentioned it yesterday. Its fantastic and is available on Amazon Prime for streaming. I loved the composition by Cecil Coles so much that I bought the CD from England for $40...it wasnt available anywhere else. That ship video reminded me of one of the few tales my father (USNR) told about being in the PAC during WW II. He was on the bridge in a convoy during a typhoon and said it was quite interesting when his ship was in a wave trough, the props of the adjacent ships would be out of the sea and at his eye level.

Posted by: Grump928(C) at August 19, 2020 10:59 PM (yQpMk) They had already lost the mainsail due to the boom having been snapped off of the mast at the gooseneck. Note the guy in the cabin's companionway holding the bundled up mainsale from being snagged by the wind. And trying to come about under headsail alone against a lee shore, well, those are what we call "not good odds." I think they would've been wiser to have used the headsail to gain speed with the waves, and just driven her ashore under control, straight up onto the open beach. Instead, she got ground into scrap by the pilings under the pier. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at August 19, 2020 11:06 PM (QzJWU) 364

I've read that 1000 ft plus freighters have to be careful in those big waves because if the bow and stern are at the wave tops with a trough below the keel it can bend or buckle the hull.
Posted by: kbdabear at August 19, 2020 11:03 PM (qAR6u) Fun nautical fact: the force on the keel, when the bow and stern are supported but the midships is not, is called "sagging". The opposite force, with the peak of a wave under the middle and the bow and stern unsupported, is called "hogging". This is one of the prevailing theories for the origin of my HQ nick. That ship video reminded me of one of the few tales my father (USNR) told about being in the PAC during WW II. He was on the bridge in a convoy during a typhoon and said it was quite interesting when his ship was in a wave trough, the props of the adjacent ships would be out of the sea and at his eye level.

Why in the hell do they take my blood pressure at the dentist? The first sphygmometer that they used sucked and showed systolic at 210 upon which I immediately called bullshit. They brought in another sphyg and it showed a normal BP which I fully expected. (I'll never forget when Psycho the Hygienist and Wannabe Cardiologist started in on me when she saw a BP of above 140. good quotes at the top there ...
"Where love rules, there is no will to power; and where power predominates, there love is lacking. The one is the shadow of the other." that is Jung ... but set against Thucydides ... "remember that this greatness was won by men with courage, with knowledge of their duty, and with a sense of honor in action" So men with great purpose, versus ... the masses? that just live to have fun and enjoy, while other "great men" control the broader "destiny of man". But none of those quotes mention the higher power ... not just man seeking his own destiny ... but fulfilling a higher calling from a Good God. imo living for the higher calling is noble and rewarding ... and our God Blessed America has faltered as we failed to protect and teach the virtues that brought us to our "Manifest Destiny" ... a destiny based not in white supremacy, but in a virtuous recognition of God given rights/privileges, and concomitant individual responsibilities. So what was Shakespeare meaning "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves, that we are underlings"? idk, a little search says it means our human weakness let's us down, when "fate" might offer something greater .. for mankind (Caeser becoming a monarch ... in the play)? Above my head on that literary front ... I think the good man views himself as too small at times, while the evil self-absorbed man sees himself as too big. "With God all things are possible", even as evil man (DeepState) thrusts himself upon us (TheNarrative, persecution) ... Average man must rise up to God's call ... maybe something like that. I don't think we are predestined to win ... we must respond. Posted by: illiniwek at August 19, 2020 11:44 PM (Cus5s) 455

A reef is a bad ending for a noble Ship of the Line. But at least she still "serves" (of a sort), in U.S. waters.
Being used as a target in Rim-Pac is at least a Viking's Funeral for a warship, wracking as it must be. The worst though, has to be a U.S. Warship being driven hard onto a Pakistani beach, broken up while flying the flag of a (mostly) enemy state, and sold off to become cheap Chinese tools at Horror Freight. Alas, they all can't be made into museum ships, and the scrappers gotta eat, same as worms. It's the Circle of Life of Steel, and in the end, it offers no quarter or respite. I don't so much mind the ultimate scrapping of the common U.S. Warship, but I damn sure wish it was restricted to and being done ONLY in U.S. Shipyards. Alter the EPA or OSHA if they must, but this would be a very Trumpian thing to do. As to the uncommon U.S. Warship, the ones with unique records of valor, heroism and glory upon the High Seas, well, it's there that I'm at a loss. We have trouble funding existing museum ships now, much less finding berthing, building shoreside tour buildings and finding the millions it takes to put an aged warrior up into Museum Condition. As an aside, I made a transatlantic crossing aboard the QE II. The trip across from England had been rough. Per conversations with the crew, there had been several broken bones sustained, and I could see unrepaired damage here there where unsecured furniture and gear had slammed around. I had a brief conversation with the Captain, this fellow ( https://tinyurl.com/y4xkce8m ) about it, and he opined that it wasn't the worst. He recounted that they had encountered a rogue wave some years before, estimated at 90 feet. That caved in the foredeck, and required repairs. Nice vid here. https://tinyurl.com/psbdw89 As I have pointed out before, the hymn takes on a bit more meaning when you're in the N. Atlantic, rough seas, and 1000 miles from land. As an aside, just had a brief bear encounter. While standing on the porch steps, observing the night, a movement caught my eye, and a bear ambled by about 25' away. It never knew I was there. Certainly, in terms of the play, Cassius is playing on Brutus' own desire for power and jealousy of Caesar. That whole scene is Cassius' seduction of Brutus to join in the conspiracy to assassinate Caesar, playing on Brutus' various weaknesses.
Posted by: Captain Obvious, --------- I think he was playing on Brutus' famous name (and possibly a direct ancestral link) to the Brutus that led to the overthrow of the Tarquin Kings and the establishment of the Republic to seduce young Brutus to the cause. A Zen Parable ... There were two monks visiting a lonely monastery high in the mountains. As they climbed the steep path, a fierce storm rolled in. They were battered by wind and rain and soon it was so dark, they could not see the path but instead had to wait for flashes of lightening to see the next rock or tree to run to and hang on. Slowly they made their way up mountain until very late they made it safely to the monastery. There they had a simple meal and a hot bath and were given a spare robe while theirs dried. The younger monk said to the older monk, "We were so close to death! I have studied and read and meditated and all I could think of was that I might die here in this storm without ever having reached enlightenment!" The older monk replied, "Do you remember those flashes of lightning that helped us get from one rock or tree to the next? Enlightenment is not a warm bath that waits for us at the end of our journey. The journey never ends. Enlightenment is simply those brief flashes that help us find a little part of the answer as we go from day to day ..." The higher calling does not involve murdering the innocent ... or murdering the Caesars (that have good intent?). Stolen from elsewhere:
A man runs up to Socrates in the Agora and says "Hey, Socrates! You'll never guess what I just heard about Diogenes!" Socrates says "One moment, my friend. That sounds like gossip. Before you tell me, I have a few questions." "First: is it True? Do you know this from your own personal knowledge?" "Well....no. I just sort of heard it from someone else." "Second: is it Good?" "Well... no. It's pretty bad, actually." "Third: will it produce Happiness?" "Definitely not." Socrates says "If it is neither True, nor Good, nor conducive to Happiness, it is of no value and I do not wish to hear it. Please go away." Thus Socrates's reputation as a great philosopher was bolstered. Thus also Socrates never found out that Diogenes was banging his wife. I finally took disability though it crushed me it let me see the truth. Result is depression is gone. Or just not so crushing. Life still is a downhill race to my bottom but i can live with knowledge that my best days are behind me and i try to enjoy my life that is left. Not happy about it but i try to find joy. Posted by: Asshoes at August 20, 2020 12:25 AM (LI2jF) ------------ I worked blue collar in Minneapolis in the 80's. Cocaine was common. I saw a gal get on her knees to snort some coke that got spilled into the carpeting. I worked with guys who dealt on the side so they could afford to their coke.

I was on the party/bar scene a lot in the 80s, in a city but not a major city, there was a lot of coke. Never touched it myself, I was already well-read and knew cocaine left a trail of blood and horror from source to user. It was very fashionable, promoted by Hollywood, I went to a big dance bar once with a female friend and she told me three guys asked her if she wanted to go somewhere and do coke, so yea, very cool 80s panty remover it was.

Really, it occurs to me that no one has a story about Joe. "We were trying to figure out X, and Joe had this idea" or "Joe did a masterful job with the X portfolio, look at the results we got" or "If it hadn't been for Joe, we wouldn't have bee able to do X." Nothing like that. I even remember reading once about Joe's public schedule as vp. He literally had like two hours a day scheduled. There's that picture of him, Hillary, and Obama going up some steps where he's all over Hillary's neck. He has the look of someone who just does nothing all day. The Kamala stories were her obnoxiously grilling Kavanaugh and Barr. Obnoxious as hell. Nothing about the great work she's done in the Senate or the big criminals she wiped up as AG in California. 5:35 of that ships in storms video - as a tin can sailor, we KNEW the guys on the carriers were laughing their asses off at the shit we get put thru "plane-guarding" for them. The carriers head into the wind and waves for launch & recovery which makes the deck most stable for them (no rolling side to side) but horribly nauseating for the boats sitting like corks around them. Sonsabitches.

I get o my knees in thanksgiving for my good fortune to be born in America an American. I would not be alive most likely if i was born elsewhere.I almost certainly would have died an infant not counted as part of the infant mortality rates. I was too small to live but i made it. America allowed me service in the United States Navy in a rate where i could function at the time even though i probably shouldn't have been let in at all. America lets me live my life on disability even though i bring nothing to the table. Im damn lucky.

64 The ships-in-weather video reminds me - the worst sea duty in the Atlantic in WW2 was considered to be in the British-designed Flower-class corvettes and in the US-designed destroyer escorts. Both were all but unsinkable in any conditions in the Atlantic, because as one DE captain said, "They behave like corks." That also meant they were very lively in anything but a calm sea, meaning no one got much sleep or even relaxation from continually bracing themselves, and everyone got many bruises and worse.
Posted by: Gref at August 19, 2020 10:18 PM (AMIL/) ****************** The author 'The Cruel Sea', Nicolas Montsarrat, who served as a first officer on a Royal Navy Flower class corvette during the Battle of the Atlantic, tells in his wonderful autobiography, 'Life is a Four Letter Word' that the of all the sailors who served on those ships that were unfortunately burdened with the names of flowers, the short straw went to the crew of HMS Pansy. Yep, the Admiralty decided to call one of their ships the Pansy. There was a vigorous letter campaign by the crew, officers and their families to try to persuade the Admiralty to change the name but to no avail. And the crew were, as far as Montsarrat knew, the only crew in the Royal Navy to be given permission by their Captain to remove the ribbon on their hats bearing the name of their ship before disembarking on shore leave. Though this caused numerous problem with the law authorities in various ports who were highly suspicious of Royal Navy crew members walking around without any identifying ship name on their uniform and many were arrested on the suspicion of spying before the Captain ironed out the problem with the authorities. I was such a nerd. Saw it twice during my college years, and those took me to San Diego, L.A., and S.F. Now acid and shrooms, OTOH, were always around, at least in San Diego. There was actually a weird synthesis of new wave, preppies, and acid. It was if they sorta wanted to be 60's rebels to 80's music. Not common like the coke scene apparently was, but it was there if you wanted to find it. There was also the straightforward 60's revival in the 80's with, naturally, psychedelics. The coke scene would've absolutely bored me. Oh, there was that song "White Line" that got a lot of play. "Get higher baby!"

Good Morning Morons yesterday was Wednesday, August 19, 2020. On that day in 1692 in Salem, Province of Massachusetts Bay, five people, one woman and four men, including a clergyman, are executed after being convicted of witchcraft. Now in MA they substitute Republicans as witches. On this day on the 20th in 1308 Pope Clement V pardoned Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, absolving him of charges of heresy. But that did nothing for his burning at the stake. He was hounded to his death at the bidding of the French ruler who owed the Knights Templar millions in gold which he could not pay. I was at Wally World grocery shopping today, trying hard to follow the arrows which most shoppers were ignoring. The store wasn't busy and kind of under-stocked in the grocery dept. Anyway, I see the Aunt Jemima boxes still on the shelves,(the younger gal) I wonder if they aren't selling as well as they did. The sporting dept had no attendant, and I did see some ammo in glass covered shelves...But no one around to help. This store can look pretty good, but yesterday it looked like it needed a good cleaning.

There are lots of scenarios with Slow Joe being removed from the ticket. He could die before the election. Then what happens with the various states' timely ballot registration requirements? Especially if he dies after some people have already early voted. Or he could be removed after a disastrous debate, showing him to be really not there at all. Same questions apply as above. And if Biden is removed from the ticket before the election but after votes are cast, can those votes be automatically tallied for the new ticket? I don't think the Constitution covers that scenario.
Now the more interesting question is what happens if Biden wins but dies or is removed for health reasons before he is inaugurated? The Constitution makes no mention of what happens when a president-elect dies, only a sitting president (with the presidency going to the sitting vice-president). Add on top of that the potential for a Constitutional crisis with Heels Up not being Natural-Born, you have a perfect insane storm on the horizon. Posted by: NaCly Dog at August 20, 2020 06:27 AM (hyuyC) The question is who would have standing to even bring such a suit to court? (IIRC, no citizen had standing to bring up Barry's fake birth certificate in court.) I don't think even the FBI would have standing. Posted by: NaCly Dog at August 20, 2020 06:33 AM (hyuyC) Yes, 1 vote per state House delegation. I wonder if they have to vote amongst themselves first, when a State's House delegation is split between the parties, before they vote on the House floor? That may not favor Trump.
