The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Politics is a filthy business. It is corrupt, and it corrupts most of the people involved. The founders knew that, and tried to limit the size of government so that corruption was kept to a minimum.

We failed them. Hobbes' Leviathan is here; it is terrifyingly huge. And as much as we would like to believe that those who seem to be on the correct side of the debate have pure impulses, unsullied by filthy lucre, that would be tremendously naive, as this indictment seems to indicate.

Unless the Department of Justice has created this out of whole cloth, it does seem to be substantive. This is not based on entrapment and edited 302s, although the recent behavior of the law enforcement apparatus of the United States government does not fill me with confidence that a railroading isn't possible!

Leaders Of 'We Build The Wall' Online Fundraising Campaign Charged With Defrauding Hundreds Of Thousands Of Donors

Starting in approximately December 2018, BRIAN KOLFAGE, STEPHEN BANNON, ANDREW BADOLATO, and TIMOTHY SHEA, and others, orchestrated a scheme to defraud hundreds of thousands of donors, including donors in the Southern District of New York, in connection with an online crowdfunding campaign ultimately known as “We Build The Wall” that raised more than $25 million to build a wall along the southern border of the United States. In particular, to induce donors to donate to the campaign, KOLFAGE repeatedly and falsely assured the public that he would “not take a penny in salary or compensation” and that “100% of the funds raised . . . will be used in the execution of our mission and purpose” because, as BANNON publicly stated, “we’re a volunteer organization.”

Those representations were false. In truth, KOLFAGE, BANNON, BADOLATO, and SHEA received hundreds of thousands of dollars in donor funds from We Build the Wall, which they each used in a manner inconsistent with the organization’s public representations. In particular, KOLFAGE covertly took for his personal use more than $350,000 in funds that donors had given to We Build the Wall, while BANNON, through a non-profit organization under his control (“Non-Profit-1” ), received over $1 million from We Build the Wall, at least some of which BANNON used to cover hundreds of thousands of dollars in BANNON’s personal expenses. To conceal the payments to KOLFAGE from We Build the Wall, KOLFAGE, BANNON, BADOLATO, and SHEA devised a scheme to route those payments from We Build the Wall to KOLFAGE indirectly through Non-Profit-1 and a shell company under SHEA’s control, among other avenues. They did so by using fake invoices and sham “vendor” arrangements, among other ways, to ensure, as KOLFAGE noted in a text message to BADOLATO, that his pay arrangement remained “confidential” and kept on a “need to know” basis.

It seems damning, however I will reserve judgement until there is more than one side presented. If it is true? Send them to jail. If it isn't true? It is one more nail in the coffin of justice in America. But that indictment sure does sound hyperbolic. Breathless exhortations to the crowd to "Burn the witch!" always make me suspicious.

And if it does pan out, it does suggest that President Trump chose wisely when he separated himself from Bannon three years ago.

I just wish that the same investigatory power was exerted when other organizations like...oh...The Clinton Foundation, or Open Society Foundations play fast and loose with their money.

A fella can dream!

20 The same shenanigans probably took place with many of the TEA Party nonprofits, Occupy, and with BLM.

On another note, there is a huge iceberg of corruption that is taking place with nonprofits in general; especially ones run by current or former politicians.

If there was some sort or Sarbox investigation into the goings-on with these orgs, it would make the corruption in the for-profit corporations look like a walk in the park.

We're still waiting for the politician with the guts to go after this sector. It's ripe for reform.

That's what the SDNY is saying, proving that is something altogether. The reason the Clinton Foundation is not being indicted for the same thing isn't because Bannon and those Wall Fund people have more worthless legal disclaimers and representation that the CF, its they have a shit load less political cover than the Clintons. No one at the DOJ is going to bring a very complicated case to court that is going to be difficult to win if the politics are going to be unbearable too - with Bannon, the PR is worth the trouble I guess.

That's always been a red herring. They want them because they suspect there's something in there that will be politically embarrassing that they can leak before election day. After November 5th, it becomes completely pointless, and Trump could let them go out - although I doubt he will, just because it annoys the Left so much when he refuses to do what they tell him to do.

The reason we KNOW that there is nothing criminal in them - the New York State Revenue Service went through them all with a fine toothed comb years ago, as did the Internal Revenue Service. Does anyone really think there is something in there that all the lawyers and accountants in those two agencies missed? The idea is preposterous. There's nothing criminal there.

The concept that people who became rich by scamming the public sector are harassing someone who made money by offering goods and services that people wanted is obscene enough. They're surely looking for something legal that looks strange to the average gullible mark who will ignore that the accusers are responsible for that being in the tax code in the first place, either directly putting it there or not changing it.

Yup. Inner cities are full of store front "churches" that get all the religious exemptions. You can send away for the materials through mail order and become an "ordained minister" yourself, right now, and conduct marriages and get all the other benefits of being a "religion".

Personally, I don't think religions should get any special tax exemptions. Religions at the top are mostly members of The Left, and constantly push for higher taxes on the rest of us. Look at the mainline religions that are in large part responsible for the glut of "refugees" who get resettled in the USA every year. Refugee resettlement is a huge money maker for the Lutherans and Catholics. And it's a two-fer, it destroys communities here at home. Why else is Minneapolis a Somali homeland?

Not so. To say so is to ignore Hobbes, and just use his name as an imprecation. If we had HIS Leviathan, we would have an over-powerful government. But we would not have Antifa/BLM, or sanctuary cities, or any of the other signs of breakdown we see all about.

Now, you can argue that big government will inevitably lead to this, but you shouldn't associate it with Hobbes. His errors lay elsewhere. This seems like Shandyan association, which works in humor, but fails as thought. Which is part of the fun of Shandy.

If you ever want to make your eyes glaze over, read up on 501(c)(3) organization, 501(c)(4)'s, and 501(c)(6)'s, and how they can operate in conjunction with Section 527 PAC organizations. This is what most of the "campaign consultants" in DC, especially the lawyers and the accountants, spend their time on. If you daisy chain enough of these together, and have at least one or two of the links headquartered in Aruba, you can send any amount of money anywhere you want and all traces of its origination point will be erased. That's how the game is played.

Bannon is being charged (like D'nesh D'souza before him) for being too cheap to hire (read: pay off) all the Right People that are needed to make this all work legally. And just in case you wonder - yes, of course this system was set up this way on purpose, from the beginning. The only people who will ever be charged are amateurs who think they can do it on their own.

No, not specifically. Nobody votes because of Eva. But the Democrats have been helped enormously for half a century by the fact that every single movie and television show and song you hear with a political message, has a Communist message.

Not some, or most, but all of them.

Just something we've always had to contend with, and always will.

True. But I'd argue that was before they got a hold of the baby in the crib, so to speak. Indoctrination now starts in school, less so over the radio with Neil Young.

Remember when Jennifer Lawrence said she was taking a break from acting around the time that the Weinstein thing broke? She was gonna get all political.

First, I doubt her political activism amounts to much more than retweeting stuff from leftist organizations and occasionally pwning some poor sap on Twitter who dared cross her. Second, we never actually hear from her, huh?

She was the biggest star in the world, and the Weinstein stopped producing movies and she's kinda vanished.

Not exactly. What he says is that it is a straightforward theory of the case. What the announcement says seems pretty open and shut IF things are as presented.

If you raise money and say I am not going to take money from it, and you take money from it, AND you set up a shell corporation to hide that, it is pretty evidently fraud.

These are the kinds of things that are able to be known and not really open to interpretation. Was there a shell corp? Did it receive money from the non-profit? Did it pay Kolfage?

Especially if there are communications that say "hey we are going to get you paid but we have to keep it on the down low."

SDNY indicates that they have all of those things.

She was well cast as Ree Dolly, a plucky member of a dysfunctional white trash family who remarkably keeps things together. The author of the book it was based on, Daniel Woodrell, has written at least one other that would make a great film, Give Us a Kiss (and yes, I know that a movie was made out of a Civil War era book he wrote) that includes some members of the Dolly family.

There's a personality type that's addicted to Fame, some seek it, many more are addicted to worshiping it. I'm not one of them, so it disgusts me, although I note those who do it. I'm reminded of a piece about people who'd been putting 20 hours a day into seeking fame and huge numbers of followers on Social Media, and then being bitterly disappointed to find that they weren't making a dime from all the effort they were putting into it.

To the delight of professional journalists, former President Barack Obama gave a jaw-dropping speech at the Democratic convention on Wednesday. Its dark and divisive tone signaled an attempt to drag America backwards by electing the man who served for eight years as his vice president.

Obama's speech was the rhetorical equivalent of a culture war Hiroshima blast. It offered some token words of praise for Joe Biden, whom he repeatedly urged not to run, but was infused with the desperate rantings of a man who needs to be praised. "He made me a better president," Obama said, effortlessly hogging the spotlight as usual.

304 In Dark and Divisive Speech, Obama Seeks to Turn Back Clock on America

Morgan Freeman Tops First 'Daily Show' Poll to Find Next Celebrity President

Late-night show links up with research outfit YouGov for first polling initiative

Morgan Freeman proved to be the most popular of all possible fictional celebrity candidates, winning 81% of his head-to-head match-ups, while Denzel Washington came in just behind him with 76%. Tom Hanks and Samuel L. Jackson each won 73% of their matchups, while Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson fell just behind them, winning 72%.

The Daily Show and YouGov also offered some helpful breakdowns by party. Among just Republicans, Morgan Freeman won 86% of his match-ups, while Judge Judy (81%), Clint Eastwood (80%), NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (79%) and Tim Allen (78%) came in behind him. Among Democrats, Jackson was the runaway favorite, winning 87% of his matchups, followed by Hanks (82%), Freeman (81%), George Clooney (80%) and Oprah (78%).

One day I got a hesitant DM from her asking if I "was an FOA". Confused I had to ask what that was, and found out it is Friend of Abe.

So that snide little tweet is ignoring that there are a lot in the entertainment industry who will vote for Trump in November. They just won't appear at the RNC convention because they want to keep their jobs.

355 yeah, they may well be misrepresenting what they have, idk. Cernovich also said the indictment included that Kolfage changed the web page to say he decided he would take a salary, which seems like a problem.

But it is the way they (allegedly) tried to sneak it through that seems to be the problem. The claim is they "laundered" it through a second entity ... and Bannon paid Kolfage out of that. That seems really dumb .... Bannon is not accused of taking money himself, except maybe normal expenses.

Kobach is not named with the others, so maybe he was not involved in that part of it.
Posted by: illiniwek at August 20, 2020 12:02 PM (Cus5s)

Again, not exactly what he said. What he was saying is that it is okay to take a salary from a non-profit. If Kolfage had changed the webpage to indicate that he was taking a salary and said he changed his mind on that, it would not have been a crime.

Instead what is alleged is that the four of them set up a shell company that submitted invoices to the non-profit that were fake, and that was used to pay Kolfage. And there are communications that say they did that for the purpose of keeping his compensation confidential.

If all of that is true, that is fraud plain and simple, and there is intent.

1. Ability to self think. Some people will follow anything anybody tells them. Other people will question everything and ask why and what if. Whether you are born with those traits or they are nutured is a topic for another day.

2. Somewhere there were counter balancing schools of thought introduced to the young minds of mush. If you had parents that were NOT too busy not loving their spouses, not raising their kids and constantly in search of distractions from life and obligation and actually intervened in the upbringing of their children.... those kids have a chance at resisting indoctrination.... especially if they are natural born followers.
Posted by: fixerupper at August 20, 2020 11:52 AM (nw6Hr)

My wife and I had the same conversation the other day while walking.

I shared with her that most people are very trusting and not very inquisitive.

The trusting nature in our society goes back to our liberal western heritage. As that heritage is weakened more people are not only less trusting but more dishonest. The cultures and government of 90% of the counties that the 30 million illegal aliens are from are built on bribery and mismanaged bureaucracies.

We need more distrust of government, bureaucracies, education, and science. I have decide to assume that almost every article or new report is wrong. I look for those errors and lies. If just 20% minorities would wake up and look around they would see that their big government rulers do nothing to help their cities, schools, or families.

I think your point number is very real and a real issue. Most people have gotten intellectually lazy and actually believe the gas-lighting they hear every day. There is no doubt in my mind that college drives the intellectual curiosity out young peoples mind by creating a culture of fear and self-suppression.

Most big college campuses are about as free as an East Berliner in 1970.

Years ago, there was an issue with enemy combatants getting under the wire at a base in AFG. The problem was initially solved with GSD dogs. They (the dogs) could sense, from hundreds of yards away, when a person was trying to penetrate the perimeter. The dog was then released and attack the infiltrator, many times resulting in an ugly death. It cured the problem and the contractor who headed that program received an award.

One of those dogs litter sits in my house. Just sayin

==========

The convention is the big line of cocaine you give your most loyal supporters to get them excited about working for pretty much free and endlessly over the next two to three months to elect a guy you will never meet to the presidency.

You bring everyone together and throw a several day long party celebrating everything about the political party and the presidential nominee. You build connections and the ability to network with other people in the campaign, building actual connections that you can rely on in the future instead of just email signatures and talking heads on a screen.

This is going to end up being a disaster for the campaign. No one's excited, the organizing function of the campaign is hobbled, and the sense of community is gone.

Biden was already facing an enthusiasm problem, and this is just making it worse.

at the beginning of his Wrant, Cerno' says it would have been better if he had just changed his mind on the salary. But at the end he notes that part of the indictment is that he changed the web page, and claims that indicates he knew it was "wrong" and so he tried to cover it up.

idk, he could change his mind, but if they falsified receipts/invoices, clearly that is illegal. imo it is still a problem to change his mind, since the money was collected under other pretenses. MAYBE if he only collected a salary on contributions AFTER he changed his mind .. it would be OK, idk.

387 I see where the DHS is worried about "Right wing terror groups". Talk about projection. Terror is what the left does because the left is trying to shove its crappy ideology down everyone's throat. What the right does is military operations. Now I suppose those operations look terrifying to those on the receiving end, but they are simply meant to end a war as quickly as possible.
My read on things is that CW2 gets rolling on Nov 4, after PDT wins re-election.and the brown shirts fancy themselves an army, and try to export their violence to small towns, and run into their first experience with Deer hunters sniping them from out of effective AK-47 range.
People see different things because of their skill sets. For example, when an Antifa type sees an overhead picture of one of their riots, they see the inevitable march of history, and a powerful force taking the streets. However what any skilled rifle shot sees in that same picture, is fish in a barrel.

394 The problem with campaign finance isn't that groups can contribute, it's the bang-for-buck they get because individual politicians are so powerful.

If you reduce each elected incumbent's power, the dish has to be spread thinner. Obviously no legislator is going to vote to diminish his/her power, so the only way is to increase the total number who hold the same power.
