Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: Post Hurricane Madness Edition! [Weasel]Random Sig from the WeaselCollection Some assembly required... Simply cleaning a weapon requires some level of disassembly and I was always curious about all the little pins and springs and other teensy parts that make up the innards of a gun. Frequently my re-assembly attempts ended with leftover parts on the bench, necessitating a frantic YouTube search until a helpful video help was found, or worse, taking the gun and a baggie of loose parts to my gunsmith. Two things eventually happened; my collection of Sig Sauer semi-automatic pistols grew large enough, and I got tired of paying for simple adjustments, repairs and parts replacement. It was at this point that I decided to take Sig's Armorer's Course so I packed a bag, pointed the car north, and headed for Epping, New Hampshire. The Sig Sauer Academy sits on 140 acres a little over an hour north of Boston, MA. The facilities include an assortment of indoor/outdoor ranges, classrooms, tactical training areas and a pro shop. It's a really impressive setup, and I'd been to the Epping facility before taking rifle courses so I was familiar with the layout. Signing up was simple and done online, including uploading various credentials required for the specific courses. The armorer's courses are conveniently held in locations all over the country, last two days, and cost $430. Upon successful completion, students are awarded a certificate good for three years which allows them to fully service the pistols while maintaining the factory warranty. Recertification is a one day refresher class for $260. The P226 in the picture above is the gun I took apart and put back together about 100 times over the course of two days. You start by working on the smaller sub-assemblies and eventually work up to complete disassembly and re-assembly of the pistol. I thought I'd be cute and organize the parts by group to make it easier, but I guess the instructor had seen this before and helpfully mixed everything up into a big pile for me. Eventually, it was fairly straightforward to take a pile of parts and turn it into a working firearm. The course is quite a bit of fun, but it's also no joke. You must demonstrate proficiency working on the weapons to the instructor and pass a written test. I've found the experience gained even helps in troubleshooting problems with other brands of firearms. I have to say I'm happy to have taken the course but I haven't felt compelled to keep the certification current. I'm also not sure I'd pay any more than the the $430 they're charging. The quality of instruction is very good but at that price I don't think it's a bargain for the casual shooter. Not a waste, but not a bargain. So that was my opinion last year, and it's sort of still my opinion this year. What changed? Well, I think my opinion of the relative value of the knowledge gained has increased. In these difficult and uncertain times which we're all living in together, I think the value of what I learned has gone up. Way up. Rather than before simply being a matter of mere convenience, I know I can work on these guns and repair them myself as necessary when it's not practical or possible for me to take them to someone else to fix. I think you need to have at least some familiarity with the operation and assembly of your firearm. Why am I mentioning this now? Well, for two reasons; first, it saves me from having to think of new things to write about, and more importantly, it identifies something you need to be thinking about in addition to buying ammo and practice. Your trusty carry handgun isn't going to do you much good if, say, a trigger spring breaks and you do not have the spare part and the ability to replace it. Yourself. If you followed the Sig Sauer course links above, you will have found there are currently no armorer's classes listed, I'm guessing due to the Chinese Cooties, and even the popular basic defensive handgun courses are full until sometime in October and November. Guess all the new handgun owners have decided to train up, but the armorer's courses are simply gone altogether. Who would have thought this would be the new reality even a mere six months ago, and what do you do now that it is? I would encourage you to start looking for general maintenance references and resources for your most frequently used firearms, and identify the most common parts subject to wear and order replacement parts now. I'm talking about springs, pins, grip screws and firing pins - that sort of thing. Anything that is subject to wear and tear through normal use. You need to have these spare parts now, and not try to source them when they break and are needed in a hurry. You should also have a basic maintenance kit with the tools needed for precision work. A small set of gunsmithing screwdrivers, needle nose pliers, punches, and a small brass hammer. I am sure you can think of other things to add. Clearly label the parts and get a small inexpensive fishing tackle box to keep it in. There are countless reference books on basic firearm repair and you can probably find one with an exploded parts diagram for your particular firearm. Keep this with your tools and you will thank yourself later. Here's a video example someone made of a Sig P226 reassembly, and there are a lot of others. It's difficult to see detail of some of the small parts, but you get the idea. Here's some information on the Henry rifle recall [h/t redc1c4 and JTB] ATTENTION NoVaMoMe 2020!!Sad people who cannot make the new NoVaMoMe date of August 29th AmmoSeek - online ammo search tool GunBot - online ammo search tool SG Ammo Palmetto State Armory Georgia Arms AmmoMan Target Sports USA Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Youngest Son is now out of the Marines, moving to NDak, and sooner or later will want to take that shotgun with him, so I'm going to have to find something exactly like it, if possible. Fortunately the Sig P226 is very easy to break down and take care of. My TacOps is my fave hand cannon. Fits my hand perfectly, fires smoothly, deals 20 rounds per mag...it is an amazing gun.
Recuperating still...but I used the time to throw all my gun related stuff into a closet, sans the guns I have scattered to various positions around the house for self-defense. I've been encouraged to take down any skunks I see outside (the nearest neighbor is a mile away) so I may have to do that if kept cooped up in the house much longer. Brother Weasel, I fully concur as to being able to work on one's own gun(s).
I actually *enjoy* taking a S&W revolver down to basic parts, cleaning out the various nooks n' crannies, and getting it all back together, oiled, greased and good to go. One reinforcement to your post though. Buy Gunsmithing screwdrivers. Brownell's is as good a source as any. It's either that or scar-up your gun's various screws and fasteners, and you don't want to do that. Add brass punches, drifts and a combination brass/nylon double sided tap-hammer. Do *not* add jeweler's files, Arkansas stones, emery cloth or God Forbid, any kind of Dremel tool into the mix. At least, not until your expertise actually approaches the meaning of the word "expertise". Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at August 09, 2020 07:16 PM (QzJWU) 40

Ola, ca ca?
Swamped for gun auctions at the moment, there are 3 major ones all in the next 6 weeks, after two years of nothing because of the shootings and the rona b.s. Lots of goodies to buy, just saw a nice BAR by Royal Typewriter Co on the list. So many goodies, so little cash. I am hamstrung for the next 6 months as I have just ordered a MAG58. On the actual shooting front I was breaking in the .338 with the new Vortex Razor scope and trying to sort out load development. Was getting an average of 2910 fps with the 250gn Bergers which should be good to 1600 mtrs from a 300 mtr zero point, so happy with that. A nice day for shooting but we have started lambing (effing early) and it's still midwinter . Hey there Weasel, howdy feller gun nuts...Let us gather together to celebrate the gun thread...
Still no range time for me. The heat is more than my old fat ass can take...This has got to end someday soon... right? I did manage to re seal my Smith and Wesson 79G air pistol.Actually, I re sealed it,and after 2 shots the valve seal failed. I tracked down a replacement on Evil Bay that fits and works great, but is not even close in appearance to the original. The gun shoots better than it ever did before, so I am pleased. I snuck a pellet trap out back and fired off a bunch of pellets. ( In the Nations Capital it is illegal to shoot an air gun outside...) I have had an air gun range in my shop for years, but since I closed up it is a bit more of a challenge. Shooting practice IS shooting practice, no?? Weasel, having the tools and information to do at least basic repairs and maintain your guns is important. I have detailed disassembly/assembly books or printouts for just about every gun I own. This includes how to repair/maintain bolts on rifles since the bolts are the most complicated part on those guns.
I have them in hard copy because I don't trust any assurance that the information will be available on the internet. Or if the power is down. Mrs. JTB insisted and I agreed. (Yes, I'm married to an angel.) I've never tried it but I have a DVD by Jerry Miculek on how to rehab and smooth the action on a S and W Model 10 revolver. I was always reluctant to try fearing I would screw up the job. Now I have enough 38 special and 357 revolvers that I can take the risk. Posted by: JTB at August 09, 2020 07:24 PM (7EjX1) 56

Never was a Sig-fanatic, though I did (do) covet a P210. Then I got a P365, with manual safety, as the j-frame smith wasn't quite up to handling the current unpleasantness (it is now riding backup).

55 Weasel, having the tools and information to do at least basic repairs and maintain your guns is important.
Posted by: JTB at August 09, 2020 07:24 PM (7EjX1) ------ Thanks JTB. With a little advance planning, the right tools and a few inexpensive parts you can get right back into action. 58 ... RJD,
32/20 ammo is still sold, including black powder cartridges, if any is in stock. Starline and Remington make brass for it but good luck finding some for now. If your Marlin was actually made in 1892,you might want to limit it t shooting black powder cartridges. I would learn to load my own. The 32/20 is a rimmed, straight wall case, easy to reload. The Red Terror in Spain lasted about 2 months before the battle lines began to solidify and within six months both sides were doing regular draft notices, expanding their forces, etc. Most of the post-apocalyptic stuff assumes a vacuum but something will fill that space. Very nice Weasel!
This week was H&R Garand vs. SVT-40 Burst Fire Boogaloo 2. Took both out to distance this week and the Garand shined. At 220, 440, 500 and 650 yards, she just flat out hit what I aimed her at. Offhand at 220 and 440 and kneeling, sitting and prone at that plus 500 and 650 yards she rang steel all day long. All I had to do was click the rear sight to 200, 400, 500 and 600 and let fly then work back down click, click, click and she was on. No hiccups, no jams, no misfires. The SVT-40, however, continued her 2 round burst fire ways. I cleaned the bolt before this round, so that was not the problem. Apparently, what is happening is the trigger bar works fine until I press the trigger all the way back in which the trigger bar will dip slightly allowing the hammer to miss catching the trigger sear resulting in auto fire, which then resets as it should after the 2 round burst is complete. I fired single rounds for much of the day and the SVT was accurate but no match for the Garand this day. I did have fun though loading 2 rounds at a time and letting fly with 2 round bursts at the end of the day and actually hitting with the first round each time at 440 yards. I ordered a still in the cosmoline trigger group from Apex Gun Parts so I can compare the two and see how and if they operate differently. Replacing the trigger spring may also work as this one may be weak, even though when I examine the trigger group out of the rifle it appears fine. Final score: H&R Garand 2, SVT-40 0. Range time this week - benchresting Hellcat and Ruger Mark IV with Sig Zero and Holosun optics. All great. Shot a box of 5.56 just to keep the dust off. Hot but not intolerable. Here's a great idea that I stole from product reviews somewhere regarding brass polishing. I have a cheap Franklin Armory Case Tumbler. Results were just acceptable. Added a funnel to the center all thread (pointy side up) with a nut to secure same. This addition remarkably turbocharges the motion of cases during operation. Second idea was to use a cap full of NuFinish car wax and quarter a used dryer static sheet. Now I'm getting beautifully shiny brass in just 2 hours. A couple of nice days at the range this week, got the last of my new scopes sighted in. I love them all. It's been so hot that my beach chair umbrella that I clamp to the bench has become my new favorite range accessory. There's a lot more ammo being purchased than being fired, sooner or later people have to run out of storage space. Much like the great toilet paper shortage. Good luck with the mowing Weasel, I could barley get my little tractor through mine this morning. Greetings all.

OK, we're past 100 and I'm OT.
When Trump spoke at the Whirlpool plant Friday he said, "So, I have a lot of enemies out there. This might be the last time you see me for a while." I wondered what he meant by that. Now I see that White House staff all turned out to see the President off when he left on Friday. This seems unusual. Gateway Pundit--I know, I know--takes these indicators, along with some other things, to say something huge is about to happen. He thinks it's something so huge that Trump needs to stay away from the White House for his own security. Part of the reason I shoot airguns is practice. I have thousands of pellets in 177, and 22 calibers. Fewer in 20 caliber.
It is not *exactly* the same as normal shooting, but the hold on target, trigger squeeze etc is a good substitute, and does not burn up scarce and expensive ammo. Muscle memory is important... My 2 cents anyway... Posted by: Jesse in DC at August 09, 2020 08:05 PM (ouR/N) 179

I want to give my thoughts on the gun safe breaking in. I have a safe that is probably even cheeper than the one he had. (Just a key to get in). And yes thinking about it it would be pretty easy to get an angle grinder and cut through it. Hitting it right where the lock is and easy in.
That said he did not mount it on studs like every safe owner manual says to or there would have been chunks of wood on the back. Any safe can be broken into given enough time and the right tools. I have mine in a 2 by 6 that is then drilled into the wall studs in 6 places. Sure you can take a saws all and cut it out, but it will take time and be noisy. The point of a safe is to slow them down, not make it easy to get your guns, or any stuff in the safe. Posted by: Picric at August 09, 2020 08:06 PM (2cbKf) 181

The last shoot party we did we shot over 600 rounds through it in less than an hour. And we let it cool down two or three times. Posted by: Mr. Scott (Formerly GWS) at August 09, 2020 07:46 PM (JUOKG) I am impressed, the keyboard warriors all same the Riesling is a POS, but people I know seem to think they are very underrated guns. Posted by: NZFrank with a M2 at August 09, 2020 07:52 PM --- It is a finicky SMG. We have found it is best to load the same type of ammo in each magazine and to not mix stuff from different manufacturers. If you do that it tends to jam. Plus the selector switch is not the best in the World. You can switch it to full auto and still be on semi. You really have to jam it forward to make it work full auto. Almost as good as my Madam President Newsweek. Posted by: Winston, dreg of society at August 09, 2020 08:23 PM (d9Irc) --- Yeah I had to watch it. I think the best moment is when the fighting dies down and this one scrawny Antifa dude in his ninja outfit is the only one on his side still standing. His hands are at his side, so he's being left alone. So what does this military genius do? He leans over and hits one of the burly men with a plastic water battle - not rigid plastic, either, just the crumpling kind that's half-empty. Was he expecting it to stun the guy out like in the movies? He is *immediately* put in a headlock and over the boy-child screams you can hear deep, masculine voices saying "SAY UNCLE!" I laughed. Range report: took spouse carbine training.
I have printed assembly instructions for every weapon, 3-ring binder in the cave. Every one has been stripped to the frame. Have correct tools for carbines, bolt guns, and semi-auto pistols and some spare parts for some guns - many springs, firing pings, extractors, grip screws, detent pins, roll pins, screw kits - that sort of thing. Presently reworking some precision ammo. New barrels made with my reamer have different load and sizing requirement that previous best. Pull and keep bullets and powder. Resize then neck-expand primed brass. Reuse the powder - 41.52 gr +- 0.02 grain. This is some work - working on three full fat 50 boxes. Posted by: Richard at August 09, 2020 08:35 PM (huaUe) 254

Antifa cannot exist outside the careful ecosystem of its blue strongholds.
Sorry that is not true. Antifa and BLM have both made attempts in a number of Red Communities - for example very small towns in North and South Dakota. They have been unable to stage riots in any of them because they have been met by armed citizens. Be aware that the left has trained shooters and militia. They are just holding them back for when the shooting starts in earnest. Don't discount Antifa/BLM, and the left wing militias, they are much better organized than we are, and they are very dangerous. The left has also been building arms stock piles. range report:
May include a camera phone photo as well as I was very, very happy with one of my CZ P-07 DAO groups. The gun shoots very well. But still has light strikes on most ammo, abut once or twice per magazines. So it's not in carry rotation. Need to fiddle with different mainsprings, once they arrive in the mail from CZ Custom. Did test my Turkish 'Cavalry' shotty. This used to fire both barrels at one trigger pull. It no longer does this. What it does do is put a nice, nice group of buckshot right in middle of the target at 10 yards. It's a 12 gauge so you know you're firing it. Otherwise did some target transition drills and double tap drills in .22 with the Kadet adapter on my stock CZ P-07. It was a very good day at the range. I also found my old AK magazines and my G-3 mags. I....may have too much stuff. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards at August 09, 2020 08:53 PM (d1uFV) *slaps Mark upside the head* PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER, MAN! Posted by: Insomniac - Ex Cineribus Resurgo at August 09, 2020 08:55 PM (NWiLs) 311

A.H. Lloyd, is the C-96 comfortable to shoot? I mean, the grip looks like a, uh...uh...a broomhandle. And my Luger didn't command a premium price point. My wife just had to take it off her 99-year-old mothers closet shelf. Posted by: Charles the Simple at August 09, 2020 08:54 PM (HuH1F) --- Very. Yesterday for shits and giggles I used it in our self-defense drill. It was soooo fun. The trick is having good grips. I started with really worn ones, and they were okay, but the replacements have this little thumb shelf that gives you great control. Plus, you feel like Han Solo dropping Stormtroopers.* And with the stock/holster attached, it is sublime (but tuck your thumb!). *Yes, I have a full-size M1930 and Solo's is based off a Bolo, but his wasn't firing live rounds. Having actually been in a war against Communists, I don't under estimate them - which you are doing. Under estimating your opponent will get you killed in a war. When you fight Communists you have to realize that you are dealing with religious fanatics; the state is their god, and they worship that god, and are willing to fight fiercely for their faith. The question I'm about to pose has been bugging me since the moment I decided not to kill myself last October.
Background: I threatened no one. I did not fire the shotgun, though it was loaded, with the safety off when the police recovered it. I was institutionalized for three weeks, but deemed not a danger to myself or my family, and released with no action taken by the police or the courts. I am under an order of protection, requiring me to stay away from my home of 30 years. As far as I'm aware, according to the attorney who negotiated the surrender, I have not been charged with any felonies accruing from this situation. The police dept. still has possession of the Benelli. I have maintained firearms through out my life, my boys have their own collection as well. Unfortunately, all the weaponry is at my now estranged wife's house, and I cannot access the residence. Given the times, and the fact that I live in a blue city environment, I would like to re-arm (as it were). My questions are: Am I precluded from owning firearms of any kind? Will I pass a background check in NYS? Do I have to disclose my previous "situation" if/when I apply? Finished working on the garage/workshop/woodshed early today so I get to peruse my favorite thread real time. Guess my ammo inventory is not as low as some I see here but still concerning. Limiting myself to about 50 rounds when I wander down the hill to the range. Trying to conserve the 9mm for when the new Ruger PC finally comes through. Been 15 days. Thanks for the excellent thread Weasel!

Like the guy in the video says "All you need is a
cordless grinder." Yeah, *ALL* you need is a portable power tool that costs hundreds of dollars. Dude, if the thief has a portable grinder worth hundreds of dollars, why is he be-ing your place, again? Maybe Weasel's place where he has LOTS of guns, yeah. The guy is also backing a pickup to the house to load up his haul. The dude breaking in to grab some computers and TVs is NOT bringing a grinder and a saws-all to your place IN CASE he finds a pistol safe. *smh* Posted by: GWB at August 09, 2020 09:15 PM --- Not sure how he would mask the gunshots necessary to take out the wife's dog unless he came highly equipped with power tools and a suppressed weapon. don't under estimate them - which you are doing. Under estimating your opponent will get you killed in a war. Ha! Thanks BtB! Hey - you going to be at the TXMoMe? Starting to think about a plan for the rifle clinic.
I certainly hope so, although there's always a chance that reality has other plans. I'm trying to work up a load for the Schultz & Larsen for the clinic but the 100+ temps have been a real disincentive to getting out to the range. Weasel, missed the thread.
Out on beautiful Pt Loma and down on the bay. But I've already started getting spare parts - but mostly because almost all my gubs are out of production - from M1s (both kinds, and duh) to the CZ-83 to even the damn 5" XD 9mm (though I think almost all parts are common with the service 4"). But thanks as always for the thread! Posted by: rhomboid at August 09, 2020 10:06 PM (OTzUX) 488

*smh* Posted by: GWB at August 09, 2020 09:15 PM (1XOEC) You can buy a cordless grinder for about 40 bucks at Harbor Freight. If a thief knows you aren't home, and knows you have a gun safe, bringing a cordless grinder (or even a corded one, $19) would not be a big stretch. Note that having that foreknowledge means we are talking a professional burglar who cases the joint, and makes plans. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 09, 2020 10:37 PM (tw9Yo) 499
