WarnerMedia Lays Off Over 800 Workers; DC Comics Hit With a "Bloodbath"
Most things not related to HBO Max are being "streamlined."On Monday, WarnerMedia began a round of layoffs, letting go hundreds of staffers amid the coronavirus crisis that has crippled Hollywood with shelved tentpoles and production shutdowns. Sources said the first wave of layoffs is expected to be around 600 staffers, with a heavy focus on Warner Bros. Stephens said that HBO Max will remain one of the key growth focus areas for the company....He says that he doesn't know when they'll be releasing films.
Addressing planned upcoming theatrical releases, he said, "I am not certain where those are going to go," suggesting possible "further delays in some of the titles" as the cinema reopening and theatrical release schedules have remained in flux.The merged company was already heavily in debt due to the cost of AT&T buying the huge Time Warner, and already was planning layoffs and the sales of entire divisions to reduce that huge debt load. WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar hasn't shied away from sharing his thoughts on Amazon's refusal to add HBO Max to its Fire devices. Addressing the importance of putting consumers first, Kilar explained to Bloomberg how, with a society that is so technologically driven, "what tends to happen is concentration of successful companies unlike anything history has seen. We have fewer companies but larger companies." Kilar argued how some companies, however, conflate their interests with statements pertaining to consumer focus. Kilar noted how this leads to a lot of decision-making that favors the company, not the consumer. When pressed for an example, he pointed directly at Amazon, saying, "If Amazon were truly focused just on the consumers with Fire devices, HBO Max would be on Fire devices. The consumer wants it." He then joked how people should "call the Seattle folks" for answers as to why HBO Max is currently unavailable on Amazon Fire devices.It's a "bloodbath" at the WarnerMedia-owned DC Comics, with the Editor in Chief, the Publisher, and one third of the editorial staff sacked. Included in the sackings is -- this is a rumor as of yet, not confirmed -- leftwing SJW ideologue Andy Khouri, one of the absolute cancers killing the industry, who brought in GamerGate skel Zoe Quinn to "write" "comics" for DC, despite her having no comic book experience and no writing experience (outside Depression Quest and a failed kickstarter). That's now standard SJW artistic practice -- men like boobs so women must not be drawn with them, to defeat the "male gaze." Even if the woman is very fat and could be expected to have big boobs. But the artist herself usually draws curvy women who do have breasts. #Cancelling Wonder Woman's breasts seems to have been a Special Customer Request by either Rooster Teeth or DC Comics. Here is a google search for the artist's (Robin Eisenberg's) work -- but content warning. A lot of it involves fairly graphic lesbian sex and dildoes and masturbation. And (alien) lesbian orgies. All sorts of content warning there. I'm not a prude, and lord knows I don't mind some lesbian sex, but... what is this artist doing on a book aimed largely at teenaged (or younger) girls? Male artist Frank Cho was forced to quit illustrating Wonder Woman because his PC drip SJW writer objected to any sex appeal in Wonder Woman at all.
"EVERYONE loves my Wonder Woman covers and wants me to stay. Greg Rucka [the SJW writer\ is the ONLY one who has any problem with covers. Greg Rucka has been trying to alter and censor my artwork since day one," Cho told the site. HBO Max has a shit ton of content through Warner.
They have yet to figure out how to package and present it in their UI.
Netflix and Amazon have excellent accessibility to their good and crap content though the UI and search features, and also their recommendations and related content are mature, and perhaps more importantly, EXIST.
There is a way to get into the HBOMax catalog directly, but it is not intuitive, and once you are there, it is like staring into a firehose to figure out what you want to watch.

CalArts style aka thin-line animation is the absolutely awful style used for nearly all animation the last few years.
It's ugly as hell and takes little, if any, talent to draw. It's aggressively attacking the notion of putting care and attention into animated work.
Needless to say, the SJWs love it and consider anyone noting that it is ugly to be GamerGate alt right trolls.

You may recall us discussing some months back about how Print Comics were dead. You could say it's due to Covid, but really, all that die was to accelerate a process already in place. How many comic book stores will re-open, with the industry like this? Very few, and as sales revenue from print continues to plummet, supply will fall off even more, more and more retail stores will close - it's the classic death spiral, with no way to pull out of it.
To me, firing the Editor in Chief and the Publisher of the print comics is the Big Red Flag that they know that part of the biz is being closed down.

That's been my reaction to every streaming service I've seen. I watch TV occasionally, usually when I'm feeling so bad I can't do anything but lie on the couch or bed, so it gives me something to pass the time. I wouldn't pay for any streaming service, no matter what it contained.

I grew up with the Silver Age Superman family of comics from 1961-1964: Superman, Batman, Jimmy Olsen, Action Comics, World's Finest, etc. Vivid storytelling and imagination, a love for the classic mystery and its solution, good artwork (Christopher Reeve was said to have modeled his flying scenes on DC artist Curt Swan's rendition of Superman).
Then I outgrew comics until a friend of mine pressed the Chris Claremont-era X-Men on me -- right about the time of the Phoenix Saga. I was astonished at the storytelling, the vivid imagination, and the more-believable dialog and characterizations. (A secret: I have the special edition of the Phoenix Saga on my bookshelf. Don't tell anybody.)
The super-grim iterations of Batman and other comic titles haven't interested me in years, though. Maybe I was missing something until the SJWs ruined the field.

They are going to have to do what they do with network TV and theaters. You are either a distributor or a content provider. You can't be both. The networks are limited in the number of shows they own they can show. And studios can't own theaters. I would prefer they make it where you have to provide your content to streaming services at a fixed cost for everyone. If you don't, you lose your copyright.

They bought Direct TV, and then converted that to stream as DirecTVNow and then rebranded that as ATT TV which is too many T's in a row. Its a dumb name.
So they bought Warner and they are stuffing the Warner catalog down the HBOMax pipe. Killing off HBO Go in the process.
So the big streamers are Netflix, Amazon, Disney, Apple, and I am going to put HBOMax in there. These are all pretty much "non-channel" streamers, meaning they are not repurposed cable TV, they are straight on-demand content.
I don't know that the world is big enough for that, as there is a significant amount of shared content between them, and the argument for demand for subscription to a particular service for a particular property isn't pencilling out necessarily. Perhaps best with Disney.
But then you get into the platform wars, too.
And add to it that new content isn't coming for a while.
There will be more layoffs.

Desperation in marketing, not a good sign given Warner's superhero history. Reminds me of BatmanVSadSuperman. If they had high confidence in the movie, they'd stick with showcasing Gal Gadot, who would be sexy reading the phone book aloud.

Going off memory of that old discussion, the original problem was that almost all of the comic retail stores in strip malls across the country closed, at least temporarily, due to Covid restrictions. In response, because there was no market with no stores, DC and Marvel laid off a large number of their writers and artists, because with no sales they did not need any product. Now, some stores are re-opening but there is still very little new product, because sales are still too low to pay for bringing them back. With no new product, those stores are mostly going to be closing back down again.
And now, with the response were seeing from DC comics as detailed above, we can tell that nothing is going to break that death spiral; in fact it's going to accelerate.
Print comics are dead. They're going to attempt to replace them with some online only abomination, but that's not going to work, because it will never generate enough money to get anyone with talent to make it work. DC and Marvel have both now entered their "Milk the Cow till she drops Dead from Exhaustion" stage.

That's somewhat true, but not entirely. There's still a few programs out there that are smart and are hilariously funny for adults too. The Amazing World of Gumball is one that comes to mind. Lots of "wink wink nudge nudge" humor in there that makes no sense to the kids but will to the parents, kind of like the golden age of Looney Tunes. One of my favorite episodes is "The Console", where the characters live out a RPG in their town (specifically FF VII). Ridiculously entertaining for a Gen Xer.

Yeah when I started reading comics, they were 60 cents each. I could afford that once in a while. And I could read ones off the rack that I didn't buy, even if it wasn't as good as having it to read at home.
Their astronomical prices and gimmicks (lenticular covers! Multiple covers! Collectable issues! 3d!) and focus on late teens and early 20s boys ruined a lot of titles and drove away a lot of potential buyers.

Saw a meme video the other night, and in it was a clip of third-worlders in wife-beaters in what looked to be an abandoned warehouse, making COVID masks. One at a sewing machine, feeding a giant pile of masks on the floor, and three men literally using a concrete floor to fold the accordion folds with their dirty hands.

I even subscribed to Heavy Metal for a while - I loved that one! A lot of Euro-French fantasy art in it, especially Moebius, who did a lot of the design work for 5th Element.

But what is the modern audience for comic books? They used to be sold at easy to access places like 7-11, I'm guessing now it's only comic book shops and online, I doubt kids really frequent places like that anymore. No matter what your politics, is any audience really into this woke garbage?
It's amazing what can be pirated online, you can have pretty much any classic comic book you want on your tablet, with websites making it very easy to browse. Like Napster but it seems comic companies dont have the resources to fight it. That has to be devastating to the bottom line.

Not really, old comics aren't a commodity for comic companies like music is for musicians or record companies. They don't have any kind of archive business and nobody rolls out old comics to read on the radio or TV. Once they are out, they're pretty much dead and disposable.
The only way comic book companies make money on old comics is compiled into books which are worth getting just to have the story in one book.

Last I heard, DC is using "Wonder Woman 1984" to make a Wonder Woman "Flashpoint" to reboot the DC Universe.
With all the other stuff going on in the movie, there may be too much plot, which usually is a movie killer.

The physique of comic book men over the years is like an arms race. Every time some new super strong guy came out, he was bigger, until the Hulk is so big his pecs are the size of a normal person. And the old strong guys had to be more ripped and bigger to compensate: Superman from 1940 was small for a martial arts character in comics today. Batman went from a gymnast-type of build to a gigantic jacked monster.

Not really, old comics aren't a commodity for comic companies like music is for musicians or record companies. They don't have any kind of archive business and nobody rolls out old comics to read on the radio or TV. Once they are out, they're pretty much dead and disposable.
The only way comic book companies make money on old comics is compiled into books which are worth getting just to have the story in one book.

I should have been more specific and said both classic and stuff not that old, like a few months. So anyone that wants this can find about a dozen sites that catalog it very nice and neat and you can download as a .cbr file.
Considering a lot of this is sold online anyway, I'm thinking it's a pretty easy step for people to just pirate it. Look at some of these sites like newcomic.info
It's just a free for all and I don't feel bad for these companies in the least.

I've only been using one of my gaiter since day 1 of this crap. If I can wear one fishing for 4 hours in the blazing sun I can wear one for a few minutes while I run into the store.

We watched Tom Hank's war movie, Greyhound this weekend. I think it is on apple tv, not netflix, but dunno.
It was a bit thin. Hanks did not do a great job imo. Just a lot of cheap camera shots of his face as if they would do it.
The war action was decent though. And some historical references.
My PC/SJW antenna was not raised. It's an action flick. Very simple plot. And not an overly long movie for a change.

I got to meet Julie Schwartz once, back when I worked at a comic book shop. Nice guy!
I saw that he was coming in for a book-signing, and I would be working that night, so I brought in something a little out of the ordinary for him to sign. He was best known for editing Superman in the 50s and 60s, but I just happened to have an Ambush Bug comic in which Schwartz appeared as a character. Ambush Bug was a comic made for industry insiders, full of weird in-jokes, and Schwartz was kind of portrayed as an asshole. And instead of the artist drawing him, they superimposed the same grainy photo of Schwartz onto a crudely-drawn body in every panel where he appeared.
I handed that comic to Schwartz, and he just busted up laughing. He turned to Gil Kane (another comics legend), and said, "Hey, Gil! Look at this!" Kane wasn't feeling very good that night, and he just kind of waved a hand and muttered something like, "Yeah, yeah, that's awesome."
Schwartz, undeterred, was still laughing as he signed my comic and I went on my way to return to work.
The next day, the guy who was in charge of keeping the guests happy and making sure they made their flights back home walked up to me and said, "Hey, Warbler... Julie Schwartz was tickled pink by that Ambush Bug comic. You really made his night!"
I was happy to hear that.

I'm left with the Batman: White Knight. Great plot, Batman is the bad guy thanks to the media. And it's illustration is top notch IMO.

Decades ago, I was not pleased with the movie selection on HBO. Then HBO made a pro-abortion prop film called something like "If These Walls Had Eyes" starring Cher.
I immediately cancelled HBO and let them know why.
