The State of Our Cities That Our Media Is Hiding From You

Mike Doran:

I've been exchanging messages with friends about what what's happening in our cities: NY, Philadelphia and LA especially. A lot of disturbing things are not making the news. Even Republicans aren't drawing attention to it. Here's a message from a friend about life in NY today:

"Here's my neighborhood, Mike: An elderly man, enjoying dinner w/his wife at an outdoor restaurant, punched in the face. A woman waiting for the subway to come stabbed in the back. An older neighbor pausing to catch his breath told to pay two dollars in protection money or get the fuck off that particular street corner. This is just the ten block radius from where I live in the last six days."

Other friends from NY talk about shattered business districts, drugstores with locked shelves, and hundreds of homeless people and parolees, including sex offenders, being moved into hotels on the Upper West Side adjacent to schools and playgrounds, which are filled with needles again like in the 1970s. Friends in Philadelphia report large homeless encampments in the city center and being robbed at gunpoint.

Friends in LA talk about squatters taking over empty homes in professional class neighborhoods whose residents fantasize about emigrating to Canada. Friends in all three cities have seen police officers refuse to get out of their cars while large-scale lawbreaking takes place in front of them. That’s in addition to the obvious mayhem being perpetrated on a nightly basis in Portland, Seattle and Chicago. Estimates are that up to one million people have already fled New York City -- meaning nearly everyone who has the means to leave has left.

Minneapolis is a smoldering ruin that has sustained untold damage to its immigrant neighborhoods. This is not what I am reading. This is what I am hearing from people directly.

Make no mistake about it: America is now in the middle of a 70s style urban crisis whose root is a well-founded fear of violent crime and social collapse in the midst of a pandemic. The destructive spiral that has been unleashed by leftwing play-acting at revolution and pursuit of stupid fantasies of abolishing the police is destroying our greatest cities.

As urban residents vote with their feet, we are being left with empty urban shells with no tax base and no meaningful employment. The fact that the business of Washington DC is the Federal government and the national media is now centered here is blinding our society to what's actually happening in other big cities across the country.

What's happening is this: Thirty years of very meaningful social and economic progress in our cities -- which has hugely benefited minorities -- is being undone by a toxic coalition of professional ideologues and "organizers," rich kids in Che t-shirts, well-coiffed Mayors, and a National Democratic Party that pretends that the ongoing destruction of minority owned businesses and the social and economic infrastructure that is a primary engine for raising African American and immigrant families into the middle class is somehow about "civil rights" or "racial inequality." It is not.

It is about a war on the American middle class being waged from above and below by people whose response to the values and the struggles of average American families is hostility and contempt -- and who imagine that the threat of further violence is a crowbar they can use to get Donald Trump out of the White House. Sacrificing America's cities on the altar of their political cause may seem bizarre, because that’s where so many of their voters live -- but it's not. Who else are urban liberals going to vote for? Suburbanites can’t help but see the destruction of the cities as a harbinger of what could be next for them. The question is who can protect them -- Donald Trump, or the people who celebrate the CHAZ.

13 What's not so funny is this was the world the media was portraying was going to turn into under Trump, except against minorities like Muslims and illegal aliens. Basically that it would be "open season". Instead it's directed in the opposite direction with the media cheering them on.

But what do you want to bet the people victimized in these deep blue cities have "Black Lives Matter" all over their social media pages?

14 The urban crisis is much worse than the 1970's. Not only.are people making ready to abandon their cities, the pandemic plus the Internet makes staying in cities increasingly obsolete. Which means the strategies Democrats used to keep control over the population will be increasingly ineffective... and make the cities particularly vulnerable to a dictatorial takeover.

28 There are two opposing trends in urban development: one is the exponential growth of cities and the other is shrinking cities, which are characterized by a decrease in number of residents. Since the 2008 financial crisis, there have been great changes in the Pearl River Delta (PRD), where growing and shrinking areas coexist. We must analyze cities' growth and shrinkage in respect of urban construction and economic vitality in the PRD in spatial term. Thus, we would define land use changes in urban construction to characterize growth by using Landsat Thematic Mapper data on urban built-up areas of the PRD region in 2000, 2009, and 2013; and we can characterize economic activities for vitality by using Defense Meteorological Satellite Program/Operational Linescan System nighttime light data in various years after time continuous correction and vegetation correction, in combination with population data. Four different types of space would be identified in this region, namely continuous growth, transformational growth, stationary, and shrinkage. From there we can provide policy recommendations and planning strategies for the future development of shrinking cities in China. Shrinkage is considered to be only a short-term stage in the urbanization process faced by most cities in China and abroad. Technological progress and industrial transformation are likely to be critical factors affecting the direction of urban development, where cities can resume growth from shrinkage by revitalizing manufacturing industry and economic activities through education, innovation, and technology.

The outright overt hated of and barely-contained violence toward white and Asian people by blacks just permeates the atmosphere. It was bad before, but now it's just out in the open. Direct, unapologetic hostility. Violence seemingly about to erupt at any moment.

I know people -- white liberals with BLM signs in the windows - who drive over the hill to Orinda to go shopping rather than risk just walking down the street in parts of Oakland.

They don't. The problem is that they don't have much say in the matter.

The activist class are in a escalating spiral to try and outdo one another. It's social positioning for leadership. Meanwhile, the nihilists like the feeling of power they get from smashing shit. And the higher ups in the political organizations see these riots as a way to mobilize the youth vote.

People who live , breathe, and regurgitate the left wing ideology do not believe what they are actually seeing. If you adopt that type of ideology, you are not rationally thinking. You do not have a reality view of the world. It's like the old saying about communism, it fails because it wasn't "done right". Choices have Consequences. All of California has been living in this dream world for decades now where there are no consequences, no matter how foolishly their society chooses. Well consequences can be deferred, but the price of deferring the consequences of bad decisions is that the cost gets higher and higher and higher.

Oakland and places like it are doomed, not just for political and economic reasons, but because the populations there are Spiritually and Morally corrupted. It has gone so far that no matter what happens now, they are going to destroy themselves, and anyone who gets caught up in that maelstrom with them. There is no avoiding it anymore, there are no policies, no plans that can change that. The die is cast, the judgment has been rendered.

I feel great sympathy for anyone who chooses to stay there for what may be good reasons, but again, that is a choice that will have a painful consequence.

Power. Raw political power. This was the Coleman Young strategy of the 1970's in Detroit. Drive out white. Get his skinny white ass out of Detroit, and Coleman Young and his political descendants will rule the city...forever.

It kind of worked, and kind of didn't. The net results were that much of the city was wrecked; the Big Three auto makers shut down a lot of their factories and moved them out into the suburbs. Ford was almost always in Dearborn. GM and Chrysler moved out into Warren, Sterling Heights, Troy, Madison Heights, etc.

Detroit is actually coming back, in fits and starts. It's much better today than it was 20 and even 10 years ago. And surprise, it has a white (Democrat) mayor now, who does not want to have a pogrom against white people.

But Minneapolis, New York City, Chicago, etc., are going by that playbook.

And they fully expect that the next time we have a Democrat President, that the Federalis will bail them out of their little financial jam.

173 It is about a war on the American middle class being waged from above and below by people whose response to the values and the struggles of average American families is hostility and contempt - and who imagine that the threat of further violence is a crowbar they can use to get Donald Trump out of the White House.

And I'm pretty sure it will work. Not just because of battered wife syndrome, but because all the leftist garbage who flee their cities and settle in a "safer" area will wipe the sweat off their foreheads and vote for the Dems because, after all, the violence is now more than 10 miles from their houses.

Sacrificing America's cities on the altar of their political cause may seem bizarre, because that's where so many of their voters live - but it's not, Who else are urban liberals going to vote for? Suburbanites can't help but see the destruction of the cities as a harbinger of what could be next for them. The question is who can protect them - Donald Trump, or the people who celebrate the CHAZ.

"Vote for Biden and this all goes away." That is going to be the unspoken theme of the Kamala campaign, and Teh Donald needs to punch back like a motherfucking hammer.

While he was a decent mayor, especially as he was given a great city by Giuliani - even with 9/11, he did no more than not mess anything up. By that definition, I suppose, that's success.

In the meantime, Kaiser Wilhelm has been actively running the city into the ground - the city that Bloomberg handed over to him.

Where's the criticism from him?

I haven't heard anything from him about what is happening to the city where he bases his empire. Nothing about what might happen if Wall Street picks up stakes and leaves. Nothing about safety, crime, or the quality of life decline. Nothing about the exodus that the NY Post is chronicling daily.

During the WuFlu shutdown, Bloomberg 'News' lauds Fredo's response. Nothing about the Kaiser's management of NYC.

If there was anyone who could snap the residents of NYC out of their torpor over the destruction of their city, it would be Bloomberg, whom everyone agrees did a good job as the previous mayor.

His silence is deafening, as well as disgusting.

240 I've been wondering what's going on in Houston proper. I live in one of the dozen little towns SE of Houston and don't go into the city often. Things weren't that bad here before Katrina, but now.

I live on the opposite end, Spring. I cannot tell for sure how things are here, because I am always at home now and have been for months. On the rare occasions I venture out though, things seem "normal." Went downtown a month or so ago (which is where I normally work). Obviously a lot of workers who normally would be there aren't at the moment. But it otherwise seemed normal.

272 A lot of the stuff that makes the urban environment intolerable happens at just-below-newsworthy level, so you never hear about it.

Examples I've heard about recently repeatedly in the SF Bay Area:

-- Minority bus drivers not stopping for and/or refusing to pick up Asian and white passengers. If there's a black bus driver, and a black person is waiting at a stop, then the driver will pull over and let the passenger on. But if it's an Asian or white passenger waiting alone at the stop? Whoosh - -drive right on by, don't even slow down. if there's a mixed crowd, the driver has to stop and reluctantly allow non-blacks on amongst the crowd.

-- Bum-on-bum violence has become racialized. Used to be the violence in the "homeless encampments" was generally due to drug disputes and/or mental illness issues erupting randomly. But I've heard more and more tales of bum-fights and bum-violence being due to racial disputes -- something that was rare to non-existent before. Also, random minority bums now much more frequently yell menacing racialized schizo threats at passing white people -- "Bubbedy you motherfuckin' WHITE devil I kick ass watch your back wallagabonza!" and you walk past some crazed wino in the gutter.

-- Shoplifting be black teens has become a constant, nearly universal experience for most shop owners. The teens know they are untouchable -- accuse them of anything, and they'll call you a racist, film the incident and upload it, and within 45 minutes there will be BLM protesters in front of your store. So the teens just laugh and take whatever they want, and the shop owners just let them walk out with it, rather than risk the political fallout from stopping them or calling the cops.

Etc. etc. etc. Little things. Day after day, and constant stream of infuriating, alarming or enraging micro-incidents that NEVER get reported on. After a while, they all add up to make the whole urban environment intolerable.

++++++++++
Yes. For a few weeks, moved in to Cabrini Green to demonstrate how "not bad" it was. She had a security detail with her and she only lasted a short while. They also had to harden her apartment, and did so cheaply and effectively. When she moved out and the gangsters took a look around and the modifications, the light bulbs over their heads turned on and then the cops got to deal with armored apartment entrances on the rare occasion that they could be talked into going into those vertical no-go-zones.

The gigantic high-rise urban housing projects were an unmitigated disaster. Only Saint Louis came to terms with that on its own, when they lobbied hard to be allowed to tear down Pruitt-Igoe. Chicago held on to the bitter end, and only finished tearing down Cabrini Green and its sisters when HUD made them do it and footed the bill.

314 Why would even leftwing mayors wish to destroy their cities and drive out the tax base they need?

So they can surrender their cities to the Minorities that Democrats favor while, at the same time, taxing everyone who works in the city, and making many of the suburban Metropolitan areas basically finance said New Minority City. Case in point: Detroit. The Minorities destroyed the city, which then had to rely on the suburbs for a lot of their finances. The Minorities keep voting D, and can do whatever they want, while the state and region pay for their bills. And the residents of the city keep voting D.

Not sure. Probably. The LEft has gone to great lengths in recent years to fuse black and brown into one overarching unified grievance-group - -but on the other hand, the hostility between Hispanics and black in many California cities goes way back for decades, and that's hard to undo.

Getting hassled is one thing. Big cities, you expect some of this type of behavior. Having the law look at you, look at the disorder, and shrug, that was the moment I said I'd never go back. I wasn't hurt or robbed. But I had a feeling of, you're on your own here. I never forgot that, and I vowed I won't live anywhere that I feel I am on my own.

University suggests it may punish students for failing to intervene in 'bias-motivated' incidents

Syracuse University may soon punish students who fail to intervene in what the university dubs "bias-motivated" incidents, a recent dispatch from the school's "chief diversity and inclusion officer" suggests.

The university's student code of conduct "has been revised, based on [student] input, to state that violations of the code that are bias-motivated--including conduct motivated by racism--will be punished more severely," writes Keith Alford on the school's website.

The New York-based school "also revised the code to make clear when bystanders and accomplices can be held accountable," Alford continues, implying that the university may soon begin punishing students who don't sufficiently confront such incidents when witnessed.

We talk in shorthand. I feel bad about the cities just like, if I had been around at the time, I would have felt bad for Dresden and Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There were good people who live in all of those cities, that has never been disputed, and it was a tragedy that they had to be destroyed.

but they DID have to be destroyed, because they supported a system dedicated to OUR destruction, and there was no other way for any kind of worthwhile future to be reached.

In the current situation, we are actually marvelously fortunate that we don't have to weigh the moral calculus of destroying these dens of evil and hatred; we have the luxury of sitting back and watching them destroy ourselves. It's probably not nice to express our elation at watching our sworn enemies destroy themselves, but it's an understandable response.

I used to think nothing about driving over to Portland. I dont' go over there any more. The only reason I would go is for one doctor and I don't need to see him often. 466 I live in LA

Some Comments:

This urban violence is a thousand times worse than anything in the 70's and it's not close.

Me and my neighbors have brought first donuts and OJ to a Hollywood Division morning roll call and then pizza and soft drinks to an evening one.

What we heard there is that the police are being told not to interfere with the homeless at all unless violence is occurring. They feared that soon anything but violent crime will not be responded to.

The Homeless issue is embolding the homeless into greater and greater lawlessness, particularly in the more active, fashionable commercial districts.

Since LA is not really a functioning democracy where the City Council and the Mayor are owned by the Public Employee Unions, the entire city council wants to defund the police, including my formerly more conservative councilman.

All that said, things are not that bad at the moment. I have friends who have moved from Downtown which is a mess, to the Hollywood Hills where they really isn't threatening behavior. Believe it or not the Hollywood Hills is, except the western edge of the Valley, one of the most conservative areas of the city that is why so many of my neighbors went to support the police.

I also have friends who are moving from Minneapolis to So Cal (Orange County) because things are so bad there, where the nicer areas of the city are at risk. They have been there for almost thirty years and still have no conservative friends there. I have many in my neighbor hood alone.

I think there a lot of people (pun intended) who consider themselves believers, who don't really believe in the Old Testament (or as the Jews call it, the Bible) stuff.

They love the idea of lovey dovey fluffy bunny Jesus, and they don't quite believe the OT God is really capable of smiting whole cities, or flooding the world. The notion of wiping it clean doesn't really fit into their belief system.

And yet...

And if you think getting punched in restaurants (which I've seen a lot of video of in Baltimore near Camden Yards) is bad, wait until you idiots who still live in urban areas try to vote in November. some race base face punching will be going on.

Pretty sad...Or we could recognize this, declare an insurrection and arrest and deport millions of people.

Posted by: guest myspace user at August 13, 2020 04:05 PM (rnk6i)

494 Because I find the attitude "I don't give a flying eff about cities" as if they die and this has absolutely no connection to the rest of the state both naive and also disturbing.
Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 13, 2020 03:48 PM (WkPC9)

The city will die as an entity, like Detroit, the people will leave for the most part.

And what is the alternative to urban decay 2.0. massive infusion of tax dollars from the rest of the state? Federal tax dollars and the NG? Will that prop up the looters or provide assistance to the vulnerable? Not if the the likes of DiBlasio can help it.

The alternative of having them move to the suburbs is also unpleasant, but it will take them a while to overthrow a pro police mentality. And there are no high rise mass developments near me, how about you?

Nobody wants the urban looters living next door, but you can't blame the more normal people from leaving and taking their taxable income with them.

At the end of the day, NYC, Seattle, Chicago voted for this. They just didn't believe it would happen. They were wrong. They can vote to re-fund the police or get off their asses and leave behnd their stupid marxism. But, yes, many of them asked for this. As BlondeMorticia pointed out, Omar won her primary. They are STILL voting for this. Let them reap what they've sown. Some people won't learn until the economic pain is very personal.

As for China, they need the US. They can take Taiwan, but at a staggering cost. Which includes South Korea and Japan arming up with nukes. Honestly, if Trump hasn't spent the last four years quietly permitting Taiwan's development of a bomb then I can't imagine why.
Posted by: trev006 at August 13, 2020 03:46 PM (D3I/G)

Yes to your first. They definitely need us more than we need them.

As to Taiwan... The ChiComs would LOVE to slaughter every one of them, for being impertinent enough not to die screaming back in '49. But they couldn't take Taiwan even if they tried. They don't have the amphibious capability or the naval experience to be able to duke it out with a modern military like Taiwan. The odds are worse if the US backs them up.

The only real military advantage that China has over anyone is an enormous pool of military-age male manpower. Yet on the modern battlefield, that doesn't matter as much as it did 50 years ago, because you actually have to be able to arm them, and that is hideously expensive. Not to mention that modern weapons are huge force multipliers.

509 The ChiComs would LOVE to slaughter every one of them, for being impertinent enough not to die screaming back in '49. But they couldn't take Taiwan even if they tried.

Oh, they COULD, its not like they really care about the cost in human life or suffering, they could just use the Rommel method of taking Tobruk: keep throwing men at it until you finally wear them down. Not a great general, that guy. Just great intel.

But it would cost them far more than men, the entire world would turn against them and destroy their economy as well as a good 20 million men from their military age.

I was talking to my (somewhat elderly) mother about that, since she's worried as well, and I opined that what I have come to believe is that there is going to be a great bifurcation; some places, which we've been talking about in this thread, are going to do terribly, and be much much worse than the Great Depression; but other places will in fact boom, as wealth and money from the collapsed areas pours into them.

We are not a unified country anymore, one result of that is that we are not going to have a unified outcome. It's all going to depend on where you are.

The city has sporadic riots, (as recently as night before last, in solidarity with Chicago looters); they have destroyed much of the historical atmosphere by removing all the statues on Monument Avenue; and the remaining statue of General Lee has been defiled and the grounds destroyed. Just like in the olden times, we pull the most aggregious jackass out of their cushy ivory tower, and hang them in the view of everyone, for causing the most death and suffering.

Laws? Laws, you say?

Ha!

We gave up on laws, when we chose to act like lemmings and willingly destroy our livelihoods and futures because Blue State governors use the shutdown as a political tool instead of a pandemic.
This is against a virus that is less dangerous than many Chinese viruses before it, and other viruses such as Polio.

Yet, our country is being destroyed. Many of our great cities look like bombed out hulks in some neighborhoods. And the government that shut us down from living our lives in peace, refuses to stop the destruction at all.

Other morons here have made tremendous comments about what is really happening, as has Ace with the article.

Wrap your head around this: War is coming. Because every other civilized option has been taken off the table by the powers that be, war, like a massive forest fire, will destroy it all, and like a forest fire, start everything over again.

But what you have now, a civilized society, even with all of it's shortcomings and faults, will be gone.

Public employee unions should be illegal.

The reason is simple - the most interested party, the taxpayer, is never represented at contract negotiations.

Also, that a union of public employees, paid from public funds, can then skim those payrolls to donate to political campaigns to influence public policy? Abominable.

557 I think the big difference, and I grew up in the 70s, is that before they went 100% into coke and heroine distribution the mob, or people who defended their neighborhoods, wouldn't allow this. A business owner pointed out a long term homeless taking advantage of the lax policing and lamenting the revolver nature of this, while said homeless was masturbating in public. When and where I grew up, the gentleman would have been escorted off the premises, double tapped and disposed of, regardless of race. Since that's not an option anymore, and the cops wont/aren't allowed to at least arrest them I believe some time soon well see the 2020s version of this. Shame. We made an implicit agreement with the authorities about security and they haven't lived up.to it.

So we stand back and let them destroy our greatest cities? Did Londoners say "Sod the Nazis, I'm outta here," during the WW II Blitz? did the Russians abandon St. Petersburg? or the Poles refuse to ride into battle over Warsaw?
This throwing in the towel and walking away is completely understandable. I'm moving out of NYC myself, God willing, but I'm an old lady. But it's not the stuff of heroism. And if we don't have any plans to retake the ground we've lost -- don't kid yourself, they'll be coming for small to middle-sized cities and suburbs next.

Who's this 'we', kemosabe? The people who live in the cities and the people who live in rural areas are different. The city dwellers are increasingly non-American.
