I've been in many storms at sea but the weirdest experience was sailing in 40 foot seas with maybe 7 knots of wind. We would get to the top of each swell and see nothing but corduroy to the horizon. It was like being on an alien ocean world.

I was on a baby carrier and our captain decided it's be a good idea to sail our just refurbished ship through a tropical storm. We obviously didn't sink, but it beat the shit out of our new catwalks around the flight deck, and we had to spend 3 months in Naples getting them replaced again.
Bonus: I had to go out on the flight deck during the storm and replace a navigation light that had burned out. I used a harness with two ropes that had locking hooks and worked my way across the deck attaching them one after the other to the tie downs on the deck.

What's interesting is how garments were designed before air conditioning and washing machines. Often layers of natural fibers in thin fabrics which breathed, but protected the nicer layers, and were easier to wash.

I did. And greatly improved on the work that had been done before in the process. I fully expect that I will have to do more "emergency" work in the morning due to being sandbagged - a very common occurrence I'm discovering - but at least it won't catch me by surprise and I am not going to worry about it at all.

I'm going to be changing vets. I go to one each month for revolution dose, nail clipping, and glands. This was at a cost to me, but I don't like clipping the nails myself. This vet has a clinic set up. Since it's a clinic set up, no appointments, this meant waiting outside in 90 degree heat for close to 2 hours. With the dog. In July, when told this, I said nope, and only paid for the revolution dose.
I can get the nail clipping done elsewhere, and when it is time for an actual office call for shots I'll go to a vet that makes appointments. These medical people do not give a rat's butt about their customers.

I've been reading Big Week: Smashing the Luftwaffe February 1944 which is a massive work about individual experiences leading up to and including the biggest air battle in history. Among the people he covers is Jimmy Stewart. Too underweight to join, he purposely gained weight and joined anyway. Too old for flight training, he trained anyway. (He had 400 hours as a civilian.) They wanted him to do PR, he wanted to fly and did anyway. They wanted him to be a Stateside flying instructor but he wanted to fly combat in Europe so he did anyway. His combat career began as a squadron commander flying B-24s during the war rising to chief of staff of a combat wing and, after the war, to brigadier general. Given the opportunity to opt out honorably, he opted in time after time.

Not weird at all. There's an British series on Amazon Prime called "A Stitch in Time" where they recreate certain historical outfits using only the techniques of the particular period. The woman who hosts it is beyond annoying, but the 3 women who reconstruct the costumes deserve a show all their own. The work they do is amazing.

As regards guys in uniform --
My daughter's boyfriend will enter Army basic training at the end of this month. He hopes to earn money for college after his stint is over.
We're all proud of him. He's a hard worker and a great guy.
She's away at college, so this will be a true test of their relationship. This past school year, she came home practically every weekend to see him.
I think this will strengthen their relationship, but only time will tell.
I look forward to seeing him in uniform.

The last trip I took from Ma to DC before I moved, on the way back I got delayed and for the first time I couldn't get an Uber or a taxi at 11 pm. Of course, this was Ma and user's aren't as ubiquitous as here but it was pretty shocking to get stranded. Luckily my neighbor was up and came and gave me a ride.

One of my weirder interests is historical costuming. Some of the research and work done in recreating garments is impressive. What's interesting is how garments were designed before air conditioning and washing machines. Often layers of natural fibers in thin fabrics which breathed, but protected the nicer layers, and were easier to wash.

The best all encompassing book I've read is "A World Undone" by G.J Meyer. its about 700 pages, but the audiobook (at 28 hrs) is a pretty good listen. To me he gives some of the best background about the Russian participation in the war. He captures the hubris Nicholas and Alexandra navigated the war. He pierces the storybook romance that a lot of historians have given the couple. Its a great overview of a complicated subject.
An easier read would be "To the Last Man" by Jeff Shaara. I know its fiction, but he really dives into the personas of the war and gives you a feel of the mood and action. The intro to the book still gives me chills to think how quick a young life is lost in war.
The other item was a miniseries called "The First World War." I think Kreb mentioned it yesterday. Its fantastic and is available on Amazon Prime for streaming. I loved the composition by Cecil Coles so much that I bought the CD from England for $40...it wasnt available anywhere else.

I've read that 1000 ft plus freighters have to be careful in those big waves because if the bow and stern are at the wave tops with a trough below the keel it can bend or buckle the hull.

They had already lost the mainsail due to the boom having been snapped off of the mast at the gooseneck. Note the guy in the cabin's companionway holding the bundled up mainsale from being snagged by the wind.
And trying to come about under headsail alone against a lee shore, well, those are what we call "not good odds."
I think they would've been wiser to have used the headsail to gain speed with the waves, and just driven her ashore under control, straight up onto the open beach.
Instead, she got ground into scrap by the pilings under the pier.

Fun nautical fact: the force on the keel, when the bow and stern are supported but the midships is not, is called "sagging". The opposite force, with the peak of a wave under the middle and the bow and stern unsupported, is called "hogging".
This is one of the prevailing theories for the origin of my HQ nick.

When my Dad's rescue boat squadron transferred to Okinawa from the Philippines, they spent 72 hours in a typhoon. He was in a 63 foot plywood boat being towed by an LST. During that 72 hours, the tow cable parted three times. I can't imagine what that must have been like.

I have adjusted amazingly well from a suburban house to a high rise apartment in the middle of a city. In that same storm I mentioned, I had to go far forward on the level just below the flight deck, because on of the deck pad lights was leaking into the space below, to try and seal it up.
We went down into a trough and I went weightless, floating in air above the floor. When we hit the bottom of the trough I hit the deck. Hurt like hell but was lucky I didn't break anything.

I was at my dentist yesterday, and now, come to think of it, they didn't polish my teeth either. But they did apply some horrific fluoride to my teeth...
I couldn't quite get that taste out of my mouth all damn day.
You know what I don't get? Why in the hell do they take my blood pressure at the dentist? The first sphygmometer that they used sucked and showed systolic at 210 upon which I immediately called bullshit. They brought in another sphyg and it showed a normal BP which I fully expected. (I'll never forget when Psycho the Hygienist and Wannabe Cardiologist started in on me when she saw a BP of above 140. Never mind I had just eaten a considerably large breakfast to carry me through the dental visit and beyond. I haven't seen Psycho since and hope I never do.)

Above my head on that literary front ... I think the good man views himself as too small at times, while the evil self-absorbed man sees himself as too big. "With God all things are possible", even as evil man (DeepState) thrusts himself upon us (TheNarrative, persecution) ... Average man must rise up to God's call ... maybe something like that. I don't think we are predestined to win ... we must respond.

Did he really? Seems he spends most of his time in Atlanta with the Carter Center. Of course, nw at his age he doesn't do much of anything. I was on a plane with him once, headed from Atlanta to Amsterdam. He went around the first class section and introduced himself to everyone, and then went to his seat and went to sleep. I guess the introduction drill was so people wouldn't harass him during the flight.

Yakima Firing Center in the winter -10 and 29 Stumps during the summer 120. One summer we were in the field at the YFC and the platoon sergeant got on the horn to range and patched through to dominoes and ordered 20 pizzas. Being used as a target in Rim-Pac is at least a Viking's Funeral for a warship, wracking as it must be.
The worst though, has to be a U.S. Warship being driven hard onto a Pakistani beach, broken up while flying the flag of a (mostly) enemy state, and sold off to become cheap Chinese tools at Horror Freight.
Alas, they all can't be made into museum ships, and the scrappers gotta eat, same as worms.
It's the Circle of Life of Steel, and in the end, it offers no quarter or respite.
I don't so much mind the ultimate scrapping of the common U.S. Warship, but I damn sure wish it was restricted to and being done ONLY in U.S. Shipyards. Alter the EPA or OSHA if they must, but this would be a very Trumpian thing to do.
As to the uncommon U.S. Warship, the ones with unique records of valor, heroism and glory upon the High Seas, well, it's there that I'm at a loss.
We have trouble funding existing museum ships now, much less finding berthing, building shoreside tour buildings and finding the millions it takes to put an aged warrior up into Museum Condition.
Like at the pound. We can't take 'em all home, however much we'd like.

As an aside, I made a transatlantic crossing aboard the QE II. The trip across from England had been rough. Per conversations with the crew, there had been several broken bones sustained, and I could see unrepaired damage here there where unsecured furniture and gear had slammed around.
I had a brief conversation with the Captain, this fellow ( https://tinyurl.com/y4xkce8m ) about it, and he opined that it wasn't the worst. He recounted that they had encountered a rogue wave some years before, estimated at 90 feet. That caved in the foredeck, and required repairs.

Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. I get it depression sucks ass. Find out what is causing it and stop the cause. In my case depression was a result of over work. Working way past my ability to function without pain and fatigue. Trying to do work i was not able to do. I finally took disability though it crushed me it let me see the truth. Result is depression is gone. Or just not so crushing. Life still is a downhill race to my bottom but i can live with knowledge that my best days are behind me and i try to enjoy my life that is left. Not happy about it but i try to find joy. It is the only choice.

Take a pipeline-grade welder (who already makes beaucoup bucks), hire him at massively higher wages than that to work in the Alaska Interior, then stick him in remote camps where he a) has all of his room and board paid and b) doesn't have anywhere to spend any of that lovely money for a couple of weeks at a time.

Really, it occurs to me that no one has a story about Joe. Though this caused numerous problem with the law authorities in various ports who were highly suspicious of Royal Navy crew members walking around without any identifying ship name on their uniform and many were arrested on the suspicion of spying before the Captain ironed out the problem with the authorities.

Now the more interesting question is what happens if Biden wins but dies or is removed for health reasons before he is inaugurated? The Constitution makes no mention of what happens when a president-elect dies, only a sitting president (with the presidency going to the sitting vice-president).
Add on top of that the potential for a Constitutional crisis with Heels Up not being Natural-Born, you have a perfect insane storm on the horizon.

The question is who would have standing to even bring such a suit to court? (IIRC, no citizen had standing to bring up Barry's fake birth certificate in court.) I don't think even the FBI would have standing. I guess Congress would have standing, which makes the question a joke.

Yes, 1 vote per state House delegation. I wonder if they have to vote amongst themselves first, when a State's House delegation is split between the parties, before they vote on the House floor? That may not favor Trump.
